- Solo winter wild camping in the Lake District mountains.
Heading out from Wasdale for a night of camping in the snow under the shadow of England’s highest mountains; Scafell Pike and Scafell. I spent the night in my Hilleberg Soulo before returning to Wasdale the morning after.
Many thanks for watching - Dave

Stunning drone footage 🙌🏼 love your videos …. Keep them coming.
Big thanks Sarah. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
This account should have over 100k subscribers definitely
Thanks Scott 👍
Stunning video! That drone footage... Many thanks!
@@christinejones2205 big thanks Christine 🙏🏻
Great video. Like someone said 'old school solo summiter " back out alone , just you the tent and the mountain. Superb drone shots. Really enjoyable. Well done Dave , keep up the great work 👍
Much appreciated as always Steve. ATB 👍
I’ve been overdosing on videos like this for weeks; it helps keep my head in a good place to see this stuff during the dark months of the year. Anyway, this video is probably one of the best I’ve seen. I felt like I was right there with you. I’m gonna get in shape and meet you up one of those mountains for real some day… thanks for doing this sort of content and thanks for not trying to sell us things as you do so (a lot of the videos in this category feel like sales videos).
Really appreciate your kind comments there. I bumped into quite a few people on my outings. Would be great to meet you sometime. Take care and very best wishes.🙏🏻
I get it m8..... Another belter trip...😂😂❤🙏🥊
Nice one Robert 😎👍
Really enjoyed this. Cheers Dave -
🙏🏻
Morning Dave, absolutely epic mate, what a camp spot, just amazing being in an amongst all those crags. Brilliant mate, thanks for taking us along for the adventure.
Cheers
Much appreciated, Dave. Glad you enjoyed it.👍
Wow, mucky tent pegs and a hillside rave. What a camp spot. Last time I was up there was too busy breathing to look for a pitch. Really enjoying your epic trips. Cheers.
Haha. Cheers Daz. Aye. It’s a bit of a slog up there with that pack. Glad you enjoyed it 👍
Stunning spot Dave another great camp 👌👍👍
Atb Graham
Cheers Graham 👍
Yes weather in London is very changeable. Ohh lucky you in Lake district, I wouldn't mind that weather... Even back home in Latvia there was no snow in end of January, wasted 3 days A/L. better would go some nice UK camping. thanks for video, epic as always!
@@kristaps2010 big thanks Kris. Glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏻
Brilliant video, Dave, as always. And I agree entirely about spending time in places and feeling more of a connection and allowing you to slow down and really look and experience where you're spending a long period of time. Nicely put, Dave
Much appreciated as always, Irene. Glad you enjoyed it.ATB 🙏🏻
@ I forgot to say I agree also about you don’t always have to choose a summit camp. Unless it’s somewhere like Catstyecam! But the lower slopes, particularly the corries are incredible. Hollow Stones has got to be up there with the best though, just a rock amphitheatre!
@ absolutely, Irene. The Amphitheatre of the Gods 🙏🏻
Love it! Spectacular views and I love a bit of snow! You’re an inspiration Dave! Keep it up ❤ x
Big thanks 🙏🏻
Love your work Dave. Thanks for what you bring to the UA-cam community. Always a personal highlight when I see a notification saying that you've posted. All the best, Jem
@@jemjones563 really appreciate your kind words Jem. Very best wishes 🙏🏻
@TheSoloSummiteer you're very welcome! Would you ever consider moving to the lakes? I sense you're not overly local either - think it t took you a fair few hours to get up there!
@ I’m only 2hrs away from most of the Lake District. It’s very expensive to buy a house there so don’t think it will ever happen to be honest. ATB
Magical mate, I get it ..
