Thanks very much for this. Living in Canada in a wood heated house, humidity is a huge factor. Just one thing - I wish you would recommend people go to their local music store to buy things rather than Amazon. I have found that it is mutually beneficial to have a relationship with a local business with human beings that can help you. I realize this is not possible during lockdown, but when this is over they will really need our business.
I think he was saying if you buy on Amazon you’re more likely to have issues with your set up. It sounded to me like he was cautioning against that not advocating for it.
I'd love to buy from local music shops and tried when I first started playing. I can't afford to spend twice as much at those places than I would from Amazon.
When you want to tune to A don't tune to something else. Truly this is advanced expert advice. Thanks I would have never figured that out on my own, every time it called for me to tune to C I would tune either b g or m. Thank you so much for the amazing content you provide UA-cam viewers.
Hello, I just got a used ukulele and I just put some new Aquila strings on and my A string has a buzz/ twang. I tightened everything I could think of. Any suggestions? Btw, I’m in La Mesa. Thanks
@@jyutzler Hi. Thanks, I tried that over and over. After a few months I bought a used guitar and decided to try that instrument instead. I love it and it's going great! But thank you!
Hey Terry :) Good tips... yeah fluorocarbons can sure take a while to settle in. I need to lower the action on one of my Ukes for sure. Is there a good range in terms of mm height above the fretboard at the nut?... and maybe one or two places higher up the neck. Cheers Peter.
G string of my uke is very loose though on tuner it shows G.. but it's very loose and giving very bad sound please help. And the strings I am using are aquila super nylgut nylon strings
I am a total beginner, actually I can play classic guitar and I thought it would be an easy task to tune the ukulele, however I noticed when I tried to turn the tuning pegs the string itself would pull it back and turn it in the opposite direction. I tried to solve it by stretching the strings and then tried turning the pegs again with no success...and ended up snapping the string instead as I turned the peg more than I should have...Does anyone else here have similar issues?
Hello there, I don't know if you have an answer by now, but I had the same problem. My ukelele doesn't have geared tuners, it has the basic horizontal ones, that come out straight at the back. Often the tuners slip, but they can be tightened with a screwdriver, tightening the screw at the back of the tuner head. I hope that makes sense!
Right Amazon! I got a concert ukulele and action does seem pretty high. Brand is Luna. I inquired at my local music center and they said they can do it for $25, is that a good deal?
I am tryinng to tune my uke again today..... And for some reason, for the C string, no matter what, the tuner is not finding C.... As I am tuning it, it shows every letter BUT C, no matter what direction I turn it... I am frustrated because I didnt have the problem before today. All my other strings are in tune, but no matter what, I can't get the C back on that particular string. What is the problem????
Hey! I really need some help, I've had my ukulele for like a year, but I didn't really use it. I would like to start playing but it just sounds so weird, I've tried everything but it still sounds terrible:( i got it in my local music shop for like 50 euros, I don't know what is wrong with it, thanks for the help!
Just got a kmise off Amazon of course, cant afford a better one lol. Mine hums is ass off there is an adjustment tool that came one with it. Any suggestions? I don’t even know what the tool is for but there is a place for it in the sound hole. Can you tell I am a newbie
Hi, I have a question about intonations and tune. Well the tune is fine in an open string the GCEA but when I tried it on the 12th fret it is still tuned but it is a little bit higher and not on exact stop of right tune. So what is the problem, the height of the bridge?
How you tighten up the strings ? I have a new one and i am playing every day for a month and i did a very good tuning actually in the beginning so now the more i play i have the opposite problem. The strings became so loose that i cant catch them for the chords .how do i make them tight again without loosing my tuning?
@@daisysmum1810 ok so you have to tune it higher, it needs to be an A4. There are two different types of notes on the lele such as low and high, since I originally had my A chord at a low hz it made the string loose. All you have to do is tune it up to and A4, it'll feel super tight and you'll think the string might break but it won't :)
Problem #1 is bad intonation. It makes most cheap and/or vintage instruments nearly impossible to play properly. Sometimes a luthier can fix it, sometimes not. Problem #2 is fret height. Kalas seem fine at first (at least as practice instruments) until you realize that the action on the first or second fret is too high. You can't lower the nut too much because that will cause buzzing elsewhere. Problem #3 is cheap ukuleles having a sharp corner where the body meets the side. I've had to literally file them down to keep them from cutting into my arm. Straps obviously obviate that but since so many ukes lack strap pegs, I've decided that it would be better for me to learn to hold them with my arm. Problem #4 is the peg not being tight enough, causing the string to detune when you play it. I pack a small screwdriver in the case for these times.
1st problem: They are toys. 2nd problem: Even a reputable music store cant set them up for intonation, read point #1. 3rd problem: You must always smile when playing them, but smile soon turns to grimace. See points 1& 2
Just got my uke today, and I thought maybe the strings are bad cause of the buzzing. But when my brother plays it, it sounds just fine. Silly me :')

Very helpful! I just got a new Caramel CT402 Acoustic/Electric and I can use this info later. Great job, Terry!
One string immediately goes way out of tune. I tune it, and then as soon as I play, it's out of tune again.
Keep stretching it. Some strings take longer to break in that others.

Great point. Yes $25 is a good price to lower the action, it’s about what we charge at store.ukelikethepros.com
for tuning do you have to use the clip on tuner or will a phone app work fine too
I was hoping for something about the fret wires being not quite flush on the sides. If we weren't on lockdown, I'd go to the music store and ask.
