I fitted a boost ring into my Defender 200tdi. It is a little bit easier than in the video. There is more space around the injection pump. No need to remove a bolt from the engine sidecover.
In my case (200tdi) there was no inner spring and only one thick shim under the pumpcover.
I secured shims and spring with a cable tie to the cover, before refitting. Then there is no danger of loosing springs and shims in the engine bay. The gap between cover and pumpcase is wide enough to remove the tie when the two bolts are secured with some turns in their threads.
Driving with boost pin and boost ring is a great improvement.
did it make it smoke more jens
Great tip on the table tie. Works well. Thanks.
Just fitted this on my 300tdi defender. Had the Morgan Hill boost pin in a couple of months and the boost screwed up to 1.4/5 bar, and they made a huge difference to power. The boost ring however doesn't appear to make much difference unless your right up the top of the revs, which, unless you have zero mechanical sympathy and like to thrash the living daylights out of your engine, is pretty pointless! Hardly worth the fiddly job of fitting it! Before anyone asks, yes I tried numerous shim combinations! Also, Fourby, supply the kit with knurled Allen bolts, would make you stand at least half a chance of getting a grip on it to start it off on the threads!
My disco 1 seems to rev up a bit quicker now. Happy with the result. Couple of things not mentioned in vid. Putting the gear back together is very tight and tricky. Also be careful that the inner spring doesn't jump out and you have to redo it all when you find it under the truck. Also make sure you replace the old O ring otherwise you will have to do the job yet again as it will leak. :(
OK... So... Boost Ring..on order,...Boost Pin...on order... I'm looking forward to a bit more grunt outta the old girl. Disco 300Tdi. I refered here by 'Chris at 'land Rover Toolbox :) Cheers for sharing. Brett, Australia.
I would advise potential purchasers to attempt to free the torx bolts before purchasing a boost ring. I followed the advice in the video but found it impossible to free the bolts with the fuel injection pump in situ, the access is very difficult, even with the bolt removed. Consequently I could not fit the boost ring.
I’m having the same problem. They act as if it can be easily done. Looking for any other tips or tricks. Maybe to heat it up? Or will melt shims?
Since the Torx bolts are replaced by hex bolts, I used a destructive method to remove them; I used a chisel and hammer to spin the bolts around. Tightening the new bolts was simple using a trimmed hex key.
@@andrewandjelicthis advice got the job done. Thanks
Don't know how this has popped up on my feed tonight,,,,but I must check if the p38 m51 pump has a ring
Looking for a tool to get the torx bolts out in that restricted space? On Amazon, I found the Laser 6744 ratchet flexi-head bit driver is perfect for this job. It's around 300mm long to give decent leverage on the threadlocked bolts.
InstaBlaster...
On a 300TDi? Its tight. Thanks
Can you heat up the screws? Can’t get the hardest accessible one out! Or is there another trick besides removing the pump? Thanks.
Hello, thanks for the video. What I'm curious about is, won't what you did damage the engine?
@Fourby How do the additional shims not negate the additional height gained by the boost ring spacer? Seems like a net zero gain.
That was exactly what I was thinking of. Looking forward to an answer.
Very good point. I think I will stick to turning the origianal pin and the normal pump mods.
What if I took out all the shims including the two that were in there before, will it make even more power
Ok. So the 300TDI has a bit over 100HP. I have a guy getting me a Boost Pin here in Brasil. From what I hear the pin will add 8-12 hp and change when the engine builds power. How much more horsepower do you guess or have tested the Boost ring mod to produce? 5? 10?
Anything?
What is this witchcraft I see'eth?
@landrover toolbox. Do you think this is a good modification?
Sounds a bit dodge
I've fitted one, and this witchcraft your seeing is called a waste of time!
Now am waiting for test drive
Hi mate would you be able to point me in the right direction for a drivers side front wing for a rover 214 . 192 plate , just thought id try you thanks in advance
So,it's ok to fit both boost pin & boost ring? so long as the pump is in the standard setting?
Does the boost ring make much difference?
Also, does the Boost ring make the combustion better? As in more efficient and getting better gas mileage?
Just received mine it has 2 rubber ring washers ? Is one a spare . Watching this you only fit 1 . Cheers
its a spare, in case original one may leak
Ok so the boost pin is fitted likewise the boost ring and and it has made a huge difference to the performance, it does however
make a screeching sound at high boost under load. Any ideas to the reason for that.?