🙏🏻
Good to see you doing some "proper cooking" at last. 😊😊. Stunning camp, the fells at their very moody best. Not jealous, not a bit, honest. ATB,
Haha. Nice one Rogar. ATB 😁👍
Watched this at work days ago and forgot to reply. That was an epic spot. The drone footage really highlighted just how remote it looked. ATVB Robert
Cheers Robert🙏🏻. Yeah, although not remote, in those conditions it has a very isolated feel to the place. I love it there. Thanks for watching. ATB 👍
@ yeah can imagine on summer conditions that being a busy route
Thank you
🙏🏻
Great video this credit to ya some cracking views all the best
Big thanks Mark👍
@TheSoloSummiteer been watching a few of yours amzing going up the lakes soon me and me dog cracking pictures views credit to ya pal

Another great adventure Dave in such an amazing area. Thanks for this. Simon
Nice one Simon. Big thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it 😎👍
What a brilliant camp! Loved every moment of it. In my opinion, your best yet, thank you mate.
Wow, Paul. Really appreciate that. Big thanks 🙏🏻
Incredible atmosphere and vista, I am currently fighting cancer and aim to be back gaining fitness autumn. Your video's inspire and emphasise the simple aspects to absorb nature raw. I will follow your footsteps 🏕😎👍
Wow Peter. So sorry to hear that. Really appreciate your comments. Look after yourself and lm looking forward to hearing about you getting back out there later this year. Take care bud and very best wishes 🙏🏻
That’s a heavy pack mate, but totally understandable. That face when you see Mickledore. I get it - I feel it through the TV! You need to change your name - one man, a tent, and a cup of soup 😂 love it all mate 🏔️
Awesome pal 🙏🏻
Hi silver fox.. Your looking good fella...another enjoyable camping vid..luv the way you explain everything you do and your equipment...very knowledgeable about your surroundings...always good to watch...lovely scenery as always...Plus yourself what more could we ask...😊
Ha ha. Thanks for watching. I’m glad you enjoyed it.😁👍
Dave, that was such a WOW! camp. Absolutely spectacular! I really wish more people were subscribed & enjoying your incredible videos. I’m constantly telling people about your channel, I wish they’d all subscribe and help get you the recognition you so deserve 😊
Much appreciated. Thank you. 🙏🏻 As I’ve said before, it’s the younger, fitter and better looking UA-camrs that get all the views and subscribers. And, I don’t have a beard 🧔♂️ 🤦🏻♂️😁👍.
Great Video that view when you made your morning coffee 👌👍🏻
Nice one Dave 😎👍
Nice one Dave. 👍 Not sure summit camps are overrated. BUT places like that are definitely Underrated like you said, you get time to appreciate the details 😊.that place Looked great. I've camped IN snow lots of times, but still not when it's snowed overnight...... fingers crossed 🤞....need more to come!. Great moody camp 👌
That’s a good point John. Still love my summit camps but it’s nice to mix it up sometimes. I’m sure we’ll get some more snow before April. Certainly hope so. All the best, pal.
Brilliant as always dave . Looked surreal. Awsome job. But woooooo slow down on cooking hahaha. Great to speak to ya over weekend pal. Top mush
Cheers Craig👍. Hope the weekend wasn’t too traumatic 😬😂
@TheSoloSummiteer no comment lol. No had a great weekend catch up with ya both soon . I promised I cook ya both somet. Lol ooo dear what have I let myself in for lol
@ 🤦🏻♂️😂👍
Cracking camp Dave! Loved that one! Solid layering advice swiftly followed by “can’t be bothered taking the rucksack off!” Best bit and totally agree! 😂
🤣😁👍
Dave, “I’m gonna do some proper cooking”. Mate you’re having a giraffe! This is never gonna happen. 🤣🤣🤣we know you too well bud. Great video. Fab opening drone shots. Atb
😂👍
Fantastic camp Dave! Absolutely beautiful.. I know what you mean by the mountain vibe..It's really special. I love it. As you said, you either get it or you don't. As usual, great photography and I always really really love your choice of music. Thanks for taking us along with you..Looking forward to your next adventure! 😊x
Big thanks Antonia. Glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏻
Dave...you were in your element with this camp...and so was I just watching👍. A few years back, my brother and my sons were here in early spring with the intention of doing "The Rake". But filled with 3ft of snow it was off. I love this little area...as you say "what a place". Great Dave - Thanks for another brilliant watch🏞️😊
Wow, yeah, I know what you mean. The
crags around here could hold a lot of snow in winter. Glad you enjoyed the video though. Big thanks for watching.
