I thought there were two main things that led to the NFL ban on the helmet radio. One was the opposing teams immediately in the following weeks tried their own equipment to listen in on the browns calls or to intentionally scramble the signal. Two, the technology still hadn't been perfected and ratterman the qb swore he was getting intermittent transmissions from local taxi cabs as well as the coaches plays.
Mac Hawkins the 80's as well as the early 90's before they moved to Baltimore they had a SuperBowl ready team with Bill Belichick, please go back & know your football history I bet your a bandwagoner just waiting for a team with a good record and say your a "life-long fan"
This video is terrific! I went down the rabbit hole of other SB Nation-produced videos and I'm really enjoying them. Cool subjects, good storytelling and use of animated illustrations. Great stuff! (I do this sort of thing as an amateur and a professional)
*Harambe* You say the game is played different which is true as compared to the college game. But this is not because of the radio. College ball without radio vs Pro ball with radio. There's another variable there. The only thing you can compare it to is pro ball without a radio. Which was slower. NFL is faster with radio than NFL without. College tempo is not related.
Literally all they need in college football is 3 signs with random emojis on them to play call. College is quicker because the offense is much MUCH more simplified.
Anyone else notice right at the very start how Griffin was used as an example for not being able to hear because of the crowd even though he's wearing a radio helmet. He's got the green sticker.
I believe all the helmets are used to communicate. I’ve been taking clips of random players, not the QB or a D player covering the ear holes exactly like you would if you were trying to hear something
Jukka-Pekka Tuominen Yeah i seen fox sports talking about a coach that got mad that he couldn't use the system after half time because the other team radios were messing up. Coach was heated & asked the ref if they were being honest & telling the truth.
Come on man - You botched the story of the helmet radio’s return. The World League experimented with it successfully in 1991 and 1992, paving the way for the NFL to adopt it. And the USA Network, which televised the World League, was even allowed to air the radio conversation LIVE during the game telecast. If you find video of it, it’s pretty awesome.
That is absolutely correct. I played QB in the world league when it was first used. No one had heard of it at that time, for the use of one way communication with the QB. We also experimented with cameras on the QB’s helmet to show fans what we were seeing during the play. It was like a Go Pro camera system. 4:42
I personally hate the helmet radio. It takes away an element of the game, probably the most important element in sports ENTERTAINMENT, the crowd. As its a radio signal, it could easily be intercepted as well so it just adds another avenue of cheating to the game that has been covered in controversies and accusations recently. The ban for unfair advantage was justified.
The Patriots should've been strip of every trophy draft picks and ticket sales for the next 10 years after spy gate. And wat makes the NFL think they're not cheating today?
Hi I know i'm 3 years late to the party but i'm doing a project on the early stages of the headset and i want to use your video but i need ur name so if your comfortable giving it to me via email or a reply that would be nice thanks
Would love to see every player get to have the transmitter and it not have a cut off point. Plus the booth be able to talk to the players. It would certainly help the quality of the sport due to the added strategy. Also they could maybe switch to Bluetooth or something more reliable than a glorified walkie talkie since it usually becomes messed up throughout the game.
GiantsRTheBest1 Bluetooth transmitters would be too easy to hack with the frequency it carries. it'll end up with a bunch of other teams cheating or fans hearing the play call & shouting it to the coach if they have a Bluetooth hearing device capable of hacking or bypassing the v system thru it's frequency. Wi-Fi is very easy to hack & shut down too people don't know.
Amazing insight I’m just really disappointed how technology has taken over the game with instant replay and excessive penalties Endless reviews The referees are communicated with as well
"the first quarterback to use a helmet"
1:29
The Browns probably spend a lot of money on radio helmets for their QBs
This has aged well😄😄
I thought there were two main things that led to the NFL ban on the helmet radio.

