One of the most Iconic british series ever. And sadly one of the most unknown and underrated. I honestly think the first season finale is perfect. The second season was almost as good as the first, but that ending was begging for a 3rd season that now will never come. The first season is a masterpiece of moral ambiguity. And is probably the most stylized series I've ever seen, from photography to music. This should be enough to sell anyone on watching Utopia. and if it isn't, then it might just not be for you. If you like this, you'll love the series. Believe me when I say is no style over substance. Is style plus substance.
Season 1 was amasterpiece of moral ambiguity? Bruh, Janus would end up killing the entire human race, ever seen Children of Men? Imagine that but way worse as the world would probably find out that Janus can't be reversed. Humanity wouldn't have time to grow old and wither away, we'd definitely find a way to speed up our expiration date. Not to mention The Network didn't even care how many people they were killing to get the comic and send out Janus, there was nothing positive about them.
I think the series closed perfectly. I mean. Sometimes leaving some bits is better than throwing them away (the way it finishes the stories of 15 characters in 50 minutes perfectly is delicious. And the fact they didn't just show how Wilson murdered all of them despite we know he obviously did makes it really more frightening, even more considerimg it's done just a second after rIan discovered the "cure" for Debby's disease and she killed herself one minute before he came with the answer and he could miraculously save her life). Seriously. A masterpiece. It was able to make a perfect implicit finale
Arby's sidekick carries out a brutal murder in public, step by step, methodically to instill that fear amongst others. The casual manner of execution almost makes it feel like it's a 9 to 5 job for these guys. This makes rest of them accept the uncertainty of the gas mask, which they know more or less is going to kill them as well. But they want to take that chance of going to sleep because they have seen what the other consequence is. Makes the scene much more sinister and believable... Brilliant writing... Wish there was a comic of Utopia as well

@JimR Fairly realistic scenario, most people when faced with mortal danger tend to just freeze up, some run those with some training or a duty/expectation to do something (like cops or emergency workers in general) will actively resist or act against whatever force is happening because they tend to be the ones to take charge of these sorts of situations out in the real world. Lee and Arby working together or being as a character duo is fucking terrifying. Even if you separate them, they’re still scary on their own. Like how Arby (Pietre) single-handedly killed a fully armed SWAT team to save the protagonists in S2 E2, while Lee kills Ian’s boss while still acting sane and playful but still made a bit of a mess to cover it up in S2 E3.
I watched this opening scene 3 years ago while trying to find a light Australian office comedy of the same name based around how Australian democratic politics and weakness for office fads and new technology which is not necessarily an improvement worsens infrastructure planning. The comic book store owners passivity in going to his death was at that point the most chilling thing I had ever seen. I just finished season one of this Utopia, it's pretty good.

your thinking the drawing is her names spelling and your wrong, the drawing gave Kristof the idea for the name, but the spelling did not stay the same, the spelling is "hyde" as seen in the credits in every episode shes a character in. If your confused on why that is, its because "hide" would be an unusual name in the UK, while "hyde" is more common in the UK, making it easier for her to blend in. reference: www.imdb.com/character/ch0464921/?ref_=tt_cl_t4

