Thom Yorke/Radiohead/The Smile are rare. Few musicians/groups make music that appreciates and becomes more substantive each time it is heard. One may even dislike a song at first listen. If you are one of these people, keep listening. Unlike banal pop music that loses its strength, this music gets stronger and more meaningful with repeated plays. True beauty.
Interesting comment. I agree - its often the songs that aren't instantly likeable or songs we're not too sure about at first that become more appreciated or favourites.
Agree. It happened to me with many of their songs, recently with 'Foreign Spies.' Now I can’t stop listening to it, and it gets more beautiful every time
I’m on the edge every time i hear this, i wanna burst in to tears it’s so beautiful. It does have a Hymnal, almost Gospel feel to it with Thom’s soaring vocals. Wonderful job fella’s!!!❤❤❤❤
I know we're used to Thom and Johnny because of Radiohead, but despite how I only heard Tom Skinner on this Smile project and not his other works he probably became my favorite drummer of any band and I'm not really much into drums nor am I a drummer to understand what and how he does all these things, I just think he's amazing.

Has to be my favourite song on the record…to say this is gorgeous would be an understatement. I can't get enough of this song, and I don't think I will for quite some time! Haha I remember hearing it in the Cinema during the wall of eyes screening. I don't know what it is about it but it hit me like a bloody bullet train in the best way possible. I don't think I'd be able to verbally convey my love for this track and have it make any lick of a sense, but I will say this! In the theatre, it was my favorite track. And I'm happy to say that it is still my favourite now.
Crying my eyes out listening for the first time. I really missed connecting with a song this deeply for so long, thought I would never feel this again, I was so wrong.
My favourite thing about this album is that every song transitions seamlessly into every other song. The sequence doesn't matter. Put it on shuffle and see. The ambience and flow, the tone is so steady and consistent.
This is one of, if not the most beautiful new song I've listened to in a long time. Just finished listening to this album and I can confidently say this isn't just the best album of 2020's so far, but it's one of my most favorite albums of all time, maybe even in my top 10s (though I really dislike "listing" music and art in general like this). Also the ambient outro of Under Our Pillows, man, I've not had such a soul transcending experience in quite some time now. I know we all want Radiohead back, but really I don't mind Thom and Johnny going towards this ambient electronic+post/math/krautrock direction with The Smile, not to mention Tom Skinner is so awesome. I wasn't expecting this album to be so damn good and I'm really looking forward to their next endeavors!
Please notice the ringing sound that introduces the swelling strings at 2:49, it sounds like taking the safety off. Then the same sound returns at the end, underlining Thom's singing "DON'T think you know me". This album is full of masterful details.
A magnificent way to finish the album. I liked it better than the first. I hope Radiohead comes back but this the smile proyect has been amazing so far
This is incredible, it’s elegant and beautiful but the lyrics are so dark and brutal… Thom is very good at writing this kind of stuff as we saw already from Nude, No Surprises etc
Every song on the album is so unique and unexpected. The transitions are so smooth that play any song after another and create a new journey for yourself. This is a masterpiece! If the first 2 albums are like this, we are gonna talk to aliens once they reach No4.
I notice a visual theme here - my mum and a mate of mine picked it up in the cinema. It reminds me of human anatomy, specifically organs - and now I think of it, much of the smile artworks done by Thom and Stanley do have this same interesting theme. If you've ever seen a model of the human vascular system, you might be familiar with what I'm talking about - it's almost a bit like tree branches and river streams, or topographical maps - River streams and topography in particular are things that are explored a lot in Stanley and Thoms work for the smile. It's such a cool theme! Because you see the relationship between the human body and nature a lot. Think those little veins (or the midrib) of a leaf, or how trees can sometimes look a little like lungs. Very cool!
“You Know Me!” by The Smile is a haunting and introspective ballad that delves into themes of perception, vulnerability, and self-discovery. The lyrics explore the idea of someone having the ability to see deep within the narrator, yet simultaneously not truly understanding or knowing them at all. It highlights the contrast between how others may perceive us and who we truly are underneath the surface. The song also touches on the feeling of being trapped or cornered, as well as the presence of betrayal and mistrust. Overall, it paints a complex and enigmatic portrait of the narrator's inner world and the relationships that surround them. Song Meaning The emotional journey in "You Know Me!" takes listeners through a range of intense feelings, from vulnerability and uncertainty to frustration and defiance. The opening lines convey a sense of exposure and unease, as the narrator feels like their innermost self is being laid bare for someone to see. This vulnerability soon turns into a feeling of being backed into a corner, with the lyrics referencing a boxer on the ropes and the point of a blade. The chorus then becomes a repeated plea or assertion of "You know me," reflecting a mix of desperation and a desire to be understood. The bridge introduces a voice of authority telling the narrator to "keep your arms up," symbolizing a struggle or conflict. The song ends with a defiant statement, rejecting the idea that anyone truly knows or understands the narrator. Quotes 1. "You've wound yourself around me like you know me" This quote reflects the theme of false intimacy and the way others may try to project a sense of knowing onto the narrator. It suggests a suffocating or invasive presence that the narrator may feel trapped by. 2. "And when my back is turned, the point of a blade, a blade" These lines evoke a sense of betrayal and danger, highlighting the idea that the narrator can never fully let their guard down. It speaks to the vulnerability of being hurt by someone they thought they could trust. 3. "Always 'You know me'" The repetition of this phrase in the chorus emphasizes the narrator's yearning to be understood and seen for who they truly are. It conveys a mix of desperation and frustration, as if they are trying to convince themselves and others of their true identity. 4. "Don't think you know me, don't think that I am everything you say" In the outro, this quote serves as a final rejection of others' perceptions and expectations. It asserts the narrator's autonomy and individuality, refusing to be defined or confined by the opinions of others.
After Listening to these pieces of music Live, I understood how deep these artworks are. I completely changed my mind and after Berlin's concert in 2024, I couldn't listen to any other music. The performances have many details; you can feel them with your heart. Every component begins at the right time in the music and it seems it must be there. These are a masters piece.
Every time i hear this album i get a new favourite, this is the current favourite. This album has gotta be worth a Mercury Music and Grammy nomination, if not outright winners❤❤❤It’s gotta be between The Smile and Qotsa

I dunno, the first 7 seconds sound like I'm roughing with an end mill with earpro in.
Not me. I mean The Smile. Such a downgrade from Radiohead, for me personally, WITH EARS
This is extraordinary even for Thom. It sounds like the midnight musings of an angel stuck on Earth. 😂
Well said.
YES! It has a hymnal, old-as-time feel to it. Gets stuck in my head like a cadence.
It made my eyes well up the second that first note sailed out of his mouth. Angelic indeed.
