I'm really new to Atgames Pinball, and I am enjoying myself. At 58, I grew up on pinball and was part of the early Arcade scene. I am extremely lucky, since my son got me this pinball unit for Father's Day this year. Thus far, I have no mods, lights, or PC, etc, yet... But, hopefully, in the near future, I can. I especially want to find a cheap PC I can afford to do these amazing tables you're showcasing.😮❤😁
Heck yeah!! It's quite a worm-hole to dive into, but (in my opinion) - well worth it!
Appreciate your views Dale!
I have fallen into this hobby over the summer with an ATGames table. I can say that I got a Beelink SER5, and it works great with just the ALP table (2 screens, HD). If you're not worried about the highest possible resolutions and framerates (which the ALP can't display anyway), then it seems to be plenty of computer for the VPX and FP tables, including the ones with video pup-packs.
@dalecummins689 Cheap ex-office PC's, like Dell, HP and Lenovo are a great way to get a cheap but good spec PC. Ebay usually has them and local merchants will sometimes be a good option, depending on where you live. They sometimes even come with a decent graphics card to get you started.
But even without, you could just get a good second hand one for not much money and if the power requirements (the GPU) are not too high and it isn't too big to fit, you could whack it in an old Dell or something similar and then stick the PC in your AT Games pinball machine.
It would be a (relatively) cheap path to upgrading your pin and man would it be worth it, considering just how many great tables are available these days! Anyway, that's what I would probably do if I were you, but either way, good luck with the new pinball table, sounds like you are gonna have a blast for many years to come 👍
Thanks Ed for this recap 👍 Showing my age now but I remember the Logan's run movie and the TV series from the early 80s! Enjoyed it a lot when I was a kid.
Hi Al - good to see you my man!! Yeah, you and me both fall into the same age category I'm afraid! LOL
The rothbauerw physics/flipper tricks are a big part of what makes nfozzy flipper physics far superior to VPX base or any other physics implementation. It allows for accurate flipper tricks including live and drop catches, tip passes, flicks to bring the ball under control, flicks to "nudge" the ball into position for e.g. a backhand, and cradle separation during multiball. These are all skills that you can improve in and (hopefully) master, and they translate accurately over into real pinball flipper skills. VPW and their collaborators set their tables up such that you need to use these skills to bring the ball under control, rather than just rely on the ball settling for an easy cradle such as with the other flipper implementations and also Pinball FX.
Awesome - thanks for the detailed synopsis, Dan! Great knowledge!
I'll think we've come all the way when I can make the ball hit the "glass." I haven't been able to do that in the virtual world yet. But the physics us getting better every year!
@@LarryTalbot_1313 the physics is there already i.e. with balls going airborn, but I can't think of a table where that has happend before.
@@PinStratsDan real or virtual? I used to do it sometimes on a couple of tables I played frequently as a youngster. I don't think its possible on a virtual table.
Has happened to me on Mata Hari numerous times shooting the saucer (just like real life) 😅
Thanks!
Excellent as always Ed....Johnny Mnemonic Tutorial please.....washed down with a couple of Stella's. Thanks again.
My man!! Gary, I'm humbled dude! Thank you so much!
Nice save on, Logan's Run! All of those are great tables. I'm really enjoying Defender at the moment, I really love those 80's tables.
That Defender though is TOUGH!!
I'm yet to figure that one out, I just drain constantly (as I did in the video).
Another great list. Can't wait to try X files.
Yeah, it's a great mod of a great table. Really fun.
SEGA never gets the appreciation that they deserve. They manufactured Pinball machines in 3 different countries over the years. I believe they are the only company that can say that. SEGA ENTERPRISES; Japan; (1971-1978), SEGA S.A./SEGA S.A. SONIC; Spain; (1972-1986), and the USA; SEGA Pinball; USA; (1994-1999). I've only played 3 of their tables on location when they were new: Mary Shelley's Frankenstein; Starship Troopers (I ran into that one the most), and Harley Davidson (what would be the First Edition). Stern released the Second Edition (which I've never seen on location) and the Third Edition, which I have played a few times on location.