Superb, love Mickledore, real mountain territory right there!
Absolutely Tony 🏔️😎🙏🏻
Loved the video dave and the snow too, great soundtrack you use aswell just makes it complete for me see you next time.
Much appreciated Ian 🙏🏻
Dave that was pure gold, loved it.
Much appreciated Paul 🙏🏻
Nice one epic spot 👍 ye your definitely onto something with that. My favorite spots are with height but surrounded with bigger peaks around you. Makes you feel right in it. In fact it's inspired me to search out something similar for a camp on Wednesday hopefully 👍
Oh nice one, Stephen. Sounds good. Have fun.Atb 👍
What a beautiful presentation! This looks and sounds phenomenal!
Thank you 🙏🏻
That was awesome Dave.. magical.. ATB man TC 🙏🏴🇨🇦
Big thanks Kenny 🙏🏻
This time for full domestic emersion I'm sat by an open window with a handful of frost fresh from my car windscreen, thrown in my face. Pausing to eat a salmon and cream cheese sandwich whilst keeping a close eye on your video. I am getting that mountain vibe, in fact I first had that experience aged 10, 63 years ago at the head of Wast Water fascinated by the crystal clear water of Lingmell beck and then later as a teenager exploring a hanging valley near Borrowdale. Sheer magic, never to be forgotten and somewhat rekindled in your video. I've just got time to smear some butter on the soles of my slippers and slither into the kitchen to create the 'brew with a view' trying not to get into a sweat.
😂. Another classic John. You’re a gem 💎. Very best wishes 🥶 🥪 🫖😁👍
Looks lovely. My kinda fun. Be well.
Cheers 🙏🏻
We've walked up here lots of times but can't imagine how hard it is to camp up there in winter. It just looks so hard. Fabulous xx
It’s certainly a slog with that rucksack. Big thanks for watching guys. Glad you enjoyed it. Take care 🙏🏻
Fabulous as always!!!
Thank you 🙏🏻
Nice one Dave. Yeah, I get it, looked better in the mountains rather than on the summit. The Hilleberg looked great amongst the back drop there too. Good to see a Utube wlildcamper wearing boots at last. There seems to be so many wearing trainers these days! I realise they're not trainers for the high street, but they're still trainers aren't they? Boots all day long for me mate, even in summer. After 35 yesrs walking in the mountains, I have a pair for each season. Well done Dave, and keep 'em coming. Cheers,Ozzy.
Nice one, Ozzy. Much appreciated. Yeah, I’m the same as you with the boots. People keep telling me about trail running shoes but boots have done me fine for years so I’m happy to stick with them. ATB 👍
Awesome. What a place. You find some amazing places to explore. Really enjoyed watching this.
Big thanks for watching Isobel 🙏🏻
It’s like looking up at the Himalaya,s , stunning mate and very inspiring 👍
I know bud. Another world. ATB 👍
Like you say Dave if you get it you get it, I get it pal you nutter 🤣🤣🤣 love it mate 👍
Thanks pal 😁👍
Thanks Dave, another great video. I knew I had this one to watch so when I woke up in the middle of the night (3am) what better way to pass the time so here I am commenting in the early hours of the morning on your video......cheers
Wow Aileen. You’re keen 👍. Thank you. Glad you enjoyed. ATB
Another great video Dave - I especially liked the drone footage of that special place. We used to camp up there at weekends (not in winter!!!) to climb on Scafell Crag and Pikes Crag - saved walking up and down to the valley. Way back then the path up Brown Tongue was very different - an erosion scar up the ridge to the left of the current track. Fix the Fells have done a great job improving it - mind it’s still a slog up and isn’t great descending when wet or snowed up. Keep the great work up. Thanks.
