My dad introduced this movie to me at the age of 12 and it instantly became my favorite movie. My dad has since passed but I always think of him when I see this movie, hear the songs or see a quote. I am now able to quote the entire movie at the age of 25!

One of my fondest memories of youth (Dec. 1963 or Jan. 1964) is attending this movie, with the wildest audience response I ever experienced! The joint was literally jumping, with kids cheering, laughing, screaming, in just an absolutely insane movie experience, to one of the funniest films ever made!

Yes.. I remember the first time I saw it was, maybe the late 60s and on NBC Saturday night at the movies. My sister and I seen together, we were grade school kids. And Jonathan Winters, kicking Phil Silver's in the chest wow really cracked us up! That fantastic screenplay, soundtrack etc.. I remember, 1980 Summer HBO was televising it. And just to watch the movie was like, the start of a great vacation adventure through California, to the Pacific off the edge of the Earth there almost in Tijuana there. Or did he cross that bridge at the end didn't he. So he was actually in Tijuana, right when the conclusion happened and they're all on top of that fire escape? Anyway at that point I'd never seen an ocean before, so it was a real real thrill to see that. And now I'm three blocks away from Pacific Ocean, and at this moment. And probably traveled many of the routes that the movie was filmed on. Grandpa and Grandma my father mother and uncle and aunt, they all seen it in Cinerama in Omaha nebraska. My grandparents ducted when the plane seemed was going to crash into the air traffic control tower. Remember with the Buddy Hackett Mickey Rooney, and Carl reiners.. Lol.. like Jonathan Winters says it's like we can all find our own character, that we would identify with in the 🍿🍿. Or maybe some of those characters, we can imagine is one of our cousins. Jonathan winners reminds me of a one of my late cousins. And so tell me my friends, what characters would you identify with. And then sometime I'll tell you the character I would identify with the most. Take care and get out there and it's under the Big w.

The music by Ernest Gold is superb, and perfectly fits the lunacy of these people. I love the slow, harmonic music in "Follow The Leader" (at 6:37) when the line of cars is traveling easily down the highway--before the sudden crazy transition speed-up at 8:58, when each one tries to overtake the others, and then back to a slowing crawl at 9:24. The film won the Academy Award for Best Sound Editing, and received Oscar nominations for its color cinematography, film editing, sound recording, music score (Ernest Gold), and original song for the title song.

I'd forgotten about It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World until recently, but now I remember how much I always loved this score. It's stuck around in my head more than anything that actually happens in the movie. It's appropriately "wacky" for what everyone expects for a comedy, but more often than not it's wistful, or foreboding, or manic, or just purely chaotic. I think those are actually more conducive to comedy than "funny" music.

  • @freeguy77

At 13:33 begins the vision of the middle-aged couple in the car, slowly driving along, minding their own business, when suddenly (at 13:51) they are forced off the road by the caravan of cars determinedly wanting to get to their pot of gold hundreds of miles away! The hilarious sequence for the frightened couple, is reflected in their terrified faces in desperately trying to keep their car upright and intact in saving their lives, punctuated by the intermittent loss of their personal belongings in the car to the barren desert! The scattered remains of their property was highlighted during their trip downhill, off-road, and at the end of their travail when the car finally comes to a sudden stop (at 14:10). A few seconds after surviving the scary experience, the stunned man then says to his wife about their wild ride, as best as I can recollect: "I've said it before, and I'll say it again: I didn't want to move to California!" The audience exploded with more laughter at that great throw-away line. Now (June 2020) his funny line is real and more apt than it was in 1962, when the movie was filmed. The strong movement to the West, and to California most of all, was still dreamed of by many in the U.S. and elsewhere around the world. California was nicknamed from almost the very beginning of its existence as, "The Golden State" where you can live in great weather year-round, and with luck, make your fortune, exemplified by those hunting for gold in 1849! It became a State the next year, 1850, and with its exceptional population growth rate, became the largest of the 50 State sometime between the 1960 and 1970 Census, with a population estimated now at over 39 million, larger than many countries, of which it would presently rank an amazing 35th in size out of over 190, if it was its own country!