The people don't want to die but they don't think "hey, I've seen their faces, heard their voices and they"ve killed infront of me. Why would they let me go when they could easily leave." Gives me chills every time I watch this. Utopia is one of the very few shows that I can see myself re-watching multiple times.
This whole scene is better then US remake trash..
Yeah? lets see what you say when the US remake makes it to season3 and ur still stuck on season 2, lol!!
@@swandivemedia9249 agreed! Maza is dumb! LOL!
@@spacemanOS buddy, you wouldn't know film if ur dad handed it to you! LOL!
@@bentriple3 Lol? You don't know me. I know film more than anyone you know. Have you ever heard of Psycho? Probably not, watch it. Educate yourself.
cant lie I havent seen the original but just finished the us remake...and I'm gonna watch the original version it looks way better ...just from this scene alone
Thank you Pyro my sweet furry boy, for bringing me the joy of this series
Such a good show. Didn't need to watch a 7 hour video to know that.
What?
@@StinkyGreenBud There's a 7 hour long video on YT that critiques both the original UK version and the dreadful US one.
Can’t believe this was cut
I watched this opening scene 3 years ago while trying to find a light Australian office comedy of the same name based around how Australian democratic politics and weakness for office fads and new technology which is not necessarily an improvement worsens infrastructure planning.
The comic book store owners passivity in going to his death was at that point the most chilling thing I had ever seen. I just finished season one of this Utopia, it's pretty good.
The scene nailed me to the screen.
Was even better then the opening scene of "Lost".
If this doesn't get you interested in watching UTOPIA, don't bother.
Well, that wasn't mind blowing. It's like an inside joke that i just didn't get. Of course, if you've watched the show, you understand what's going on, but for someone who hasn't like me, it's just ...interesting.
+Haendal Rocher. There is no inside joke in this opening scene. I think he means it like he says it. If you don't like this kind of vibe in a series and don't like the colorful scenes don't bother watching it. And if your interested by the opening scene ill advise you two watch the whole series.
Wilson Wilson
Yeah, what Mr. Vreeling said. It's the opening scene, so none of us knew what was going on when we saw it. But it's a HELL of a hook, for those of us into this sort of nonsense ...
It was clearly inspired by the opening scenes from no country for old men, but i really love it
Thanks for the heads up. I was tempted to check it out, now I know I shouldn't bother.
Sadly I have just started watching this. My mind is blown!!! The British version naturally. I cannot believe I missed such an innovative, beautiful... At times super brutal show!! And then the Americans tried and failed to make their own version and I didn't even bother!
.....
I thought Utopia was one of the best TV series ever; the filiming was beautiful and the story line very well thought out;a rela 'must see'.
That intro just hits me.
Is there anyway we could bring this TV BACK PLEASE
someone could buy the rights to the show and continue the show from there
+Kyle Demoderpifnlikskin hope netflix does it

Been 10 years and I still think about the themes of this show.
More prescient now than ever.
これから始まる物語の不吉さを感じる、素敵な入り。
ワクワク感がたまらない。
Brilliant show.
I always thought it was weird how Channel Four just stopped production of this critically acclaimed series… basically the plot to 2019
Best sountrack ever
You think it is the best because you have never listened to ambience and/or environmental genre in music. It is good.. but it never jumped out of me throughout the seasons.
@@machiavellianos ok, I was exaggerating a bit, but so did you when you jumped to conclusion that my music horizon is narrow and my view on ambiental soundscapes is limited : ))) To stay on the topic I do recommend you to check how this soundtrack was made.
@@transparence what is the name of the soundtrack and the artist?
God, when he tries to run away but knows that he can't do anything, then knowing what's incoming... It's fucking terrifying and I would lie if I told you that this scene didn't traumatized me the first time. It makes me realize that something like this (of course, not exactly *LIKE* this) could happen any day. Amazing acting, amazing writing, outstanding series
Yeah exactly. Something like this could happen to anyone any day. It's very possible in a place like America. Like you're at a store buying groceries and the next thing you know is there's a psychopath holding you at gunpoint. Very scary.
@@mrjoe9545 Mexico is a scary place. Outside of exclusive vacation areas, you would have to be a moron to go there.
Now, this is how you do telly.
Excelente serie... la mejor que he visto hasta ahora. La segunda temporada está tb genial... Me encanta la estética, además de la historia y los actores obvio.
Love the music for this show too; it’s so weird and uncanny yet almost hauntingly familiar, it’s great when music is that effective in adding to a scene that it leaves a profound effect.
Where is Jessica Hyde?
*Hyde, read the credits again
your thinking the drawing is her names spelling and your wrong, the drawing gave Kristof the idea for the name, but the spelling did not stay the same, the spelling is "hyde" as seen in the credits in every episode shes a character in. If your confused on why that is, its because "hide" would be an unusual name in the UK, while "hyde" is more common in the UK, making it easier for her to blend in.