Of course in 1999 Gary Stern bought SEGA Pinball and renamed it Stern Pinball. He had run SEGA Pinball, and prior to that Data East Pinball. Stern owns all rights to the tables made by Data East Pinball, SEGA Pinball, and Stern Pinball, as well as the older tables made by Stern Electronics (which got it's start by buying Chicago Coin, who had among other things made Pinball machines. Stern Electronics started off being run by Gary's father Sam Stern.
The new depth on some of these tables , thanks to VPX 10.8, is just amazing, especially in the X-Files table 7:02 🤩That filing cabinet looks so much taller now, when comparing it to the one on the table you were doing the recent X-Files tutorial video on, and everything just pops!
One thing I'm curious about though, is the new depth available on all VPX tables (if running the new 10.8 update) or does each table have to be updated to implement the new depth effect?
Thanks for the great video showcase each month, they are such a great way to learn about so many tables and updates I never knew about 👍🏆
Get the pup pack for Batman.. It's great ❤
Defender table is like the game… brutal.. 😊
Amen brother!
The Batman and the Lord of the Rings both look incredible…
I kind of like Defender. I was the video game Defender champ in my neck of the woods. The guy that ran the backnof the resturant where we used to hang out and play used to kick me out because he said he couldn't have one kid playing the same game all day, because he wasn't making any money. It got so bad i couldn't get anyone to play against me any more.
Sadly, i completely stink on the pinball game. How is that even possible?!
Hey Larry - you saw MY abysmal performance on it! That last ball was hilarious! That table is tough!
I LOVE that it uses the real sounds from the arcade game though - that's cool as heck!
@@digitalvictory8266 actually a lot of "classic" tables use those old games sounds. I never knew that until I got a ALP.
I usually like a challenge of a table, but not when I'm a former champion on one and a complete loser on the other. Somehow it just isn't fair!
Hi would any of these tables work on the legends pinball micro?
Did you upgrade to the 64bit to play these tables from VPW or did you just up grade to vpx 10.8 5 bata I tryed to up grade to 64bit and crashed my system lucky backed up.. also using pinball Emporium.
I did upgrade to 64-bit! So far, so good - no issues! (crossing fingers)
Awesome video! What vpx 10.8 do i download and where do I install it? I think Farah Fawcet was in logans run ,and i still have my poster
Hey - good to see ya, bud!
I don't anybody famous that i remember was in Logan's Run.
This is the tutorial I followed the upgrade: ua-cam.com/video/BhMY24oFlQk/v-deo.html
Thanx a bunch
So did you do the 64 bit upgrade with VPX and Vpinmame Freezey on pinball Emporium using 64bit Tutorial and it didnt jack up your front end and tables
Hi David!
I haven't used Pinball Emporium in a long time. It's more or less just manual for me, anymore. I just know what I want to play and look in my tables folder and double-click on it. I rarely have any company where a nice Front End would be really useful, so it's not a huge loss for me. And I AM afraid that if I try and convert to Pinup Popper it would mess up what is actually working great.
I DID upgrade to 64-bit, and Vpinmame and all that.
Ok thanks I might do this..
The one bummer about 10.8 is that my buttons assigned to num lock keys no longer work. I have to remap them all.
Aw man, that sucks! 🙁
I am a new member. I haven't figured out how to install all this on my PC yet, but there's time, I'll figure it out. Right now I'm too excited with what I see. This blew my mind. All my life I've only been playing Timeshock (20 years) and the other day I started Pinball FX3 and now I see this too. Oh my God...
YEESS!!! It's a wonderful hobby with SO much amazing stuff to see and play!!
Somewhat of a learning curve, to be sure, but well worth it!
Thank you so much for watching Angel!
@@digitalvictory8266 TNX Digital. Greetings from Belgrade.
Just curious...what type of monitor are you using for your playfield?
He's using the Atgames legends pinball machine with it's 32" main screen and 15.6" backbox and the different tables are being run via a gaming pc rig.
@@neillbowers9654 Yes - this!
