Can Duke be saved, will he get the treatment of Wolfenstein: The New Order/DOOM 2016 or is it too late for him?
Get LGR to voice him for the reboot tho
Nobody can replace Jon St. John.
Duke could be only saved only if he would land in hands of some competent developer, not Gearbox.
Well, that's up to him. I think Jon St. John is 75 percent of Duke's character. In my opinion, Duke Nukem without Jon is like Star Wars without John Williams.
They can when the guy doesn't sound like he has the passion for the character!
+Indeimaus As long as it's the current Gearbox managing Duke, I have my doubts :/
wow.. this is tempting... I've played the original Atomic edition for the last 20 years and I still play it today using eduke. I have played every map hundreds of times.. Duke 3d is like a world I have lived part of my life in. The most tempting part about this is the new maps...
In cases like these, where you want the game but don't want to support the business practices around it, I find it is best to just buy the game later in a sale. Companies care the most about the sales in the first week or day. This way you can still kinda give 'em the middle finger without resorting to piracy.
The new maps are a real to play through! Shame that so much of the rest of the package is disappointing, but hey, if anything it'll be worth grabbing on sale just for that new episode.
Well John St. John admitted he didn't like doing the new voice lines. Apparently there were a lot more that were horrible and too meme-heavy.
We're talking about the same company that put skyrim "arrow to le knee xD" jokes in bordermeme 2 here.
Does he actually fucking say "Bazinga" because I think I might vomit.
GovernorVentura
To be fair, Id also put le arrow to the knee in Doom 2016 and it was every bit as jarring and stupid.
I fucking hated the the arrow to the knee thing.
Rave Raptor This. I recently met the guy and we brought up the topic of this game. He told me how the new lines he voiced sounded really different and not something duke would say. Lol yea he mentioned how cringy it felt to say "bazinga" and all these other terrible "memes"
Fun fact: At the time of this comment, LGR's review video has more views than the official trailer.
Sounds about right.
Gearbox didn't market this for shit, and I didn't know it was coming out until a week ahead of time.
I didn't know it existed until today.
fun fact you don't talk to me anymore
It still does. What a fucking joke.
I just learned this existed.
"Developer commentary lead by Randy Pitchford"
Ha Ha Ha.
Well, he was part of 3D Realms back in the day and was one of the devs for Duke3D and Shadow Warrior.
@Sam Wittsell having Randy Pitchford doing commentary for Duke 3D is like having American McGee doing the same for Doom. It's just not the same, he worked in Duke but George Broussard and Richard Gray were at the helm.
Besides, fuck Randy Pitchford.
@@pip5528 He was as part of 3D realms as John Romero took part in making Doom.
Made 3 or 4 maps and took al the credit.
@@icecold1805 Well, Randy Pitchford only started some levels. He never actually finished any. Other devs finished the Duke3D and SW levels he started. Then again, he didn't finish Aliens: Colonial Marines either, did he? Heh.
@Something something old meme The gameplay of Doom comes from before it's own existence, and if any single individual should take credit for the inception of the FPS genre, should be Carmack, not Romero, not by a long shot. And he didn't even work in Quake! He barely participated on the process, too busy living a luxurious life and sabotaging ID from the inside as he was planning to steal some key employees to found his own company, Ion Storm, arguing that ID didnt know how to do things. He then went ahead, made a single game (finally a game he trully deserves all credit for) and it was such a failure he was forever push out of the videogame industry, as he should have always been.
Customer unfriendly tactics: Gearbox in a nutshell.
yes... get FitMC to voice duke
Disappointing business practice from Gearbox but no surprise. Thanks for confirming my cynicism, Randy Salespitch...
I actually tried to think kindly of Gearbox. I'm not even a Duke fan, but I know bullshit when I see it. World Tour's my tipping point, Gearbox can "Eat shit and die" for all I care.
Three words, Aliens Colonial Marines...
DrIvanRadosivic Even after Gearbox's efforts of salvaging what's left of the game's rotten corpse, Colonial Marines is still one of the worst shooters ever made.
Mint Jeffer
Dude stop complaint it’s 20 bucks...
Gearbox has really become a shit-tier company.
another thing the Megaton Edition had over World Tour was the expansions and mod support.
Well, it had support for maps. It couldn't handle custom CON files at all, I believe.
