I appreciate your lighting, angles, music/sound editing, narration, humor. I got a 2000 Saturn SW2. Gotta get the driver's side replaced today. I love these S-series cars, this is my second one. The 1992 SC got over 300k miles before rust got the subframe.
Thanks for watching. I really like the Saturn's also 👍
Just watched your video as a former Saturn trained mechanic worked in the dealership for a little over 15 years. The reason that trailing arm failed was due to stress. Where it snapped a pot hole will make that break. The amount of rust under your car you live in a rust belt, out of all the years I worked for Saturn and even now I have owned my own Saturn repair shop since 2010 I've only seen 2 of those break one was due to a guy sliding into a curb in the winter and yours. I also noticed that nail in your rear tire also. Great video but do not over torque Saturn bolts that just adds more stress to the part always tighten to OEM factory specs.
Had two go one 2 yrs ago. One 3 days ago. But i do have 252,336 miles on it.
I used a sawzall to cut the bolt
Good to know ur in the Texas area is ur Saturn shop still up and running? I’m ur neighbor if ur in Fort Worth I have a slightly POS Saturn that I love and would really like to get it the TLC it deserve for being such a good “cheap car” I got for 410$
I love how you put the torque specs on the video! Great idea and I wish all car repair videos did that. It makes the video an even more valuable reference. This looks super simple (minus the rust). And I'll be fixing mine here soon. Thanks for the video.
You're welcome. Thanks for watching
Good monotone narrative and calming tunes for difficult mechanicals!
Thank you
Very helpful video, thanks!
I have some personal experience points to add.
Point #1
Rockauto delivered my trailing arm part for 2001 SW2 via Fedex from Bronx, NY to Boston area in 2 days, $62.78 total. That's some serious service!
Point #2
My original trailing arm piece snapped off, just like the video, on the front of the forward knuckle washer. And yeah, the back nut would not come off, it would just spin the remaining bit that is trapped in the knuckle. I tried an alternative "pry" method as depicted in the video, using a pry bar instead of the pickle fork. Didn't work for me.
So I attacked the stubborn piece from below with a sawzall, probably the wrong blade, it was a wrecking blade that I had available which is a bimetal thing. Used up 2 of those. I think that if I had an actual 18pt hacksaw blade for the sawzall, then I might have glided right through the shaft of that thing. In my case, I melted a lot of rubber bushing...fumes...and kept rotating the shaft with a wrench on the rear nut. Definitely cut into the shaft. But after coming up short, I decided to rip out the rubber bushings and succeeded using a screwdriver and a sharp knife. I needed to see what was happening under there.
Ah-HAH. A stupid steel shaft, almost cut through, and very visible and vulnerable once I took out the rubber bushings.
I managed to trap the free swinging shaft after various attempts with C-clamps and finally, a visegrip.
Once the thing was secured, I used a simple hacksaw to complete the cut-through, took about 15 seconds.
My advice: strip out the rubber bushings, trap the free shaft somehow, and just cut the dang thing with a hacksaw.
Point #3
I also had some trouble installing the new shaft, it's just a little short and the rear bushing/washer/nut won't thread on easily. You have to move the whole knuckle/lateral link forward somehow, to gain enough length on the new trailing arm shaft for the rear bushing/washer/nut. I found that this was difficult using body/arm pressure. Tried a C-clamp...forget it.
I finally succeeded by using a ratchet strap looped over the rear lateral link and forward around, gulp, the jack stand supporting the car just forward of the connection bolts of the trailing arm. I made sure that MY body parts were clear out from under the car while I carefully ratcheted things forward to create room on the back end of the new trailing arm for the bushing/washer/nut.
It worked for me.
Thank you for the video. My 2002 SL with about 176K miles failed just this one did. As I am in Michigan, the is present on mine too. Although it should be a simple job, it is always nice to see someone else doing it before to know what to expect and to see if there are any unexpected "little surprises" to be anticiapted. Appreciate the clear and informative narration. The low volume background music is pleasant and calming. And including the torque specs is a very nice and helpful touch. Well done.
