Why would you be shocked? Is it based off money? There are roughly 2-3 other teams that can potentially match what the Yankees offer him and 1 team that will beat what they offer him and that's the Mets. The amount of entitled Yankee fans is astounding, especially when you've had several premier players in the league DECLINE offers from the Yankees to play elsewhere. You guys have to accept the fact that the game has changed since the days of George Steinbrenner. Teams that have won the WS since 2009 have had a better collective of players and lower payrolls. You can't buy championships like they used to
i can never hate Soto even if he goes to the Mets he's a great player and a outstanding person that's what gets lost people don't understand the human element part.
The scary thing is Cohen is worth 21 Billion to Steinbrenners 4 Billion. You cant hate Soto if he leaves for more money, just like you cant hate Saquon for leaving, Yankees and Giants have their chances.
He's young, and he's a superstar; he doesn't become available that often. If the Yankees are serious about winning a title (even if they don't get it done this year), then it's better to sign him. He's MUCH better than what could be out there within the next 12 years.
Do people not realize that it's the player themselves that has to agree to a deferment? Ohtani can afford to defer because he makes like 60m a year in endorsements. Juan Soto is not in the same boat. He's going to get PAID and he deserves it (as much as any person can deserve grotesque amounts of money anyway)
Are you implying Juan Soto would not be able to AFFORD to defer some of his 600+ million or whatever the final figure is? He could probably defer 90% of it and still live more than comfortably, taking home more than than 99.9% of Americans AFTER the deferral.
Let's say for arguments sake that Soto demands $70m/year. If signing Alonso, Bregman, and Burnes for that same amount was possible (which it might be), would it be more valuable to have Soto or those other 3 guys ?
Who's going to pay him 70 million per year? I wouldn't pay him more then 40M per season for 10 years. Even if he is the World series MVP, he's not worth 70 million. So tell me, who's going to pay him that much money?
Base your offer on reality though. An offer of 40 for 10 is almost a slap in the face given the market, his age, his future potential and current production. If you're going 10 years, you need to be at 50 a year to even be in consideration probably. Personally, I would offer a 15 year deal worth 701 million dollars, and build in opt outs every couple years starting after the 5th year. His past numbers showed him heading towards this, he's been consistently improving, and he has yet to really enter his prime yet. He has next to zero injury history, some I'm perfectly comfortable locking him in for 15 if that's what it takes. And his game is the type that lasts. Players that rely on speed start to fade earlier, power hitters with insane plate vision last a lot longer. Soto will be out there having OBPs around .400 in his late 30s.
I don’t want to hear how Cohen has so much more money, if Steinbrenner can’t afford Soto then sell the team! You own the Yankees one of the most elite franchises in all of sports! If you can’t afford to own the Yankees you need to sell them!
Because of revenue sharing, 13 of the richest teams gave $500 million to the poorest 14 teams in 2023. But I’m tired of the money buys championships arguments. Next time you bump into Steve cohen at your local deli, ask him if money buys championships. Hal is not richest owner in baseball.
What are you talking about? Steve Cohen, LITERALLY has more money than the Steinbrenner family, let alone just Hal. Their families net worth is 3.8 Billion, around 6 times less than the 21.9 Billion Cohen has. Not being able to reasonably spend as much as a guy worth six times what you've got doesn't mean you need to sell the team. If not being able to spend what Steve Cohen can is reason for teams to need to be sold, then get ready for 29 MLB teams to hit the market, and then go unsold, as the list of people capable of spending like Cohen isn't very big.

Well let's play Final Test.. As an example. You get Four multiple choice answers, right? (Giants, Toronto, Mets, Yankees) You eliminate 2 of those choices. Now your down to 2. The toss up would most likely be between Yankees and the Mets. We know Soto likes NY and wants to be in NY because NY is the City with most Dominicans. We know Mets have the deeper pockets but yes he will face getting booed but Yankee fans do understand that and know he is worth it. I think they'll get over it, if that were the case. If the money is right and they can manage to keep Cole then I believe Soto will stay with the Yankees. Unless there is another great pitcher up for grabs I do believe he wants to stay. For a young player such as Soto there's honor and prestige to say you play for the New York YANKESS. These Dominican players coming into the MLB, for them it's a dream. My point is, Money is definitely #1 factor in him making that choice. However, there are also all these other factors mentioned above. Just my 2 cents.
Soto leaves if they win the WS and will take top dollar. If they don't win i think he stays if the money is relatively close. I don't think Yankees offer tops 50 million a year, where Cohen i think will go 60 million a year. My biggest concern as a Met fans is are they gonna spend this off season. If you spend on Soto then you clearly have no option but to go all out and spend. No way we land Soto and Mets don't add big pieces.