Great review. I'm adding alot of them. Hoops looked good but when I saw it was a .dif file, I went ahead and passed. As for Defender, I really wanted to like that game, but it is a DRAIN machine. Don't get me wrong. Brilliant re-creation but the game itself is not great. At least in my opinion. Thanks again for this!
All good and fair points my man!!
Leave me your email addy, OK?
Out of curiosity, how are people managing their games from 10.7 to 10.8 When I want to play a table, I don't want to be endlessly figuring out what version plays what table. Appreciate any help and insight into this issue.
I hope that works itself out in the coming months, because as far as I know - that is EXACTLY what I've been doing since I installed 10.8! (meaning some games don't work with 10.8 so I have to manually load them)
It's not a big deal now, since I only have 5 or 6 that use 10.8, but I can see that changing quick!
I’m like you. I’d like to play some of these enhanced games, but I’m afraid that I would crash my system. I’ve invested too many man-hours in gathering my collection (which is close to 1000).
Quick Q, im just getting back into pinball, not looking to build a Vpin cabinet right now, but from what i gather, im able to download VPX 10.8 on my pc, use a Playstation controller, and I can rotate my monitor to portrait and enjoy lotr valinor for free?
@fliw7114 You absolutely should be able to do that. You'll need to use Joy2Key (a program that programs your keystrokes directly to your controller).
I would recommend joining the Facebook group "World of Virtual Pinball" for any assistance, they are great and I've gotten help there several times when I ran into issues. There's also tons of great tutorials on UA-cam.
I'm notoriously non-techy, so I need all the help I can get sometimes.
Virtual Pinball is quite the rabbit-hole. There's nothing easy or quick, but it's SO worth the investment of time and patience - you'll love it!
@@digitalvictory8266 yup. Loved it as a 90s kid, never got to play. Played pinball arcade 10 years ago. Got nostalgia and installed the Williams tables in FX. Less than 2 weeks later, im putting my TV on its side and playing portrait mode. Can't wait to try out Lotr Valinor. Thanks for the awesome content and showing me this!
Do you have a tutorial of how you personally add tables?
No, I'm notoriously non-technical and there are other tutorials online much better than I could do.
That said, the process with VPX tables is pretty much this:
ADDING TABLES:
Forgetting the Legends Pinball part, just on a PC level, here is how my process goes:
1 - Surf VPUniverse, find table I like. I download this at my desktop PC.
2 - download the table, and the backglass (sometimes I do an extra search for the backglass).
3 - After I download them, I unzip them on to a USB drive.
4 - Take USB drive to my game room, and plug into my pinball PC.
5 - I put the table and backglass file (both have to use the exact same name) into the directory: Visual Pinball / Tables
6 - If there is music, it goes in Visual Pinball / Music
Then I double click on the table file and play!
Occasionally, it will require additional tweaking, but that's the exception.
I have great respect for the work VPW does, but it's gotten to the point where their tables are so bloated, half the community can't run them. My cab is literally running a brand new PC, and even I can't run Police Force or Last Action Hero without dialing down the textures... and in the case of Police Force, there's still unacceptable ball stutter. If JP Salas can produce great looking tables that only take up 10MB of space, do we really need 350MB tables? At the very least, I'd love to see alternate versions that are stripped-down a bit so that everyone can play them.
The sarcastic answer is... play the Bigus1 mod or JP Salas versions of those tables then ;-) . The helpful answer is that Niwak just updated VPX 10.8 so that you now have more texture downscaling options. There will also hopefully soon be a guide as to how you need to set up VPX 10.8, your monitor and drivers for best performance. Niwak has completely rewritten large aspects of VPX code including the video syncing code (try the amazing Frame Pacing for the most precise shooting yet in VPX). The recommendations are different than for 10.7. In short;
- no need for Pinaffinity.
- Free-/G-Sync doesn't work in VPX so disable.
- OpenGL is newer and theoretically performs better than the DX version.
- run in windows full-screen (not exclusive)
- put pre-rendered and max framerate on 0.
- use Frame Pacing which adapts best to variable/drops in framerate.
