On the note of that streaming service, wasn’t the tag line “A streaming service to save the family” already kind of a red flag in terms of being on the more religious side?
Fun fact: There was supposed to be a theatrical FOP film, which was eventually scrapped. For those who don’t know, here’s what it would’ve been about: Timmy, who feels sorry for the way Vicky treats other children, wishes that every kid in Dimmsdale had fairy godparents. But this backfired as Vicky, being under 18, is still considered a kid and gets Jorgen as her godparent. However, with no one to protect everything in Fairy World, the Anti-Fairies and the Pixies join forces to take over the world.
That Jorgen aspect of the plot seems kinda contrived. Like, there are canonically thousands of Fairies in Fairy World, so how did Vicky get one of the most important fairies and not one of the many background fairies we saw over the years.

Man, one of my favourite episodes was that Trixie episode where you get to see more layers of her and how being outside of social norms can get you villified. Which it never gets brought up again and from then on shes just a one dimensional 'popular girl' character that just likes being pretty and rich.
Every time that “tell me I’m pretty” episode came up on TV I’d always roll my eyes and change the channel because I remembered the one where she was an actual human and it felt like they NEVER played that one.
Yeah i wish they did something with Veronica too like have an episode where Timmy helps her with her homework and of course she puts on the " I'm just doing this for getting better grades not to be your friend " face and act And at the end of the episode she learns that it's ok to hangout with not so popular kids like Timmy Turner
19:40 fan theory: I’m pretty sure since Timmy wished to be Catman’s official lawyer he has a law degree, and I like to think at the end of Channel Chasers, he probably got a career in law.

All butch Hartman had to do in order to go down as one of the most respected people in animation of all time was to be quiet and play it cool after fairly odd parents ended
There's an episode in the latter half where Timmy wished Mr. Turner would romantically love dogs to form a love triangle between him and Sparky. They were so desperate to write any story related to Sparky that they had to resort to turning one of the main characters into a zoophile. All I can say is: Good luck covering that and the rest of Season 9. You're gonna need it.
@@Spacething7474 I assume so? Partially since making folks fall in love with stuff is meant to be Cupid's shtick. Due to this & how often (and I mean very, VERY often) Jetix aired FoP, the general audiences here only watched the better seasons, and the Nick episodes are known as the boring ones
This also meant that when we got the Jimmy Timmy crossover, the voice actors for FoP had to be temporarily replaced due to both shows beign dubbed in different countries.
Phoenix Douchebag, the truth is I liked the dubbing of the first part(Mexico) such as Liliana Barba(Timmy), the Mexico cast of FOP aren't so bad. Cosmo's voice sounds better compared to he had from Poof ownard which sounds awful.

I like the Dragon Ball reference Channel Chasers because of the choice to go with og DB's art style. Definitely the more positive side of the show. A lot of the episodes are easily ones that I can remember, and the overall style of humor blended well to not drift too far off from the main plot. It was nice getting to hear about these again, I’m looking forward to see your explanation of the later seasons.
Breakin Da Rules has a surprisingly dark tone at times like when Crocker is hunting you in school or when you’re in the stealth mission at camp. And heck even Tootie chasing you intimidated me. Models, animation and controls are definitely rough but the gameplay is fun and I enjoy it nonetheless.

31:15 The awful compression and loud, annoying sound effects combined with Cosmo just rambling aimlessly almost makes me think they leaned into it for a bit, which I'd be okay with because it's way funnier than what he was actually saying.
I love S1-S5, the movies, and specials but I think "It's a wishful life" made a mistake giving Cosmo & Wanda to Chester. He doesn't need fairies when he has a loving father unlike Timmy. Yes he's poor but it's been proven Chester is fine with the life he has and while he lives in a trailer park he's still the most selfless person on the show, joining the baseball team out of fear in order to put respect back on his family's last name. Even when he got Norm he tried doing things for others, and while it backfired he's heart was still in the right place and that should disqualify any kid from fairies. They should only go to those with bad or selfish intentions such as Timmy Turner, who constantly has to be reminded in every episode his actions have consequences.
Timmy isn’t a bad kid outside of seasons 4, 5, and 10. He can be snarky, but if his actions end up hurting anyone he’s pretty quick to set out to make things right. Heck, he’ll do it even if it ISN’T his fault. He’s a good kid, he just has poor impulse control and a short attention span.
I don't like how you made fairies seem like some sort of punishment and morale lesson. They're given to miserable kids who have a shitty life and need the help/need truly loving parents/figures in their lives. They're not punishments, and making painting Timmy as just a selfish and bad kid is really disingenuous and wrong. You're victim blaming a kid who basically has everyone in his home-life hate him and no real loving figure, which is so fucking shitty to do.

