What you said at the end is interesting to me. You said you prefer illumination's mediocrity over truly awful movies, and I feel the exact opposite. I can't tell you what happens in sing 2 even though I saw it yesterday, but I ADORE talking about Jim Carrey as the Grinch and how many weirdly racist jokes there were in that. But you made an excellent case on your end and now I understand why someone would prefer that! Heck, the whole video was well made! Nicely done!

The Lorax’s production history sort of reminds me a lot of what happened to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. If you look at the conceit art, you could see that the movie was initially going to be way more faithful to the games (in terms of designs and locations), and there were plans to have way more content that is not present in the movie (like Bowser’s Koopa Troop being way more diverse instead of just spamming Koopa Troopas and other basic enemies, as well as Yoshi having more of a role than just being in a sequel bait post credits scene).
My best guess is that the movie was going to be way more in-line and respectful to the Mario IP, but instead they took the lazy route by having it be a generic nothing story, the characters being either flanderized or incredibly generic (Bowser is the worst offender of this), have the characters have off putting overly detailed redesigns and have them being played by celebrities that sound nothing like the characters, and shoehorning in countless mediocre references to artificially make the movie seem better than it actually is.