All the videos of this conversion I've seen nobody has actually stated how much horsepower are you gain by doing this is there anybody out there savvy enough to be able to tell me as I'm very interested in this mod thanks
in my opinion, on the 200tdi the original torx head screw sets are IMPOSSIBLE to remove with a tool. use a sharp cold chisel and hammer and loosen them both. unscrew by hand after. use a cable tie to hold together the shims and spring to re fit the new ring to pump.
This got the job done. Thanks!
Hi, top vid. I have a 200tdi. would you still recommend starting with three shims? Also, have you got any data to back up the power increases? Cheers.
Every engine is different... Start conservatively and remove shims until you find the sweet spot for 'your' engine.
I'm not a mechanic. How will I know when I have reached the sweet spot?
You drive your car more than any random mechanic, you'll know...
Cool. So to be clear, less shims= more power? (obvs I don't want to blow the engine).
does too much advance give a 'backfire' situation when things boost up?
Will too much advance give a white/grey diesel smoke? thanks
This was an absolute ball ache of a job for me to do more so to get it all back in place without the shims and spring lol
A bit late to the party! Which is the better first step, using the boost pin or fitting the boost ring. 200tdi Discovery on standard settings. Ta
put both together
What difference in the engine is read by changing the fuel
What is the point with the spacer with the o-ring if ur shimming the spring up and moving the housing up with the spacer ???
the boost ring and the supplied shim stack are not the same thickness
I have one of these on the way. Any independent reviews? Fourby, do you suggest setting the injection pump to factory settings 1.54mm advance with a dial gauge? Can you explain how this is different then just advancing the pump timing gear a bit?
Facebook is full of reviews, reset your timing to stock, this ring exaggerates the built in advance mechanism inside the VE FIP
Can you link me to the reviews of this item? I don't see any on FB. Just general Fourby reviews.
What hp gains am I looking at ?
This question is for fourby!
I work at a engine management calibrators and have access to a superflow dyno , I’d love to do some back to back tests .
feel free, look at our website to purchase your Boost Ring for testing
Hi, I already have the boost pin and have just set the timing on my pump to 1.60mm. Can I still use the boost ring without going back to 1.54? Thanks
you dont want to run the timing too advanced, I personally wouldn't recommend it, it may knock at the top end as the effect of the ring is across the entire rev range, it's not something we would test... your gamble...
will it smoke more ?
No, smoke less
Does it matter if one of the small washers go in first
Mike 1960 what matters is the thickness of the shim pack
Ok just I got one of the small washers won't come out from around the piston
hello can this be used on a 300tdi with maf sensor. thanks
the maf sensor is on the edc pump. boost pin and boost ring won't be of any use to you unfortunately but if you have an edc pump is recommended that you Google "evrymod ". It is a small electrical modification using a variable resistor and an on/off switch which increases fueling . Makes a huge difference on an edc pump.
Ok thanks
I installed a boost pin and it leaks diesel
Hi Neil, can I buy a couple of fourby stickers to put on Wilf? With all the help and advice you have offered me I think it is the least I could do to help promote your company. atb Dan.
Dan Lloyd Dude, I wanna see that paint job in the flesh, drop by for coffee, I'll find you some stickers!
Fourby 100% man I have to drop Katie Mai back to billesley for her job Wednesday so if you're in I'll pop over about 19:00.
yeah should be, drop me a text/phone call first though, maybe heading out...
Okay - so where does one of the Colonials Down Under obtain said Boost Pin & Boost Ring Techno Doodads from...
And how may Oz Shekals shall be required do you know...???
Mad Dog Power Cycles lol, link at the end of the vid dude!
Will this work on a 306 d turbo?
Yes
My exact question 😂
My land rover only had one original shim in there does this make any difference?
Farmer Tom no, carry on as normal
@@Fourby I put the three shims in as suggested and it made no difference so have just took 1 shim out and will see if it's any better tomorow
@@farmertom577 Any difference?
@@zingzing5077 nope waste of money
@@farmertom577 thank you, good to know, i will just get the boost controller kit, as I have already messed with the standard pump and i am over the moon with the results. All the best
Is there a boost ring for a 2.5 n/a ?
Does it increase EGT's?
