Norm seemed to take more delight when the jokes didn't get a big laugh. He'd stare at the audience and repeat the joke or try to explain it, as if it was their fault that they didn't get it. There's a great interview on Conan O'Brien's podcast with Jim Downey who was one of the writers on SNL and worked closely with Norm on the Weekend Update slot. Jim said if they came up with two jokes, and one was a bit hack but guaranteed to get a big laugh and the other was really clever but likely to bomb, Norm would always go for the latter.

The President of NBC was a personal chum of Simpson's and asked Norm to stop taking the piss out of his friend - which was a red rag to a bull and just made him do it all the more relentlessly! Norm MacDonald and Harland Williams are two of the funniest people to ever walk the earth, and they are both Canadian. Just a shout out to Canada, from a British person who is tired of hearing about how amazing British comedy is, when people like Josh Widdicombe are millionaires.

The funny part is that SNL fired him saying he wasn’t funny. Then hired him as a host later on !!