Hoo boy, it's the start of a Fairly Odd Retrospective starting here with the golden years of Butch's longest-running show! The seasons I liked! Before the unnecessary main character additions started piling up and forgot Da Rules of its own continuity.
you did such a good job with this Nick. going deep into Butch Hartman cartoons can be a nightmare but the journey you took for this really paid off and i can feel your interest / passion for it throughout the video. FOP had basically become a joke in my mind until we watched this and i remembered all the things i loved about its early seasons. BRAVO!
The Fairly Oddparents is probably the most cynical cartoon Nickelodeon ever produced, which is really saying something considering they also had Invader Zim.
Fun fact: Invader Zim and The Fairly OddParents actually premiered on the same day (disregarding the Oh Yeah! Cartoons FOP had, of course), on March 30, 2001!
I remember as a kid in one of the few Nick magazines I used to own, it came with a fake brochure for Camp Learn-a-Torium. It was really goofy and entertaining seeing all the detail put into it.
Well I know that Britney Britney was written out because her reference source was in her "scream and shout and let it all out" (translation: Former child star) phase and that Trixie was written out because Dianne Quonn retired. Everyone else is a mystery to me
@@Spacething7474 we can't be the only ones who saw that one episode where Timmy's dad thought Crocker was trying to get with his wife. Come on, guys. We all heard what he said about him.
Even though I haven't watched Fairly Odd consistently since they took it off the air (in Canada), I was able to quote just about every single joke word-for-word that you used. Watched it practically every single day and there's no way it's going away now. While SpongeBob was my number 1 favourite in the 2000s, Fairly Odd got bonus points for me for the continuity, references, things SpongeBob didn't do. I don't think we ever got the Oh Yeah Cartoon show/segments, so that "9 Ball" joke was completely lost on me when I first saw Abra Catastrophe, alongside all the other callbacks. I still stand by saying the first 5 seasons are great fun, despite what the internet tries to tell me. For a decade (2003-13), YTV also had a Victoria Day tradition called Sponge-Odd SquareParents Day, where they showed back-to-back FOP/SB, with new episodes at the end of the day (usually for the Spongeman). That was always fun!

As much as I dislike Butch Hartman, his Twitter post of a picture of Tobias Funke from Arrested Development with the caption "Happy Sunday!" Is pure, absolute comedy, and I'm mad I didn't think of it first.
As a young artist in 2008, I hella struggled with the Fairly Oddparents artstyle. For some reason, it was very hard to replicate for me. I think now I'll be able to do it no problem.
The best part of the Jimmy Timmy Powerhours were easily the secondary casts interacting with the mains of the other shows. Sheen getting the ability to be granted magic was at the same time the worst and best thing that could've happened
Actually the original Catman is public domain and that's why they could just straight up use his entire appearance for a Batman parody. He's one of those heroes whose rights lapsed during the copyright law shuffling of the 20th century. There's actually hundreds of public domain heroes from the golden age of comics.
Reminding me here of why I never did like Remmy. I understand his parents weren't around much to the point of not even remembering his name, but he's hardly made sympathetic by that when he tries to get another kid to lose his just because he's jealous, and never even once considering he may lose and what it would mean for him to show that he didn't appreciate what little he even had. Even when Timmy tried to help him out and the magic ultimately working for a short time, that was way more than he deserved, acting as if this was Timmy's fault and not his for starting the fight in the first place. Then he got Jaundissimo back and became even more superfluous to things.
To me it's always a shame that the programming outside of shows is never really archived, because to me the quirky transitions and announcements for upcoming episodes and shows are incredibly nostalgic.
Oh my God, I was OBSESSED with Fairy Idol when it came out! Norm was my favorite recurring character at the time and the fact that he got a song(and co-reprise) was mind-blowing. My friends even got me the DVD as a going away present when we moved to a new state. My opinion of FOP and Butch may have soured over time, but the memories of enjoying it in its prime will outlive that for a long while to come.
I have no idea why but the first ten seconds of this video made me audibly laugh. I don't think I expected the "how did we get here?" to resonate so much but when you look at how the show turned out the statement is the only thought you can walk away with
In a way, Channel Chasers was an improved version of Abra Catastrophe. Villain gains magical item and becomes super powerful and Timmy must defeat them by using Da Rules to get his fairy godparents taken away.