Giants are gonna blow their whole load on Soto to try and compete with the dodgers the next 10 years… I don’t see anybody outbidding them if they go all in
ohtani is a global marketing monster. no way soto can compete with ohtani's personality. soto is a great hitter.....period. he will be lucky to get anything near $45m.
Deferring money should be basically banned. It makes the rich even richer, it runs against everything the league is trying to do to create parity in the league. That ohtana deal was a slap in the face
I completely agree. They implemented luxury tax to kinda deter gross overspending, and this totally circumnavigates that and lets the filthy rich teams just spend limitless money. That said, the Yankees fan in me wants the Yankees to take advantage of this and get back to spending a ton lol
the league is not trying to create parity it is tying to make the billionaire owners as much money as possible. If the MLB wanted parity they would have a salary floor at a minimum to force the 2/3rds of owners who spend nothing to actually try and compete.
Soto wont get more then 500 million. Ohtani is a unicorn, The largest contract in baseball history was Mike Trout, and that was an extension. Judge at 360 million, Bryce Harper (who was a similar age to Soto) at 330 million, Seagar at 325 million. Mike Trout was 426.5 million and Mookie was 365 million. To anyone to actually believe that Soto is going to sign the largest contract in MLB history is crazy. Soto will get 13 and 485-490 million TOPS. Anyone who signs him for more than is asking for big trouble. And if the yankees sign him for that they are in trouble. I know Aaron Judge is having another MVP season. But he is 32, he may have 2-3 more years of good production. Then the last 5 years of that will be ugly.
For years Soto has been getting paid tens of millions..This year $36 million plus he'll also bring in a tremendous amount of $$ off the field in a Yankee uniform..HE WONT BE STARVING WITH A DEFERRED DEAL.
Look I understand why ohtani was paid 700 million. But how could you in your right mind say he’s gonna make even more than that? Soto is an all world hitter but he’s not the best fielder. There’s no way he deserves more than 700 from just his bat alone. He’s not even the best hitter on his team. Judge is the better hitter.
No one will ever defer the way Ohtani did. Ohtani is a global superstar, unless someone comes around that’s just as big as Ohtani then yes that player could defer. But to compare Soto and Ohtani in terms of popularity is laughable
Baseball is a sport where give me (6) $100 million players to build a quality team and forget about these utterly ridiculous baseball team killing contracts..You're talking almost twice the money we're paying Judge..You'll be upset when you have weaknesses you can't afford to fix..
the max id give Soto is 10/400m. Ohtani only got so much is because he is a pitcher as well. but a lot relies on this world series. Scott boras being his agent I feel like yanks won’t resign. Plus if they resign they will have to say goodbye to a few key people (Torres, Holmes, kahnle, Rizzo) & verdugo but he should walk after season anyway
So you're saying you don't want Soto then. Because 10 years at 40 per isn't even in the vicinity of what he will get and what he's worth based on the market. Ohtani was signed as a two way player, but he also wasn't 26 at the time. Soto will be like 5 years younger than Shohei was when he inked the deal. He has next to zero injury history, as opposed to Ohtani who has had two major I juries to his pitching arm. Soto isn't getting 70 a year, but he will get offers that exceed 10 years. At least 12, likely he gets multiple 15 year offers. Mine would be 46 per over 15 years, giving him one million more in total value than the 700 million Ohtani signed for. But honestly, if I were Hal, I would pay whatever it took. He's TOO great a player and so obviously is a perfect fit in pinstripes and at the stadium.
Id rather have (6) $100 million players and build a team around Judge than a single $650 million player eating up a ton of salary preventing you from filling other weaknesses due to the tax threshold..The penalties are severe and there not all financial at all.
Maybe yall just overthinking abt paying soto, i think its a no brainer they will pay him!! thats why i miss the father soto would of been had his extension!
of course any team can defer any player’s contract down to the league minimum … as allowed per the CBA. will soto and scott boras allow this ? absolutely not. soto will not make 60M a year from endorsements like ohtani and frankly boras would discourage deferments bc it would bring the present-day value of the contract down. boras wants soto’s next contract to break records.
Boras can discourage all he wants as I am sure Ohtani's agent did because deferments means they the agent likely makes less based on present value of money. But Boras has to listen to what Soto wants and we have no clue what that is. If he is offered an Ohtani type deal with significant deferments and likes the idea of basically having a retirement plan from the Yankees till he is 60 while he can win more rings Boras will agree to that deal because he is legally required to.