I've honestly always wondered how this technology evolved. great video
Thanks! We thought the story was pretty incredible too.
awww, remember when the Browns were innovative and good? those were the days
Alex Connor no
Love boat Is amazing they were good in the 80s lmao
Already Used no the 50's 😂😂😂
Mac Hawkins the 80's as well as the early 90's before they moved to Baltimore they had a SuperBowl ready team with Bill Belichick, please go back & know your football history I bet your a bandwagoner just waiting for a team with a good record and say your a "life-long fan"
BlackCell0623 exactly go ham ma nigga 😂
This channel is so underrated
Conrad it really really is
Conrad yes it is
Fr it really is
Compared to the website hell yeah
Brendan I am underrated
Never thought I would hear Browns and Championship in the same sentence ever
They won 7 back in the 50's it was 10 years of nonstop browns in the finals
This video is terrific! I went down the rabbit hole of other SB Nation-produced videos and I'm really enjoying them. Cool subjects, good storytelling and use of animated illustrations. Great stuff! (I do this sort of thing as an amateur and a professional)
I love that it cuts out with 15 seconds left on the play clock. Which means it's then left to the QB to read the defense and audible, and vice versa.
They still can use hand signals once it hits 15 seconds
If one guy with the green dot gets injured does the next guy have to wear his sweaty helmet?
Brodie Wheldrake they have more than one player or helmet they could use probably
There are backup helmets on the sidelines in case of injury or malfunction. They're locked up to prevent tampering.
Brodie Wheldrake if all else fails I'm sure they probs have hand signals too haha
Thanks Browns......never thought I'd say that.
mikeiswhite3 you could say it when your team plays the browns and get an easy win
mikeiswhite3 more like thanks Ravens. The team in the video went to Baltimore lol so you still can’t thank the Browns
I never knew that the frequency cut off. That's actually a cool tidbit to know
I need that for my math quiz
Ndudi Enwereuzor lol I can imagine you sitting in class with a football helmet on
Ndudi Enwereuzor how?
Yeah, the radio doesn't speed up the game as much as how the game is played. Just look at college football, no radio, plenty of speed...
I don't think the comparison is fair. NHL is now faster too. Is that also because of radio?
NHL has smaller field than NFL...almost similar size of basketball court
I'm gay.
Literally all they need in college football is 3 signs with random emojis on them to play call. College is quicker because the offense is much MUCH more simplified.
Fascinating. Great video!
Dilfer is the most powerful last name i’ve ever seen
didnt the middle linebacker backers get headsets like last year. idk
great video
Bradshaw called his own plaus and still got 4 rings.
If I were a headcoach in the NFL I'd use different Baseball signals for every single play each week that I'd show my QB.
They still do that but it's last resort
thx for initiating the hey cortna feature of my windows with the hey coach brown saying lol
Great Quality Video.
Congrats on 100k subs
Anyone else notice right at the very start how Griffin was used as an example for not being able to hear because of the crowd even though he's wearing a radio helmet. He's got the green sticker.
Yeah, that's the point... The crowd is too loud to hear the radio, QBs are the ones with the radio
Finally! I have my answer on time. 15 seconds before play clock hits zero's, transmission cuts out
I believe all the helmets are used to communicate. I’ve been taking clips of random players, not the QB or a D player covering the ear holes exactly like you would if you were trying to hear something
lol trent dilfer interview i bet that was the only one he got in years. guy was carried so hard by the monster ravens defense.
The Browns should now put in Radio as their starting qb.
Neva knew they had ear pieces in them helmets at all that’s crazy. U noe I’m a NBA guy not much on nfl tbh but that’s dope
2:11 yes. That is coach bill belicheck. For the Cleveland browns.
What happens if the defensive player gets subbed out or when both designated defensive players are on the field
What if every player has a radio in their helmet so they could do the play without even huddling
Perfect
One glitch was the vacuum tubes required for the '56 model helmet.
He was the first line to wear a helmet in game da heck
Great vid...I knew it already, but thanks for putting it out there for those that didn't know. SF
Wonder if they'll use something like the hololens or another VR device to communicate in a few years...
Is this still used today?
so there is also a player in the defense team with the radio on the helmet? didn't know that
UnQualsiasiUtente They have a green dot on there helmet.
Has it ever been an issue that a team has claimed that their radio system is down just to make it harder for the other team to communicate?
Jukka-Pekka Tuominen Yeah i seen fox sports talking about a coach that got mad that he couldn't use the system after half time because the other team radios were messing up.
Coach was heated & asked the ref if they were being honest & telling the truth.

Doesnt having communication help the players figure the other team out?
I thought the intro was gonna turn into a cake song
won't lie, never knew homeboys had radios.
Maybe someday the NFL will use pictures to communicate plays with players, like they do in college. Maybe.
So the browns did do something wow!
Why were the chiefs fans doing the FSU motion thing
4:15 unless you're the Patriots ;-O
nice video
The moral of the story less talk more play action...😬🔥😝
Holy shit that's crazy
Crazy the browns originated it
Was this pretty good?
Good thing that cop was a Browns fan!
"the first player to use a helmet in the NFL"
Oh no Brian Billick, you have to put TIME and EFFORT into your fucking job!? OH NO!! WHAT HAS THE WORLD COME TO!!! Fuck's sake.
Did the Steelers lose to the Chargers last Sunday also because of radio issues?
Jose Alonso no boswell just sucks ass

Browns won 2 championships wow that's a first
Chili Pet they won more than 2...
Ziokz AAFC records don’t count within the NFL books. The only non NFL records that count are the records of the AFL.
Should use good ole hand signals.
Wow 😮
The Patriots should've been strip of every trophy draft picks and ticket sales for the next 10 years after spy gate. And wat makes the NFL think they're not cheating today?
Mike check
Radiohead
spygate?
Cue the browns jokes
BUT WHY PAUL BROWN DOES HAVE A PRESS PASS TUCK ON THIS HAT?!!!!!
It's a feather
Hi I know i'm 3 years late to the party but i'm doing a project on the early stages of the headset and i want to use your video but i need ur name so if your comfortable giving it to me via email or a reply that would be nice thanks
How do you not mention the radio interference from passing aircraft!?
Find it real insulting that you portrayed Warren Moon in a Vikings Jersey. Smh

I hate when people in the industry call football "The product"
Finally the browns did something good
Why can't they use "sign language" like baseball? Crowd noise can't effect it!
they do that too.
Notice how the Browns are the worst team in the NFL now even with this technology and they INVENTED IT.
Hey we did something good for football
The browns where good
browns still trying to find a way to win to this day. lmao
Amazing insight I’m just really disappointed how technology has taken over the game with instant replay and excessive penalties Endless reviews The referees are communicated with as well
Brown have never been to superbowl
big peen I think he means championships on like the playoffs
And you look at he Browns today......smh
As usual, the Browns “discover” something good for their football team only to lose it to the rest of the league.
The only time the browns did something good.
What are you communists Russian 's spys communists russian spys hahaha 1:10
Wait browns can actually win
Go Browns :/
Nerds
G
Wow the Browns were REALLY good back then too bad they suck now
I think foot ball is gonna be dead by 2050
Mike Clitoris why
You might be right but right now you're really fucking dumb
100th comment
Honestly this sounds like a whole lotta LIES! Story look a wild left turn so corny
This is horrible
All that and the browns are still garbage, can't even fill out the paper work for a trade.
