I read Mary's book on her father and the trump's. Its an interesting read. I empathise with Fred jr as I know what it is to be an eldest son deliberately undermined from a young age by an aggressive, game playing father. No fun. It seemed Fred jr was the only one with the imagination/guts to start a career separate from the 'easy' money on offer from Fred sr. It's also a shame that some immediately go to 'alcoholic' when talking about Fred jr. Imo he self medicated, who doesn't?
It's a bit why Don Jr kind of went off the rails. Apparently, he used to be very different, and now he appears to be a cokehead now or on some sort of speed. I had some of this type of treatment in my family and when I turned 18 I moved out and we didn’t speak with or see one another for 2 years. I never felt like what I did was ever good enough while living in my parents home. I moved out and found my way and I did quite well for myself.

I love Fresh Air, I listen to it at least a couple times a week. Terry Gross is a fantastic interviewer and I've read both Mary Trump's books. So glad I found this on YT!
I don't care for her as an interviewer. Too clinical. But she does have good guests and does cover interesting things about them.

I read Mary's book on her father and the trump's. Its an interesting read. I empathise with Fred jr as I know what it is to be an eldest son deliberately undermined from a young age by an aggressive, game playing father. No fun. It seemed Fred jr was the only one with the imagination/guts to start a career separate from the 'easy' money on offer from Fred sr. I had some of this type of treatment in my family and when I turned 18 I moved out and we didn’t speak with or see one another for 2 years. I never felt like what I did was ever good enough while living in my parents home. I moved out and found my way and I did quite well for myself.
Mary, thank you for your frankness and honest handling of your father’s trouble with addiction. Your grandfather was influential in your Dad’s sense of selfworth. I admire your personal and professional voice that gives a context to Donald’s family interaction. You also give witness to the cloud that a high financial status can cast on inter generational relationships. You are an example of how much homework you have obviously done to understand all the dynamics and effects. You have a voice to help us understand Donald and his lack of dealing with himself. Terry Gross has always been awful. Her matter of fact recounting of Mary's father's drinking was completely unnecessary.
Fred had given her dad his name, and then discovered the younger one possessed the dastardliness to lie, cheat, steal, stab people in the back, and worse, so Donald cooked it up to cheat Mary; the same way he has cheated nearly everyone who got tangled up with him.
Donald Trump has NEVER committed a kind or selfless act in his entire miserable life.

I give Mary gratitude into insights I feel unable to articulate since Donald's first interview I recall on late night television, and felt a stomach clutching nausea listening to the bleating emanating from what looked like - the girls who perse their lips for photos - his too puffed up mouth.
