We got alot less melons this year, but I learned last year how to look for the short dried up feeder vine in between the main vines to know when they are ripe. So far all have been delicious. The weather caused our vines to die back too early this year, so we had a few baby ones the chickens got, but otherwise. YUM!

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Oh yes! We had so many last year we sold them. This year just enough for family. Some small ones also towards the end. We use Hales Best. The best tasting cantaloupe ever! I am a seed saver so I have done all of this on two seed packs purchased last year. Delicious!

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms P.S. Funny story. I thought I planted some orange watermelon this year. They were actually honeydew melon.! I tended not to like honeydew melon. In the stores they had no flavor. In the restaurants they were always in a cup with grapes and cantaloupe already fermented and gross. The whole family loved them so much. I saved a bunch of seed for next year.

i've never grown watermelons due to space issues but when shopping i've always wondered how to tell if they are ripe. thank you for solving that mystery !!! my daughter grows them; i'll share with her.

That's the rub rosemary....at the grocery store they should ALL be ripe. Watermelons aren't like tomatoes...they will not ripen off the vine. So if they weren't picked ripe, they never will be!

We had very weird weather this year, with an unusually cold spring that lasted into the summer months. The plants struggled a lot getting started. On top of that, my watermelon seeds were saved from a store bought seeded watermelon, which isn't easy to find nowadays. I have no idea when the watermelon will be ripe, so this is very helpful.

I'd suggest 3 days after tendril is shriveled. "Dried tendril" can be a bit subjective.

First things first. There are many different varieties of watermelon and they don't all have the same harvesting practices, know your variety. Secondly the timing on the package is telling you the amount of days it takes for a fruit that's been pollinated to mature, it's not telling you how long it will be till your first ripe fruit after planting the seed.

I have a Sugar Baby almost ready, with plenty more on the way. The flavor garden grown is ridiculous compared to store bought. Choose your seeds wisely. Sugar baby is supposed to be dark, if it isn't, you may want to double check.

I don't think my watermelons are going to get ripe. I looked at the largest one today and the part that is laying on the soil looks no different from the part that isn't. But, two of the smaller ones have their bottoms barely starting to turn white. Last year, I tried to grow sugar baby watermelons and the largest one never got bigger than about about 1.5 inches. The Crimson Sweet watermelons that I planted this year have actually been better.
When I buy watermelon at the store, I look for that yellow spot. It's usually a good indicator for a ripe watermelon; but, not always. I think that sometimes the watermelon is sometimes picked right after the spot turns yellow; but, before it is fully ripe.

  • @Paul-xz3hw

I’m trying to grow my sugar babies vertically. Will they still have a yellow spot on the bottom?

When the melon gets to be a baseball. I use ladies knees high’s from the dollar store to support it. Just put the melon inside and tie it to whatever you can to support it with. Oh, I use industrial tomato cages
