I went from 4" exhaust tips to 5"x 12" double wall exhaust tips and got a deeper and slightly louder sound. It depends on what you are doing with your exhaust system.
When I took the car for the mid muffler delete, I had them weld the pipe so that the tips actually stick out a bit more and you can see the carven logo. When I mounted them myself, they were more recessed and the logo was not visible. Sounds great with the delete. X pipe might make it a little better.
I agree 100% with your lost sound analysis. I have my mid muffler deleted and added these tips a couple of days ago. Just went for a drive and clearly noticed a sound difference compared to having the OEM tips. The crackle and pops are much more tame but are still present. On hard pulls it's kinda hard to tell if there is any sound lost. I'm okay with this because I know I'm pissing off my neighbor during cold starts in the morning and this mornings cold start was not nearly as loud as it was in the past. All in all, the look of these tips far outweighs the sound lost in my opinion.
Well mine was before the mid muffler delete. Since I’ve done the delete and put some miles on it, I think it sounds amazing. Never heard stock tips with the mufflers deleted, but I enjoy the carven tips now that the mids are gone!

Put them on my 393. Killed the sound, especially the snap crackle and pop.
I did the mid muffler delete and it sounds great now!