Thank you for the comment.glad I was able to help you. You're absolutely correct about those random surprises that pop up even on simple jobs.good luck on your repair
Thanks for the video. I just replaced both rear trailing arms on my 2000 SL2. Easy peazy is the best way to describe how it went. My passenger side one broke but I replaced them both right away. I'm sure they were the original ones as I have owned this car for 18 plus years now. All bolts and nuts broke loose easily. And I live in the upper Midwest in snow and salt country. Even the one that broke, the end with the rubber bushings was so stuck in the hole that it held firm. I could remove the nut no problem. I did soak the nuts with WD40 several times the day before. Backed it up on ramps, made it easy work. Bought my arms from RockAuto. Took 4 days to receive them.
Thanks for the video. Have a 2002 SL2 this happened on drivers side. Mine broke while backing up and hit curb at, literally 1 MPH, clunk / damn. And thanks for torque specs. Your videos ROCK.
Thank you for the comment 👍
I’m so glad I seen this video. The same exact thing happened to my car and I have to replace it by the end of the month before I have to get it inspected and now I know exactly what tools I’m going to need
Good luck with the repair 👍
Just broke my first one. 99 sl 1, 240k miles. Broke off exactly where yours did. I think I will do them both.
Thanks for the video!
I know this is an older video but I have a 2000 sl base that did the exact same thing, front sway bar then passenger trailing arm. But considering the car is 22 years old at this point and the previous owner didn't change anything, I think it lasted pretty well
Yeah you can't really blame it for failing
Thank you, sir. This just happened on my 02 SL1. Thanks also for putting the torque specs for quick reference. 👍
This just happened to my 2000 sw2 wagon!Rust and Wisconsin winter brings out car issues every year but I'm glad this is a fairly simple fix, specs on screen are so nice. The last thing you wanna be doing in the cold is fumbling around for the right size wrenches 🤘
My driver's side one broke. Being I'm poor. I welded mine back together. That was 3 years ago. It's still working today
Eventually the driver side also broke on this car. If it's holding that's good enough👍
somehow watching this video was soothing like minecraft. Props with the background music and pop noises at scene changes
I have a 2001 Saturn SL2 and I’m doing this project this week. My left rear snapped.
Good luck on your repair 👍
I just discovered this on my 2002 SL1. Broken in the exact same place. Awesome video! Thank you so much for posting such a thorough video. Added to favs.
You're welcome thanks for watching
Though i have made a few comments on this thread. This video was very informative as to what to expect. I was unlucky and am not allowed to lift my car off the ground due to my home community rules. Here is the list of tools i used, as i am a poor boy as well... 1/2 drive tools: 18" breaker bar, 12" ratchet, (2) 6" extensions, 18mm socket, 21mm socket. A folding utility knife (to cut bushings), a screwdriver and vise grips to remove them. A 14" pipe wrench. Will also need some thread locker for reassembly. These are the tools i used to get this job done without being able to lift the car and remove the wheel. Not recommended to do this way, but if you need to do this way for any reason there are the tools nessecery.
Thank you
Thank you as well, couldnt have seen it through with out knowing where to start. And i see these situations as give and take. Which is what i do.
I had the same repair on a 99 Saturn SL1. After several attempts with an impact wrench and trying to cut it off failed, I cut the bushings away, vice gripped them, and used a propane torch on the nut and stud end. I kept the grips on the stud and used the impact wrench while it was hot and it finally came off.
I also used Rock Auto.
You actually can get a Front Stabilizer Tension bar (Sway Bar) brand new. You can find it on rockauto, part is DORMAN 927124. $98.60 (with 5% off coupon) + $11.99 shipping. It comes with new bushings, washers, screws, brackets.