Nice one Graham. Sounds like you have a lot of experience around there 👍. Yeah, I’ve never done the route up from Wasdale without a camping rucksack. It’s tough either up or down especially in winter, despite the great work done to the path. Big thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed it. ATB 👍
I’m impressed with the cooking Dave, there really is no end to your talents!!😂 what’s going to be next ‘homemade’ sandwiches??
🤣😁👍
Really enjoyed that, you are right about camping within the fold of the mountain especially for shelter. I could tell you enjoyed it because of the numbers of ‘look at that’ lol
😂👍. Cheers Philip 😁
somethings lift my mood. when you upload a video is one of them. hope your injury is healing.
Big thanks Gary. Very best wishes 🙏🏻
Great vid Dave 👍👍👏👏👏
🙏🏻
Great video, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Thank you!
Much appreciated Liz 😎👍
Another great video Dave keep them coming! Looks like an amazing pitch there!
Thanks James. It’s a special place 🏔️🙏🏻
Nice vid Dave.. what a backdrop to have for a pitch. The lakes is stunning with its winter jacket on, hoping we’ll get another arctic blast before the years out. Atb mate 👍🏼
Cheers👍. Yeah there still chance of snow until early April 🤞
Wow. Just amazing ! The views🎉❤
🙏🏻
Great video as usual thanks mate
Glad you enjoyed it 😎👍
Brilliant pitch Dave I certainly know what you mean about pitching in rather than on, plus you generally are closer to a water source. The red tent looks really good in the snow, excellent drone footage shows the pitch in context. I'm always surprised that these places can funnel the wind. Theres a place I go quite regularly that you would think is sheltered but it always appears quite gusty even on the stills days. Thanks for sharing your adventures ❤ .
Yeah, that wind definitely has a mind of its own 🤦🏻♂️😄👍. ATB
Lovely video. i remember camping above Patterdale in my Blacks mountain tent and hearing the wind rushing down - nothing better (provided you are in a decent tent!)
Yeah, fantastic experience. Thanks for watching 🙏🏻
First time I've seen your video. Summit camping? There seems to be a trend to do this which I think is needlessly risky and appears to be people seeking to test equipment to destruction. Your location was superb, remote and beautiful but sensible. Lots of really good points well made: going properly equipped; layering etc. The drone shots added a touch of the spectacular. I've had a really enjoyable half hour or so. Thanks.
Yes I understand Stephen. I’ve done a lot of summit camping myself and really enjoy it. I’m a fair weather camper though and aim to avoid bad weather wherever possible. Unfortunately, sometimes you get can caught out in it. It’s very popular on UA-cam as people like to watch it, but I’d rather have beautiful views and be able to sit out and enjoy nature. Big thanks for watching and for your comments. Glad you enjoyed it. ATB 👍
Superb dave.such a special spot.thanks mate.
Glad you enjoyed it David 👍
Ace or what.
Nice one Lee 😎👍
@ class mate, thank you.🙏
Great camp and fantastic video! It looks like you pitched at the base of Mickledore, just below Lord’s Rake-what an incredible spot! I spent Friday night over on Lingmell, with a clear view of your campsite. We didn’t have quite as much snow, as we’d dropped down earlier from the top. Originally, we planned to camp on the Scafell plateau near Symonds Knott, but Lord’s Rake was completely impassable, and we didn’t fancy descending only to find Foxes Gully was a no-go as well. Looks like you had an unforgettable night up there!
