In 1977, I was 11 years old when Star Wars came out. I sat in the front row, center seat (which I did for a lot of movies I saw then). Seeing that Star Destroyer fly in over my head got me hooked. From that point, it didn't matter what it was- toys, comics, cards, magazines- if it had Star Wars labeled on it, I tried to buy it. And then, I discovered NPR radio, and on there, I was able to hear music from John Williams, and then, the radio production of Star Wars. Every Sunday night, I would sit by the radio and listen to each episode (this was broken down into sections). I wouldn't get a lot of sleep and had to go to school the next day, but I didn't care- it was Star Wars.

Thanks for sharing the memories. I was 6 when I saw A New Hope in the theater with my family...and then 8, with Empire, and 10 with Jedi. Good memories I’m glad we have that experience that was once in a lifetime. I remember the entire audience yelling, clapping, and standing up clapping throughout the movie because the effects was like nothing they had seen before. This is the first time I’ve heard about this radio show and it’s like Star Wars is new all over again. ❤️ from Austin

In 1977, I was 7 when it came out. When the Star Destroyer flew over I was utterly gobsmacked, and I've never been as awed by a film scene till Two Towers came out 25 years later.

I was 27; spent the morning adopting our first daughter then we (wife & I) took her to the movie that afternoon, a $1 matinee. Same, seeing that star destroyer seeming to take minutes to pass over had me totally hooked, at least for the original 3.

Some of it is directly based on cut scenes from Star Wars, like the "dark smear on the side of a canyon wall" bit. I'd say the movie was perfectly paced and did well to cut a lot of the backstory, but the backstory stuff works really well for the radio format.

Though not likely to happen...if ever a "a remake" of 'STAR WARS: A New Hope' was produced and were to see "the light of day" as a 'totally brand new' film, this radio drama would be perfect for "the dialogue" of the screenplay...! "New actors"..."New art direction"...all "presented" in breathtaking TECHNICOLOR and a stereoscopic 3-D "version" of Super and/or Ultra Panavision 70mm on "gigantic" IMAX screens in cinemas "so equipped" would be unimaginably awesome...!!! (Did I neglect "to mention" 16 track stereophonic sound also...LOL 😂...?) And of course "the same" standards and 'production values' would "apply" to the radio dramas for 'STAR WARS: The Empire Strikes Back' and for 'STAR WARS: The Return of the Jedi'...😊...! (...'We' can "dream"...can 'We' not...?...!!! 😇...).

EDIT: Since this comment continues to get traction, here's a few clarifications/updates.
    1. He was not in the movies. Just this radio drama.
    2. I did end up showing him this. He seemed surprised anybody still cared about it. But he's also very happy someone did.
    3. I'm sorry some of you don't believe me. I know people lie on the internet all the time, so I don't blame you entirely. But those of you who are taking my word for it, thanks so much for the kind words.

@@Cheepchipsable His voice acting for television cartoons and video games and more seemed to grow into something huge over time. I particularly liked him in the Star Wars radio dramas that aired on NPR; shame he couldn't do ROTJ. He's always good, always memorable. I still enjoy him in the episode "Bellhops" from The Ren and Stimpy Show.
And it's funny-- he would've never auditioned for Luke Skywalker had his 1974 TV show, a short-lived western sitcom called The Texas Wheelers, not been cancelled after eight episodes. It got creamed in prime time because it was on opposite The Rockford Files. Hamill played Doobie, the younger son of the Wheeler family, a high school boy ... even though he was 23 at the time. Hamill has said, about the show's demise: “I was devastated. I thought, 'I’ll never get a part that good again'." :) Fate sometimes screws up your plans because something much better is waiting on your path.

Hey, this is incredibly good. It has the feel of Star Wars, the vibe of the movie, but much richer and filled with detail and back story. It does the little things I wish the movies today would do, like toning down the silliness of droids . Star Wars is best when it balances whimsy with the more serious approach that works for adults. I remember hearing about this radio play back when I was a kid (who loved all things Star Wars), but I lived out in the country, and we didn't get reception from the nearest NPR station. How wonderful to finally hear it, nearly four decades later. My only complaint is the voice for Darth Vader - wow, I could have done a better take than that! Still, this is so well done.

But this was a BIG DEAL back then, and I remember my friends and I talking about it with anticipation and then discussing it at school after it aired. It was talked about a lot and advertised all over the place. It's awesome when fans discover this and Empire. Jedi doesn't have the same bite to it, as it wasn't made until 1996, closer to Phantom Menace than the actual Return of the Jedi. The radio serials were made with the full cooperation of George Lucas, who, in exchange for a dollar each, sold the rights to KUSC-FM, the public radio affiliate at his alma mater, the University of Southern California (USC). Lucas also permitted the use of original sound effects and music from the films.

In all honesty, I never really felt anything when Alderaan was destroyed in the film. But here... _damn._ It’s bad enough that this time around we’ve actually spent time on it and had development between Leia and her father. But even this scene in isolation probably hit me ten times harder than the film did. Ann Sachs’ performance is devastating to listen to, to the point I could barely concentrate on the scene afterward.

And the way Luke goes on a rant about Darth Vader, etc. at 4:00:06. They almost never brought up how Luke felt about Vader "murdering" his father (and all the other horrible stuff he did) in the movies. I think that's some of Mark Hamill's best acting. So emotional.

Interesting, that Brock Peters had a part in Battlestar Galactica, then went and voiced Vader, and then, played as Admiral Cartwright in both Star Trek: The Voyage Home and The Undiscovered Country, before becoming Joseph Sisko in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Seems Brock Peters was an actor who loved science fiction.
