RevucumberTechUSA I think you'd be surprised by the mathematical aspect of simple games like this. The idea of pathing is extremely important in this game, that's why the common winning strategy involves "Just make sure you pick a side and don't swipe the other way." There is actually a branch of mathematics called topology, which is all about pathing.
Well to my limited 5 minute exposure of the game the new numbers that pop in every time you swipe are random (where they come up, not where they're located). I'd imagine that nullifies much of the strategy in this game quite effectively.
MrSnowman BlarBlar... is right in what he says, yes the numbers do pop in randomly and most of the time you will get a 2 and occasionally a 4 but in doing what he says i.e never swiping down then you can rack up quite a remarkable score
You should do more "Professors React" videos. It's a good concept, maybe not just games, but also intellectual topics and their stance on certain news stories. I'd watch that; it could give people an idea of the general scientific consensus.

The most annoying thing about 2048 is that it's more popular than the game it's a copycat of, the mobile game "Threes" In response to the copycats, developer of Threes did a short video documenting the whole process of them developing the game, and the amount of thought that went into it, as well as the aesthetics and music. They spent a year and a half developing the game, in less than a month, it's been copycat twice, with 2048 becoming more popular. A few sites have already reported on it, and it shows the problem with mobile gaming, how so many coders will just rip off other games (Flappy Bird) to make money, or gain popularity. 2048 was developed by an Italian youngster who wanted to practice programming so used 1024 as a launching point (and 1024 ripped off Threes). He didn't expect it to become more popular than the game he ripped off. It's sad to see this happen to hardworking people, not get the recognition they deserve. But as someone who has played both Threes and 2048, Threes is the better game, more charming, great music, funny characters, and harder to beat.
Why 2048? It's a rippof of "thress" made by someone who doesn't know what he's doing. Giving 2048 spotlight is really disrespectful to the team that spent a lot of time and effort on making their original game.
No disrepect intended and I linked to Threes! in the video description from the start - but all the emails were asking for a video about this game!? And I can't get too high and mighty myself as this video itself is a parody of a genre!!!
Numberphile Either way, this video is surely going to secure a couple more thousand 2048 downloads, that ''threes'' really needs and deserves. By making this video while almost having a million subscribers, you're indirectly suporting something that's way worse than pirating, and you're being pretty irresponsible. I don't mean to disrespect you at all, I've been a fan of numberphie for years. I just feel really bad for the ''threes'' developers.
Peanutz996 The games were released only a month apart from each other from what I could discover, so saying one ripped off the other is a bold statement (I mean, Twitter is a ripoff by that standard in that another social site EXACTLY like twitter came out a month prior to twitter (they had better Unicode support than twitter did). And besides, powers of three aren't that interested or that useful to most people, but powers of 2 are what make up most technology today. So yeah, I bet 2048 was in dev already but not released and somebody found out and made threes and released it before 2048's official release (this really happens a lot by the way) So unless you have something more than just a claim based on 1 month separation of release dates (or unless my research led me astray) then we can safely disregard you concern and complaint. And besides, you could remove the numbers and just use images (like threes) and 2048 still makes more sense.
AzrheiLP Are you seriously implying that two games with the exact same concept just happened to be released so close to each other? One of them crafted with a lot of atention to detail, and one of them being an uglier unbalanced version of it? No that doesn't happen. Here you have a quote from the 2048... Nerds, Geeks, it's all the same. It basically describes anyone who has a passion for complex mental skill. And often times with the side effect of zero desire for physical skill.
There is a massive element of luck involved with it- once you get past a certain skill level. My personal best is 67,000 (I got the 4096 block), but I doubt I'll be able to get much higher than that. The right blocks have to fall in the right places and if you're lucky enough for this to happen to you, then you can play away and go as far as you like!
sean ofleen Yeah, I'm around the same level. At that point you need to start really being proactive about not getting into situations where you're forced to compromise your structure. Requires another level of thinking. If you can get to 8192 I'm sure there's plenty of room to get to 100k ;)
I mean, that guy's day to day work is incredibly mentally taxing. The game is simple and doesn't even require any skill to win, so it seems boring. It's like taking an MLB player and putting them in a game of tee ball with a couple of 6 year olds.
I did a module on quantum physics during my final year at universit.y. And it was the most boring module I did. Just my opinion though, I don't expect everyone to agree.
I think it's all because no matter how brilliant these people are. They're already put off with the little urgency of stretching their entire mental capacity to get to 2048. Because for them this is but a trivial matter, not worth too much of thinking. Now you tell them it's nobel prize for whoever gets to 2048 first and then you'll see them really working.
Associate Professor Padilla has a good point. If a person's profession is doing some fairly high powered brain stuff, logic based games would probably be the last thing you want to do when you get home.
I find it hilarious how near the beginning it shows the professor's area of specialization (which sounds really complicated) with the clip of the professors just confused, not getting the point of the game, and trying to wrap their head around it.
Now I'm imagining salad finger as a chemistry researcher before that war. And Hubert Cumberdale, Jeremy Fisher and Marjory Stewart-Baxter were his colleagues ;)
If you know the right algorithms to use when playing this, 2048 is just the beginning. I got to 32768 and nearly reached 65536 but lost due to a poor dice roll.
Put the highest value tile in the corner. Continue along the edge with successively lower valued tiles. When you get to the end of the row, the next tile goes directly above and then you go back across on the second row. You end up with and S-shaped path of successively lower valued tiles which can easily be merged.
So the trick is to put the highest value number in the corner. Contrary to what some guides say, you do not just want to randomly move your arrows in two directions to make all the numbers go into the corner, because it actually kind of matter where you put your pieces, especially when you're getting close to making a big number because you are using most of the squares. You can choose which corners/sides you want to use, but I typically put the largest number in the bottom right corner. I then have the numbers going along the bottom and sort of zig zagging back and forth. Now that you know what you're aiming for, it's sort of intuition from that point on and also figuring out what works and what doesn't.
The highest screenshot value I got was a 131072 block with a score over 3,4 million... I had the whole spiral starting with a 2. I could undo my moves (used it max 5 times in total :p) but I got a 4 at the end of the spiral again and continued playing. I think I reached more than 5 million points but lost the data after I switched to a new phone....
4:22 while I don't want to dismiss anyone's favorite past times and ways to decompress, I must say I too spend all my day in front a computer screen at work, and when I get home I spend all my time in front of my computer screens at home too, playing games and whatnot. I always felt this kind of logic is a little bit like expecting professors not to read in their spare time, because they spend all their time in front of letters at work...
He says he doesn't want to spend time in front of the computer at home because he does it all day at work, but he also says he does sums and physics for fun......which is what he does all day at work. Sensing the bias in this one tbh!
I think the result might have been different if you posed the problem as "under what conditions could you keep combining numbers long enough to be able to reach 2048". Their reactions to their ending scores indicates, to me at least, that they hadn't grasped the point of the puzzle.
It must be really depressing for the Threes developer to see their game being cloned, and the clone going viral, while most people have no idea what Threes is.
I am surprised by people saying that they "Have a life and a concept of fun" Everyone has a different concept of fun. I find most apps absolutely dreadful. Fun for me is either coding, or learning coding, or alternatively, pranks in public or on friends. I find most games dreadful and boring, especially when you are on your own.