EDuke32 is the best version around when it comes to modding support. They even extended the scripting language.
You also got the full original in dosbox with it, so you could run whatever mods you wanted.
People still play online withe EDuke32?
Darrark Well, only the ones that don't require EDuke32... which is most modern mods. :P
+DaVince21 There are few modded maps in Megaton Edition's workshop like Dukecraft but that's about it.
If they do a reboot, it should start from the beginning, with Duke fighting Doctor Proton. Way too much focus on the Cycloids in the game's lifespan I think.
The Doctor Who Cloned Me 2: Electric Boogaloo.
"Time to chew ass and kick bubble gums" ~Gearbox Software
"And I'm all outta ass!"
the fact that Duke Nukem's right were handed to Gearbox is the day when this series fate got thrown down the pit imho
im pretty sure that alot of people have that opinion since walmart reduced the price of "the duke game that shall not be named" down to five dollars the last time i saw it there
Gearbox used to be pretty good. What happened to them?
Only good thing Gearbox did was Half-Life: Opposing Forces
I don't know it you were aware, but Duke was well and truly in trouble long before Gearbox got the rights.
well Gearbox certainly helped to that with their shitty game
They should have made a full on expansion / sequel to this game. Considering making that type of game now is "low budget" and "easy", compared to fully fletched modern games. They could have used same engine or just updated lighting as it already did, then all ALL NEW episodes, enemies, weapons, locations etc. No simple colour swapping. Take advantage of modern system by making some enemies and explosions etc bigger and badder, more gore, more crazy. It would have been awesome.
I know your comment is 4 years old at this point but it was such a missed opportunity that they did not do what you said considering that at this point they could have even recruited people from the modding scene and simply have given out a brief to what they wanted from each level.
They should've really got you in as a design consultant or at least a play tester
Sorry, but it really bugs me when people say this kind of thing. LGR is awesome! But Clint isn't a video game developer, nor is it likely the ones working on this game are unaware of the issues present in the product they shipped.
Seriously WTF is going on with removing 'red crosses' from ALL the health packs in games? First they did it with XBLA DOOM, now with Duke Nukem. Did Red Cross trademark the thing and start threatening folks with lawsuits?
Yep.
Yep, the Red Cross started enforcing this years ago, it's happened to quite a few re-releases of games!
Yes, actually, although they weren't threatening lawsuits, they've grown displeased with being misrepresnted in videogames; you're not supposed to put the red cross on medical supply boxes in real life either.
Yeah, they did about 10 years ago boingboing.net/2006/02/09/canadian-red-cross-w.html
I would love to challenge that in court if I was rich. You can't copyright a red plus sign.
I never realized how much the voice acting had decreased in quality until I saw this review. Both in DNF and this game, Duke sounds...friendly with a dose of lazy? Spot on assessment that he doesn't sound angry like in the original game.
DNF's dukelines were fine, strangely enough, all things considered. The ones in the 3DAE were awful; switched to the original versions as soon as I've heard them in-game. One thing I'll praise them for: they allowed us to have the original versions and the new dukelines at the same time.
I remember reading Jon St John recorded the original Duke 3D lines through gritted teeth and has never recorded it the same way since.
Switch port for this was announced yesterday and will release on June 23rd, already got it pre-ordered and downloaded on my Switch Lite and best of all is I didn't spend a cent on it thanks to gold coins I had saved up.
Heh, you did like I did. I spent 64 cents on my copy. Worth.
Switch version has some noticeable and unfortunate slowdown in certain situations when in the new rendering mode, but generally plays fine.
Clint, I suspect the problem with the sounds is this: as you know, the crispness of the old sfx, that's just what they had to sound like when there were less bits to work with in these old games. What I think happened is they decided to cut off some of the frequencies that make the old sfx sound crisp - an extremely lazy attempt at fixing the problem and any audio engineer worth their salt wouldn't set out to do, because the result very obviously sounds like absolute crap.
They showed no respect to the source material with this. If they had good taste, they would have left the sound effects the same (even if I'm wrong there's no excuse for what they sound like now) AND coded down or bitcrushed the newly recorded lines. You CAN do that, in fact it's incredibly easy - and they'd fit right in with the old ones!
I love when games include a developer commentary mode. It makes me go through the game a second time more slowly and appreciate the environment while hearing the devs stories about the process. I wish a lot more games included that.