If i still had the car that would be a good option 👍
Excellent video. SL2 has same issues. Rot on bottom of car. Transmission mount cross member rots out also. Great Job 👍😊
Thanks for the excellent video. I’ll be doing my passenger side this weekend. I purchased mine on Amazon for under $35. I have more rust so my Saturn will be fun. I only have 118k miles
Very helpful! I like the digital torque wrench!
Thak you 👍
I've owned four S-Series over the last 25 years as second - fourth string cars in the household fleet. A new '97 SL2 until 2000, a '95 SL2 from '06 until '17 (it's still in the family), a 2002 SC1 from '14 until my son hit something with it in '17 and bent the sub frame (totaled), and a one owner 2002 SL2 I bought in 2013 for $2500 with 100k miles, which I still own, now with 142k miles. It's still running strong and rides and drives pretty much like new. To answer the question in the video, so far I've never had an issue with sway bars or trailing arms. Other than the new, under warranty '97, I've always done all of my own work on them, including a recent complete update on the '02's front end. The struts, lower control arms, and inner and outer tie rods were all original and getting a little weak. I'm getting ready to do preventative updates on the still-factory rear struts and trailing arms, watching some prep videos, and found yours.
Very helpful.
Thank you
Nicely done- it was a bear to get off. In them spots my pipe wrench get a good bite on the back side. Cheers
+STEVE ROB not why didn't I think to use my pipe wrench lol what's done is done.
Thanks man, excellent vid. My 95 saturns snapped going down the street 3 weeks ago, luckily I was right around the corner and was able to hobble back home. I grabbed 2 dorman arms and the same ac/delco adapter on amazon prime day. Just got done finishing my first one, doing the second one tomorrow. I'm in the northeast mine had crazy rust as well, run into the same issue getting it off.
Glad you were able to get it done 👍 yeah it sucks when things like that break. Good luck on the other side
one of my bolts were in bad shape, spent all of saturday driving around to no avail finding a replacement. Mech a nic do you know if rockauto carries these bolts, I checked saturnparts and didnt see them on sale anymore, checked ebay for salvaged ones no dice.
You might have to go to the junk yard and find a Saturn like yours for specific bolts like that
thanks bro, yeah it's looking that way. Dorman got back to me they dont sell the bolt, kinda strange since they sell the arms. Fortunately I located a decent salvage yard a half hour away, thats my best bet.
Good luck, hope you get it fixed👍
Good job 👍
If you do this on ramps with the wheels on everything stays relatively in place and you won't have to worry about the knuckle fighting you.
+Not Available that's a really good tip.I have ramps but most people don't. Thanks for watching.
I get to do this same thing this weekend. Our beater with a heater did this same crap. I’ll be arming myself with a saw zaw.
Good luck. Hopefully everything goes well
Yeah its purely age, rust, and stress. I am currently rebuilding my front and rear end suspensions completely. It's about a 2000 dollar job in just parts, and requires my own blood and sweat. But, these cars still have alot of life and you can get lucky and find one without alot of rust. At 20+ years old now though, you have to go through and clean and repaint suspension in the very least, replace all rubber bushings and mounts, and clean all visible rust underneath and undercoat. After that, there is still a list to do to make sure it stays in tip top shape. CHECK YOUR OIL!!
BTW CT here so I see plenty of rust belt symptoms. UNDERCOAT YOUR CARS!!!
Thanks man ! ❤ 240,000 on my 2002 Saturn. Trailing arm finally broke lol
Nice video, this might be a cost cutting thing as my 2002 SL1 had the same thing happen but my 1996 seems fine. Most of the comments are 2002 cars....which front springs break on as well.
I have a 97 saturn sl1 as well. My problem was slightly different than yours in that the first suspension piece to go out was the LEFT trailing arm. I probably drove around with it snapped in half for about a week until I fixed it, & then I less than 30 days later I had the sway bar crack (again on the left side) nearest to the wheel ... that was a bitch to replace. Then I shit you not , probably about another 30 days later I have my RIGHT control trailing arm snap on me and that’s why I’m watching this video now. Cause on the right trailing arm there’s a brake line connected to the trailing arm & I don’t see any way to disconnect it from the trailing arm.
