Early Ww2 tank warfare relied on the same system still. The germans fitted every tank with a dependable radio. Too bad De Ruijter did not achieve that feat!
It should be noted that De Ruyter made a point about treating his men well. He also made sure that when they made a profit, he evenly distributed it amongst the crew of his ship. His reasoning was that everything on board would go smoother by doing that, returning the investment soon. And he was right. His (merchant) ship sailed well and fought well if necessary. He got the name "Bestevaer" from his crews. In English it has two translations. Best skipper and best father.

@Joepie De poepie (sorry for the rant in advance) people should really start to use their head more so we can prevent things like this. If things keep going the direction they’re going, the whole population will be apologising to things that happend in the past although they wouldn’t know what happend because every part of history is cancelled for being ‘inappropriate’ or ‘offensive’ or ‘hurtful’ in some way. Yes in history things happend we now condone, which is good we learned something. However you can’t expect our generations to apologise for things they didn’t do. Besides, just to talk about the slave trade as an example. If we ought to apologise for what the wic and voc, mostly the wic, did regarding the tragedy, I think all african tribes in africa that had anything to do with it should apologise to each other too. I know them helping doesn’t make what happend less bad in any way but they are just as guilty. In the second world war there were a lot of people that helped the germans, but hey they weren’t the germans so they were the victims and don’t have any reason to apologise. OR can we say that what they did and what they support was wrong and in a way f’ed up and that they were just as bad as the germans that ‘came up with it’. Let’s not forget that we should see things more relatively, we should think to ourselves:’they traded slaves, bad, but it was more common in that time, still bad but lets not forget that in their eyes it was normal.’ I think the people that put so much effort in the injustice of the past and want apologies, should invest their effort and time in the modern slavery and injustice. Nobody will become better from an apology from people who didn’t commit the tragedy they apologised for, to people that they didn’t commit it on. Let’s fight discrimination instead of history, it happend, learn and go on. Let’s acknowledge that what they did was wrong but that some of the things that they accomplished are great or special. We won’t have any historical heroes left if we don’t.
@Joepie De poepie stop overreacting, nobody is going to 'cancel' him. Nothing wrong to describe the good and the bad of our historic figures. Nobody is fully good or bad, and there is nothing wrong in seeing the nuance in things.
You mention the raid on the medway. What you fail to explain is just how important Chatham was. Being so close to London it was probably the most important shipbuilding ports in the country. The impact of this raid was monumental! By the way, for anyone interested, I believe the ornate stern of HMS Royal Charles is preserved in the museum in Amsterdam.
He came up with his last name himself, his name actually was Michiel Adriaansz. In 1636 he chose for de Ruyter, probably because his uncle was part of the Cavalry in the Dutch Army or because as you said in the beginning of the video one of his first fights/victory's was on a horseback.
How more credits can he have? He has been the only person who was granted the rank highest rank of Lieutenant Admiral General (Luitenant-admiraal-generaal). He has a massive mausoleum in the Nieuwe kerk in Amsterdam. He has a massive statue in his home town of Vlissingen. There is always one Dutch navy ship that is carrying his name. Numerous streets are named after him. In multiple museums you will find works dedicated to him. The house he was born in is a national monument. The naval school in Vlissingen is named: Maritiem Instituut de Ruyter (Maritime institute the Ruyter).
@@TheSuperhoden You mean he was send to fight the French fleet in the Mediterranean at the the request of Spain after they lost control of Messina. The Dutch fleet was combined with the Spanish fleet, while sailing to Sicily they met a French fleet with around the same numbers of ships but more firepower and the Battle of Stromboli began. After months of no further action they decided to attack Augusta to force the French fleet out once again, this became the Battle of Augusta where Michiel de Ruyter was eventually mortally wounded and died later on.
And yet nowadays people in the Netherlands want to tear down his statues because he was apparently "racist" because he wasn't an avid anti-slavery activist... Apparently freeing slaves from Barbary pirates doesn't count.

marius offing Britain did exist during this period, just not under the name united kingdom. It was against the British, english are British, they are inhabitants of the British isles, so there is absolutely nothing incorrect in his sentence. And England wasnt on its own, king James II was king of England, Scotland and Ireland.
In the 1600s, England was a separate country, with Wales in tow. None of the inhabitants then saw themselves as British. In 1707 Great Britain came about with the union of England, Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a relatively new moniker for the Union, after the union with Ireland in the early 1800s. The word 'Great' in Great Britain means 'bigger' in relation to Brittany in France btw.
marius offing Yes, all that you state in this comment is correct as far as I know, but what does most of this have to do with the original comment? Wether or not the British people saw themselves as British back then rather than English, Scottish or Welsh is irrelevant in my opinion. The English are British people, the original commenter was happy about “anyone who stuck it to the British”, I dont think there is anything factually incorrect about that sentance as Michiel de Ruyter did “stick it” to the British, wether they viewed themselves as British people back then is irrelevant.
I'll spell it out for you. You're looking at this from a 21st century context, not a 17th century context. The men who the Dutch were fighting were English, not British. They considered themselves English, not British. Capiche? As for the wazzock who made the comment about sticking it to the British, he or she is just as clueless as a lot of people are.

