Saddest part of harvesting watermelons is when you are letting it get perfectly ripe, and just the day before you are planning to harvest it, your neighborhood groundhog had the same idea...
Thank you for this video. This time of year is always the source of so much anxiety for me, because I’m always nervous about when to harvest. I’m growing 8 different melon varieties this year, and I’m still as confused as ever! 😩 Your video is the first that I’ve encountered to address the fact that the melon may not be as large as expected, but could still be ripe, so I think I may do some harvesting today. Thanks again!
The only 100% sure fire way to know if a watermelon is ripe. Reach up with one finger and see if you can snap off the vine. The tendril is a good indicator but like you said they can turn brown before the watermelon is ripe. If you test the actual vine for dryness by seeing if it will snap off is the only real way to know if the melon is no long receiving nutrients. Trust me. You should never have to cut a watermelon vine.
You have to put pressure on the stem. It wont just fall of from touching it. It will still be attached well. If you try to snap it and it is still plyable, its still getting nutrition. If its ready it should snap loose. Dont rush it. It may be OK but it may not be fully ripe if you cut it. The pressure you exert with one finger should do it.
"a watermelon might only produce 2-4 fruit per season"..... mate i have accidental watermelon that's decided to grow in my yard..... there's easily more than 30 melons currently lol.
I planted over 100 seeds of water melon and this is the first time I make a garden. I have about 2000 ft of rows so hopefully I can get some nice watermelons. Thanks for the tips.
Firt time I tried to grow small round watermelon. I should gave watched a video before I cut mine off vine. I didn't know about the tendril tip. I cut mine open, and it's yellow inside😢
Great video! Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much! It's our first year of growing watermelons, and we are so excited to harvest a watermelon :) We have a few fruits that are very tiny, but stopped growing a month ago. No signs they are ripe, but fingers crossed they will ripe by the end of this season - now I know how to check it :) Thank you!
I like watermelon n all favor n all kind but I'm a container farmer I plant .my watermelon n container n some n the ground also I plant my sugar baby melon n crimson sweet n jublee been doin it ten years
I've wasted 3 mellons so far listening to youtubers. Tendrils completely gone with a nice yellow spot and sounding ripe. I'm waiting til the stem pops off.

Tendril completely brown. The vine past the watermelon is browning. The vine is still attached firmly to the watermelon?

This is actually 100% correct
I have ruined way too many watermelons believing what's available online

Haha I’m kinda in the same predicament but mine is a very large vine with one large melon growing. Kinda odd but I’m rooting for it to be good.
Checking the tendril has always been spot on for me.
🙌🏼✨

That sounds amazing! Wishing you a season of abundance ✨

I'm so glad it was helpful! Many thanks!
Thank you for the lesson on each watermelon. I have the 2nd one (hala babba?) and it's a different watermelon than the ones my dad used to grow.
🙏✨
Thanks for the great tips.
You bet!
Orange Glo tragedy! 😢 I think the mystery and anticipation is part of the fun.
Agreed!
Thanks for the tips
No problem! It may be mysterious, but there's nothing like cutting open a ripe watermelon from the garden.
Do you have a melon fertilizer schedule video?
I'm afraid that I don't, but I typically drench fertilize with Neptune's Harvest Fish Fertilizer, Soluble Seaweed Powder, and REV humic acids weekly.
Great info!!!
Oh Hi! Thanks very much! 😎
Thanks for the info! Our first year growing watermelon and we have 6 so far and 4 ready🤙🏼
Nice!!
when the melon stem can be plucked off with a finger flick you'll know it's ready.
Can I still Fertilizer my watermelon I think that way I not Fertilizer it
I like watermelon n all favor n all kind but I'm a container farmer I plant .my watermelon n container n some n the ground also I plant my sugar baby melon n crimson sweet n jublee been doin it ten years
That's fantastic! Now I've got to try it out. What size are your containers?
Do you know why my watermelon quit growing
The plant or vine could be damaged at some point, disrupting moisture and nutrient uptake.
So how about when the melon plant has aracnarose
Anthracnose? Hard to say, but depending on the severity of disease pressure the melons may ripen unreliably.
My watermelon plant produced 9. Only 3 last 😢
That’s about what I get from one plant on average.
Do you thin your plants to 2-3 watermelon each?
I plant more densely and thin seedlings to one. Historically I've spaced plantings 2 feet apart and grown 8 plants in 32 square feet.
He makes a state about 10 round. It's all the way brown and then he doesn't say nothing else.Should it be brown?Should it be green? You're not saying
Yes it should be brown 🍉✨