This was a journey, and I loved it. I’m happy someone else is going on the same trek as me, because The Fairly OddParents is a very big commitment to watch the whole way through. There’s a place in my heart too for the classic seasons, despite all the yelling, cynicism and dated humour that slowly trickled in. (Like frankly, some of the stereotype humour wouldn’t have even been okay for the 1960s.) I think what keeps this part of the run an investing watch is that it did start off with heart, fun characters and limitless potential. So when it did get repetitive and flanderised around Seasons 4 and 5, it wasn’t a dealbreaker because the groundwork was so strong. Your insight into specific trends and callbacks was pretty cool to see. I’d actually forgotten how tight the continuity was on this show. And while there was already a downward trajectory by the end of this run, I can’t wait to see how the last 5 seasons go for you. Maybe you’ll like some episodes I never cared much for, there’s still tons of interesting stories despite how bad it got. Besides, I know you’d never be completely disappointed with a show touched by Scott Fellows.
🙄 The show truly started to go downhill shortly after Season 7 began until it drowned in Seasons 9 and 10. Season 6’s quality is the same as Seasons 4 or 5, either or. Long story short.
But Scott Fellows has been involved with the Fairly Odd Parents since season 3. He only became the head writer and story editor for season 6 due to Steve Marmel's head departure from Nickelodeon in 2006. Scott Fellows stepped away from writing the show after the Wishology trillogy. In Season 7 to 10 Ray Delaurentis was hired to work on this show and he became the head writer/story editor.
@@luckylol I just wish more and more people would realize that Season 6 was truly the last good season of the show for multiple reasons but it often goes in one ear and out the other.
@@manofwisdom000 I agree! Season 6 wasn't even a bad season. It undid it's flanderization from season 5 and it had a couple of good episodes. Chindred sprits, Fairly oddlympics, Wishmas, for emergencies only and few others. Theres few medicore/bad ones like Vicky gets fired and birthday bashed. The 7th season is where it starts to have problems especially in seasons 9 and 10 with it's continuity errors, flanderized characters which includes Crocker, Mr. Turner and Foop (Occasionally) which most people seem to forget because all i see mostly is people commenting how the new characters (Poof, Sparky and Chloe) made the show go downhill without real explaination.
@@luckylol Exactly plus the show’s problems in many episodes after Wishology had nothing to do with Poof anyway. And yeah, Sparky and Chloe were just speeding the show’s downward spiral up a bit, but on top of Sparky and Chloe were all the other problems as you described thankfully.
I'm always surprised how much people like Dad. To me, Dad is just another Cosmo. He has a few very funny moments but a lot of it just feels like a "wow how wacky/stupid!" character.
On the art style, a lot of people in the Danny Phantom fandom (Phandom if you will) attribute Steve as making things more expressive and stylised than Butch. Especially in storyboards Steve worked on. Idk how much Steve worked on FOP, but his leaving is often cited as the decline in show quality in DP S3
It's funny you're posting this cuz I just rewatched the Oh Yeah Cartoons shorts, partly cuz of Mr Enter's Top 10 OYC shorts. They ALL still hold up well!!! Wish I could say the same about half of the series. I actually agree with Alpha Jay that Meet The Odd Parents should've been the final episode. It was perfect: came out a few months after the show's 10th anniversary, has a concept that was never fully explored before and it even ends with a book being closed! It may not have been as perfect of a "just in case" finale as Channel Chasers but at least it felt like a finale, especially compared to the one we got! Edit: commenting as I'm going along, I actually always shipped Timmy with Veronica more than either Tootie or Trixie. Still wish they wrote her character more positively, eventually becoming a part of his friend group and endgame love interest. At least Braceface and As Told By Ginger did something similar to this. Edit Poof!: You didn't mention that Method Man and Redman voiced HP and Sanderson in the School's Out AND Fairy Idol songs!
I’m curious. How would you write Veronica more positively/ integrate her into the friend group? I’ve never seen either show you brought up as examples. I’m working on my own interpretation where this sort of happens.
I have two theories about Timmy's parents' names I go back and forth on: - They're named Terry and Teri, keeping the alliteration and fitting with the timing of Sherlock Holmes saying "Your names are..." and getting cut off by the slamming of a book with just enough time for one or two syllables before they confirm he was correct - They're literally named Dad and Mom, or slightly longer names that easily shorten to this. I believe this is also the case of the parents in Cow & Chicken, and feels more in line with the show's humor overall.
I remember watching the show and enjoying it. Kinda dropped off the show long after I stopped watching Nicktoons (Which I ironically watched more than regular Nick) I find it kind of interesting that Nelvanna has the distribution rights to the show’s first few seasons internationally meaning that the show aired on Jetix/Disney XD in other territories.
This retrospective is just as entertaining as the show. I remember watching this program in college for its humor and visuals. Tara Strong and Daran Norris were hilarious.
The reason Nick didn't get sued over Catman is because Catman is a public domain character, alongside Captain Marvel (now called Shazam) and the original Blue Beetle.
In my opinion, “it’s a wishful life” is one of the worst, most irresponsible episodes of a cartoon ever made. I cannot comprehend how a segment aimed at kids with the message of “the lives of your loved ones would be infinitely better if you didn’t exist” made it to air
Holy cow this really takes me back. FOP's classic era aired on Fox Kids/Jetix in my region (LATAM) and it had enough reruns that I still remember almost every episode and scene featured here... except the first Christmas and Valentine's specials. Those aired extremely infrequently, so a rewatch would most likely feel like watching them for the first time. But yeah, I saw FOP every single day back in the day and had a lot of fun with it. Stuck with the show up until season 8 I think because of a lack of cable TV for some time after it came out. It was unintentional, but probably the right call in hindsight. Can't wait for part 2 to understand just how infamous the last 2 seasons are.
I had pretty much the same experience as you (also LATAM). But in my case I stopped watching probably right after season 5. I remember being blown away by the awesomeness of Channel Chasers and Abracatastrophe.
Season 5 wasn't that great. People only like it because it's pre-poof but in reality it's not that great of a season. Some of the episodes aren't as funny and the characters had too much energy.
Honestly, I didn't stop watching until season 10 but even then I tried to watch as much as I could cuz Fairly OddParents is one of the most important cartoons to me and I will love it forever. With a theme song that good how could you hate?
Its kinda weird how so many interesting chacters and lore stuff the show just kinda forgets later on. I feel like if the show didn't forgot these things it would have lasted at least a couple more seasons without the we run out of idea feel
I know someone already commented on this, but I liked that you were able make this video an hour long without it dragging and keeping the audience's attention.
I'm just gonna say it, cause I didn't see any mention of it in the first batch of commemts. The editing is really fire in this video, the little-AMV openers to the seasons, specials, and Breakin the Rules are especially addicting to watch.
I'm unsure if this is what was meant by cut, but I vividly remember the puppet scene in channel chasers on TV, it just didn't have Butch Hartman in it on TV. SO idk if that was the cut put or the scene in general just isn't online.

