J.S. Bach: Partita in A Minor, Allemande BWV 1013; David Tayler, archlute

- The allemande from the Partita in A Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach, performed on the archlute by David Tayler. The music is sourced from an undated manuscript; the handwriting suggests that the copyist worked on one of the copies of the violin partitas as well. The title is marked "Solo p[our une] flûte traversière par J. S. Bach." It seems clear that the work was intended for the traverso, or baroque flute, but it is tempting to consider that the work could have been played in Bach's time on the recorder, lute, violin or cello. The style of the opening allemande is similar to several of Bach's preludes, and contains some of his finest work as a composer.
Many years ago, I heard my lute teacher Lucy Cross playing some beautiful music as I walked through the door. The music was unlike anything I had ever heard. "I'm arranging some Bach for the lute," she said. This video is dedicated to her memory.
#Bach #Partita
I was almost finished with this exquisite performance when I suddenly realized that the camera, for once, was not dashing about and creating vast distractions. Thank you!
Agree about the camera!

Beautiful. Thank you, Mr. Tayler.
You're very welcome
This sounds so fluid and natural, making flutists jealous!
The perks of not having breathing trouble while playing ...
@@blauespony1013 Looks like circular breathing, hehe.
Tempo is just perfect. Congratulations.
iedere dag luister en kijk ik ,naar deze prachtige klanken het geeft rust en vrede
Bach, the composer of everything...
the archlute sound is dreamy. very beautiful.
sweet water: utterly hypnotic!
Also, as an old folkie guitar player with tendinitis, I notice that despite the very wide fretboard on that huge lute, this
particular piece does not seem to require a large enough reach to cause discomfort on the musician's
left hand.
Seriously, this is great artistry, a mature, accomplished performer, giving great joy through his music. Thank you.
David: I must compete with fullsome praise. A version of this music also exists for solo flute, which version I have played. You do the better of the two musical justice. Moreover, other Baroque composers have written a text this good: Yet that is another discussion. MANY THANKS, SIR! Your clear love of music has educated many--a contribution to civilization!
Absolutely wonderful! I had never heard the archlute before--Mr. Tayler is a master musician!
You can tell he’s feeling the music and I’m living for it 💕🙏🏻💕
I liked the way you play so much that I looked you up and now I’ve downloaded your album
Thank you!
Great! I closed my eyes and found myself lost in the music. I guess, I can't give a better compliment to composer Bach and the artist David Tayler.
I did not even know that something such as an archlute exists. Fascinating!
Greetings from Austria!
Thank you!
The Allemandes of Bach ,on Lute ,Violin and so on,are superb:)
Splendid. Majestic. Captivating.
Very elegant instrument, beautiful playing.
This music is haunting, enchanting, if you will. Classical music like this is a time machine; you can't be anywhere else except where it was originally conceived.
Absolutely beautiful! Thank you
So beautiful... Thank you... a lot!
Magnifico!
Mesmerizing...! So beautiful!
Wonderful music and playing. Thanks!
You can play Bach music on any instrument, and it will always sound beautiful. There have been more prolific composers, but nobody had the insight and mastery of music he had.
Great performance. Thumbs up for the gripping material on the lap! :D
+Luca Simoncini Even on Stylophone?
Dafydd Owen-Ellis Yeah. Even on a didjeridoo. :D
I love to see someone try to play Bach on a didjeridoo!
Luca Simoncini:Who was more prolific than Bach? Didn't he write something like 14 pages of music for every day of his life?
Telemann
Absolutely wonderful!
sublime! thank you for posting.
Exquisite, refined and extraordinary elevation! Alluring melody!
What an excellent Player - absoluteley great
I can only imagine what it sounds like in person. From here its hauntingly beautiful, a lament or prayer with very soothing passages.
That was beautiful! Mr. David Tayler just inspired me to try this piece on a regular guitar.
Beautiful, thank you.
beautiful sound☼
Bellísimo ! No conocia este intrumento. Realmente hermoso y el Maestro es increíble.
It's wonderful to listen this version even though it was composed for traverso ... and it's a real pleasure to play this piece on a Traverso quite a Zen awakening
Великолепные произведения в великолепном исполнении. Спасибо.
Brilliant performance.
The physical reality of magnificence portrayed through song.. Compelling, to say the very least. Thank you for your excellent skill, sir!
Je bespeelt een heerlijk instrument, dank je David !
en Bach is altijd welkom....