I do find it kind of strange how all three of my “sway bars” (if you will) broke in less than a 2.5 month period. One after the other. & no I did not have any other suspension/tire work within 6months prior to all of the sway bars lol . Strange.
I love your videos that are Saturn related. I miss mine
Thank you, yeah they can be reliable cars
I had to do these on my 1999 sl 1 saturn and my 1999 sc 2 saturn, seems to be really common for Saturns, if you look at the trailing arm after you take it off it's hollow inside lol, no wonder they break
Definitely a design flaw
Wow man great video! I have a 98 Saturn S and mine did tha exact same thing.. I'm looking to replace it tomorrow.. this video definitely gave me confidence.. Thank You!
Yeah , it's not that bad of a job. It's a common failure. Thanks for watching 👍
@@themechanic6117 ok cool man! And I also have to replace tha brake shoes too but that's out of my league I will pay somebody
Maintain it and these Saturn's will go forever. I like those cars
@@themechanic6117 yeah my last Saturn was a 02 SL 5speed.. I got it up to 274k miles.. ran so good..
Nice. Take car of them and they'll take care of you 👍
Never had an SL1, but I have a 97 SL2 with 230k on it and an 02 SC2 with 100k. Never had a suspension part break on me. I'm in SoCal so I'm wondering if rust in other states makes this issue more common?
I could see the rust having a lot to do with this
Great video! Can i ask you what size bolts are the 2 on the trailing arm going up into the frame??
Thanks!
If these r in back I had the connection point rust off. The tension kept the arm against the floor but I retired the 95 sl2. Bout killed me but I had a 94 to replace it.
Sorry to hear that
This weekend I have just replaced it. I end up cutting the nut to remove the broken part of the trailin arm. I also have tons of rust on my body. I'm not sure how long I can use it considering the rust.
Drive it till the wheels fall off lol
4:20 you could use some zep 45/pb blaster and a pair of vise grips
Thanks man your video helped me out ,do you got one for the rear camber adjustment?
Sorry I don't have a video on that
I'm joining yall, my wife has a 2001 SL1 and it seems the passenger side rear trailing arm broke on hers. I will try to fix it soon, but the resource here is great, thank you @The_mech_a_nic I'm pretty sure another of your vidoes has helped me fix something else on her car as well
Glad the videos helped you
Nice video, I’m about to try and replace both of mine at my house with a basic tool set, do I need threadlocker or is it just a sense of security
You dont need thread locker. Just make sure everything is properly tightened down.
A Sawzall is your friend here
It sure is !
Do you have a service manual for this car? Where did you find torque specs
2001 SL ! with over 350K on it snapped the driver side a few years ago and the right side just the other day. Not Bad considering all the $wheeling on dirt roads I do with this poor thing.
I'd say it last long enough! 👍
@0:18 when you jack it up like that, does it release a pressure from the Rear stabilizer bar completely? See May I removed the Rear Strut for replacement and want to replace that Stabilizer Bar End Links of course, but when I removed the bolts for the Steering Knuckle, the bracket w/that Link got kind of twisted, since there is a tension from the bar. I think that is bcs the car is sitting on 3 wheels on Race Racks, so the rear is suppressed unevenly: the R Driver side is suppressed and the Passenger rear wheel (on which I'm working) is removed, so the R Passenger side of the Stabilizer Bar is not suppressed at all.
Thank you for the film and advice with that company, I ordered from them a Heater for 2001 Saturn SL2 for ~$10, they sent very quickly. seems like a good heater, I checked w/water - no leeks. They had a question, where I've learned about them, I told about you. Thank you again.
Both arms on my 95 sc2 snapped within a year of each other, both at the same point shown in this video.
