    Thinking of entering the world of CNC. Looking at future upgrades after learning for operate CNCs. Just retired and getting my woodshop up and running. My wife is a crafter and the CNC will help me help her. This video will help me when I will need to upgrade to a more powerful spindle. Thanks for the circuit diagram. I liked the video but did confuse the power supply with the 100v one by watching the video only. I luckily happen to be on my computer rather than the tv and looked at the comments. Please try to add your advice to the video. i wondered why you were "brave" enough to touch a non-earthed mains casing whilst the power supply was on. Similarly it is easy to miss that it is a 48v spindle.

      1/4 watt is fine. The actual power dissipated in the resistor is about .025 watts. So use any size that is physically convenient to work with. Also try this video I just made ua-cam.com/video/svj7zPuYvos/v-deo.html This video shows some wiring diagrams.

    Hey, thank you kindly for this video. Saved me some headache as I had bought a similar setup (brushless 500w), with the same power supply, and was wondering how to wire it to my GRBL
    -- I notice you don't have Ground connected in the video, but you do in the diagram. I assume using the GND is a good idea, so long as the GRBL board and the 500W power supply share the same ground at the wall.
    I get a bit nervous when dealing with mains, but I guess if something starts to smoke, I did something wrong.

    Have a question, where I live all the electronics stores have went out of business so I'm at a loss where to get some parts as well don't know what to call them. First you made a new 3-wire plug for the connector on the power supply, what is it called and where can I order it. Second, You added the 100k resistor and plug it into the 5v that was on the mother board, what is the connector called. Third, I have the original wire that connected to the spindle motor but it's too short, can I use the Anderson connector to lengthen the wire or should I get a new one, what's it called. Know this must sound crazy but because of Corvid everything closed up. Your help is apricated.

Assuming i could take another DC 24v 5a Power Through Jack , can i keep the 48v10a PSU at the board ? Or It MUST be Wired separetadly ? A board can get Burnt with this both PSU adding voltage? can i minimize RISKS by lowering down main PSU voltage for 24V20a and plug another 24v5a Through Jack ??

However if I run the spindle at max, the output voltage reads 52, not just 50.7 as in your case. Maybe I am missunderstanding something fundamentally but since the PSU is for max 48 and so is the spindle, is that an issue?

    I suppose it was a mistake to buy the 500w spindle with the operating voltage of 100VDC. It comes with one of those cheap p/s with an output voltage of 0-100VDC. I can't find anything on Amazon with 100VDC output. Will the p/s your using work with my motor with only a 48VDC output? I'm guessing no. But, I don't know. (Motor has operating voltage of 100VDC at 4A. Input AC110V +/- 10%50/60hz.) If anyone can clue me in, I'd be grateful. I've got everything in the video but the better power supply. Hope I don't have to buy another spindle motor. :/

    I have one as well and it doesn't make sense out how is the spindle 500w when the power supply is only able to deliver 480w including feeding the machine stepper drivers and board.

    • @lanierje
      @lanierje  2 роки тому +1

      It isn't powering the steppers or anything else. It only powers the stepper motor. Also, the motor is rated for 500w but it would only approach that under heavy loading if at all. The motor uses a tiny fraction of that power under light loads. The 10A supply is plenty big for this.

    • @lanierje
      @lanierje  2 роки тому

      I am using the PWM spindle output to switch the triac SSR gate. Triac SSRs are really cheap and work well for switching AC. Very simple.

    • @lanierje
      @lanierje  2 роки тому

      @@nicholaswouters1203 You need to filter it in some cases if the gate capacitance isn't high enough. A .5uf across the gate is plenty. An RC filter would be slightly better as is in my diagram. Also, PWM amplitude is constant, only duty cycle changes. It is conceivable that a rectifier to the gate would also work well. The triac switching would still occur even at very low duty cycles. Thanks for watching.

    48v × 10amps = 480w so thays fine...
    What about using 80v ×6amps = 480w
    Whats the difference in preformance.. You're still 20watts under its rated and 20watts under the OEM power supply.
    I assume with 48v and more amps it runs slower than 12k rpm but has a higher torque
    The OEM is 0-100v at 5amps.
    Voltage is usually attributed to speed and amps is torque 🙃
    It would be cool to get you to do an experiment with the different supplies to see what the difference in preformance really is.
    I'd like to see the rpm of your spindle tbh.
    Also why did you jump 100k ohm resistor to the 50v output ?? Like thays doenst make sense. You're pulling up to 50v through 100k resistor.... what in the hell ?
