    I built my DH2 from Mike's plans in 2004, nearly 20 years ago, and it's still flying!! That model was the start of a great friendship with Mike, and he's been over here to visit me in Canada a few times, and I've been over to the UK, too. Looking forward to following your progress on this fantastic model!

      Hi, still going strong, that's great, testament to it's solid construction, did you fit ailerons and did you watch the maiden flight video linked at the end?

    • @vonJaerschky
      @vonJaerschky 10 місяців тому

      I did fit aileron. I used a single pull line to each aileron, and used springs on top of each aileron to provide the return pull, a-la full scale. I did watch the maiden. It's such a nice flying model. I usually fly mine 10 ft off the deck, low and slow on calm evenings. Always makes me smile.@@CliffHarveyRCPlanes

    Amazing build Cliff, I'll use the template out of paper for the sheeting of the fuselage, don't know why I didn't figure that out. Jeff in LA USA

    I recently added an Airco DH2 to a usermade aircraft for Phoenix RC thread in RCGroups forum. It's much bigger, it's at least 1/4 scale if not a little larger. Your model flies brilliantly. I've wanted to make a 1/12th RET R/C scale DH2 for a dozen years, Other models keep jumping in front of it in the queue.

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  10 місяців тому

      That's a trouble isn't it, this one's been on my build list for decades 🙂👍

    You mentioned using piano wire for an extended motor shaft Cliff, I would suggest using silver steel instead, it is more accurate.

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  10 місяців тому

      Thanks Ron for the suggestion, when you say more accurate, what are you referring to exactly?

    • @rongray3888
      @rongray3888 10 місяців тому

      Hi Cliff, silver steel is more precise (diameter). But if you want hardened steel as well try using drill bit blanks (they are also excellent as axles!).

    Oh, I`ve just made one of those. If ten more people make a DH2 we can have a squadron! If they start now then they can be ready for 28th June the 110th
    anniversary of the death of the Arch Duke Ferdinand, which started the Great War.
    Or 1st of April 2024 which is the 106th anniversary of the R.A.F.
    If enough people are showing an interest, then I will do a build along video of the short kit DH2.

    Nice, I have one. They are very sensitive to the elevator because of the motor weight position. I didn't have as sensitive ailerons for some reason, I have more mass on the tail with the servos mounted on the back. Mine is an ARF, so it does not look as good as yours.

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  10 місяців тому

      Hi Ted, mounting the servos on the back wasn't an idea I had, it would have saved a bit of work! They all look good in the sky though Ted, cheers

    You did make us wait for it, but well worth the wait! These large models are very tempting. A different skill and tool set I guess. I am thinking of starting big models just for fun, and leave the bits and pieces around until I get there. A formation flight with The Barron would be great!

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  10 місяців тому +1

      Hi Andrew, thanks, bigger means you need more room but you've got the skill set to give it a go, I don't think this particular model is one to practice your flying on though 🤔👍

    Neat job, Cliff. One thing I do differently is fit the motor to the fire wall before installing the firewall onto the fuselage. I just find it easier to drill the holes with the firewall flat on the bench or in my vertical drill. I wouldn't dare to live video my building - too many bodges to reveal :)
    A friend had a third scale DH2 which was tricky to fly and needed careful use of both ailerons and rudder. In fact, once in a turn, some reverse aileron, apparently. Perhaps your smaller model will be different.

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  10 місяців тому

      Hi BF, the reason I do it this way sometimes is to check the position of the motor against the rest of the fuselage, in this case I used a completely different motor from the geared original. As for bodges I'm an expert at them, the video wasn't live as such!! Having flown her now yes, she does need careful rudder and aileron use for best performance, cheers 👍

    Cliff, why don't you use window cleaner to bend your balsa? It works so well and easy.

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  10 місяців тому +1

      Thanks Martin, I've never tried it, can you recommend a product in the UK?

    • @martinkingBlue
      @martinkingBlue 10 місяців тому

      Windolene clear orginal. A few squirts and it starts to bend the balsa. It contains amonia which is the key. It's brilliant. I tried soaking and various other things but windolene works best. Try it. It is not the old purple coloured stuff our mums used to use but the new clear liquid in a squirty bottle. 😀@@CliffHarveyRCPlanes

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  10 місяців тому

      Thank you, the stitching was very simple actually, it's just a zig-zag stitch onto paper which I then cut into strips and glued in place, if you look closely you may see the edge of the paper 🙂👍

    Hi Cliff, hope all is well with you and yours. Can I ask how you did the stitching on the fuselage? Did you do it on card or paper strip first then attach it?

    • @CliffHarveyRCPlanes
      @CliffHarveyRCPlanes  6 місяців тому +1

      Hi Phil, you guessed right, my wife used a zigzag stitch onto a sheet of A4 paper which I then sliced up and stuck directly onto the side of the model, really crude and quick but with a lick of paint it looks pretty effective even though upon closer inspection you can see the edge of the paper. You could apply a small amount of filler smoothed onto the edge to feather it in if you wanted, cheers 👍
