    Within a few years the V90 CC will be a very common car on the swedish roads, both as a police car and company lease car. Its a swedish wagon favourite. 😀 🇸🇪

      Autogefühl however, I'm not complaining over my Passat GTE either. It too is a great and comfortable/relaxing car (but V90 CC is in a higher level in that sense) and GTE has better handling than the V90 CC in my opinion.

      yes indeed. The V90 is also way bigger, I sometimes think that those upper mid-size segment cars are a little overdone, mid-size cars like Volvo 60 or VW Passat etc. offer you better price/performance ratio and are also easier to handle

    Pity he didn`t put it to it`s limits which are as impressive as an Audi Allroad. A bit harsh on this Swedish beautie if you ask me.What young man would not have this as a family car with lab in back? A very solid built safe car bang for bucks i think. But it is not the first time Volvo have had the coolest estates on the block!

      We have researched this issue for many years now so please take your time to go through our extensive resources stated below as they answer every single question we have yet received concerning this matter.
      At Autogefühl, we have already received several thousands (!) comments, messages and mails that more and more people want to combine enjoying their car with reducing the environmental impact at the same time. We believe that sustainable luxury is possible or at least we should do everything to support that. Those many thousand people confirming this trend, motivate us to give you the most authentic information and background on the product parts. It is not about what you bought in the past, and it is not about blaming anyone, it is about what you decide in the future and what you can decide and influence as a customer. So we want you to have all information that you need for a decision you later enjoy and like best yourself.
      In Summer 2017, Tesla motors has decided to be the first manufacturer to go all the way with sustainable seat materials, only offering fabric/cloth seats or leatherette seats in different colours. They have banned all real leather from the seating surface and at the steering wheel in the white trim or on demand. So Tesla shows where the industry will and must be heading, just like they went forward with electrification first.

      List of practical reasons against animal skin seats:
      1. animal skin seats are often sold as an expensive option, by going for base trim level seats you can save a lot of money and get a better price-performance-deal (often the manufacturers claim that animal leather is top of luxury because they can earn the best money with it)
      2. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat, probably you need seat cooling
      3. they get very cold in winter and you need seat heating
      4. on cloth or microfibre surfaces, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling
      5. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like an old sofa
      6. if you want leather look or need seats that can be wiped clean easier, the leatherette (faux leather) surfaces are meanwhile highly evolved and it is possible that it feels even softer and better than anything else (See our Tesla Model X review ua-cam.com/video/y2wNGFKa4M0/v-deo.html) So Tesla shows a good example for that and as described, non-leather materials are now standard for ALL Tesla
      7. More manufacturer names for their good alternatives: Mercedes MBTex/Artico for leatherette, Dinamica for microfibre. BMW Sensatec, Toyota Sof-Tex, Lexus Nu-Luxe (all faux leather)
      To the environmental reasons:
      1. The way the cows and other intelligent and social animals are raised and held are not according to the basic values that we all share (also see videos below)
      2. The factory farming industry can be accounted for at least 40 % of climate emissions and thus is (according to numerous sources you can look up) the number one reason for climate change and environmental destruction. It is the number one reason for deforestation, two thirds of all agricultural land on earth is used for growing animal food crops. If you would feed humans directly by using the agricultural land, you could produce much more food for everyone.       3. It is not only cows who are suffering, but also the environment and to a big part also humans. Think of slavery-like working conditions in slaughterhouses (there are plenty of documentaries about this) or think of chemically altered drinking water in animal skin production villages as also seen in the video footage.
      4. The discussion, for which body part the cow is killed first, is very patronizing. But if you really think it would be important why someone gets killed in first place: There are many productions where the cow is killed for the skin first, sometimes even while still being (part-)alive, the skin is the most profitable single part of the body.
      5. So even if a cow gets theoretically killed for meat first, in every case you give additional money to an industry that relies on killing, pollutes the environment and harms people with chemicals. Let's say you are standing at the meat counter. And you ask for the leg of the cow. The butcher tells you: "You can eat that without worrying, the cow was slaughtered for the neck first". The next customer demands the neck. The butcher tells him: "It's not your fault, the cow was slaughtered for the belly". A the next customer demands the hide, what answer does he get? You see, that argument of "byproduct" comes from the meat and leather industry to cover up that you contribute to killing no matter which part of the body you buy.
      6. To the often said argument, animal skin would just be a byproduct, please google/youtube "leather is not a byproduct" you will find plenty of information. A good overview on all those issues can also be found here: adaptt.org/
      To “But leatherette is not sustainable due to petrochemical production”
      1. Indeed some fabrics and micro fibres are oil based, however most oil is spent on energy production, heating and fuel. The share of oil used for artificial cloth etc. is very very small.
      2. If you look at the whole production process, the leatherette is way more sustainable than the leather produce.
      3. The best to-come solution are indeed plant-based materials like Pinatex (based on pineapple leaves) or new materials based on mycelia (roots of mushrooms) or other innovative natural products. That’s the future.