Why is Randy in the audio commentary? Why not just have some of the guys who worked on it?
I imagine they do. I hope they do. That would be one redeeming feature of this release.
Because he's thinks that'll give him Game dev cred, when he's one of the worst out there. Remember Colonial Marines?
Wow, had no idea.
***** And why would that stop Gearbox from inviting them over for an interview/commentary session?
Actually, now that it's out: is it just Randy, or the others too?
Robo9400 Awesome!
Jon St. Jon just sounds bored to death.
Can't say I blame him. This rerelease is pathetic.
Bazinga.
Zabeus Yeah, exactly.
Call me a noob, but what is the fuss about Bazinga? Why is it considered bad?
Jebediah Oldenheimer To me the laugh track is the first sign that there will be no humor at all.
lol If they are going to add in a catchphrase as lame as "Bazinga" from an even lamer character on an even MORE lamer programme, I'm shocked they didn't add "Did I do that?" and "Woah!".
I lost all respect for Gearbox after Aliens colonial marines.
I gave em the benefit of the doubt then...
But World Tour here is the most obvious cash grab I've ever seen. Duke Nukem 3D vanishes off of Steam and GOG leading up to the release? Too much to be just a coincidence or JUST because of licensing and legal matters. Advantage is being attempted to be taken of Duke fans and that is NOT something even as a person who's not a duke fan that I'll tolerate.
The only credit I give Gearbox is getting Homeworld out in digital format and a (in my opinion, although the tactics still aren't working quite right, but I've adapted) wonderful remaster. Although I don't know dev side how much Gearbox had to do with that since they got a bunch of the old relic team who made the game in the first place to do the remaster.
I like this review. It illustrates the missteps without going psycho and calling it the Death of Duke Nukem or something like that.
Randy Pitchford is getting nothing from me but a slap
Did you slap him
They should have remade all the enemy sprites as a 20th Anniversary special. It wouldn't have costed too much at all and the fans would have ate it up. Still 2D but with sharp as modern tech allows detail. That could have been done easily considering there aren't that many enemies anyway. It's their AI that made them fun.
The main issue for me is price. Plus with the removal of Megaton, what's the point.
They're trying to force peoples' hands as much as they can. With world tour out, they would have had to drop the price of Megaton Edition by comparison, which would in turn make it an even more superior version... It has workshop support and runs really well, why WOULDN'T people get Megaton Edition instead? So Gearbox takes it down.
So yeah. Really shitty move they're trying to pull, not falling for it
From now on I would just avoid Gearbox like the plague.
The removal of Megaton is purely legal crap that is basically out of Gearbox's hands. The same exact thing happened when Zenimax bought id Software; All DOOM games that were sold under Activision banner vanished for a while, including from XBLA. Activision simply wasn't allowed to sell those anymore.
As for why Megaton isn't featured in this pack? I'm guessing it's again about the rights. Or that Gearbox didn't want un-official expansions to be attached to the anniversary release. Personally I don't care for those episodes in the first place, so I'm not too devastated about not having them here.
Penguin DT Then this says more about how poorly licensing is handled in the game industry if anything. No one can ever say 'let it be sold forever, but the rights to more need to be acquired' nah they say 'only for a certain period of time' what a load of crap.
19.99 vs 9.99. That is what I am up in arms about.
Also it still cracks me up whoever keeps recording footage for trailers of these old games, be it Duke, Shadow Warrior, or anything really, they run through in god mode.
Yeah, I won't be able to get this because there's no Linux Port, but there was a Linux port on steam of the Megaton Edition.
They took down a superior version so that people wouldn't pick that instead. They're trying to force peoples' hands and unfortunately for them a lot of us are smart enough not to fall for it.
If the code is well maintained, it would take little effort to make it Linux-compatible. Plus the positive mention by LGR would easily pay it back in its endorsement value. Only short-sighted, greedy people think it's only about sold copies.
It's honestly not that difficult to complie applications for GNU/Linux (so long as you have the source code with a configure and make file).
Very excellent episode. The biggest drawback out of all is the lack of expansion packs that the Megaton Edition had!
Is it true that one of the new lines for Duke Nukem is 'Bazinga'?
Might as well have made him say Huzzah.
Pretty sure, yeah. Referencing TV and movies? What cringe.