31:57, so I've read, points to a long-lost scene where Sid Caesar and Edie Adams come out from behind the bushes they were in, and Adams gets the idea to close her eyes, turn around three times, and start walking towards what she thinks is the path of the big W, but because her eyes are still closed, flips over a park bench instead. That information is in the liner notes of the 33 rpm RECORD of this score, which I used to own. Now if I could only find it again as well.

Below are all of the dialogue tracks typed out in full. I hope you enjoy listening while reading along!
    .
    (2) 2:22 ~ IT'S A FACT ~
*Melville Crump:* "I-it's only a possibility now, it's only a possibility that this man was telling the truth. If it _was_ the truth, then it is a _fact_ that this place is almost 200 miles away. Now I suggest that we quietly get into our cars and drive down there at a safe, sound speed -- keeping each other in sight of each other -- and then when we get down there, we dig up the money -- providing that there _is_ some money there -- and when and if we _do_ find it, we share it amongst us in a simple manner."
    .
    (4) 6:08 ~ EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF ~
*Benjy Benjamin:* "We figured it 17 different ways, and every time we figured it, it was no good; because no matter _how_ we figured it, somebody don't like the way we figured it! So now, there's only one way to figure it, and that is: every man -- _including_ the old bag -- for himself!"
--------> *Ding Bell:* "So good luck, and may the best man win!"
*Benjy Benjamin:* "Right! Except you, lady; may you just ... _DROP DEAD_ !!"
----> *Lennie Pike:* "Alright, alright, we all agree on that."
    .
    (6) 10:15 ~ A STARING CONTEST ~
*Otto Meyer:* "Fellas, I'm glad you're here. Look, I need your help. Here's what happened: I had this blowout -- I think there's a spare in the back. It may be a little flat; take a look at, will ya, kid? Is there an airport anyplace around here? Look, if the spare is flat, don't bother fixin' it; gimme a new tire, alright? Ya ain't got a new tire, then you'll have to fix the spare. But don't look at me; _move_ it, will ya, kid? You -- ya could be gassin' up while he's workin'. What is it, a staring contest? Come on! _Move, move,_ will ya, kid?! _Come on_ !!
    .
    (8) 14:15 ~ OH I COULDN'T ~
    > *Ray:* "Holy mackerel. When he started to ... Listen, we better get him tied up; what are we gonna do if he comes _TO_ !?!
    *Irwin:* "Hit him again!"
    > *Ray:* "Oh, I _couldn't_ !"

