Great video again. It is easier to get to the vacuum pump on the non-turbo 3.2 engine. Removing the battery and battery tray make it very easy to remove the pump and no need to loosen the bracket for the AC compressor.

G'day, so I did this yesterday on my '08 V70 T6. Too easy. Thanks heaps. I got the parts from Tasca Parts. Excellent price and service out of the states. IT is ridiculous that I can import genuine parts to Australia cheaper than I can get them at my local dealers. I replaced both my drivers side engine mounts as well since I was in there. Pretty easy but if it comes up, others might benefit from that video. Cheers

It was! Doing transmission oil over weekend, I actually took the opportunity with this job while the fill bolt was exposed to loosen it, prepping for new job (and of course using that video you made as well)

Thanks a lot for this video - today having no experience I have replaced seals on my 2008 non-turbo 3.2 vacuum pump in 2 hours. Also have to remove two A/C bolts. Only one difference - I have not take a risk to clean surfaces with sandpaper, brakecleaner was good enough.
Excellent and thorough video. I'm diagnosing a noise I heard on the coldest day last winter that returned yesterday. Initially I thought it was the water pump or idler pulley. Yesterday's symptoms seem to indicate the power steering pump is the problem - vibration, noise, small amount of fluid on driver's side lower cross member. I topped up the reservoir but will wait until I have obtained a replacement power steering pump. Your video confirms that I followed the proper sequence; stopping short of removing the battery. I already purchased a replacement water pump and serpentine belt, so I'll replace these at the same time. As far as I can see, removing the battery plate is the only access to these parts. @volvosweden, if I can't find a 2008-2012 xc70 t6; but can find a 3.2 with good service maintainance, is there any reason to avoid the non turbo ones? A friend of mine says they are slow.. but I'm not really looking for fast performance..more durability....any advice?
Very helpful instruction, thank you for sharing. I just got mine replaced today, which saved me about $250 on labor. On my 2012 Volvo S60 T6, the serviceability was improved - once the battery bracket being removed, the two screws on vacuum pump can be easily accessed and removed, it makes much easier to remove the pump than on XC70.
My 3.2 XC60 was at the Volvo dealership for a recall and they discovered that the vacuum pump was leaking and offered to fix it for $370. I found the OEM part on line for $76. I’ll be fixing that myself. Many, many thanks to you!!!! I’ve made a number of repairs myself to my fleet of Volvos because of your videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to make these extremely useful videos!!!!

Thanks for the response. I have been looking at the pump online and it appears to have openings that would allow oil to pass into the pump. Maybe the oil lubricates the rubber blade and is part of the design. The oil leak appears to come mostly from the engine to pump union. Just a guess on my end. Thanks for the great video.

Just did this today on my XC60 T6. The oil was quite thick and dark in mine, perhaps it's a good thing I cleaned it out. Disconnecting the Vacuum hose was a chore as the plastic was brittle and broke when I squeezed it to disconnect. Had to use to flat-head screwdrivers to pull the two sides apart. On a good note, I did not need to remove my battery box or loosen the bracket to access the front bolt.
I am thinking about buying a volve xc60 with this exact problem lol makes me either want to run or jump right in, but at least we got these damn good videos to contemplate and help make those decisions.. I bet this job would have cost 1100$ at the dealer
@@kingmaxx7986 No sound. I just noticed it is leaking. What sound does yours make. But I have to say, my Volvo can predict with 100% accuracy when it's going to rain. Whenever it's going to rain and you are driving, the air conditioning compressor makes a whining sound. No kidding.
You should only lubricate seals when you're twisting something on (like an oil filter). There's no need to do it on parts that are screwed on with bolts (it doesn't make a difference).
AFAIK, yes. And, you might want to put oil or lube back in the pump, too, before cranking and running the engine. Many of these seals swell to a larger size when exposed to oil and the pump needs the lubrication to prevent wear.
Thanks for posting this, my pump was leaking pretty bad. Followed this procedure for my s80 and the removal of the 13mm and 10mm for the bar to get at the pump is perfect. Got it all back together with new seals and no leaks. I noticed after getting the pump on that my belt is looking worn. Any videos ideas of how to remove the drive belt? Its really buried in there and not easy to get at the belt tensioner, may have to bring it in for the belt I think. Good video.

The most important thing is that 5 screws, they are the leaking main root cause. The screw is made by steel, and pump body is by aluminum, there will be small gap between both treads since long time, the sealing is mainly by thread to prevent oil from coming out. The cheapest way is just put tread tape to each old screws then the problem will be fixed. Anyway change the new screw is the best solution.

I have one question. None of the seals replaced addresses the pump getting full of oil. IE Shaft seals for the rotor. It looks like the engine is migrating the oil into the pump. Why does this happen?
Need to mate this pump with an electric motor and retrofit into P80's-P2's to provide vacuum for the PCV system, so it can be completely separated from the intake system entirely. No oil allowed in the intake, a catch can in the path that you can drain once a week/month.