Please note that those videos are made by well-known journalists and cameramen who were not influenced by any animal welfare organisation, they supply their footage to the animal rights groups of course. I partly know the creators of the video footage personally and they are all authentic. You don’t have to search long to find cruel production environments anyway.
      Manufacturers reactions:
      We started the very first inquiry years ago, with the result that car manufacturers do not reveal their sources of animal skin AT ALL. If it all would be clean and happening without harm, why don’t they show it to us whereas they are showing us every other detail of their products? They have good reason not to, because there is no such thing as a clean animal skin production without harming cows, humans and the environment. The only thing a manufacturer can do is increase their effort for a better future, and we are helping with in-depth talks and interviews by presenting the increasing customer demand for sustainable luxury. Tesla was the first one to react in a major way now.
      So meanwhile, we more often also get feedback that a lot of manufacturers are working on leather-free interiors and are aware of the situation. E.g. Bentley, Mini and Kia have started vegan car interior programmes. Besides Tesla, Mercedes already shows major choices for sustainable interiors, you always have to pay attention to the details when ordering, of course - and we are happy to give advice. However, much has to be done still and the Autogefuehl community is massively helping in boosting the positive change!

    Hey Thomas. Re the manual gear changes. On my Audi S3 it's the same, push up to go up a gear, pull down to go down. Does not feel right but you get used to it. Thank goodness I've got the paddles!! Another great review as usual!!😃

    The gearbox manual mode has + downwards because when you shift a normal Manual car, you go 1-2 (downwards) and to shift down 2-1 (going up) So it makes sense

    Agreed with the buttons on the steering wheel, not the nicest.
    I got equally confused about the BMW reverse logic of manually shifting the auto gear boxes.
    Agree that there is no need for extra 120kg of double clutch.
    I was surprised about the V90CC off-road ability, better than expected.
    Booster seats in the rear sadly not yet able to be combined with heated seats.
    Great car, even with only half the optional equipment of the test vehicle, traditionally extra toys are expensive.

    Looks really nice, but very expensive with the options. Of the other cars in this segment, the most comparable for interior size and similar estate with raised suspension is the much cheaper Passat Alltrack. That has cloth seats if you want, a huge boot and a dual clutch gearbox with pedal shifters. Not quite so up market, but if you had the 240bhp 2.0 diesel biturbo model Passat Alltrack (not available in UK), you'd have a 0 to 60mph in 6 seconds and money to spare. A comparison of these different 4x4 estates would be a good idea.

    I'm looking forward to your review of the Volvo XC40 when it comes out next year. I'm delaying my replacement car until then. The V90 looks OK but it is more than I want to pay. And I really don't like tinted windows.

    I have a volvo and a volkswagen. People say you can’t beat german build quality. Though the VW is very well built like all german cars, the Volvo is better. Germany have the best build quality reputation because they have more car manufacturers than Sweden but I would say Volvo are making amazing cars. That said, the VW was cheaper, so you get what you pay for I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Hello Thomas. I agree with your comment about the steering wheel design being disgracious (in my own words). Actually, it makes me think more of a utility vehicle: more of a truck than a luxury car.
    Oh, while I leave a comment here, a while back, you had started some kind of "Autogeful light show" (you were in search of a name) and it would be nice if you could show us more how interiors look when they are illuminated at night. I recenty viewed a video about the Audi A4 interior lighting and it was amazing! (Done in an underground parking.)