Precioso instrumento y bellísima ejecución. Saludos desde la Ciudad de México!
Flawless!
Only Bach, the greatest composer of all time to make such out of the ordinary world music. And the player is a virtuous one. Thanks for the upload.
When I've played this on flute I've chosen a tempo way slower than flutists usually use, and it's brought out the depth of Bach's musical heart much better; the tempo here is similar to mine, it's a thrill to hear such meaningful expression in it --- thank you!
Thanks so much!
Disagree. It's beautiful music, but simply too slow.
Don't know why musicians feel compelled to alter Bach's tempi to extremes.
Ton Koopman is way too fast, like he's driving a coach and horses to oblivion.
Why??
I think it is different with every instrument the archlute sounds better at a slow tempo because you have all those extra strings vibrating but on a flute you don't have that so you have to speed it up to keep it from being musically boring.
I play this song at twice the tempo, it sounds more chippy and is more fun!
@@ericavalos100 Glad you enjoy it like that, but fun isn't my personal goal in this piece. I love the profundity and power I sense as I play it --- like Rostropovich on the cello.
I am lost in tears
amazing as always.
Beautiful!
Thank you!
just great playing and understanding Bach
Beautiful, David!
Magnífico maestro
This is just absolutely great
Enjoyed it.
Sublime♥ Thank you♥
Enchanting.
Beautiful ( instrument and playing)
Sounds like a guitar and harp in one during this performance.
Che belleza! Maraviglioso
Прекрасное исполнение!!!!
Спасибо.
Very nice, thank you.
Bravissimo Maestro! THANK YOU!
My pleasure.
This is beautiful
David thanks you.
So soothing
The soud is amazing 👍👍
Sublime!!!
Divine sounding
Maestro Tayler, who plays this istrument this way not only has music and the science of music in his heart and brain but feels
the life and human nature as only a few persons in the world can understand. Alberto.
What is name this guitar? Please
Poor Boy
It is an archlute ( from the ancient theorbo) , of whom Maestro Tayler is a superb interpreter. Hallo Poor Boy ! If you are listening this music you know a lot about music! Alberto Tiby.
It is all sublime, but the ring of the instrument at the end is supernal.
Yo, my boy David shreds.
beautiful
Великолепно.
Amazing!
This is the ONLY VERSION of this piece, played on a multi-stringed instrument, that totally makes sense. This allemande of Bach should remain a solo piece, except for this guy and his lute.
Excelente
A lovely melody. Awesome instrument. Distinguished player.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
¡Bravo!
Bravo sir.
Geweldig!
I love Heavy Metal and I love this
perfekte tempo
So beautiful. I wondered what this instrument was. Why isn't there more music recorded of this?
melodia involvente que mexe com a mente
Lovely! Brian Haley
wundervoll.
heavenly.
such a beautiful piece in the song and the way he plays from his movements and facial expressions theres an emotional rollercoaster its begins a bit sad then slowly lightens up and suddenly it falls back into a lonely place it rises again steadily he feels warmth and comfort when playing he acknowledges the song and it's meaning seeing it stands as a reminder that we are not all alone his expressions shift from down to cheery and complete love for the music and the memories the song brings and the nostalgic sounds of his echoing past ..
I agree wonderful interpretation
Тонкая, добрая, духовная красота мелодии..
Thank you! You are very kind.
Bravo.
Buena interpretación Bach es Bach .Moltó grachili.
Beautifully played, and the instrument sounds wonderful. Is the radiussed fretboard standard on the archlute?
+John Woodman By the time of Bach, you certainly see camber of 2mm or so on some instruments, but with lutes it's always hard to say because many are not in original condition.
thanks!
Beuatiful
I love the music of all the great composers, like Johann Sebastian Bach, to mention just a few.
gwalaus hysterical.
I want one!
Mermerizing.. im guessing there is a reverb effect on it to make it sound like he is playing in a stone cathedral.
Fantastic! Also, I keep tripping out looking at the neck of the instrument.
Great!
Thank you.
Magnífico
Thank you, Diego.
Your teacher would be very proud.
Thank you, she was very inspiring.
Awesome instrument , must be hard to carry around ? I really like its smooth sound :)
Caeleb.
Yes, God
❤❤❤Beautiful ❤❤❤
Thank you!
Sounds beautiful. Is that natural reverb / natural resonance of the instrument or is it reverb added post-production?
