I don't think love or being the good guy protects people from criminals. And to be fair he's not the only famous person that goes out in public without protection. It's how they go out in public. He's not going to dive bars, or down dark alleys in the middle of the night, he probably sticks to mostly day time travel and public places that have some sort of security even if it's just cameras. His one unique skill compared to other famous people is he always seems wiling to take photos with fans or sign autographs, when many famous people hire security just to keep even a kind request for an autograph away.
I think the personal tragedies he’s had to endure has grounded him in the realities of what is most important in life. He doesn’t live in a fantasyland of his own making. He knows life for the harsher reality it is.
