  • Time to finally tackle this behemoth.
I'll be honest, I dreaded the thought of doing this level 100% blind when I first started this playthrough, but I've grown to love it because of how ambitious it is.
Let's get the big negative out of the way first, I hate the puzzles. It's not that I don't like puzzles, it's just that I don't like these puzzles since they grind the pacing to an absolute halt. If they were interactive it wouldn't be such a problem, but you're forced to sit in one spot and rotate pieces until you've got the correct pattern. For examples of interactive puzzles done well in Serious Sam, check out Adepti's Abode for SS4 made by Nekorie, I'll post a link for the mod down below.
    Now onto the positives!
The music is nothing short of incredible, and the custom music for both the main and side objective areas are beautiful. I think the combat track for the side objective in particular might be my favorite track yet.
The new crossbow weapon is fantastic, it takes the Sniper Rifle/Devastator debate and nullifies it by streamlining them into a powerful railgun type weapon with limited ammo and a slow firing rate.
The level itself is broken down into different biomes which is something that I've always wanted to see expanded on in Serious Sam. You got traces of it in TFE with Oasis and BFE with The Lost Temples of Nubia, but I think this is the first time a Serious Sam level has had this many different locations in one map. There's the snowy oil fields, the Pagan style village, abandoned greenhouses and farmland, church graveyard, thawed out lowlands, foggy wheat fields, and shoreline area just to name a few.
The new enemies introduced here are among my favorites in the franchise. The Octanian Legionnaires are upgraded Zealots with more HP, shiels that block explosive damage, and that attack/recover faster. Their design is badass and I love the fact you can see them forming walls around Octanian Commanders to protect them, it adds a sense of importance to their role and helps establish the Octanians as a military force with its own structure and hierarchy.
Then there's the Octanian Sentry Tower. They look cool, sound threatening, and are one of the few area denial type enemies in the game. They have a variety of different attacks to punish the player for getting too close but will eventually overheat, causing it to reveal its core. They're not too tough but are good at chipping away at your health and creating openings for enemies to attack you. I really hope to see these things return in the future and that different variants are created.
Love or hate the level, you can't deny it has a lot of cool details and definitely feels like an adventure from start to finish. Maybe this type of level design is what Croteam originally had in mind for SS4, who knows.
Thanks again for watching and as always, stay Serious!

I assume the church fight was the hardest?
Also, I think it would have been better if pipe puzzles could be solvable just like that bridge puzzle.
Another complaint of this level I'd add is what I have with other levels but amplified here: sheer size with invisible walls. It's not as bad in repeated playthroughs but during the first few it's a big nuisance. You probably encounter two invisible walls and nothingness for every secret and Easter egg you encounter. That is kind of a detriment to exploration.

yeah, Church fight is difficult, lots of high priority enemies and not a lot of space to move around. my favorite fight is on the frozen lake in the side objective area

Isn't there a secret Electro-Fish in this level?

yeah, it’s an easter egg though, not a secret. going for it usually kills you since you’ll freeze to death and have to go down pretty far to trigger it