Fun part is that our greatest hero never was actually never an admiral. It that time admiral was the head of state (a political leader). The highest rank in that time (as in the present by law) is luitenant admiraal. Due to his many victories he was offered our highest military rank luitenant admiraal generaal. You could basically called that an admiral of all the combined forces. Due to honor him our law forbids ever to have a second luitenant admiraal generaal.
Almost correct the stadtholder is Admiraal Generaal and the highest other then the prince was Luitenant admiraal generaal And there were 2 First Michiel adriaanszn de Ruyter and the second was Cornius Tromp but the second one never sail under this title.
No, the stadhouder (city holder) was admiral of the navy and seperately also general of the army. The stadhouder was the prince of Orange. The highest rank in the navy was luitenent admiraal but he was promoted to luitenant admiraal generaal so he was chief of the navy and the army combined. After his death the title was also offered to Tromp but he didn’t accepted it because he was already admiral of the Danish navy. I can give you a reference to his bibliografy (in Dutch).
Note: De Ruyter did not lead the raid on the Medway (1667) personally, he was ill and stayed on one of the ships covering the Thames. The attack was led by Willem Joseph van Ghent.
@@Wombat1916 Do not say bullshit, they were at war, there was no truce when this attack happened. That only came after the Brits needed to surrender as their fleet was destroyed. So this victory gave peace, at least until the brits decided to attack again.

For now De Ruyter's topsails Off naked Chatham show We dare not meet him with our fleet And this the Dutchmen know! - Rudyard Kipling, The Dutch in the Medway.
He definitely holds a special place in Dutch history. The saying was that at least at sea the Republic was seeing victories, while on land the results were precarious at best. Sailors and especially Sea Scouts still refer to him using the name he received from the men under him: "Bestevaer". (Middle Dutch for "grandfather") Of course, his reputation is a bit damaged now, given that his personal fortune was based on commercial shipping to the West Indies, which implies, at that time, the slave trade.

You forgot to add that the reason why he died is because the Prinsgezinden (royalists) send him to fight the French in the Mediterranean (which was basically a death sentence since they sended him there outnumbered and outgunned). The Prinsgezinden did this because De Ruyter was a supposed ''threat'' to the Prinsgezinden (which were trying to seize power), because De Ruyter (together with the broeders de Witt (brothers de Witt) were in favor of the Republiek der Zeven Verenigde Nederlanden (Republic of the Seven United Netherlands). The ONLY reasons why De Ruyter accepted this death sentence is because the broeders de Witt were brutally murdered (I'll save the details but you can google it yourself. Warning the painting is pretty graphic) by the Prinsgezinden because one of the brothers was ''supposedly'' in a murder complot to kill the Prins of Orange, his family was threatened and he didn't want a civil war on his conscience (this because he was THE example for everyone in favor of the Republic). So yeah thanks to tyranny, murder and greed (talking about the royalists) we now have a Kingdom instead of a Republic.....
Do you have a source, because this seems like republican propaganda directly taken from the movie about his life. De Ruyter's ships were not in the best state, but his fleet was supported by a Spanish fleet and only slightly outnumbered. It wasn't a certain death sentence at all.

The battle of Chatham (the raid on the Medway) was at the time of the Dutch republic. The idea to go to Chatham was from raadspensionaris Johan de Witt. De Ruiter actually didn't want to go and Johan's brother Cornelis de Witt joined on the ship of Michiel de Ruiter to overlook the plan and to see that it would be executed.
Michiel de Ruyter won many battles using sheer wit and defeated the English Navy a few times which is impressive since the English navy was the strongest of their time and best of all, Michiel de Ruyter died at the age of “69”

Nobody is fully good or bad, and there is nothing wrong in seeing the nuance in things.
when a youtuber makes something about the dutch, it's like we're all summoned to the video ^^
Actually, it was Michiel de Ruyter who first coined the phrase "hasta la vista baby" :)
Ruyter means knight or cavalrymen right
He was a Ruyter but not in the mllitary, in his early days he rode a horse to tug a canalboat (popular way of transport in those days).

Britain didn't exist during this period. I assume you mean the English, the language you are writing in. Wazzock.
marius offing Britain did exist during this period, just not under the name united kingdom.

The Spanish armada failed because the Dutch fleet blocked the harbour in Belgium where the Armada was supposed to resupply and load up with troops to invade Great Britain. So they got stuck on sea and were picked off by English ships.
Those troops were the Army of Flanders soldiers. Gosh, Dutch people were loyal to Spain over their own leaders for centuries, thanks to money.

He definitely holds a special place in Dutch history. The saying was that at least at sea the Republic was seeing victories, while on land the results were precarious at best. Sailors and especially Sea Scouts still refer to him using the name he received from the men under him: "Bestevaer". HELD
The Admiral who showed both England and France hell on earth

De Ruiter actually didn't want to go and Johan's brother Cornelis de Witt joined on the ship of Michiel de Ruiter to overlook the plan and to see that it would be executed.
sorry maar dat komt uit de anti konings huis film ;) en klopt niet (bij lange na niet)
The Royal Dutch Navy will always have a man-o-war named for the ship on which De Ruyter performed his greatest feats: de Zeven Proviciën.
Michiel de Ruyter won many battles using sheer wit and defeated the English Navy a few times which is impressive since the English navy was the strongest of their time and best of all, Michiel de Ruyter died at the age of “69”
The dutch navy was the biggest in the latter half of the 17th century, British domination came much later
The Dutch navy was far superior than the English one
@@drpepper3838to be fair the English had the biggest ship a true behemoth called the Royal sovereign
@outrider425 HAHAHA the royal sovereign was outdated by the time of anglo dutch wars.
@outrider425 and we had better shipbuilding technology. We used windmills to saw timber speeding up the proces much faster. For every ship the English build we could build 3. And much cheaper too.
Kaper now means hijacker but used to mean privateer: they had official documents saying they worked for a government. They were not considered pirates but they were not an official navy.