Which it never gets brought up again and from then on shes just a one dimensional 'popular girl' character that just likes being pretty and rich.
And Veronica, they just smashed down the female characters, also Vicky became a gosh dang psycho
And yet she basically still bullies her friend Veronica, and this same episode no less, so its hard to get behind her.
Every time that “tell me I’m pretty” episode came up on TV I’d always roll my eyes and change the channel because I remembered the one where she was an actual human and it felt like they NEVER played that one.
@@princesscrystal6410 I always felt bad for Veronica

There's an episode in the latter half where Timmy wished Mr. Turner would romantically love dogs to form a love triangle between him and Sparky.
They were so desperate to write any story related to Sparky that they had to resort to turning one of the main characters into a zoophile.

@@Spacething7474 I assume so? Partially since making folks fall in love with stuff is meant to be Cupid's shtick. There was Just the Two Of Us, and I remember Jorgan getting angry over Timmy and friends "wishing" that Carl fell in love with a turkey or something iirc

OH. MY. GOD. Please... please tell me you're joking. Season 5 is the last one I remember watching, so I'm really out of the loop.
Fun fact: in Latin America FoP aired its first four (and part of the fifth) seasons on Jetix, with the other part of season 5 onwards airing on Nick with much less publicity.

Although with the second and third specials the opposite happened.

I like the Dragon Ball reference Channel Chasers because of the choice to go with og DB's art style. You might think since DBZ is the more popular series they'd go for a more angular and "realistic" art style, but no surprisingly, they went with the rounder, cutsey-ier art style from 80's Dragon Ball

🙄
The show truly started to go downhill shortly after Season 7 began until it drowned in Seasons 9 and 10.

I have two theories about Timmy's parents' names I go back and forth on:
- They're named Terry and Teri, keeping the alliteration and fitting with the timing of Sherlock Holmes saying "Your names are..." and getting cut off by the slamming of a book with just enough time for one or two syllables before they confirm he was correct
- They're literally named Dad and Mom, or slightly longer names that easily shorten to this. I believe this is also the case of the parents in Cow & Chicken, and feels more in line with the show's humor overall.

This retrospective made me realize how entertaining and creative episodic cartoons can be. To me, the first 5 season of FOB will always be classics.
Season 5 wasn't that great. People only like it because it's pre-poof but in reality it's not that great of a season. Some of the episodes aren't as funny and the characters had too much energy.
The dude with the best Phineas and Ferb review posting one for Fairly Odd Parents? My day couldn't get any better.

10:43 has such an iconic piece, and yet I still to this day don't know the name of it
