This interview is with Marco Massarutto, co-founder and executive manager of Kunos Simulazioni, the developers of Assetto Corsa and the upcoming title, Assetto Corsa Evo (or "Evo," keeping its Italian pronunciation). The interview took place at the ADC Sim Racing Expo, where the public could try an early build of the game. Key details from the discussion include: 1. Development Timeline and Early Feedback: The game was originally expected to release by the end of summer 2024 but was delayed for further refinement. The team decided to showcase it at the Sim Racing Expo to gather feedback from the passionate sim racing community before finalizing the game. This event serves as a stress test and an opportunity to adjust based on user input. 2. Trailer and Game Footage: The trailer for Evo, which generated a lot of excitement, contains 100% in-game footage. The new game engine, designed from scratch, is optimized to render cars, tracks, and racing environments realistically. No CGI was used in the trailer, and the game's visuals are authentic. 3. Game Focus: Evo will be a combination of motorsport simulation and car culture, catering to both hardcore sim racers and automotive enthusiasts. It will continue to support esports and feature improved physics and handling. The goal is to make the driving experience more accessible while maintaining the game's realism. 4. New Features: Evo will introduce gameplay elements that previous Assetto Corsa titles lacked, such as a career mode and broader objectives. There will be a focus on free-roaming, confirmed by a teaser in the trailer where road driving was shown, allowing players to drive for fun, not just for competition. 5. Multiplayer and Mods: The multiplayer system will be improved, with an emphasis on organized online racing and better server management to prevent cheating. Modding will be supported after Early Access, similar to the first Assetto Corsa. The goal is to provide modders with a powerful editor, creating opportunities for them to collaborate with car manufacturers and maintain legitimacy. 6. Customization: Evo will feature customizable avatars, including clothing options, to reflect different driving environments (such as casual road driving versus track racing). However, there will be no microtransactions for these customizations. 7. Early Access Content: Upon the start of Early Access, Evo will have no less than 20 cars and five circuits. More content and features will be added progressively throughout the Early Access period. The interview ended with Marco expressing excitement about the public’s feedback on Evo and reaffirming the company’s commitment to maintaining the realism that has defined the Assetto Corsa franchise.
1:06 What are those weird "twitches" the car makes? Looks weird, like lag or something. You see it twice with the Alpine, once when the car is viewed from the front, and one twitch (bit more subtle) when the car has passed the camera and you're looking at the back of the car.
They way he said we will see when asked about online and usingna 3rd party website makes me believe lfm might be involved here a bit. They do kinda deserve it with all the work they have done. Maybe lfm but built into the game natively, that would be very nice.
Quite happy with the way this is looking on all counts. And I'm a skeptical one given the state of racing games that have come out in the last few years
when I got my g29, I slowly transitioned from a casual racing game fan to a simulation enthusiast. today, I only play simulators, and race on tracks. but not because I found what's "really good", but simply because there is no "street racing" sim. simcades like forza or the crew drives like sht. sometimes, I just open content manager and enter a nfsu2 server on assetto corsa just to drive around and remember. but I still have that craving. you CAN make a street racing simulator which is realistic and fun at the same time, if you make some compromises. want to play with damage? create a reset mechanic, or use reduced damage. or just play with no damage, which is the ideal in my opinion. we just need seasons, in game currency to earn and cars and parts tied to specific challenges to specific seasons. extensive visual tuning, social hubs and other social mechanics, like maybe even a betting game (with ingame currency only!!!!) on watching multiplayer races, I don't know. a reward multiplier for playing without assists, but at the same time, very well made assists and arcade-style third person camera for people playing on keyboards and joysticks. I mean, ac evo already has the fundamental parts nailed expertly. amazing graphics, extensive mod support, and a LOT of content. this time we will even get servers. we would only need a big city map and the programming needed to implement the features. it could even be done by progressive bits. since I got my wheel I dream about a street racing sim. it just makes no sense that we have none, in my opinion
good interview and good answers from marco. he's right about the "modding" which is essentially stealing from other games lol. and i think it's a good way for those with actual skills to get noticed and have their mods be officially licensed.
The “stealing” from games only affects the corporations. The artists that make that content don’t give a damn because they don’t own the content they make while working for X Y Z game development studio. Stealing from small artists is wrong but stealing from Microsoft isn’t so bad. However, what would happen if all your favorite gran turismo converts were suddenly gone. What if modders had to pay to put a badge or logo on anything? I’m concerned with the lack of details he gives for his vision.