    (10) 16:36 ~ WHAT'S WRONG WITH AMERICA? ~
*J. Russell Finch:* "Wait a minute, are you knocking this country? Are you saying something against America?"
*J. A. Hawthorne:* _"Against_ it? I should be positively _astounded_ to hear of anything that can be said _for_ it. Why, the whole _bloody_ place is the most _unspeakable_ matriarchy in the whole history of civilization! Look at _yourself,_ and the way your _wife_ and her _strumpet_ of a mother push you through the hoop. As far as I can see, American men have been totally emasculated! They're like _slaves_ ! They die like _flies_ from coronary thrombosis while their women sit under hair dryers eating chocolates and arranging for every 2nd Tuesday to be some sort of _Mother's_ Day. And this positively infantile preoccupation with _bosoms_ -- in all my time in this wretched, godforsaken country, the one thing that has appalled me most of all is this preposterous preoccupation with _BOSOMS_ ! Don't you realize that they've become the dominant theme in American culture, in literature, appetizing, in all fields of entertainment, in _everything_ !? I'll wager you anything you like; if American women stopped wearing _braziers,_ your whole national economy would _collapse_ overnight!"
    .
    (13) 22:46 ~ THE ONLY WAY TO FLY ~
*Tyler Fitzgerald:* "You know what I need? I need a drink. There's some ice and stuff back there; why don't ya make us all some Old Fashioneds?
--------> *Ding Bell:* "Old Fashioneds? You think you ought to drink while you're flying?"
*Tyler Fitzgerald:* "Well stop kidding, will ya, and make us dome _drinks._ I mean, just press the button back there marked _BOOZE._ It's the _only_ way to fly, ah-ha-ha."
    *Benjy Benjamin:* "Ah-ha-ha."
    .
    (15) 25:18 ~ YOU'RE BUGGING ME ~
*Sylvester Marcus:* "You're getting me -- boy are you buggin' _me,_ man! I'm gonna -- when I get -- I'm gonna nail -- Ooh-hoo-hoo, go -- I'm get-, I'm gettin' bugged now. _Whoa_ man! * honk *
    .
    (18) 29:43 ~ AT THE BIG 'W' ~
    -------> *Ding Bell:* _"HEY_ !! Hey ..."
*Melville Crump:* "Did ya see anything?"
-------> *Ding Bell:* "Nothing, not a thing."
*Monica Crump:* "Are you sure he didn't say something else, something you've forgotten?"
*Melville Crump:* "Look, he said it would be buried under a Big W and that we'd see it."
-------> *Ding Bell:* "Yeah, well it's gotta be here."
*Melville Crump:* "Look, I tell ya what we do: you go the way we came, and we'll go the way you came. Well, we mighta missed somethin'. Hold it ... you go the way we came, 'n we'll go ... That's right, ok, let's go!
    .
    (23) 43:02 ~ JUST DESSERTS ~
*Mrs. Marcus:* "Now see here, you idiots, it's all your fault! Because if you hadn't -- _OOH_ !!

My favorite movie of all time! I remember seeing the open showing at the Warner Theater in Pittsburgh --- the line to get in was blocks long! I was only 10 years old then - my Dad took me to the picture. He was disturbed that Spencer Tracy turned "sour", as he always played the good guy in previous films. I view this movie now with much nostalgia, seeing the cars I saw when I was kid, etc. Any idea where one could obtain a copy of the printed musical score???

    The lyrics are here:
IT'S A MAD, MAD, MAD, MAD WORLD
From the film "It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (1963)
    (Ernest Gold / Mack David)
Mixed Chorus (Film Soundtrack) - 1963
    The Shirelles - 1963
"It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world
    !
In France the girls wear scanties
    ,
While on lamb chops they put panties
    !
I'm telling you it's a mad, mad, mad, mad world
    !
    A Japanese named Luey
    ,
Says the Chinese hate chop suey
    .
    Without a doubt
    ,
It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world
    !
The only thing you are sure of
    ,
    Is that nothing is sure
    .
Have a ball, live it up, only fools give it up,
    Toujours the amour, but toujours
    !
    So be a happy gaffer,
Be a screamer, be a laugher
    !
Let boys be gay, and say, "What the hey"
It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world
    !
    My dear, old Uncle Herman
    ,
Says that French Toast should be German
    !
    Jawohl, that's right
    ,
It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world
    !
I know it may sound jerky
    ,
But in Turkey, who eats turkey?
    Yes, yes, confess
    ,
It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world
    !
    Our traffic is so congested
    ,
    Mass confusion on wheels.
But Detroit is adroit, what they'll do in Detroit
    ,
    Is make bigger automobiles
    !
    So be a happy fellow
    ,
    Be a clown, boy, Punchinello!
Get off the shelf and enjoy yourself
    ,
It's a mad, mad, mad, mad
    ;
    It's a mad, it's a mad, it's a mad, it's a mad---world!"

6:39 is "Follow The Leader". 11:52 at first sounds like a paraphrase of "Gaudeamus Igitur" and is part of "Away We Go" that starts at 10:39.