..what?
Man likes physics and football and wants everyone to know.
When the guy specialising in quantum dots describes something as boring, you know it must be bad.
no. not at all. you are very wrong.
Just my opinion though, I don't expect everyone to agree.
well mine quantum physics were very excited. Maybe wrongly teached to you?
@@Urtlesquirt and yet, nobody won.
"Not as exciting as chemistry" - Best quote ever existed.
I love that quote, especially since I'm going to be studying chemistry soon :)
Karsteski Me too!
They can't really say the dislike video games based on a 20 minute experience of a free to play mobile game...
When he said that it's not as exciting as chemistry, I had no reaction.
"Not quite exciting as chemistry"
Said science man himself
I think it's all because no matter how brilliant these people are. They're already put off with the little urgency of stretching their entire mental capacity to get to 2048. Because for them this is but a trivial matter, not worth too much of thinking.
Now you tell them it's nobel prize for whoever gets to 2048 first and then you'll see them really working.
0:39 I can watch Laurence Eaves play all damn day xD.
Associate Professor Padilla has a good point. If a person's profession is doing some fairly high powered brain stuff, logic based games would probably be the last thing you want to do when you get home.
Marvin Rock guess he plays FPS games, just imagine it XD
It really doesn't require any advanced thought whatsoever.
How you can optimize a game like 2048 so poorly that it doesn't run well on my toaster let alone an iPad 1 is beyond me.
Please do more "Professors react to" !!!
Patrik Järvelöv they will get sued
Professors react to test scripts🌚
So that's how they not get distracted by things, they avoid potentially addictive things, this idea is gonna help me focus so much
Uhh, this was pretty obvious....and easier said than done
is it wrong to describe these guys as adorable?! cause they are TOTALLY adorable!
o_O
I find it hilarious how near the beginning it shows the professor's area of specialization (which sounds really complicated) with the clip of the professors just confused, not getting the point of the game, and trying to wrap their head around it.
"you just want to watch breaking bad"
Seeing those professors wanting to do math and calculations instead of play 2048 really hit my feelings hard
"Do you play games?" "No I delete games"
"Associate Professor Tony Padilla...
Liverpool FC season ticket holder" lol
So much swiping down! I can't bear to see it after the hours I've put into this game
Professor Eaves clearly hates touch screens, they don't react in a way he would expect
The prof at 2:42 sound like salad finger.
sounds*
this is the best comment in this thread.
Looks a bit like salad fingers too.
Now I'm imagining salad finger as a chemistry researcher before that war. And Hubert Cumberdale, Jeremy Fisher and Marjory Stewart-Baxter were his colleagues ;)
Luis Harmer salad fingers is hubert...
5000 on the second game? im mad lol.
Anthony Shakir 5000 isn't a power of two...
CoolAsFreya he's talking about the guys score tho...
It's 2^12.2877123795...
Thank goodness, if they got addicted we'd enter a new dark age
If you know the right algorithms to use when playing this, 2048 is just the beginning. I got to 32768 and nearly reached 65536 but lost due to a poor dice roll.
Frederick Schulze teach me how to get gud senpai
Prof. Poliakoff making fun of Prof. Moriarty was one of the most wonderful things I've ever seen. He couldn't contain his grin.
The best toilet game ever.
"I delete games from my computer"
Why i'm crying help me somebody
This game gets easy when you play it a lot of times
I think the result might have been different if you posed the problem as "under what conditions could you keep combining numbers long enough to be able to reach 2048". Their reactions to their ending scores indicates, to me at least, that they hadn't grasped the point of the puzzle.
I love how you put the professor's high esteems, expertise and experience next to them swiping a screen looking puzzled :D
1:24 Liverpool FC season ticket holder 😂😂😂
We all knew scientists were mad, but this?
+Klobi for President lol stfu, I'm a Liverpool supporter but I found this funny. yes they can be bad. 😂😂😂