    Great Review, and really good commentary. At time 30:44, I find these sudden over sensitive alerts (and braking) are alarming and give you - and your passengers - an unnecessary fright; as you're driving along in a quiet relaxed fashion. Interesting you say Volvos do this. You didn't appear to be over the white line - could this be the AEB warning system detecting the parked white Hyundai because at the time of the alarm the steering wheel angle was still to the right due to the sharp (and 'blind') right corner, and the speed was at a necessary threshold?     from my point of view the steering wheel fits good for design of interior, a little worse for me is in new s-class it doesn´t look cheap but previous steering wheel fits better

    @Autogefühl Thomas.
    I see your reviews. Every time you lament the lack of fabric options for leather only.
    And to tell you the truth, I couldn't agree more. I can't for the love of me understand the fascination with leather.
    It's expensive, offensive, uncomfortable when cold, uncomfortable when hot.
    I usually tell the car salesmen that when I want better seats or upgrades, leather become my only option usually. Which is kind of bullshit. I'd gladly pay the leather premium for an upgraded fabric instead of the basic one.
    I think fabrics done right can be really, really pretty too. This is just an underdeveloped area.
    Other than that I still think most reviewers miss out on testing real car capabilities. My problem with cars is that when you try them out they feel nice, but when you start using them in real life you discover that they are dysfunctional in key areas that constitute the basic stuff of actually being a car.
    Usually that manifests itself in more difficult environmental conditions than "summer, high friction and slow driving".
    I live up in the north. So I usually discover dysfunctional headlights, heating, cooling, fogging. To low feedback steering (electrical) during icy conditions. Breaking is geared towards comfort, not safety. So pedal travel requires way to much force to full brake pressure. Clogging wheels due to slush. Frozen windshield wipers and wiper fluid containers. Some cars freeze their stuff more easily although you have -18 proof celcius windshield wiper fluid.
    There are literally dozens and dozens of these scenarios. For example. I have two German made cars now. One is a F10 520d from -16. I have changed the windshield on both cars 5 times. At the slightest hint of a stone chip, the cars crack their windshield. So the BMW has 5 windshield changes in 1,5 year. And no, I am not driving close on highways. I used to drive old SAABs. They completed more than 400000k and the winshields were way, way worn because of all the stone showers. But they would never ever crack.
    So for me, the devil is in the details. Stuff you never can tell from a review.
    Anyway. Thanks for your great reviews man. Always on top with new stuff, informative, extensive. :)

      Christian M - I’ve been through the same thing with recent BMWs and their windshields. Two different models (X1 and 340) both with heads-up and those windshields were quite expensive! The only worse experience has been our Jeep Wrangler JL (on the 3rd windshield in only 1 year), but there’s now a gorilla glass option for the JLs. I’d be happy to pay extra for a windshield (and plastic cladding underneath, etc) that can actually survive winter. I’m looking at the Videos V60 and V90 Cross Country models in the hopes that the Swedes (Chinese) get that better. BTW, agree with all the comments that Thomas is the most thorough reviewer. Great job!

    Is it possible to have seat ventilation in cloth seats? I know it's an overkill but sometimes when it's very hot, by the time i cool down in the car my back is already sweating.

    A4/A6 Allroads also have the same small plastic part on the rear door, nothing specific to Volvo there.

      Miloš Mileusnić Well spotted! The E-Class All Terrain has the same. Not sure why, because I agree that it seems a bit odd. I'm sure Volvo had the Cross Country version already in mind when designing the V90, but I guess they preferred to maximise the door opening...who knows.

    I'm looking for a new car right now. I'm thinking to get a Volvo. I currently driving a BMW 320d M Packet Touring. But I want something more comfortable and les sporty. I was thinking t get an SUV, the XC90 or the new XC60 or this V90 CC. What would you say witch is the most relaxing and comfortable to drive? Or should I look somewhere else? Like Jaguar F-Pace, or BMW X3? Nice reviews by the way.