@@brianhalligan9268 that’s correct. I am just saying the chances boras will lead soto to sign a heavily deferred deal are very low and the chances soto wants a heavily deferred deal are also very low. soto hired boras for a simple reason … to make the most amount of money possible and with little to no deferred money. if soto wanted a heavily deferred contract he prob wouldn’t need boras for that. will I eat crow if soto gets boras to agree with him on a heavily deferred deal ? yes. is it likely to happen ? based on precedent no. harper and seager’s deals had no deferrals. same as most other boras clients … rodon, cole, correa, kris bryant, mr hollywood lifestyle who hates baseball and rots in anaheim. the last boras guy to take significant deferrals was scherzer and that was back in 2015.
Soto ain’t even all that! Good luck to any team to sign him to that 600mil cause he ain’t no Ohtani that’s gonna make all that money back and more!!! Gonna be a bust just like when he was with the Padres!
The Yankees profit (not revenue, profit) is in the several hundreds of millions per year. After this year? It will SKYROCKET. This ride alone could pay for Soto. They do not need financial help or trickery, and they can take the tax hits.
Let rizzo (20), torres(14), holmes(6), verdugo(8) go and you get back $48 million in payroll. you are already paying soto $31 million. add $40 of the $48 million you saved from those four guys and keep him if Mets or Dodgers offer him $600-700 million. pay dominguez, oswaldo cabrera, oswald peraza, ben rice, and volpe minimum wage and trust them to compliment judge, stanton, soto and jazz.
I believe with Rizzo, it is a club option with a buyout. I may be remembering wrong, but I believe the savings with buying him out is 11 million. For what he's done in the postseason, the fact we don't have a legit replacement, and with 11 million, I don't know how good a first baseman we get to replace him. I would keep Rizzo. I would offer Gleyber at least a qualifying offer to get the supplemental pick if he signs somewhere else. I'm content to keep him for one year if that's what happens. With just Holmes and Verdugo, we have 14 million, plus Russia team option is for less than he made this year I believe. So that's another million or two maybe. Soto himself makes what? 32? So figure that gives them about 48 million, just with losing Holmes and Verdugo, and the savings with Rizzo. They can move other pieces and free up a bunch more I think.
If Steinbrenner doesn't sign Soto, he should sell the team. Pure and Simple. There are two teams in baseball that cannot overspend, they will always get it back and a lot more. That's the Yankees and the Dodgers. The Dodgers realize it, but Steinbrenner is too scared of losing his inheritance money, If he's too scared to invest in a sure thing like Soto, he needs to sell the club to someone who understands how to run the Yankees. And if he doesn't sign Soto, I'm gone from the Yankees. Who wants to sit through another fifteen years of nothing before winning another title - this with the most iconinc franchise in sports in the world's biggest market. If Steinbrenner doesn't sign Soto, then he'll find that he's lost half the value of his franchise because it will prove, once and for all, that there is nothing special or iconic about the Yankees. They might as well be the Cleveland Indians or the Mets at that point. And, in any event, either Steinbrenner or hopefully his replacement needs to get rid of that incompetent loser Cashman who is clueless as to how to take advantage of all of the Yankees innate advantages.
I understand he declined the nationals deal 400 plus million 10 years! But on the Yankees you’re a superstar and you have more sponsors coming! Plus he has a chance to win most of the time! I think he likes being a yankee that will make a difference!
Yea keep on moving the needle with these player salaries. Baseball is already a dying sport. Let’s make unaffordable 10’years from now for the average fan.
let me get this straight - now that the yankees are no longer the wealthiest team in baseball ala George, it's not fair that cohen owns the mets. are the yankees really crying about money???
Would love for Yankees to sign Soto.. but I'm not losing sleep over it. Yankees don't need 3 DHs. Soto stinks in RF... an easy RF to play in Yankee stadium. He is an elite hitter.. but this 750M talk needs to be put into perspective.
seriously do people think this guys made the money he made by putting all of his eggs in one basic? He is not going to blow a billion of his personal dollars to sign a guy that is not how it works and the taxes and penalties effect Cohen the same way they would Hal and it makes running a team harder. Will he compete sure but these people who claim he is going to pay Soto 70 mil a year no deferments over 15 years are insane.

Sotos contract will begin with a 6 and be for anywhere between 12-15 years
Writers know absolutely nothing! Yankees cannot let Soto walk! Especially to their rival.
He'll still be in New York just in a Mets uniform!
Id rather have (6) $100 million players and build a team around Judge than a single $650 million player eating up a ton of salary preventing you from filling other weaknesses due to the tax threshold..The penalties are severe and there not all financial at all.
@@charlesfriscia7236 I can't agree with you more honestly
Maybe yall just overthinking abt paying soto, i think its a no brainer they will pay him!! thats why i miss the father soto would of been had his extension!
No. Soto will go to another team next year. But only if the NYY can't win the WS... Soto will never accept a cheap contract.
The 3 stooges larry, moe, and don the drunk😂
Ill be in hal's shoes. I volenteer. Rich ppls problems. Raising my hand.