Apparently every person who helped develop threes is subscribed to your channel.
0:33 Is that PROFESSORS*REACT!/2048?? What is that equal too?

4:14 Loved the little dig at Dr. Moriarty by Dr. Poliakoff
Money line "... do math all day you just want to go home and watch Breaking Bad"
It must be really depressing for the Threes developer to see their game being cloned, and the clone going viral, while most people have no idea what Threes is.
Zach Gage, the developer of threes, has lamented about this several times on twitter. I feel his pain.

"I don't play games, I delete them" - Best quote ever!
I am surprised by people saying that they "Have a life and a concept of fun"
Everyone has a different concept of fun. I find most apps absolutely dreadful. Fun for me is either coding, or learning coding, or alternatively, pranks in public or on friends.
I find most games dreadful and boring, especially when you are on your own.
There is a chemistry version though :)
Berniksus what game? i wanna try
regiel zyrus garrido There's an app on the Google Play Store called "2048 Chemistry" by Misho M. Petkovic :)
Berniksus thanks
Who has google play though?
Carter Kenney everyone who has an android device?
2:25 Annoyed by computer games... Interesting...
I thought they would be a little more supportive. I know The One and Only Legendary Dr. Grime loves 2048.
Oh the lag on that machine.
That would've killed it for me. I don't find it engaging anyway, but playing it not smoothly would make me hate it.
Could you possible do a video about solving this? I know quite a few people writing AI systems to solve it, and I feel it would be interesting to talk about. Maybe something for Computerphile though. :)
This has taught me a ton about my procrastination and exams failure patterns...!
What a funny coincidence, my Chemistry Professor showed us today a video from Prof. Poliakoff and now I see him again whilst browsing thoughtless through UA-cam.