Huzzah isn't the worst. You could also have him say "Yippee!" or "woops" or "Get jiggy with it!"
RT or "Groov....wait.
Anything worse and he's say that Duke's GETTIN' JIGGY WITH IT.
Having Gearbox buy the Duke Nukem brand was a mistake, Flying Wild Hog should of brought it, they seem more akin to more classic FPS's with Hard Reset and Shadow Warrior.
I still can't believe we had Gearbox remove Megaton Edition (which was basically the modern definitive port seeming as it had the base game, Duke it Out, Life's a Beach, Nuclear Winter and STEAM WORKSHOP SUPPORT and the classic version on dos box) Just so that they can slap their face on it, even with all of the stuff added.
This was an excellent and very informative review.
I appreciate it!
It was spot on on every point. I've been a fan of DN3D since day one and while this pack was fun it was also disappointing how little they did to improve it beyond the lighting, normal maps, and ambient occlusion. - I knew something was off about the sound quality but thought it was just the aging tech. - The flame thrower is useless. - The rerecorded lines just don't mesh. - Also, on consoles the aim mechanic is kind of crappy.
I really feel for the fans here. What a mediocre cash grab.
Clay Mann Yes problem! what a joke!
The game released in Germany for the first time after it was put on the index back in the day and since the only Duke Nukem experience I have was with the terrible DNForever, I wanted to see what fans love so much about DN3D. Got the game on the PS4 and just finished the first episode. Love it! It's incredibly fun, controls are tight, I'm amazed at how well the level design still holds up and it's just a blast to play through. Really happy with the purchase and I'm glad you recommended it to people like me, who have never played this game before.
It seems like it's only worth for the new levels at a discounted price. The Megaton Edition felt more complete with the "Duke's Caribbean", "Duke it out in DC" and "Nuclear Winter" packs that are missing from the World Tour Edition.
I've just started playing this in 2020 and you have hit the nail on the head. As a die-hard Duke fan it's a bit disappointing but I'm happy to see Duke get some new content even if it isn't the best it could be.
Thanks for the video about Megaton Edition way back when. I picked it up then because of you.
You're quite welcome, it was a great pack of gaming goodness.
It was awesome, I just wish I could ever get a co op game going. I love co op in any game.
Same here, I'm glad I bought it 6 months before it was removed, after seeing your review several times over the years (also back then because of the sweet Linux support). Awesome port. :)
@@MaximilienNoal Yepe!
I remember connecting my old pc which had a pentium 120 megahertzs to my friends computer and watching him fly around on a jetpack, as we played in co-op. This was in 96. Games evolved so much. Proud to have been a part of this generation. Hail to the King, baby.
I like how you said "your speakers" and then a picture of my actual (ancient) pc speakers popped up. You broke my 4th wall.
I bought my digital copy for 10 dollars on switch and it ran and worked pretty good and I personally love it.
I respect your opinion on it
6:28 - LGR's Duke impression here is uncanny!
can't believe that it has been that long. Still have my original CD from 96. So many memories this game will have stuck in my brain until my brain dies.
i am definitely in favor of more dukematch. wonder if I can brush off the olde user maps from back in the day and play them. Need me some dodgeball.
The new episode is fine, but it's missing modes and is worse in a few ways, but the worst thing is you can't get Megaton Edition on Steam anymore.. for no reason. That game was perfect and there isn't even a Steam page for it now. I bought it prior so i'm good, but this all seems very stupid to me.
BigBangBlitz If it's obvious to the long-time player, it won't be for the casuals, and they directly fund these devs.
I can't buy Megaton Edition for a friend, and the steam workshop will become an absolute graveyard. It's pulled from the store for the simple reason of trying to force your hand to buy a new version. That's enough to make me kind of ticked off at Gearbox.
Also, people always have their hopes up for online play, but every time there's a new version, people play it for a bit then the servers end up all empty. Either people are being ridiculous and staying maybe TOO loyal to the old duke 3d, or people just aren't as interested anymore. Still, overall it's frustrating.
true, also the megaton edition was a better game at 10 bucks, this one is twice the price.
Darrark actually, it was pulled from the store because there were major legal issues about the rights to create it in the first place. Specifically the guy who created it was given a contract from 3D Realms after 3D Realms had already signed all rights away to Gearbox
Dylan Morrison : Any links for proof?
