Yes the interlocking guitars are so excellent, and a hallmark of their work since way back. Ed told me that Greg sometimes joins them in playing guitar on their recordings. The time will come when they get the recognition they deserve, right? In the meantime don't miss them live. I followed their tour around the country before COVID, every gig was great and always different in some way. I think the band should be considered for a MacArthur award, or something similar and major.

I feel like I was so late to falling for this band. Mountain Moves was the record that really sucked me in, although I knew a handful of their songs before getting deep into that record. I'm kicking myself for how many chances I've had and missed to go see this absolutely amazing band before, but I will never miss them when they come through town again. The pure joy that shows from them after playing together for nearly 30 years is so contagious, and the fact that they're still writing absolute earth-shattering jams 30 years into a career is a testament to their musical power. (Also, fell in love with Chris Cohen's solo work in the past few years and it blew my mind to see that he was Deerhoof's guitarist for such a long time!) I can't say enough nice things about this band. So cool to have such a great sounding document of a band that is still firmly in their prime.
I got into them last year. Bit of a daunting back catalogue, but my 2 favourites are Friend Opportunity and Break-up Song. Not listened to the new album yet, but on the strength of this video it's going to rock.
I think they opened a portal to another dimension during the guitar parts on plant thief. But deerhoof could fight off any monsters that might come through the portal with their music.
for the uninitiated this band has been great forever. bowie was a fan of this band. greg wrote a post somewhere about meeting him and he knew the names of all the band members.
That makes sense. Bowie had impeccable taste in bands, and a lot of my fave bands were bands I discovered from reading Bowie interviews. Deerhoof is one of them, but also Arcade Fire, TV On the Radio, the Secret Machines, and more. The music world is a poorer place not only without his artistry, but also without his band recommendations.
Magicians all, I'm convinced. Taking sound and sanity itself apart in real-time and still sticking the landing, every time. It's like they're operating a train that always changes its mind, jumps the tracks and still gets exactly fucking where it wants to go by sheer, raw will alone. And gets there early. 🙃
Hell yeah, I think people usually crack open well on Harvey Milk “life the best game in town” and Neurosis “given to the rising” is a fairly good transition into them.
Joy! Not seen them play for about 5 years now, but this caused great memories to flood my mind. Always looked forward to hearing Greg's mid-set thoughts whenever I saw them - he never misses. Lovely people.
I love it. You guys are the absolute best and I’m glad there’s another 19 albums yet. I love meeting you guys the couple times I did. You’re my favourite band. I can’t believe it’s been over twenty years I’ve been jammin you guys.
I love deerhoof, I totally forgot their band name for years and could not remember any song titles haha Then this popped up in my feed! I am so grateful!
Kudos to the sound engineer(s). This mix is rt on. All of it is, and her bass is represented perfectly. They are as nice a group of people as a band could be. It’s so very cool to see such skilled musicians use their skills to serve the song and not to wank.
What I hear most is you all listening, receiving, hearing--how open you are to just expressing what's out there in the air, with nothing assumed or preconceived, so pure and unattached to any fixed mooring, following only inspiration. Sometimes it feels like the top of a wave and you're up on it so long I'm expecting it to break.
When Deerhoof were in their early days, they kinda got shuffled into the punk scene by default. There just wasn't enough music like them around, and they were weird and kinda heavy. It worked at the time, I guess. I'm glad to see them still going, and hope ppl realize how much of an inspiration they have been to artists for the last 30 years.
They give me the impression of a bunch kids who found some instruments in a garage somewhere without ever having played before and this is what pours out of them. Genius!
Did they??? Bold haha! I totally get it. They know what they are doing. There is a vision. Looseness (in a manner of speaking) and jarring antagonism ironically seem highly rehearsed - upon close inspection. To strive for that and do it as well as this performance is next to impossible for any other band.