    Okay Thomas, your reviews are such excellent escapes from the mundacity of the other UA-cam (so-called) auto reviewers, that even your mistakes are acceptable (Volvo has been making cross country vehicles for years - full disclosure I own a 2007 xc70 - ) that said, your reaction to spotting a Jaguar F-Pace "customer vehicle" - at 18:15 - is priceless

    Thanks Thomas for great review I do prefer animals skin they should give a choice to customers . Is anyone know if it's possible two fitted a bigger fuel tank 71 litres witches in xc 60 D 5 I will be happy with the 60 if the MPG what Clem the manufacturer is probably + 40 % and Thomas please test headlight ( high beam and low Beam) during the night 😀😀

    Climate control buttons/dials: I get very puzzled by the number of motoring journalists who criticise this. My last 4 cars have had climate control and once set up to the right temperature I press "auto" and that's it, no touching the controls except in winter to defrost the screen. So long as there is a button to enable this function, I do not see the problem with putting climate control functions onto a touchscreen in a hidden menu. However if it's just ordinary manual air conditioning or heater, then that is a different matter

      yes if you leave it with the auto function thats true. As for me, I basically have two setups. Either no AC and LOW or AC with 22 degrees. Thats why I like to switch around...

      Also you can bypass the touchscreen and simply use the voice control to turn on/off the A/C, set temperatures, etc

    my old fiat stilo from 2001 had that solution for children so nothing new 14:57 , I must say day by day we are paying too much to a car to go from point A to B, do not get me wrong i like cars and I like to drive big distances now I have the new fiat Tipo 5 doors 1.6 diesel and I can say for that range of price here in portugal 23000 euros it works fine is comfy enough is not the best car for "rancing drive" but have space it runs cheap and have more than enough power 320 Nm and it tax "cheap" cars like volvo V90 who cost 75000 and beyond are only to show the technology that the brand have. what cars had cruise control in the past now we will find it in any smaller car (corsa polo fiesta punto) if not it is in the optional list ....but ( volvo V90) is a good car with a lot of technology some of them you will never use it but good review Thomas keep up the good work greetings from portugal

      1. animal skin seats are often sold as an expensive option, by going for base trim level seats you can save a lot of money and get a better price-performance-deal (often the manufacturers claim that animal leather is top of luxury because they can earn the best money with it)
      2. animal skin seats get hot in summer and you stick to the seat, probably you need seat cooling
      3. they get very cold in winter and you need seat heating
      4. on cloth or microfibre surfaces, you basically don’t need seat heating nor cooling
      5. animal skin seats wear out very fast and look like an old sofa

The factory farming industry can be accounted for at least 40 % of climate emissions and thus is (according to numerous sources you can look up) the number one reason for climate change and environmental destruction. It is the number one reason for deforestation, two thirds of all agricultural land on earth is used for growing animal food crops. If you would feed humans directly by using the agricultural land, you could produce much more food for everyone.       3. It is not only cows who are suffering, but also the environment and to a big part also humans.       4. The discussion, for which body part the cow is killed first, is very patronizing. But if you really think it would be important why someone gets killed in first place: There are many productions where the cow is killed for the skin first, sometimes even while still being (part-)alive, the skin is the most profitable single part of the body.
      5. So even if a cow gets theoretically killed for meat first, in every case you give additional money to an industry that relies on killing, pollutes the environment and harms people with chemicals. Let's say you are standing at the meat counter. And you ask for the leg of the cow. The butcher tells you: "You can eat that without worrying, the cow was slaughtered for the neck first". The next customer demands the neck. The butcher tells him: "It's not your fault, the cow was slaughtered for the belly". A the next customer demands the hide, what answer does he get? You see, that argument of "byproduct" comes from the meat and leather industry to cover up that you contribute to killing no matter which part of the body you buy.

      To “But leatherette is not sustainable due to petrochemical production”
      1. Indeed some fabrics and micro fibres are oil based, however most oil is spent on energy production, heating and fuel. The share of oil used for artificial cloth etc. is very very small.
      2. If you look at the whole production process, the leatherette is way more sustainable than the leather produce.
      3. The best to-come solution are indeed plant-based materials like Pinatex (based on pineapple leaves) or new materials based on mycelia (roots of mushrooms) or other innovative natural products. That’s the future.

