@@Thizzamajig maybe I can explain since I, too, was "in the newspaper" as a kid, and my parents were ecstatic. Idk about the OP, but for me, being in a small souther town, being in the paper was like "being on TV" in that it was a big deal to be recognized "officially" by the powers that be. I doesn't matter if anyone reads it (in fact, a lot of "newspapers" are now digital only, which may be the case for the OP), the important part is the official-ness of the recognition. Not just Amish, small southern towns, too (at least in my case)
I remember when this kid was throwing 102-103 and was supposed to be the next big thing. I guess injuries slowed him down. I always thought he had good stuff though. Cool to see him pull this off
Not a baseball fan, so I am apparently missing something. The second to last pitch was outside, barely even touching the edge of the strike box. Does that count like in archery? Touch the line at all it's good, but I would have thought you had to get it at least mostly inside the line, like tennis. The last pitch was a mile outside and it looked like he checked his swing long before the plate. How was that a strike? Anyone?
My pitching game was in little league I threw 9 pitches all strikes. 3 out. Next inning I gave up 7 runs including a tomahawk home run where my pitch was two feet over his head. 😂
5, possibly 6, of the pitches were out of the zone, I feel like an "immaculate inning" should refer to all 9 pitches being in the strike zone. MN helped out with that one.
I had not ever heard that term before. I thought it would be 3 pitches to get 3 outs. To me 3 pitches to get 3 outs is better than 9 strikes. (I guess the MOST Immaculate would be a reliever coming in with runners on base, throwing only 1 pitch to get a triple-play!!!)
If the first two batters ground out on the first two pitches of an inning, the third batter knows (or is told by his manager) to NOT swing at the first two pitches, to give his own pitcher a chance to rest, and to give his teammates a chance to run to the rest room. So you will rarely see a team make 3 outs on just 3 pitches to start an inning.
The fact that The Show couldn't even supercharge Kopech for this is sad. I guess they will never do it unless they hit a save milestone for a relief pitcher.
4 out of the 9 pitches were out of the strike zone. This is where Kopech’s problems start. The pitches had a lot of movement, but if those pitches are taken and called balls, Kopech loses confidence. The Sox should trade him if they can get excellent prospects.
I’ll never understand why this is considered an immaculate inning. Find me a pitcher that would rather have an “immaculate inning” or what I would consider one. 3 outs on 3 pitches. Why wouldn’t that be an immaculate inning?

Not to nitpick, but Maldonado hit a HR in game 2, which they lost. He didn't play in game 1.

If the pitch touches any part of the strike zone, it’s a strike. And it’s subjective by the umpire. Certainly not perfect.