It's weird that these things even break. It's not too bad of a fix 👍
Just happened to my 95 as well. I definitely don’t have the tools to do this.
happened to both of mine within a year. 02 SL1
About 4 months later the other one broke on this car lol
Im 1:20 into this. I own an 02 sc2. Same exact side, with a near exact placement for the break. However not sure if yours is an OE part. But mine is. This snapped yesterday on me. 17 years into its life.
Trailing arm broke in the EXACT SAME PLACE on my 2002 SC2 (317kmi, original owner). It's the factory-installed original part on the driver's side. Noticed the problem by hearing an unusual clunk coming from the back on the driver's side while going over a speed hump. Will Rock-Auto the part and change it out. THX for the video! From the comments regarding common failure mode, I'll order two trailing arms and have one ready to go for the other side when it goes.
Best to be prepared! Thanks for watching!👍
same just broke on my daughter's 2002 Saturn SL1, I'm not a DIY guy and don't have the tools, so paying to have it fixed, $268.18 out the door. Time to put this car on the market, she's old!
Thats alot to pay for such a simple repair
My 02 drone exact same spot week ago
Great video, bro! Thanks!
Thanks for watching
Both trailing arms snapped on my 99 sl1, so it must be a flaw with the cars themselves
I agree
Use pb blaster or wd40 to help with rusted nuts. Works wonders sometimes.
I picked up a 2002 sl1 for 300$ (208,000 miles) and my trailing arm snapped in the same exact place, so I’m guessing it’s just age after awhile they just break.
Super common ossue.luckily its a easy fix! Nice deal on the car!👍
My driver's side sounds like it's flopping around. I will just attempt to replace that bushing. Thanks for the vid.
Good luck
Ordered at parts store but ended up being for the front c arm bushings ... just ordered the whole thing 😉
do you have a link for the part at rockauto? trying to find a cheaper one than my local part store

DORMAN part #905811
my 1998 saturn sl1 did the same thing Im going to see if I can remove the trailing arm myself tomorrow . Im just curious if this could be done with out taking the wheel off.?
Probably but why wouldn't you take the wheel off? Itll make the job easier
Im doing this without removing the wheel. However yeah probably much easier to remove the wheel.
I see no reason why you shouldn't remove the wheel. Itll be easier 👍
The mech a nic i cannot put my car on a jack or jack stand, due to rules of where i live. Not even allowed to work on cars here, but the way i see it if they want that rent i need my car 😁
@@raymondrust681 I hear you. Thats rough
i have a bent rear driver strut on a 1999 saturn s series i need help plz
Replace the strut
I have 96 sat sw2 mine broke away completely off the shock every time I go over bump wrap noise iritai ng
I had the same noise. Its a easy fix 👍
Is it part of your alignment
How can I quick fix that to drive it to the shop
Just drive it. My cousin drove with that arm broken for days before bringing it to me 😁
Was that a nail in ur tire in the 1st 30 secs??
From what I can see, is that trailing arm hollow? If so, no wonder they can break. How about the front sway bar you replaced, was that also hollow?
Yes they're both hollow
Pipe wrench brother
2 trailing arms per rear of the car? and 2 rear control arms? thanks for all the vids. i just got a 2000 sw2 and i've been watching your videos to fix all the suspension and steering components
I believe that's correct 👍
I have an 02 Saturn SL1 mine just snapped in the rear passenger side
It's a pretty easy repair
What software do you use to edit your videos and put your voice on later?
+SSK_Automotive kinemaster, it's a android based app.
The mech a nic Was not expecting that... you're editing video on an android platform?
+Thomas EXOVCDS yes sir,I do everything from a cell phone.
The mech a nic Wow... impessive! You should do a "how to" video. You'll have to borrow a phone... to record you using your phone! LOL... seriously, I'd love to see how you do it or the apps needed! =)
+Thomas EXOVCDS interesting thought.... I might just do it. Recording a phone with a phone... some inception stuff there.lol
Why did you remove the tire to replace the trailing arm?
Because it makes the job easier without a wheel in my way
@@themechanic6117 but its not necessary correct?