has it got any return valve to stop engine oil from coming off to the brake booster in case the one in booster failed ,I have one here gave me aheadache to find out how come the oil in booster , the brake booster literally filled with oil , I would assume this happening during engine shutdown as that vacuum on booster will suck any oil in pump if it has not got valve at the outlet where vacuum hose connected to it , can you elaborate in this please
What is the symptoms of a leaking vacuum pump? My 2012 S80 t6 has a high pitch noise near the vacuum pump and ac pump area. It appears after the engine warms up and only at idle. It is gone right after I press gas paddle. So far no check engine light. Appreciate your comments!
I thought that the hose connected to the battery was to bleed off hydrogen gas produced when charging the battery. I don’t think I would want that gas anywhere near an ignition source, it is explosive. Remember the Hindenburg airship that exploded in NJ when docking. A slow bleed at the bottom of the case would do.
Not only that but the replacement O ring is a different design - indicating that the first design was faulty....and then they sell lots and lots of fix kits at $200 (Aus) and labour of another $200 to fit - handy eh? Bastards
I heard from a technician from Volvo dealer - it's quite common for those in-line six cylinder Volvo engines. I have replaced seals on both 2012 Volvo S60 T6 AWD and 2010 XC60 T6 AWD.
Should I oil inside the pump after rebuilt? If not, the parts will not have friction? I have rebuilt mine, and cleaned the inside (no oil).. Just wanted to re confirm before I put back and start the car..
Poop - so I did this and in getting the 'plug' out of the pump, one of the plastic sprung lugs was as stiff as - applying force and ignorance resulted in breaking the alloy 'bar' on the outside of the hole holding the plastic clip in. Jury rigged with araldite and a jubilee clip - any ideas a. what happens if this plug comes out (loss of vacuum to brakes?) or b. longer term fix - was doing this myself to save money and certainly can't afford a new pump right now :-(

Hi my dealer wants me to change a check valve around a vaccum pump. My engine makes the noise of loose hydraulic lifters but it's not the lifters... Do you know what he is talking about? thanks for your videos, I wish my mechanic was as a good teacher as you are!
In jest, I can see the Swedes concerned about the environmental possibilities, yet possibly the Chinese (Geely) are less concerned? In Sweden old Volvos are to be stored on concrete pads, forcing many recycling yards to send them to the smelters.
The battery vent hose is shown in the vid...it transports hydrogen fumes out of battery box. The corrosion could be from from salt intrusion (car has Sweden plates).
Did you feel any difference in terms of power after the repair of the pump? I'm asking because I have to change the same part AND my car has a loss of peak power (minus 2 seconds at 0-60 mph after 6 years on the road). I did a Terra Clean but it hasn't improved its performance...
We have the same issue. Can this cause a false fuel pressure sensor code. Our codes are fuel pressure sensor and faulty vacuum pump. Thank you and great video as well
Thank you for the reply. We did find that a faulty fuel pressure sensor can be caused by a bad vacuum pump. This was per dealer. Our issue and codes went away after the fix

The bolts of the pump to the engine have to be tightend to 17Nm according to Vida.
The bolts on the pump housing have to be tightend to 7 Nm.
Where did you get the VIDA? My apologies I'm newer.

+Michel Pelletier Visual inspection only. No other symptoms.. If not fixed it will leak into the ground.
This is the first one to check when you notice a decrease on your oil dipstick level.

What is the symptoms of a leaking vacuum pump? My 2012 S80 t6 has a high pitch noise near the vacuum pump and ac pump area. It appears after the engine warms up and only at idle. It is gone right after I press gas paddle. So far no check engine light. Appreciate your comments!

Exact same pump type as VAG and BMW use.
You forgot to put oil in with the pump rotor.

I thought that the hose connected to the battery was to bleed off hydrogen gas produced when charging the battery.
I don’t think I would want that gas anywhere near an ignition source, it is explosive. Remember the Hindenburg airship
that exploded in NJ when docking. A slow bleed at the bottom of the case would do.
It's also fascinating that this leak seems to occur just after the warranty expires. Odd that.
Not only that but the replacement O ring is a different design - indicating that the first design was faulty....and then they sell lots and lots of fix kits at $200 (Aus) and labour of another $200 to fit - handy eh? Bastards

I heard from a technician from Volvo dealer - it's quite common for those in-line six cylinder Volvo engines. I have replaced seals on both 2012 Volvo S60 T6 AWD and 2010 XC60 T6 AWD.

Should I oil inside the pump after rebuilt? If not, the parts will not have friction? I have rebuilt mine, and cleaned the inside (no oil).. Just wanted to re confirm before I put back and start the car..
I'm running a 3.2 V70 and have an air leak hiss on the braking as soon as I push the pedal it disappears I can't tell where its coming from

Poop - so I did this and in getting the 'plug' out of the pump, one of the plastic sprung lugs was as stiff as - applying force and ignorance resulted in breaking the alloy 'bar' on the outside of the hole holding the plastic clip in. Jury rigged with araldite and a jubilee clip - any ideas a. what happens if this plug comes out (loss of vacuum to brakes?) or b. longer term fix - was doing this myself to save money and certainly can't afford a new pump right now :-(

+Darrin Ray Better to get after 2011. Transmission are ok. Need to change oil every 40K miles. T6 is the way to go.

that's a big design flaw by Volvo letting the battery fumes leak around the whole battery holder and cover
In jest, I can see the Swedes concerned about the environmental possibilities, yet possibly the Chinese (Geely) are less concerned? In Sweden old Volvos are to be stored on concrete pads, forcing many recycling yards to send them to the smelters.
The battery vent hose is shown in the vid...it transports hydrogen fumes out of battery box. The corrosion could be from from salt intrusion (car has Sweden plates).

Did you feel any difference in terms of power after the repair of the pump? I'm asking because I have to change the same part AND my car has a loss of peak power (minus 2 seconds at 0-60 mph after 6 years on the road). I did a Terra Clean but it hasn't improved its performance...
We have the same issue. Can this cause a false fuel pressure sensor code. Our codes are fuel pressure sensor and faulty vacuum pump. Thank you and great video as well

Thank you for the reply. We did find that a faulty fuel pressure sensor can be caused by a bad vacuum pump. This was per dealer. Our issue and codes went away after the fix

If seals leak does it make a weird sound after cold start? Like a hissing sound? It goed away when idle drops so like 10 seconda maybe?