Such a great period of creativity in TV and music during that period in the U.K., miss those days.

DJ Avel explain more please
thank you pyro for introducing me to this series
So the bag resembles a smiley, and the school shooting scene has a giant text that says "LOL".
What the fuck
Sloth Guru yeah pretty grim stuff, but very entertaining
Watched this because I saw the trailer for the US Utopia and I wanted to check this out before I watched it.
Needless to say I doubt I'm ever gonna watch the US one now.
Where can I watch the serie?
@@sergioortiz778 Amazon, it's incredible.
Lmao can’t believe Amazon saw this and genuinely thought “yeah, we can make a better version of this show”
this tv series has the most beautiful color choices I've ever seen.
This series is A graphic novel Dressed up as a tv series and its amazing
If there only ever existed the Amazon version of this show, i would have enjoyed it. I sawe this when it orginally came out, and it eviscerates the Amazon show in every single way imaginable. Just wish we had got to see it in its unswervingly beautiful yet brutally intense entirety.
I like how he just asks politely to leave after witnessing a dude get his brains bashed in and all he can say is "oh no" lol great dark humor
Edit- lmao I saw this way before Pyrocynicals video made this show blow up
Your edit is obvious because you posted this comment 1 year ago.
Wasnt really meant to be humorous, just realistic. It makes sense that someone would instantly freeze up after suddenly witnessing something like that. The lack of rational thinking let's him naively believe that the tank will only put him to sleep because of how welcoming Lee is about it and because it's not as violent as what he just saw
Welcome back.
We know this isn't your first time here.
did anyone else feel like crying after watching this? xD
So amazing to see the comment section lit up so recent for a clip uploaded in 2013!
Kelly and Donnelly did such an incredible job with this show. I can't say that I'd ever watch the remake but I think its more than obvious plenty of us would binge season three.

"Don't put the gas away yet"
Fuck me, man. I watched the show on Amazon before I saw the Uncut version, what a fucking brutal punch to your system. I fucking love this show.
I think the most sinister thing about Arby and the killers like him is the way they kill. Its not over the op, its SOOOO simple. "I'm not gona kill you like that guy, your fine, just breath this gas, it"ll knock you out and you"ll be fine." The people don't want to die but they don't think "hey, I've seen their faces, heard their voices and they"ve killed infront of me. Why would they let me go when they could easily leave."
Their so, polite, about killing you, atleast, when they aren"t torturing you/
I know this is like 2 years in the future but his name is peitre and his pseudonym isn’t arby it’s, RB
I love UTOPIA. 💛
after watching the prime remake of this and watching the original i have to say the original is superior. especially in music. there were somethings they did better in the prime remake but overall you cant beat the original.
I've seen this video like 10 times, and I've never noticed until now that there was a kid underneath that table. Like how did I even miss that?
Everyone asks "Where is Jessica hyde".
But no-one asks: "How is Jessica Hyde"
This needs a 3rd series pronto.
@Jake Miller " I watched three episodes of this filthy series. Utopia has NO REDEEMING SOCIAL VALUE." I'm afraid you didn't watch enough, Jake. The motivator for what's going on is the biggest problem humanity faces, that nobody wants to face, nobody talks about. I've no doubt the second series will ram the point home even more brutally than the first series has.
When they come for you, and they will, always, always make them work for it.
Does anyone know if there is some script available to learn how the story was supposed to end?
Amazon reportedly ordered a remake! Just read anbout it, best day ever.

Utter hyperbole.
Almost everyone i've told to watch this series stopped after S1E1, couz they could't handle this scene. XD

One of the best series first scene and one of the best series.
Absolutely Brilliant!
The acting in this scene is actually really well done
La escena final del conejo me ha conquistado, voy a verla!
