    Pavelic, Norris, then probably Strom Thurmond because I have a fun(?) idea for the narration style. Have a great day :)

      Hey dutchie here. Ruiter name. Its meaning is rider. At least in modern dutch. However i do understand the confusion as ruiters(Riders)(People on horseback). Where often deployed as raiding troops.

    • @TheSegert
      @TheSegert 7 місяців тому

      @channel_lurker he probably wasnt knighted. For the sole reason nobody was at the time. We where a republic back then. So no knights. We did have old nobles of course. And they could keep their empty titles if they just acted normally. He would probably have gotten a lot of medals and honors though.

    • @TheSegert
      @TheSegert 7 місяців тому

      @channel_lurker Je zult altijd nederlanders tegenkomen in videos over nederland of nederlanders hahaha. Gekoloniseerd!
      Anyway. Later meanings even at the time of the ruyter(the spelling of his name). Ruiters was a word that basically meant cavalry. And it was most definitly his surname. As other surnames. Also uses the same naming conventions of occupation, (Slager, bakker ect).
      It also kinda proves that even in republic times. The old nobility kinda got easier access to positions of power. Like nowadays is also the case.
      The reason or this is old money. Old money gets you more money. And money in the ruyters time and now. Means. power. Or the ability to get power. Or a commision. On a ship. Like a officer.
      Plebs like me could never even get near that power. Without any money. Only if we had ecceptional talent. But even that is rare. as you often need money to cultivate that talent.

    “Tijdverdrijf” made me laugh out loud. It literally translates to “killing time”. Probably because they were bored to death sailing from location to location. This is a great example of Dutch humor.

      @lollius88 and technily he was killed by his own king. They wanted him gone because he was too successful. He gained to much of a following. So they send him on a mission with badly maintained smaller ships than usual. Only THEN they managed to kill him.

      @@drpepper3838 You don't really have any proof that the leadership set him up.
      The Republic was in a bad spot with the Rampjaar of 1672, so it is likely that they were at a deficit of sailors.
      Also, The French fleet barely did any of the fighting in the tactically inconclusive battles of Texel, Schooneveld etc.
      The French humiliated de Ruyter by repelling him from Martinique.
      The English also humiliated him by repelling him from Barbados.
      He really isnt the invincible admiral you think him as.
      The French after killing De Ruyter at Agosta launched a surprise attack on the Dutch-Spanish fleet anchored off Palermo killing the Dutch and Spanish Admiral Jan de Haen and Diego de Ibarra.
      The French withdrew from Sicily without a fight with their fleet intact.

    I find it funny how much in common admiral Michiel de Ruyter and admiral Yi Sun-sin have.
    Both started their militairy career in the army.
    Both fought against an enemy that was stronger than them.
    Both fought out numbered.
    Both defeated enemies trough strategic and tactical means.
    Both fought in a war that almost ended their countries.
    Both died in battle.

    Hello, lovely video comming from a Dutch person but there is one little detail with the modern navy ships you showed. Tromp was the guy who was in command of the Dutch navy before he got killed and replaced by de Ruyter. His son (also tromp) then made the stupid mistake in that one battle so the modern ships called tromp mainly bear the name of the father not necessarily the son