Of course, even if true, a rights sign-over wouldn't mean take it off the storefront two years down the line unless there was no compromise, or Gearbox were just lazy and didn't bother until Duke 20th was on the books.
Cool, balanced, non-biased review. Excellent. Thanks LGR.
paul nash
Putting the words non-biased and review is a fallacy...they’re both inherently hypocritical...
What pisses me off is megaton edition was removed from steam simultaneously as this version was added. I get that they don't want 2 copies of the same game on the steam store, but why not package them together? Megaton was a reloaded package anyway.
5:32 that sound issue has been fixed.
The dev commentary seems to be the most interesting feature in my opinion.
Thanks for the review Clint. I see that what you're getting at. I may consider picking it up anyway, just because I actually haven't really played Duke 3D. But I won't have my hopes up too high for it.
I preordered it on the switch, and I’ve never played it. I’m looking forward to it.
Same here
OH wow, when you did the sound quality comparison, I completely missed that the first sample was the new version!
There is nothing like playing original copy of Duke Nukem 3D with the real deal , crt monitor , 486 , 3d card , soundblaster 16 , retro mouse and keyboard , creative speakers
word
3d card??? Shameful!!!
0:06 LGR says Duke Nukem like no other. If the box had a voice, Clint would be it.
The audio quality getting muffled is anti-aliasing. Technically it's "superior", but the aliasing from the original is what gives it that gritty high end.
I think you mean interpolation, which it's not.. this is clearly a subpar samplerate.
It sounds compressed. Like 64 kbps MP3 files. It's clearly worse.
Think of it like bilinear interpolation for textures vs software rendering - bilinear smooths them out but makes them look mushy, while software render makes them appear sharper, but they appear jagged.
The same thing is going on with these sounds - the original samples were of a low samplerate, so without any filtering they sound sharp yet gritty, but when filtered they sound smoother, but more muffled. They can easily turn it off in the code if it's done software side.
never liked the smooth texture vibe, retro is always better imo
Aliasing does exist in audio. It's what you get when you resample audio poorly. An antialiasing filter is indeed a low-pass filter, but when used to such an extreme such as in this ('cause the original game must have audio sample rates of around 8000Hz) it does indeed sound muffled by reducing the level of the artefacts. In this case, the aliased sound does sound crisper. I'm saying that the audio engineer must've programmed it in such as way that sounded better to him (hence "technically it's superior) even though it doesn't.
a remaster of the good old Time To Kill and Land of Babes is what a need.
Zero Hour, too.
Doesn't surprise me about the lack of new content. After all it's a 20 year old game. It's kinda like the Rolling Stones on tour. Fun to see back in their heyday but now just old and awkward.
Your review was the one I was waiting for. Thanks Clint!
I plan on buying the GameStop physical release for PS4 next week for the same $20 price, and wait out for a sale price for the PC. :)
I've long considered this to be a good way for anyone who's young who never got to check the game out and heard the stories of legend to jump in on the game and understand why it's amazing. As for the extra content I'm still glad it's there and made by some of the original team even if it's not going to be the most amazing shit in the whole universe, it's still a nice little extra if anything.
Thanks for taking one for the team. I'm really disappointed that the Duke Nukem Reloaded remake was never released. When Gearbox announced a new version of the game, I was hoping it would be more along those lines. It was a fan-made remake and Gearbox had initially given them a go-ahead, but then it was cancelled, and part of me was hoping that it'd had resurfaced as this.
Duke Nukem Megaton edition: 4 episodes + 3 expansion packs (of which two are pretty damn good), $10
20th Anniversary edition: 5 episodes and no expansions, $20
Not too mention
-Inferior audio quality
-Incompatible with eDuke32
-No Steam Workshop/Modding Support
Wow. A pretty stinging review. You didn't sugar coat the whole thing because they sent you a free copy. Good on ya!
Got this on the Nintendo Switch for $5 on sale, I can kick ass and chew bubblegum on the go
I've enjoyed the commentary, just wish there was more. As someone who hasn't bought a copy of Duke3D since its release in '96 (1.3D, not Atom), this one is a nice fit for me. I do like the rewind mechanic, haven't experienced that before.
You can map using mapster32. Just throw the mapster files into the DN3DTAWT directory and fire it up. The maps of episode 5 can even be opened and explored too. (Though the texture explorer (V) is glitchy for me.)