Hello im looking for a trailing arm for my saturn sl1 what a good an reliable place should i order one
Check rockauto website
Thanks I appreciate it
I may buy one with a rusted trailing arm for $300. I gotta sell it in 3 weeks
Pretty common issue . i recently got a sl1 for $225 👍
The knuckle has a crack on the top
Are most cars in your area hit by rust this bad?
+Thomas EXOVCDS yeah pretty much, today I was under 05 ford f150 with 50k miles, couldn't believe how much rust it had.
The mech a nic Damn... how do you price repairs!? =(
+Thomas EXOVCDS it sucks since I'm currently working out of garage since we just had a baby and I'm a stay at home dad now. I cant charge high prices because I'm not a actual "shop" ,if I charge anywhere near what a shop charges people will take their business elsewhere.if I try to bring up the rust and raise the price it usually turns customer's away. I tried explaining to a guy how much of a deal I'm giving him and what the dealer would charge and he literally told me "well you're not a certified dealer mechanic so I'm not going to pay you like one" stopped dealing with him really fast. But yes the rust sucks 😂
just wondering ...How much would you charge me to fix my Saturn sedan SL 2001. I just took it to a repair shop and they charged me $300 for part and labor. BTW how much did you pay for the arm? mine cost $178 acording to a receipt they gave me, The most expensive one I saw online at Autozone for around $100 . That means they made a quick $200 in 1/2 hour. lol
+skamravec I did this job for free because it's my cousins cars but I would have charged about $100. The part itself was about $60 from rockauto. If you get this part from a local auto parts store it like $150 if I remember correctly. That's why they charged $178 for the part because of Mark up.
Getting ready to replace mine, i got it for $100 at Oreillys auto parts
Pretty easy job. Good luck
Dorman arms are roughly $68 per arm from AM AutoParts online. Find some place or someone who will put on your own parts and give that a go. That is, for someone else who is going to do this but doesn't have the tools to do so.
Where are u located I have a 2000 ls2 need minor work wouldn't mind giving my money to you
Valparaiso ,Indiana
I'm in Connecticut bought a Saturn Vue 2007 in planville dealer already like this ..everything is rotten including this part... They lied to me to sell
Sorry to hear that. Luckily it's a easy fix
Sawzall bud
or a part number? thanks
I sent you a link but you can search trailing arm on rock auto after you put your vehicle info in
Cool. Thanks
Mine broke because there was a curb I didn't see and I hit. Mine is a rest bucket underneath I have a 2000 SL2.
Good luck with the repair
@@themechanic6117 thanks
I don't mean to pick your video apart but if you'll see how you were trying to hold that washer on the bushing with your pliers the reason they didn't work is you were holding them from the wrong side whatever you're holding the faster needs to turn into the plier teeth not away from.
That makes sense. Didn't realize that
Good job homie..invest in some vise grips...
I have new ones now lol 👍
@@themechanic6117 Good those would have def helped hahaha
At Auto Zone by my area, it was $102.99
Not bad.sould be a simple fix
was that a nail in your tire?
You'll have to include a time in the video because I don't know what you're talking about
@@themechanic6117 after 22 seconds look on the inner part of tire
That's interesting. Looks like a nail to me . I never noticed that 👍
Mine was 19mm
Hmm , as long as it worked 👍
probably a lot of swearing with that rusted nut
It's wasn't as bad as I thought it would be 😊👍
Anyone notice the nail in the tire? Lol
If there is one it's staying there😂 that tire actually holds air so I'm leaving it lol
@@themechanic6117 hell yea lol. If the nail pops out just put a piece of gum
Lmao 🤣👍
😂
Hope you removed the roofing nail in that tire.
I did this in 20 minuts you make sound so hard why why why
Not every car is the same. Due to rust a 20 min job can turn into two hours
It was just fine until you messed around with it.
It wasn't like that when I brought it in to you.
I hear a new noise now after you worked on it.
I smell something now after you worked on it.
