- West Mosul, Iraq - As Iraqi military recaptured the al-Nuri Mosque Thursday, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi claimed victory in the long fight against ISIS. Retaking the mosque was symbolically important - ISIS used the site to declare a so-called caliphate in 2014 - and Iraqi forces have fought a grueling battle to claw back lost territory in the three years since.
VICE News' Ben Anderson has been following the Iraqi Army’s painstaking fight against the terror group, as they trying to cut the route between two of ISIS’s last remaining positions in west Mosul: the al-Jamhuri Hospital, which gives ISIS snipers a huge military advantage, and the old city, where most of the remaining fighters are hiding among civilians as they take their brutal last stand.

The Iraqi government soldiers are more competent and professional than any other arab fighters I’ve seen, the gunner was in complete control of his weapon, he fired bursts instead of spraying blindly. The soldier who fired his M16 down the alley was using his sights and laying down accurate, steady, semi-auto fire. Amazing, I wish the Afghan forces were this good!

Yes, the US put SOME effort into improving the Iraqi army but all of that went to waste because of the Iraqi government that was created by the US. US did NOT invade Iraq to create a democratic thriving state, the us invited Iraq because they didn't like how Iraq was becoming powerful and they saw Iraq's expansion as Germany's expansion before WW2. The surprising part is that the 9th AD is supposed to be in tanks and armored vehicles. They soon learned that they could not bring their vehicles into areas like these so they adapted and became infantry!

I am from the city of Mosul. When I see these scenes and destruction, I feel sad and remember the places of the people and the spirit of the mature city before this fabricated war. Its monuments have been destroyed 90%, the city’s monuments, the city’s churches, the city’s mosques, the city’s heritage and museum, the city is now almost empty of infrastructure, the city has become today a village , Even the demographic change took place in this city. It was a diverse and harmonious city.. Praise be to God, in any case, God willing, the next one.

They do sometimes actually manage to save them, but other times, it is just catastrophic.
If one thing you can get out of the army with, is that you can't save all of the lives, you have to sacrifice sometimes