You can then use the DukeWorkshopUploader.exe that comes with DN3DTAWT in the main directory to upload your creations to the workshop. A little cumbersome, but it works for now.
Also missing dc, winter and beach that was in megaton edition T_T
Hi LGR... I have not been connected to the web anywhere I can watch vids in some time so i have downloaded a load to my netbook to watch in the evening. Can I say your videos are of an exceptionally high quality now, well done
I'm seriously pissed off by the fact they removed the Duke from the PS Vita and didn't mention any return of him.
I even bought the damn thing especially for this game! There is now no possible way to get Duke Nukem (conveniently) on the go.
Duke said it himself: "What a mess!". It'd be one thing if it were just another release of Duke 3D, but there's so much good stuff in this one that the bad stuff surrounding it seems ten times worse. It's crazy that this isn't the definitive, ultimate Duke that it should be.
The serious sam easter egg is kind of funny, but probably not for the reason they intended. In the original Duke 3D they reference "one doomed space marine" and "I ain't scared of no Quake," which you can laugh at because despite how great and innovative those games were, D3D brought a fantastic experience of its own. With the long delay of DNF, Serious Sam took over Duke's role, and after DNF failed to deliver, you can't really appreciate this jab at SS the same way. My two cents.
I figured it was a direct rebuttal to this ;)
ua-cam.com/video/m0uFPBvGdgU/v-deo.html
definitely. kind of proves the point though!
Your Duke impression gets me rock hard 10/10
What a waste - they could have finally made a Duke3d with proper multiplayer (servers/easy drop in and play like quake) but they went for the easy money. Shameful af and no way I'm purchasing this.
Dude, when I played Duke Nukem 3D 20th anniversary I had nothing but some videos, when I realized sunstorm had made expansions that weren't even there I was dissapointed because they looked awesome
Meh They didn't even include Splitscreen Coop, at least Doom on PS3 and 360 have 4 player splitscreen coop which imo is the highlight for that version. 😤
Wat really
Just got it on PS4 for just $2. And it's usually only $5 now at most. May not be the best version but at that price point? Definitely worth it.
They should have released the Remake from Interceptor instead (Duke 3D Reloaded)
It baffles me how they charge twice as much as the Megaton Edition, yet take away its extra episodes (Life's a Beach, Duke it out in D.C., Nuclear Winter).
Also, that Serious Sam easter egg in the new episode left a sour taste in my mouth. Kind of a hidden middle finger from Gearbox towards Devolver Digital (who published the old Megaton Edition).
Extremely frustrating that Megaton Edition had the original expansions and this doesn't for whatever lazy ass reason, but Pitchford and crew decided to make this the only commercial release of Duke 3D available these days anyhow.
I have never played Duke 3D in any form before, being born in the 90s, and I got caught between picking an Atomic edition CD on ebay, or the $20 rerelease. But your review swayed me to the former. Thanks, LGR. I care a lot about sound design in games and hearing the difference between the two convinced me.
removing a game's existence to re-release it at a higher price is disgusting behaviour. removing that option and not providing the game at all for mac or linux users is bizarre.
I already have the Megaton Edition, so I will wait for a sale.
Just don't give Gearbox your money. Just don't do it. They pulled every version of Duke Nukem 3D and even the old 2D Duke Nukem games from every store front they could and completely screwed the guy who made Megaton Edition.
This version of the game also objectively gives you *less* than Megaton Edition did and cost *more*.
Or download it for free....
If you haven't played it yet I highly recommend the "Alien Armageddon" mod for Duke Nukem 3D - all you have to do is pop your Atomic Edition data file into the extracted folder and go. Play solo or with Bombshell with the ability to switch back and forth on the apply, upgradeable weapons, new weapons, lots of new enemies, slide and roundhouse kick moves etc. and a new mini-episode. Very impressive stuff.
They should've hired you to record the new lines. The new version is a missed opportunity, I agree.
"Bazinga!"
Man, I feel sorry for ya, LGR. You are the biggest Duke fan I know of and that audio quality disparity is unexcusable. This was a great review but that is probably the biggest issue this has for me. When you showed it side by side I was shocked.
I love Duke, but I'll never get this. I have the Megaton Edition. I refuse to pay $20 for shit I can get through mods elsewhere.
