Another great winter camp Andy. It’s been almost 30 years since my wife and I did ‘The Old Man’. Brings back some wonderful memories so thanks for that! 😊
Think I forgot to comment on your last one. You Certainly did get the stars aligned on that. Some camp that was. What a view! Awesome video as always Andy. ATVB Robert
Lovely Andy, what a sunset/fog bow & brocken spectre 👌👌 you earned em though in those temps. I’m off to bag Branstree next weekend & a few stragglers round it…have you had your wigwam on top of it by any chance?? Just wondering how the ground lies up there. Thanks for sharing bud, stay safe👍
Loved it Andy. Definitely over that last year or two with my visits back in the Old Man area I've grown to love it. Lots of potential. ... Where you stopped to talk about Low Water...or warter 😅. Two weeks before I crossed further to my camp and it was mad. Drifts to my waist, such fun. Looked absolutely gorgeous. Got a good few days free soon. Hoping that kind of conditions hang about/ come back. Fab film mate
Yeah its a great area john one ive walked many times but only just getting round to doing any camping on..having camped the old man, wetherlam & black sails i can get on some of the others next time..
Now then Andy, Riving Sheds were where the Rivers (not rivers!😂) split the clogs (large pieces of slate) down eventually into roofing slates. Once split they set about shaping them with a "whittle and brake". My great uncle was a river in the Old Man quarries, owned by Mandalls in the 1940's. My grand parents owned the paper shop in Coniston in those days, although they lived at Oxenfell on the road to Skelwith. Dad remembers the slate being brought down on 4x4 ex WW2 army wagons with an extra gearbox grafted into the drivetrain to get really low gears to slow them down on the descent... they had rubbish brakes!! If you're interested in the slate quarries in the Coniston area try and get hold of the book "Slate from Coniston" by Alistair Cameron... I don't think it's in print anymore. He's a local lad like mi sel! Enjoyed the video, ATB Alistair 👍
Nice one Alistair i thought you may know something about it..fascinating stuff isnt it & i did do some research when home & watched a few videos of splitting thats a great skill doing that..must be great having you're family with all that history & knowledge thanks for the comment mate..
Love it around there like you said it’s just got so much history. I’ve camped all over the Coniston fells but never on the old man summit, because it’s always to busy nice you got the place pretty much to yourself Andy. Bent a couple of MSR groundhogs the other week in the deep snow, so would be interesting to see how you get on with the Alpkit ones? Atb Karl 👍😎
Cheers Karl ayy the old man is one ive wanted to camp on a long time..itsxan area ive walked many times the coniston range but only just getting round to doing any camping round there.. Used the alpkit tierods a few times now & i can say they're brilliant..where its a bit stoney & the eastons wont go in easily enough these things just go in so much better..
@ thanks for the update Andy appreciated mate. 👍 With regards to Coniston fells can recommend Black Sails if you’ve not camped on it? everyone seems to bypass it because it’s not a wainwright so really quiet and there’s some lovely flat spots near the top with great views. ATB karl
@TheSummitexplorer69 ive camped black sails mate ayy & wetherlam now..i know the spot on black sails just off the top lovely spot & the views are underestimated on there aren't they..
Riving is where the slate was split. Here’s an explanation I got off Google. Terminology: "Riving" is the term used specifically for splitting slate, and a "riven slate" is a finished slate that has been split using this method.
Its the g7x mkiii tony...very capable little camera fully manual settings too for different uses..much prefer this now over lugging the dslr's about like i used to.

Great video Andy . Love your work matey 👍
Super again ❤
Used to work for an American company , the guys would watch your videos and not understand a lot of what was said , made me laugh ;)
I do get a lot of that with American viewers saying they can hardly understand my accent but enjoy watching..i do chuckle sometimes 😆
Cracker of a watch this mate, really enjoyed it and that windchill looked CHILLY. Looking forward to the next one. ATB.

Andy can we get the Atom Pack discount retrospectively?

Terminology:
"Riving" is the term used specifically for splitting slate, and a "riven slate" is a finished slate that has been split using this method.
Yeah i did some research when home & watched a few videos on splitting what a skill that is..
Chris uses a lightweight Camp Ice Axe to carry in those conditions where ok but hopefully not to need 😅 plus spikes
I go by an old analogy tony "better to have and not need than to need & not have"
@@AndrewBeavers exactly
Watching this at Fairbrook Naise ...its Wartoh in Manchester...you lot on the other side of the Pennines say it wrong 😉
😆😆 its cold & wet Olan thats all that matters 😆😆
Down bottoms!? Ah tha sure tha from Barnsley. Tha'll be telling us tha puts a coat on for a night out round tarn next 😃 Great video as usual.
Im knocking on now im not a young un anymore...of course i wear a coyt round tarn 😆
What tent is that? Great video
Big sky international chinook 1p..
In Cumbrian slang water is also pronounced watta.
you must have ben asked this a thousand times but i just cant find it, but whats the tent please Andy. Cheers
Big sky international chinook 1p...
Do you think is that Chinnook better that the xdome for those conditions? Great video btw!
I do yes as the chinook is a dedicated 4 season tent & has the features more suited to that..
Do you own any product's from fjallraven ?
Great video
I dont no...just my opinion but its too heavy & notcreally suited to our climate..
What a great night you hade. What tent did you use? //Elisabeth - Naturliv i Norr
Looks like a Big Sky Chinook 1P. If you don't mind the 700gr extra get a Unna instead. Mine has been brilliant for >15yrs now.
Big sky international chinook 1p
👋🏼
What Rab down jacket is that Andy?
The mythic ultra..
What size Rab Mythic Ultra are you wearing?
Its the large..im a large in most coats etc.
Which canon do you use? Looks a cosy camp
Its the g7x mkiii tony...very capable little camera fully manual settings too for different uses..much prefer this now over lugging the dslr's about like i used to.
@AndrewBeavers yeah the DSR isn't a portable thing for wild camping. I just use action cam for weight saving lol
Bye ek lad you can talk propper! 😁
Which tent is that mate?
It’s a big sky Chinook. It’s listed in Andy’s description
no its not 😂
The big sky international chinook 1p..
Its listed in my bio part gear i use 😉
Hey Andy, have you got a drone?
I do the dji mavic air but haven't used it in a long time..