Wow. I think you did the right thing. It’s a slog from Lingmell to Scafel. And then to have to turn back because of snow. No thanks. Yeah, it was amazing to spend the night up there. Really special 🙏🏻
Great way to end the week; watching your vid Dave. 5 in Jan is immense!👍🏼 Sundays wouldn’t be the same. I’m hoping to get time off week after next to get up there. I’m a halfway up camper lol. Can count on one hand the amount of summits I’ve camped on 😅 top tip for stakes/pegs: I bought some generic nails Stripey fella recommended off of Amazon and they’re amazing Dave. The places I camp regularly are flinty limestone-y and these are great. They’re like a steely-alloy nail. Check em out. Not as light as Easton 9’s but more assured and do t bend. Not knocking Easton’s but these are another level.
Hey nice one, Jack. Thanks for the info on the pegs. I’ll have a look at them.ATB 👍
Dave this is some old school solo Summiteer video style unbelievable drone shot at the start to get the Audience thinking we’re on the planet is he that followed by some down to earth walking talking camping with a 20kg backpack hat goes of to you
Nice one Trev. Much appreciated 🙏🏻
Great video Dave..I was in Cornwall last week, somebody is stealing your phrase..I was in a church and a sign said BREW WITH A PEW ! Yep, an actually coffee bar in a real church ! Thought of u Dave immediately M ☘️
🤣. Brilliant. ATB pal 🙏🏻
Another great watch thanks
Cheers J 👍
It was good meeting you at Burton in Kendal Services Dave, we were a bit star struck🤩 Glad you had a good camp, looks stunning! Stay safe and keep them coming. Sue & Steve
Thanks for saying hello. Was a pleasure to meet you guys, too. Hope you had a great day. ATB 👍
Nice to be high up but still have stuff above you❤
I was there yesterday, was a fantastic day out
Oh, that’s awesome 🏔️👍
Awesome little adventure Dave. I get it mate 👍
👍🙏🏻
Well done - too snowy for me to camp. I did notice that you had big boots on (as I do on similar days). I am amazed how many people just wear trainers, maybe big trainer, but still trainers. Must be lethal on these snowy paths down. Thanks for sharing. Geoff
Absolutely Geoff. Can’t mess around in those conditions 👍
Over the last few years I've appreciated the slightly lower camps like you say you see the mountain for what it is
Sure do, Craig 🏔️👍
I get it! Great vid. Thank you…😀👍
Absolutely 🙏🏻
What a place! Sleeping amongst the giants.
Absolutely 🙏🏻
Great camping Dave, sometimes it’s better to see the summit then be on it.
Yeah 🏔️⛺️👍
Looks Stunning 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
Great location, brilliant video mate 👍
Much appreciated Darren 👍
Nice one Dave (the rave) some jazzy music in this one. Nice drone shots as usual. Making the most of the winter conditions. Don’t blame you. ATB. Craig
Cheers pal. Yeah, got a new track for this one 🎶 👌🏻😎👍. ATB
@ 🤣
So you were camped on 'The Throne Of The Gods'? Awesome scenes, Dave. One of your best! Thanks for uploading. 🏔👍
No, Nick. That’s on the other side of Mickledore, above Great Moss. This side, where I was, is “The Amphitheatre of the Gods” 🙏🏻
Thank you for the huge amounts of time, effort and creativity in making this superb video Dave.
Do you take a small mallet to hit your tent pegs in or do you just give them the boot?🥾
Plenty of small rocks up there…🪨
Really appreciate that Peter. No. Never needed a hammer. Boot or rocks has been enough. Hammer is even more weight I don’t want to carry 🥵. ATB
@TheSoloSummiteer Thanks for that Dave. 😊
Nice pitch Dave; truly atmospheric.
🙏🏻
Hi Dave, great video, hope you went and had a pint in the Wasdale head inn!
Unfortunately I didn’t Alex. Stopped for lunch at the Watermill 👍
@ Haha, last time I was up there, had some very nice food, a couple of pints of Wasdale and a bed for the night!! So no sleeping in the back of a car🥱
Mountains look great with the snow on them,up in fort william at the moment and they are the same up here, you did well in that terrain but worth it for the solitude
Cheers Harry. Enjoy the Highlands 🏴 😎👍
What height did the snow begin at Dave? Thanks as always for a superb vlog and a virtual trip to the fells.