7:50 Yes, I love that dev want to make car enthusiast have way more content to have fun with and enjoy cars, tweaking, moding them and then relax in free roam or having ways to earn money not only by racing. And enjoy progress and fulfilment from making steps to get more cool cars and enjoy them not by only selecting them in menu and going to drive them but to earn them first. And still be true to simulazioni and EVOlve into this aspect deeper. I love sim and realism and in car games I feel nostalgia to Grand Tourismo and really craved similar game on PC. There was such lack in such games on PC as almost all of them focus on racing only or are way to arcadeyish. I have really big hopes for ACE!
Honestly assetto could definitely add mods onto console . They can either collab with Mod io or they can do like every other game like teardown, snow runner, star field, dying light , torque drift 2 etc
Thinking about what marco is talking about modding, working with the car manufacturer s, I think this guy wants to give back to modders who really worked on their cars/mods that made assetto corsa the way it is today for free, giving back meaning you "might" land a job on the car manufacturers if they see that you perform well His statements really makes me believe that peter bose team and ilja team got into the development of assetto corsa evo engine
Maybe I’m just cynical, but I don’t think it’s about “giving back” to modders based on the way he talks about it. I think he wants to wash his hands of any unlicensed intellectual property that would be hosted in his game, so he wants every modder to license their content. This makes a lot of sense if they go ahead with bringing some sort of mod browser to console. If they have a mod browser in-game, then that means they are responsible for all the content that is hosted on it, including licensed content that they wouldn’t have the rights to. This might be the only way to bring mods to console, but it’s a heavy cost for modders for the game to license everything they make.
Great interview and information about the EVO game. Since we are only going to get 5 tracks on first release of the game, as they add more tracks over time, Is there going to be additional cost to new content (DLC's) above and beyond original game prices. The EVO game sounds more like it will be an Early release type of game. I will wait until I see the reviews of the released game for my verdict. Not too fond of only getting 5 tracks.
@FlameBot True, but we haven't seen a damage model yet. So far, from what I've seen, It checks most of the boxes for me, and I've been sim-ming since the 90s.
@@mvterivlistic exactly! Some manufacturers won't allow their cars to be destroyed or severely damaged in a game cause they want to "protect" their image. It's not something that Kunos could change, that's why BeamNg Drive doesn't have licensed cars.
@@achilleconte4385 yup. exactly. kunos can only do so much. there won’t be a realistic damage model on games with licensed cars in the foreseeable future & that’s not something you can blame the devs for lol
Everything is pointing towards a very successful game. Only slight concern is the modding scene, I have a feeling it might be too restrictive and might lead to a lack of content. Such radical measures for curation aren't needed in my view, since in general, the best mods rise to the top anyway. Cars ported into AC from Forza or other games are no good to drive, while the ones built from scratch can be top notch, better than Kunos themselves. Another element is that the only F1 game which are allowed more than 1 manufacturer present is the official one from EA, so modded F1 cars (with the correct liveries) might not be possible, if they are too restrictive. Kunos will almost certainly pick Ferrari, so the other manufacturers might not get representation. The best way around it would be to do the VRC and RSS style generic cars but even that has its limitations.
I agree that he might be taking too many measures because licensing content is a huge financial cost for modders which would turn away many of them. Also, about 80-90% of modded content in AC1 is not made from scratch, so that would turn away a large amount of people from modding in this game. My only hope is that “third-party” modding still exists in some capacity outside of whatever in-game ecosystem they have created for it. That would allow the modders to create whatever they want with no restrictions imposed by Kunos, while also keeping Kunos uninvolved with whatever licensed content they don’t own.
The way it's phrased, I think and hope it won't be necessary to include real car manufactures as it can get very complicated down the road. I do like the idea of encouragement for modders that create stuff from scratch. Allow talented people to flourish in this community, we can get more groups like Race Sim Studio, VRC or URD like this.
Referring to the statement for the modding capability of ACEVO. So that means modding is still available but moderated, so we will expect some quality mods that are organically made and not picked from other games? Also by mean "respecting the license holder" does it mean the modders are not allowed to add custom parts to some car brands? For example, Ferrari F40 Liberty Walk mod. Knowing the Ferrari stance of third party customisation, I don't think they would allow the modders to do it.
