    I know this was filmed before recent events, but I hope Ed recovers quickly and isn't in pain from his appendectomy! Loved the adorable babies, shame about that one but thank you for being so upfront and honest that breeding doesn't always go perfectly and for humanely helping that little guy pass! ❣️

    Two things I really admire about Snake Discovery are that a) you're open, honest, and educational about what to do when things go wrong, such as here when a baby snake was just not compatible with life; and b) when something goes wrong, you always look into why it happened and report your findings, including any mistakes you may have made and how you're going to improve practices going forward. The personal and scientific integrity that shows is a big part of why I keep coming back to this channel.
    I'm sad for the poor kinked/fused baby, but take comfort in knowing that it went as peacefully and painlessly as was possible given the situation. Thank you, Emily and Ed, for always striving to make the best possible decisions for your animals' quality of life and death, and for helping others know how to do the same.

    • @Annie_Annie__
      @Annie_Annie__ 3 місяці тому +64

      I think they want them eating rodent parts so that they don’t have to switch them from slugs to rodents as the snakes get bigger.
      In those situations there’s going to be some snakes that insist on not wanting to eat rodents and it’s a big pain training them that this is their food now.
      It’s probably easier to start with rodents so that the smell is similar at all stages of their lives and they’re more likely to continue eating well for their next owners.

    It's so shocking how the baby with mold on it had such a mild kink to it, very able to survive and thrive and yet the egg that was perfectly fine (and one could argue the healthiest being separated from the moldy egg) had a deformity so extremely terrifying and sad. Imagine your belly and legs being fused but you're still somehow able to rip yourself open in your attempt to survive, that's so scary...

    Just wanted to say I SO appreciate the honesty and transparency that you two put into these videos. It can be so tempting to shelter people from the realities of life and death, but it doesn’t help anything not to prepare ourselves for those situations as best we can and to deal with them in the kindest way possible to the animal. Sometimes euthanasia is a kindness, and it’s our responsibility as keepers to save the animal from suffering further when it’s plainly obvious they physically cannot survive.
    The more we can face reality, the better we can prepare to reduce harm as much as possible. Emily remained curious about the science behind why that snake developed the way it did, and that allowed her to learn and grow and become a better keeper.

    I absolutely love how transparent Emily is. Many breeders wouldn’t admit that they made a mistake with incubating the babies at an abnormal temperature for this species, but snake discovery is totally transparent about their breeding practices. Good or bad. This is an amazing learning experience about a species that not many people have had the chance to breed. We as humans learn by others mistakes. This is an amazing learning experience thanks to Snake discovery’s transparency. Thank you Emily for always allowing your audience to learn along side you during your breeding experiences ❤. While researching Dekays brown snakes, your channel was the first that I came across that actually showed the tiny babies eating. My daughter and I purchased a dekays through a not so great breeder and she ended up giving birth (now I assume she was wild caught), and because if you, those little dekays had their best chance at life!

    For your first year breeding this species, 2 out of 5 healthy babies is pretty impressive. As you said, always more to learn and keep in mind for next breeding season. I hope our little kinky baby is able to thrive and go to a good home!

    Thanks for sharing even the unpleasant parts. I had wondered about humane euthanasia of the deformed babies, but was kinda afraid to ask (or even Google it). I’m glad you have humane procedures for when it has to happen. This is a great, informative and entertaining channel! Hatching videos are my favorite.

    Hi . You guys are practically the only channel I watch. I am excited to speak to you. I love science reptiles and animals. my name is Taya and I am 8. I used my Dad's account. my dad's name is Lee. He has lots of snake and lizards and tarantulas. I love watching your channel it's my favourite thing I watch and I think you are the best thing in the world. I have a turtle called shellington and I did have two stick bugs one called moody and the other one cutie but moody died today it made me so so so so sad 😭 I'm lucky to have one shed skin from her as a memory. I love reptiles 🐍🐊🦎 I enjoy watching your channel. Emily and Ed I love your egg hatching videos and the ones that you put in the incubator. Thank you for all your awesome videos. Love taya

    Happy to see the first hatching video this season! Oof on the kink/survival odds tho :( Thank you for being open and honest with your breeding. Maybe in nature, eastern milksnake mommas go deeper into caves for cooler incubation temps?

    So unfortunate about the two that didn't make it, but at least the other three hatched out relatively healthy and in good shape (aside from the minor kinks)! I'd bet the higher than normal temp they were incubated at is the culprit of the problems, so fingers crossed that the survivors thrive under your care and that next years clutch has better success.

    Adorable! Milk Snakes are awesome. I recently found a Fox Snake in the wild that was maybe subadult and their pattern is similar, just with that Ratsnake head shape etc. I love any of the greyscale stuff! That said some Eastern Milksnakes are absolutely gorgeous, with more reds etc but yours should have more as they age than some eh? Congratulations on the awesome clutch!

    Hmm, with the super kinked/fused baby coming from a “healthy” egg and the possibility of issues caused by the incubation temp, I suspect that the smallest baby was the one that hatched from the moldy egg, not the one with the minor kink! I’m also curious to know if the baby that died in the egg had any kinks/deformities, which could explain why it didn’t make it… If so, that would support my theory that the tiny baby is the moldy egg baby, since obviously the whole clutch was susceptible to developing issues regardless of the condition of the eggs.
    …Actually, I almost wonder if the moldy egg might’ve had an advantage?? If the issues were caused by a higher incubation temp, I wonder if it basically caused the babies to grow too quickly (especially because they started pipping way ahead of schedule) which led to things like the skin developing after the babies were big enough to be squished more tightly against themselves, hence the fusing… In which case, if the moldy egg’s growth was at all stunted, perhaps that sort of… kept it from growing too fast, like the others? I don’t know, I’m not a herpetologist! I don’t even know if that’s why a higher incubation temp is a problem, I’m just guessing!