The only thing a manufacturer can do is increase their effort for a better future, and we are helping with in-depth talks and interviews by presenting the increasing customer demand for sustainable luxury. Tesla was the first one to react in a major way now.
      So meanwhile, we more often also get feedback that a lot of manufacturers are working on leather-free interiors and are aware of the situation. E.g. Bentley, Mini and Kia have started vegan car interior programmes. Besides Tesla, Mercedes already shows major choices for sustainable interiors, you always have to pay attention to the details when ordering, of course - and we are happy to give advice.     Wonderfull car - Im a Volvo owner and love these cars. BUT: I just hate the touch screen.... Cant use it on bumpy roads, lots of greasy fingers - terrible. I much prefer my current V40 and V60, in that regard.

    The manual shift pattern is the same in Audi and Porsche - push forward to shift up, pull back to downshift to a lower gear. It feels natural going from my TT to the Macan, but when I tested a BMW i kept getting it wrong.

      Rohan Iyer we are both right. I just watched the instructional video from Porsche and they explained that the 911 shift is opposite to their other PDK, with shifting direction matching the g-force pull when accelerating (pull) and decelerating (push).

      You should instead be working for humane farming, instead of coming up with mostly untrue rationalizations to justify your horror at modern mass production practices of food and other animal products. I worked in 95 degree F temps for 25 years in the southern USA and the most comfortable seats I ever had were leather in an F150. Vinyl will burn you in that environment, and cloth will absorb odors and dust from workers. I donate to the humane farming association, but I don't kid myself that the cow knows what's going to happen to it in a proper factory.

      @@raupenimmersatt6906 To an extent that is true, so what happens to the skins from the animals that are killed for food in western Europe then ? thrown away ? I would hardly think so.
      The reason the Chinese provide leather as a dedicated business is because as a rule they do not consume beef ! fact, they prefer Pork, fact, are you telling me they throw the meat away ? I would hardly think so, not with 1.5 Billion people to feed !!!
      There is NO perfect solution, everything you use has a price, so you have to decide which is the least harmful alternative !
      PVC is made from OIL, so does that mean Leatherette is sustainable ? I don't think so, does Leatherette bio degrade ? I don't think so ! so what will happen to it when the car is finished ? thrown in the ground, to pollute the ground and possibly the water table, in other words YOUR DRINKING WATER, and at best, the chemicals will leak into the local river where it will pollute the water, and eventually make it's way to the Ocean killing fish, or the very least, these fish will ingest these minute particles, and we, the end of the food chain, consume these fish AND the ingested chemicals !!
      SUSTAINABLE ?? I THINK NOT .

      in the world of Volvo: XC is for SUVs, "Cross Country" for lifted wagons/sedans.

      The logic is a bit confusing, you are right.
      The XC cars, like the XC90 are purpose built SUV while the V40CC, the S/V60CC are based on regular cars with some small added off-road capabilities.

      I think “Cross Country” rolls off the tongue much better vs XC. I drove the T6 version of the V90 Cross Country last weekend to see if it was a proper replacement for my Saab wagon: ’07 9-5 2.3T. The V90 feels right at home on the interior. I drove it in dynamic mode & after I stepped out thinking “I wonder if they will bring the T8 to the states”.
      My 9-5 feels MUCH faster, even with a 56 horse disadvantage. The V90 is a fast car, it’s just the super charger takes out allll the drama of a turbo! :/ I just HELD the pedal to the floor on the highway & I missed the spooling of the turbo that leads to a sweet thrust. That is why I will always have a 9-5 for a weekend car. The cross country version of the V90 for deep snow will probably be my future daily driver.

      it's a little bit confusing... back to the 2000 the xc70 was called v70 XC but some years later they changed to xc70.
      anyway, for me, the v90 XC is the new XC70, but as the XC90 already exists, they've just had to use the old nomenclature

      Can't compare to old school turbos. They had way more drama. And SAAB's are widely known to kill just about anything comparable in mid-flight torque.
      My fastest driver still is a tuned 9-5 Aero from -01. That thing just hauled ass when pegging the pedal on the highway.
      Even my older 9-3 diesel slaughters my new BMW diesel on highway. SAABs were absolutely geared towards highway passing drivability.

