  • This video demonstrates the cuff down spiral sock toe, sometimes referred to as a star toe or round toe (other sock toes go by those names, as well). This toe has 4 decreases per round, evenly distributed, which forms the spiral. It does not have to be grafted to finish it off. The video provides an overview of the construction, how to know when to start the toe, how to knit it, and how to finish it off. In addition, tips for how to read your knitting as you are knitting the toe are given, as well as how to compensate for errors.

    I was so happy to see you go through the stitches twice in the srawstring toe. Looking at end-of- year lost and found in an elementary school office, I observed that virtually all of the discarded mittens and hats-- both machine and handknitted-- failed at top of hat, tip of mitten, tip of mitten thumb. It's such cheap insurance, and not only on sock toes.

    I am so glad you compensate for mistakes and don't rip back, finally I can lose the guilt- it happens to me quite often.

      If someone's eyes are close enough to your sock toe to see a mistake like that (and remark upon it), you can kick them in the face! ;-)

    I've just tried this toe method in my current sock knit, and it is easy to do, and very comfortable! Visually, I prefer a conventional grafted toe, but this fits better and feels better, so it has become my new go-to method. Thanks, Roxanne!

    Checking out your video (as I always do on my day off) and here I am knitting a pair using Régia Pairfect yarn designed by Arne & Carlos. There is minimal info on the ball band, so I chose your mock short row heel, & Kate Atherley’s barn toe as I have her sock book. Thank you so much, having followed you I knew how to calculate my toe decreases to fit my son’s long 3” toes, based on my row gauge. You are the best, & happy Thanksgiving!

    Your toe sample would make a cute mini hat for the Xmas tree. Just needs a pom. I've still not done a star toe yet. I always worry it will feel weird. I didn't think about it until now, but that's probably why I lean towards toe up socks...so I don't have to Kitchener the toe lol.

    I think I would like to try this method; thanks for sharing. I use this method on simple plain mittens. My concern on a sock would be if you feel any ridge on the bottom of the toes where there is one of the decreases?

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  2 роки тому +1

      I have never had a problem with any decreases on the bottom of my sock heels or toes, but that's me. The only way for you to know if it will be comfortable to you and your feet is to try it and see what you think.

    Could this be used for an afterthought heel - anything to avoid grafting!

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  2 роки тому

      It can, but I can't offer any specific advice, yet, on how to get the best fit. I'm currently knitting a pair of socks using this for both the toe and the a heel, but I did add a short gusset before and after, to improve the fit. I'm using it as an insta-thought heel, rather than an afterthought heel (so called because you work it when you come to the heel, rather than coming back to knit it after the rest of the sock is done).

      @@RoxanneRichardson Thank you. Your videos are so helpful - I look forward to the next sock info. After I asked the question I decided to do the spiral toe with the drawstring finish on the socks I am currently knitting - I tried it on my longsuffering husband and he declared it very comfortable. So Hurray! and thanks again.

    I have trouble with my decreases not on the right spots when doing my toe. I switch from
    9 inch circular to magic loop but it seems I mess up my decreases on where they are placed. Any help
    Appreciated.

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  5 місяців тому +1

      You might want to focus on reading the location of your previous decreases. In addition, divide your round for ML so that the last stitch of each half of the round will end with a k2tog.

    • @eileenmacdonald3774
      @eileenmacdonald3774 5 місяців тому

      @@RoxanneRichardson yes I do divide them but they end up in the front and back of sock instead of the sides. The decreases are fine after the gusset it is when start the toe decreases they are not matching up.

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  5 місяців тому

      @@eileenmacdonald3774 This video is for a spiral sock toe, where decreases are spaced evenly in the round, and decreases are worked until just a few remain. If you are looking for working mirrored decreases on each half of the round, that is a wedge toe, with the decreases ending when 1/3 of the sts remain, which you graft together. The decreases are placed with a k2tog after the first st of each half of the round and an ssk before the last stitch of each half. Some sock patterns place the beginning of round at the center of the sole. When you divide for ML, you need to arrange the sts so that you have your halves divided with the instep on one half of the round and the sole on the other. The BOR will then be in the middle of the needle holding the sole sts.

    Hi, Rox. I'm a relatively new knitter, three or so years in. I haven't yet knitted a sock, though I would like to. One of the things that makes me hesitate is that I have short toes that are pretty much squared off. Socks (and shoes, don't get me started) tend to assume that a foot tapers in a rather conventional way. My feet don't. My question is: Is there a knitted sock toe that is better suited for an, essentially, squared off foot? Many thanks for your advice.

    • @RoxanneRichardson
      @RoxanneRichardson  2 роки тому +2

      Most sock toes can be modified in one way or another to suit different toe lengths/shapes. The round toe, and this toe both work well for many toe shapes. What you might need to do is eliminate some of the plain rounds to shorten the toe, in order to end up with a sock toe that is close in length to your actual toes. In last week's TechTues video, I walked through this process using my brother's large foot circumference, but short toes, as an example. Most of my sock toe videos explain how to modify the toe to fit a specific length.

      Hi Jo, I knitted my first socks with Rox's Ravelry August Sock KAL. She goes through all the modifications, for heels and toes, I would recommend it highly. Before that I couldn't get the rib over my ankle and gave up.