The way I see it, I think the goal is to bring mods to console, and the only way to host mods OFFICIALLY inside the game is to have a moderated mod browser. Kunos doesn’t want to be held responsible for any unlicensed or stolen content that they host on their game, and licensing modded content is the solution they seem to have come up with. This may lead to unexpected consequences, but as long as a third-party modding scene still exists on PC I think things will be fine.
So LFM will be obsolote ? Hope the guys from Kunos give the guys from a LFM a big thank you, because without them AC and ACC would have never been come so far, so lets see..
Be a while till modders get tools and I think they will have to pass checks possibly..... They don't want everyone ripping again like ac... It got way out of hand
he mentioned taking content from assetto and putting it in other games and i think he is talking about beamng and all the assetto corsa maps that are put in the game
Mods might be payed, like the Bethesda mod shop (i forgot the name) and that is gonna suck. If they do it this way they better put a rating system so people don't spend money on trash mods.
Assetto Corsa from 2012 is the most worthy simracing game worldwide till today. I am testing the best sim racing games since many hundred hours and me and my managers took the decision. We calculated a worth for 1 Billion US Dollars for Assetto Corsa 🏆🔺🏅👌🏻🤝. 🐈⬛
I'm not fully convinced about how Marco talks about the modding system. By saying he wants to build a platform so modders can work directly with car manufacturers does he mean there will only be mod support for approved modders? A big part of AC1's appeal was the numerous amount of silly mods that random people made, like racing on a horse at Mario Kart 64's Rainbow Road (that's an exaggeration but you get the point). I fear we will lose all of that if modders are forced to go through Kunos' approval process in order to ensure intellectual property is respected.
Most likely all free modded content will disappear and be replaced with licensed modded content in the forms of “community DLC” or a mod browser in game. It will most definitely stifle the modding community for the game, but he has a couple years to figure things out beforehand.

And I dont why but for some reason Marco resembles the former Italian prime minister Giuseppe Conte 😂
Anyway, thanks both Traxion and Marco for this great interview.
Great interview. Looking forward to try it out and to see how it evolves.

He gets me. That was refreshing af to hear.
OMG Mr. Massarutto such a nice guy! After all the description these will be for us a pretty difficult 3 month! 😅 I kinda feel that EVO will be my next all around driving title!
This game is going to be huge, was very supriced to hear career mode with an economy, and maybe even tuning and customize options, thats crazy gets me really excited
To think that they started working on AC in an office less than 15km away from my house. Thanks Marco!
Marco said everything I'd like to hear to rest assure this is gonna be epic.
regarding modding, sounds like ac evo wil have some sort of dev kit for the modding commuinty. this is great news for the community. glad marco is listening and willing to work with the modders.
Ac Evo will probably have a similar modding pipeline as AC, but I’m concerned about the licensing that will required for mods.
Great interview, thanks for sharing. Really looking forward to more detailed news about the game modes and features.
This is sounding like something I've been dreaming of. A portion for the hardcore sim racer to jump in and race, a portion of a legit career mode, car collection, car customization, and free roam. This has some real potential.
I’m hyped !! Thank you Marco and TraxionGG !
Well... I am in! Can't wait for this sim!
Hype is getting serious now 🥵🥵
So hyped I cannot wait for this new game.... Really does look like gt7 but with accurate physics... Visually impressed so far

Im excited 👍🏻👍🏻
Nice interview !
It would be great to have Tokyo freeways and LA canyons as part of the base game for freeroam
don't know about canyons but it seems there will be a free roam map from japan. it could be shutoko
@@gustavogoesgomes1863 doubt that it'll be shutoko. a rural mountain road is way more likely because the scenery will be amazing for casual driving but it will also appeal to fans of drift and touge racing
@@wingviewproductions i think there is also a freeroam map around the nordschleife 😍
Thank you for the interview. Please try to get something out of support for consoles (ideally PS5 Pro and PSVR2). Then I can save myself the purchase of a PC. I think a lot of GT7 players would get in there. Kunos can't miss that. ;-)
Hail to the new king of sims. I bet my year salary that EVO will be awesome. For me its day one purchase :)
Key details from the discussion include:
I would like the helmets in game to move like i am moving my vr headset… it would be great to look at your buddies when overtaking them😂
Very impressive.
1:06 What are those weird "twitches" the car makes? Looks weird, like lag or something. You see it twice with the Alpine, once when the car is viewed from the front, and one twitch (bit more subtle) when the car has passed the camera and you're looking at the back of the car.