of course any team can defer any player’s contract down to the league minimum … as allowed per the CBA. will soto and scott boras allow this ? absolutely not. soto will not make 60M a year from endorsements like ohtani and frankly boras would discourage deferments bc it would bring the present-day value of the contract down. boras wants soto’s next contract to break records.
Someone MUST velcro your shoes for you if you're saying things that stupid.
Talking about deferred money already 😂😂
The Yankees profit (not revenue, profit) is in the several hundreds of millions per year. After this year? It will SKYROCKET. This ride alone could pay for Soto. They do not need financial help or trickery, and they can take the tax hits.
😂😂😂😂😂U ain’t tha Dodgers😂😂😂😂it’s over in 5 cuz
The Dodgers realize it, but Steinbrenner is too scared of losing his inheritance money,
If he's too scared to invest in a sure thing like Soto, he needs to sell the club to someone who understands how to run the Yankees.
And, in any event, either Steinbrenner or hopefully his replacement needs to get rid of that incompetent loser Cashman who is clueless as to how to take advantage of all of the Yankees innate advantages.
i doubt Soto is going to defer his money he wants to cash in period
Mets need to be discontinued they are a embarrassment to baseball
They cnt let him go regardless
They hating
For gods sake sotos good, hes nowhere near 6-700m good.
It's the world we live in
I understand he declined the nationals deal 400 plus million 10 years! But on the Yankees you’re a superstar and you have more sponsors coming! Plus he has a chance to win most of the time! I think he likes being a yankee that will make a difference!
It wasn't 400 for 10, they offered, I believe, a 14 year deal, and the AAV was low 30s if I remember correctly.
He acts like cohens entire fortune is allocated for the Mets lol jv mentality
I have been calling the Mets the JV team forever. Thank you brudda 😊 gimmicks galore
@@JohnMato-b4q signing with the nets in your prime is like volunteering to be in the cover of madden lol
Like deciding your entire life will be dating a bunch of beautiful people but only ever getting the go sign from the third base coach twice.
@@snerdterguson huh? lol cool man
seriously do people think this guys made the money he made by putting all of his eggs in one basic? He is not going to blow a billion of his personal dollars to sign a guy that is not how it works and the taxes and penalties effect Cohen the same way they would Hal and it makes running a team harder. Will he compete sure but these people who claim he is going to pay Soto 70 mil a year no deferments over 15 years are insane.
Soto isnt going to defer money living in NYC
Everything don says is from a place that assumes the Mets actually matter to stars
Soto, Alonso, Vientos, and Alvarez in the Lineup and the Mets can get better pitching nobody will beat them..Just send the trophy to Citi Field
L.A Dodgers 💪 🥳 🎉 🪅
Nervous ass caller. Yikes.
Pay Soto
Oh now they talking about deferring. Month ago They were so giddy about Soto to get more money than Ohtani per year 😂. And now they trying to adopt Ohtani’s salary deferral method. Yankee fans are pathetic
@@jinlondzale4191 you aren’t a met fan are you lmao? Cause no team in history has been more publicly thirsty for another teams player ever. You better hope all he wants is your daddy’s money cause bring your dog to the stadium day and chicken fingers ain’t gonna match monument park my guy.
@@rayfonseca6292 sir, he’s only there on a 1 year trade. He not really yours lol so Mets have every right to peruse him now. And Dominicans are known to risk it all for a sugar daddy like Cohen.
Mets suck lol they couldn’t win like us 🤷🏻♂️
Soto Is Not Signing Unless He Offered 600+ Thats His Target & He Gonna Get It.
Look it's a different world in 5 years soto contract would be seen as a bargain! He's 26 years old! Pay the kid his money and you know what go get another starting pitcher amd closer aswell! Time for a dynasty! This booth of guys are so leveraged by being payed from front office it's makes listening to there perspectives laughable! If u don't pay soto 600 mill the pay two top arms 300 mill a piece n try to find a bat who can knock 35 - 40 hrs to replace soto male it make sense don't not replace him. But then not get better..u can loose soto but u have to improve the team! By doing so
Any fan who things “being in monument park” is better than than money is a damn fool. 😂 are people that delusional? “It’s an honor to play for a team that has no personally and is considered to be the most boring team in baseball” lol
Calling the team with 2 of the 3 best players, the hardest hitter since they tracked how hard balls were hit, one of the best starting pitchers of the last 20 years and a manager who has famously hilarious sound bites and ejections, "the most boring team" tells me you've never actually watched them. They just got done playing one of the most entertaining playoff series in years.
🤣 trying to be like the dodgers
Soto MVP? Be real. The Dodgers are in six, and Betts will be the MVP. Soto will sign a big contract, and he will be a second Rendon.