Cheers Kelvin. It started just below 2000ft. Atb
Awesome spot mate.
Big thanks Darren 🙏🏻
👋🏼
🙏🏻
class Dave ..u hit the nail on the head by saying when your on the summit you dont really get to see the mountain ..iv got a trip.planned for next week in Coire Leis ...btw was that a sqweeky bag I heard at the start of the video 🤔...great video m8 ..loved it 👌
Hey Brian, nice one. Where is Coire Leis?To be honest I never noticed the squeaky bag but osprey bags are quite known for it. Thanks for watching. ATB
coire leis is above the CIC hut on the North Face of Nevis ..
@BrianWelshPhotography oh that’s awesome Brain. Just found it on the map. Have a great trip and be safe. Best wishes 🙏🏻
Stay safe fella, if you don’t know already that’s an avalanche prone area…. 🥶
@warrenstanford7240 cheers m8 ..all good in that aspect 👌
Loved this. That location is so atmospheric. I tried a winter walk up Lords Rake a few years back but had to bail due to same soft wet snow conditions. BTW what boots you wearing? Scarpa Charmoz?
@@chrispm63 yeah Chris, LR does tent to hold the snow. Yeah, Charmoz boots 🥾 😎👍
Very atmospheric Dave 👍
🙏🏻
Fabulous trip report Dave. You certainly found a lovely spot to camp. What walking boots are you using they look nice.
Much appreciated as always, Philip🙏🏻. Boots are Scarpa Charmoz 👍
@TheSoloSummiteer Thanks Dave👍🏻
Smoked salmon and cream cheese........Fancy pants 🤣🤣🤣
👌🏻🥪😂👍
👍
I get it
🙏🏻
Hi dave, when was this recorded? Is there still snow on the larger wainwrights helvellyn etc?
Last week. I think there’s still some on Helvellyn despite the recent rise in temperatures
Proper cooking 😂😂 proper warming up of soup. 😂😂
🍜🔥 😂👍
Summit camping is fine but sometimes just below in a sheltered spot is cracking too.
Being on the snow line adds another level of juxtaposition .
Absolutely Keith 🥶🏔️😎👍
Dave, any flat spots without the snow amongst those rocks?
There are a few small spots, yes, Anthony. Not the best tho so you can’t be fussy 😁👍
Heh Dave!
Great vid. I was trying to message you on Instagram but won’t allow. Anyhow, I’m reallly loving the atmospheric shots with the drone. Safe to say, I’m in the market. Which one do you use and does work autonomously - for example, you set a scene or pref shot and gets on with it?
Cheers pal
What better way to spend a Sunday evening. Big Telly did this justice.
Your face just gives you away Dave, when you are in areas you have grown to love and respect.
Your films in and around Mickeldore over the years are some of your best.
You described it as "another world" and then captured it to prove it.
Said it before, I'm not going to get to these places you are showing us,
so can't thank you enough for sharing..brilliant from start to finish.👍
Nice one Mark. Don’t know why you couldn’t message me on Instagram? That’s odd. The drone I use is a DJI mini 3 pro. It does have some basic automatic features but most of my flights are done manually. ATB 👍
🙏🏻
@TheSoloSummiteerI think your settings are you need to follow to accept messages. Which is sensible considering.
Thanks very much for this. I’m dabbling with idea, like you, I love the mountain vistas. I’ve used action cams and even the hover air. But I found the latter less than useful in any wind at all and it was missing a little bit of customisation.
There are plenty of videos on drones, alas, very few on mountain action and in use situations real world.
The aerial footage really does add so much to your videos. And I bet you love looking back at the details. It’s so interesting.
Cheers pal
Dave what boots are you sporting?
Scarpa Charmoz, Peter 👍
