PART 2
This is a new series where we are learning the whole of Kenny Burrell's 'Midnight Blue' from his 1963 album of the same name. There will be a new lesson every Saturday where we will learn another chorus from this excellent tune! And there will be TAB on screen!
In this lesson we look at the first chorus in the solo! This is full of easy jazz and blues licks which are ideal if you are getting started in jazz. We also look at how to navigate over a minor 2 - 5 - 1, how to play over dominant 7th chords, enclosure, outside playing and more! Phew!
I then give you some all important tips on how to use these devices in your solos.
Next week we will be looking at the 2nd chorus from the solo!

Thank you for sharing! 2:46
I'm mainly a blues player but I've always loved Kenny, Wes and Grant Green. These videos give me a glimpse into what they're doing so that I can incorporate it into my own playing. Ty!
Thank you great theory etc & vids 👍👍👍 I'm learning jazz
Great teacher!
Excellent lesson, looking forward to working on this!
love this!! thank you!
Nice. I still listen to Midnight Blue. Cheers, Ian.
Such a great album!
This video is a gem! a great dissection of an even greater song. That "enclosure" technique will definitely come in handy. Thank you!
Ah thanks Jens! Really glad you found it helpful. Tune in Saturday 4pm for the next chorus. There’s so much more to learn from this solo.
I've been wanting to learn this for quite a while now and watching your video has been very helpful tbf. Thank you !

I don’t but I’ll pop it on my list!
Nice lesson!
Thanks Lothar! And thanks for your email, I’ll go on over to your channel when I get a minute 😊
Hi. Great lesson. Does your Patreon site include all the Kenny Burrell tabs?
Hi Simon yes it does 😊
@@SteveDownExeterGuitarLessons Do you do Mule?
What is your guitar - I have a Hofner thinline senator from a bout 1965 which is OK but is best looked at and admired while playing my ES175 but yours looks like a high end model and proper nice full sound.
This one is a Jimmy Bruno signature model. 1 of 6. It never went to a factory run as he went to Shadowsky instead.
👌
Do you think sound is better with fingers than pick- you get bass and chords without pick
For this tune personally I prefer using my pick :-)
🍻
👍👍👍
Thanks Sam!
too much talking.. just simply playing needed
Thanks for the feedback but perhaps you need to try a different style of video. Rather than criticising something that’s not meant for you 😊
love this, thanks so much!
You’re welcome!