    Extensive review 3 episode for V90 Aha.Nice Though ,I am surprised Volvo car can pack reliability of V6 engines in 4 or 5 cylinder engines .I cannot judge but is it true ?       MB Rajesh What do you mean? That a 4 cylinder engine cant be reliable? Of course they can. Volvo build all their engines here in Sweden not far from where I live. And Im driving a 4 cylinder Volvo myself...😀👍🇸🇪

Mate it's in positive sense , In Europe(Patricularly in Germany) mainly cars are driven Fast and it's always better to have 6 cylinder than 4 cylinder.In continuous usage at higher speed it put more stress and strain on 4 cylinder Engine compare to a typical 6 cylinder Engine.But contrary to my belief Volvo engine last almost as V6 or Inline 6.Amazing.

    It's animal hide, not skin, I don't understand why you think leatherette which is a plastic, is sustainable. Leather is preferred because it is comfortable, try testing a car with plastic seats in a tropical area, the heat build up is intolerable. Leather is what luxury car buyers in the US and China want, it'll be around for a while.

      Autogefühl Fabric seats are not available in any luxury brand in most markets outside Europe. PU is extremely uncomfortable in a tropical climate, your tests are done mostly in Germany, and the highest temperature I've seen on the MFD is 25°C, at 35°C with 70% humidity, can you really blame people for choosing leather over PU? Fabric isn't an option. Factory farming isn't a phenomenon in the developing world, atleast in India.
      Microfiber poisons marine life, please don't promote it. Maybe you could promote removable upholstery covers, easy to clean and cotton ones should be comfortable.

    The V90 is absolutely gorgeous but this cross country version just seems to destroy the original design. It looks awkward.

    Why stop with the use of real leather? I feel no difference in real and fake leather, but isn't it just a good thing that we use every part of the animals? We use the meat, we use the leather, we use the bones, we use the heart etc. If we were ONLY to use the meat, then all the other things would go to a waste.

    Hi Thomas. I live in the UK. I enjoy your car tests and reports BUT, please stop "banging-on" about the use of leather on car seats. We are all entitled to our own views on "green" issues. We are all also entitled to our views on the materials used. How many times in each review must you refer to leather as "animal skins"?I prefer "animal skin" for my shoes, for my trouser belt and for my car seats etc. Please respect the fact that not everyone follows your preferences.     Great car ,super quality interior,but too expensive.I would buy an Audi or Mercedes SUV for the same price level.

    You're right, Thomas . . the exterior is beautiful, but the interior looks like they handed the design of the interior over to a kindergarten class . . using finger paints.

      I agree with this, sadly. Not sure why reviewers tend to rave about the infotainment screen, the vents, the instrument panel, and the silly roller for drive modes, but they all look amateurish. Among the worst things -- and no reviewer seems to say this -- is that roller thing that is used to change the drive modes: I've used it extensively on driving perhaps a dozen 90 vehicles in the last several months, and it works horribly. The design is dreadful of that roller; one has to look down at it then up at the screen on the center console; the roller works very poorly, being hard to scroll to the mode you want, and then it frequently slips before you can click on the mode you want (or the screen goes back to the previous screen, timing out after only a few seconds, if you aren't quick enough). I wouldn't want to buy this car for this horrible feature alone! It should be on the steering wheel and you should be able to easily change drive modes looking only at the center of the instrument panel behind the steering wheel, not over at the big screen to the right. Very amateurish design, and bad for safety because it takes the driver's eyes far off the road for way too long to change modes.

    Thank you Thomas for again discussing the inexcusable continued use of animal skin upholstery. I hope that Volvo comes to their senses and offers customers a humane alternative. My own personal Opinion about the car is that it is overpriced. I agree with your opinion about the poor steering wheel design.

      i just hate leather in general cause when you take off your shirt in the summer while driving its like being glued to the car plus leather is not really classy anymore i remember my dads 1998 Volvo V70 R had super nice Alcantara diamond stitched seat with leather bulsters they need to bring those seats back

      Autogefühl Bin auch ganz eurer Meinung- was spricht eigentlich dagegen Kunstleder zu verarbeiten? Es wärmt nicht so schnell auf, hält länger und ist auch viel einfacher zu reinigen... und umwelt und va. tierfreundlicher ist es auch!

    Perhaps the rest of your review is good as well, but you are far too wordy and I simply do not have the patience to listen to this.