Probably nothing serious since this is all pre-alpha
Could be AI driving and not a human
They way he said we will see when asked about online and usingna 3rd party website makes me believe lfm might be involved here a bit. They do kinda deserve it with all the work they have done. Maybe lfm but built into the game natively, that would be very nice.
Love this company.
I'm so hyped for this!
Forza Horizon + iRacing+ ACC +GT7 all in one? What could anyone want other than that
good interview and good answers from marco. he's right about the "modding" which is essentially stealing from other games lol. and i think it's a good way for those with actual skills to get noticed and have their mods be officially licensed.
Nice interview 🎉
I have really big hopes for ACE!
good stuff! sounds like there's a partnership with someone else for the multiplayer event management. Maybe The SimGrid or LFM integration.
Honestly assetto could definitely add mods onto console . They can either collab with Mod io or they can do like every other game like teardown, snow runner, star field, dying light , torque drift 2 etc
One of us!
Thinking about what marco is talking about modding, working with the car manufacturer s, I think this guy wants to give back to modders who really worked on their cars/mods that made assetto corsa the way it is today for free, giving back meaning you "might" land a job on the car manufacturers if they see that you perform well
His statements really makes me believe that peter bose team and ilja team got into the development of assetto corsa evo engine
Great interview
Could this be the GOAT of all sims? I would have loved to hear more about the race control aspects and oval stuff.
No. The visual damage model is still not realistic. GOAT means to me 100% sim not only 85%
@FlameBot True, but we haven't seen a damage model yet. So far, from what I've seen, It checks most of the boxes for me, and I've been sim-ming since the 90s.
@@FlameBot goat to me means greatest overall of all time - he didn’t say it was a perfect sim & there are tech & licensing limitations
That confirms it to me, open world maps
How are they going to have any cars if they can’t use real car manufacturers?
Cool dude, as always. :)
I just want some sweet drifting experience
Will it support FG and DLSS 3.5?
They should contact Bad Drivers Crew for drifting physics and car feel. They are the most popular drift cars on the game.
Knowing the Ferrari stance of third party customisation, I don't think they would allow the modders to do it.
yeah this is what I'm worried about as well
I think it means that the mod side is fucked up with assetto corsa EVO to be honest, there won't be any meme mod or whatever lol
Can we have stadium truck and physics for truck to jump ramp?
Does anyone know if ACE will have Full Force for the Fanatec+ wheel bases?
So LFM will be obsolote ? Hope the guys from Kunos give the guys from a LFM a big thank you, because without them AC and ACC would have never been come so far, so lets see..
@@michaelschaberl8598 there's rumors that lfm will be integrated in evo
Just watch Marco's smirk at 11:22 after being questioned about external websites, pretty sure it'll be integrated
Shutoko Revival Project let's goooooo
Be a while till modders get tools and I think they will have to pass checks possibly..... They don't want everyone ripping again like ac... It got way out of hand
Mad mike in the background at the end 😂😂
is sane as acc brake simulation sine sort of on off switch or more like rf2 and Iracing technology???
Wish a had a pc. Will it release on consoles to?
Yes
Not on launch through
Nohesi 2.0 is boutta be dumb fun
if they would manage finally a proper multiplayer system that will be awsome
No microtransactions is amazing. Love you babe
You should ask when they will have this game released on Xbox series x.
I am interested to know more about how to be an official modder or developer. Can third party developers make money in EVO?
Please make the post race celebrations feel like and end of a story rather than a blank page
Can you save the race progress like in ACC?
That poor elephant getting totured in the final few minutes :(
Alfas still remains! :) 🥰
anything about VR?
Yep.
Not in this interview, but it's supported at launch from what they have said in the past. 3-panel setups too.
Steam page says yes
Yeah should have VR and trackIR as previous AC
8:48 you came here for this.
You're welcome
Is this supposed to replace ac or acc?
"Both" type situation
he mentioned taking content from assetto and putting it in other games and i think he is talking about beamng and all the assetto corsa maps that are put in the game
He was talking about ripped content in assetto corsa not beamNG. Most of the Assetto Corsa stuff in BeamNG was from RF2 anyways 🤷♀️
This or next week..... is he cheekily tipping towards a demo for the public ? :D
Mods might be payed, like the Bethesda mod shop (i forgot the name) and that is gonna suck. If they do it this way they better put a rating system so people don't spend money on trash mods.
This game is going to shift the goalposts