Got it for $5. Usually $10 on the Switch, but I had Gold Points from Doom Eternal.
Hahaha! I loved that "aggravated, pissed-off" comment about the new voice. Well done!
i already have the megaton edition. i wish i had a discount of some sort cause 20$ is just bs. i'll still buy it tho
Please don't. They're giving you the middle finger and a smile. Don't give them money for that.
Why? The fall/Halloween sale is just around the corner, so if you really want it just wait a couple weeks and I'll bet you'll be able to get it for at least $10 then.
+Warfighter Eternal
If you want to support Duke then send some money over to the eduke32 devs, who have been getting completely legally shit on by Gearbox over a license they have no control over. Then buy World Tour at a discount.
as a mac user I am glad that I bought the megaton edition a few months ago. I also enjoyed the expansion packs A LOT (DC, Beach).
I'd happily plunk down the $20 for the new version, *IF* it had a Linux build. Luckily the GOG version of Atomic Edition is still available to download -- provided you bought it on there before they yanked it off all platforms for..... reasons... i guess.
They really should have remade Duke Nukem 4Ever as a "Devolution" and used the Duke Nukem 3Ds engine (with all the new lighting and bells n whistles from the world tour edition) to essentally recreate and reimage what Duke Nukem Forever was actually supposed to be.
Not only would it have been an amazing 20th anniversary gift but it also would have been the ultimate apology for the catastrophe that was Forever, garnering good will with the hardcore fans by giving Duke the second chance he really deserves but also sort of "cleaning the slate" of what that game did for his reputation and Gearbox reputation as a whole, showing that while they fucked up they can make up for it. Couple that with a discount for those who have the original Duke Nukem Forever and I think this would have been a much different review lol.
All that being said, the new episodes look really cool to me, so as an owner of Megaton Edition and the 3D Realms Anniversary Edition ill just wait till it goes on sale and gladly pick it up for thay reason alone lol.
I am sad the data files are not compatible under Eduke32. Would be cool if someone remakes the levels for it so people with Linux could play this!
Wow. For a lazy game reviewer, you sure got this review out in a fairly timely manner considering the game only game out a couple of days ago.
Greasy Randy strikes again
Nobody can beat Joey's world tour the video game.
rewind is so sad...
i didint really like this version, megaton edition have much more content, and eduke32 is the best for graphical effect/texture/model
I actually want to see this on Nintendo Switch. Duke hasn’t been on a Nintendo system since Duke Nukem 3D on the N64.
4:54 Thanks for touching upon the lack of GNU/Linux and macOS support. More to the fact; If you haven't bought Megaton Edition when it was available, as a Linux and Mac user you have almost no means to natively play Duke Nuke 3D and its previous expansions unless you buy the World Tour and extract DUKE3D.GRP and DUKE.RTS files via WINE or SteamCMD... Sucks...
Those files you mention from World Tour are _not_ compatible with other versions or ports of the game, as mentioned in the review. You really are out of luck as a Linux/Mac user right now :/
That is a real shame :|
Seriously? Then, Linux and Mac user cannot legally play Duke Nukem 3D natively any longer... This is forced piracy and grey market! As I checked, grey market has some Megaton Edition keys, when they are sold out, you are out of luck...
Good thing Piratebay is there to save the day.
Can not be coincidence that I'm watching this video exactly one year after you've uploaded it.
They removed megaton so you would pay double for around half of the content.
Fuck 'em. Not buying it again.
One thing I did notice is, they left out the reload button. A lot of people assume it didn't have one because it's old like Doom and Wolfenstein. But it actually DID used to have a reload key on PC, which was 'R'.
This can be incredibly frustrating when you know you've only got one shot left in your mag, but you don't want to waste it. But you know if you don't, you'll get caught with your pants down in combat.
Duke Nukem 3D never had a reload button. Hell, there was only one weapon in the game that needed reloading, and that was the pistol.
Just hearing the name "Randy Pitchford" makes me cringe. He defended "Duke Nukem Forever", and insulted the critics, but now apparently he changed his mind and he bashes the game. The game celebrated sexism, but now he attacks bigots and misogynists.
All of this is minor compared to his lies upon lies about "Aliens: Colonial Marines".

I never take sides in these kinds of issues. Once you pick a side, the truth stops being important.

Damn... You caught me...
This game brings back memories of when I was younger :)
