This song has a history as an early-mid 2000s internet meme, specifically circulating in Japan, the most famous of which is an edit of a Japanese McDonalds Commercial featuring Ronald McDonald making some strange noises.

According to the Touhou wiki, the song's name, U.N. Owen Was Her?, is a reference to an Agatha Christie novel, 'And Then There Were None'. In the book, there were invitations sent out, and the spouse of the person who sent the invitations had the name 'U.N. Owen', which stood for 'Unknown', and the characters in that book were killed by an unknown person.
The character the song belongs to, Flandre, was locked underground with no knowledge of the outside world, so Zun related that to U.N. Owen being 'unknown'.
    Quite the odd reference!

Also worth noting, the second-to-last spellcard Flandre uses is straight up called "Secret [And then there will be none]"
I believe her last spell "Q.E.D [Ripples of 495 years]" is also a reference to Agatha Christie? Unsure there, though.

'U.N Owen Was Her?', along with 'Flowering Night' ('Night of Nights'), and 'Bad Apple!!' were essentially the Megalovania of the 2000s. They were incredibly popular as memes, both in Japan and also here in the west. U.N Owen in particular has a history with a Ronald McDonald "MAD" video ('Ronald McDonald Insanity') also known as the 'McRoll', and as a mistitled piece of music called "Death Waltz" as well. There is also a remix of the song by beatMARIO ('Last Brutal Sister Flandre S') which gained immense popularity at around the same time.

About the x.5 games, those are spin offs and while not all of them are composed by other people, the ones made by Twilight Frontier (a doujin group that made the fighting game spin offs and Touhou 17.5) are. However, the bullet hell ones are still composed by ZUN, and the final boss themes plus some other occasional theme in the Twilight Frontier spin offs are also made by ZUN.
The games made by this group are 7.5, 10.5, 12.3, 13.5, 14.5, 15.5 and 17.5. ZUN only composes the final boss themes and, as I said, one more theme occasionally, usually for a very important character in said game.

Oh, Flandre. She's a fun character to talk about.
Mainly known as the main Touhou icon besides Reimu and Marisa, when talking about videogames, she only appeared in these, and in other fighting games as a cameo. She also made some occasional appearances in some of the mangas and CDs, which leads to another fun fact.
For her introduction in Touhou 6, she was known in the internet as the "sadistic creepy murder child that was locked by the rest of her family for everyone else's sake"... Which was somewhat wrong. Yes, she can destroy literally anything (that's her ability nonetheless), and yes, everyone has taken some measures for that, but she's kinda nice. Heck, she CAN destroy those measures if she wants too, but the basement is that comfy for her. That didn't stop her to have (maybe even to this day) the highest amount of remixes, covers and arranges of her theme, tho.

    • @Havic101-atc
      @Havic101-atc 5 місяців тому

Flandre is generally polite and nice to other people, that is true. And she doesn't bother breaking herself out of being locked away in the basement since everything she needs to live is provided for her by others. But she's definitely still unhinged and dangerous. That was part of her character description way back in Touhou 6. And her recent appearances have kept true to that.
Have you seen her in Touhou 17.5 or the official Detective Satori manga? In both she was given permission to leave the basement only to fight a troublemaker causing an incident, and both times her response is to put on a sadistic, creepy, slasher smile and agree immediately because she thinks it'll be fun. And she behaves pretty crazy and ruthless in battle, while almost always smiling or laughing.
Satori tells Flandre the quickest way to figure out who's been possessed by the antagonist is to have her fight everybody who's locked up in Byakuren's temple to see how they react and fight back. Flandre asks if it's fine if she just kills everyone, which is concerning that crossed her mind to begin with. And when Satori tells her that'd be too much for her to handle since Reimu, Marisa, and Byakuren are there, Flandre gets noticeably pissed off and says not to underestimate her. Also concerning that she has the confidence to attempt killing everybody.
She straight up calls herself a god of destruction multiple times, even though Touhou has plenty of gods and she isn't one of them. One of her favorite things to do is defeat opponents that nobody else is able to defeat. Do not make a drinking game out of how many times she says some variation of the word "Destroy." She's definitely still a menace. She just has enough sense to not go on a rampage without a good reason to do so. She's pleasant and friendly in that case.

    • @alejandrotti10
      @alejandrotti10 5 місяців тому

@@Havic101-atc That is true. I was mostly referring to other Flandre interpretations in the fandom where she destroys and kills even more than she says she wants to.
About being able to leave in Gouyoku, it's kind of a gray area. One thing is to have permission of your sister and other inhabitants of the SDM, and the other is being able to leave for an exercise because some god has literally borrowed you a backdoor. Just because the basement is comfy doesn't mean she sometimes gets bored, wanna go for a walk, and maybe even destroy some random meteor in the process.

To this day the music and characters from 6 remain the most popular in the series, even after all this time, with this song being arguably one of the top 5 touhou songs of all time. It's reach is huge and even goes beyond touhou, with popular early 2000s memes such as the Ronald McDonald insanity video. As well as the incorrectly named "death waltz" which was a click bait video about the "hardest piano song ever" and it's just a piano cover of Un owen was her.

For example, for 15.5 ZUN wrote Egoistic Flowers, which you mentioned in this video (I'm waiting for a video with this track, I haven't found it on the channel yet), and at 15.5 ZUN rearranged Necrofantasia from th7 into a new song (Yorimashi Between Dreams and Reality ~ Necro-Fantasia)

So this song is pretty much the 2nd most well known Touhou song, only behind Bad Apple (though that is popular because of the remix version and the music video). As a standalone Touhou song, this is probably the most prolific one. Of course, Touhou as a whole is too niche to ever be well known outside of the gaming or anime-y spheres of the Internet. I don't think U.N Owen Was Her would be recognized outside those contexts, but I would say there is a good chance a lot of people within those spheres would at least recognize the theme, even if they didn't know what it was from. I'd say the only thing more well known is Bad Apple's remix and accompanying music video, and honestly, I think the music video might take the crown for most recognizable Touhou Thing, and even then I'd say that recognition woild be limited to people on the Internet

    About songs repeating across games:
In general, for the main numbered games (full numbers, no decimals), each game is all new tracks. Even if a previous character makes a reappearance, they'll have a new BGM.
The side games (with decimals) on the other hand do sometimes reuse/remix the existing songs. This happens especially with the fighting games, which ZUN is less hands on with (delegating to Tasogare Frontier). 17.5 is another Tasofro title, hence the remix.

These two renditions being so different from each other is pretty appropriate. For a very long time, people only had Flandre'a appearance in Touhou 6 to judge her on, so everyone based their opinion of her on that- a childish, playful, absurdly powerful girl with little regard for holding back her absurd power, which is to "destroy anything and everything". Then, she vanished from the series for a long time (it's kinda hard to use a character who spends all her time locked in a basement) until making her first official appearance in _years_ in one of the graphic novels, where she got a little time in the spotlight. That's when people started to realize that Flandre was only like that in 6 because she hadn't gotten to "play" with anyone in a while.
Turns out, Flandre's actually pretty chill? Like, yeah, she's locked in a basement most of the time, but she could just destroy the lock whenever she wants and leave. And with her insane power, basically no one could stand against her. So why doesn't she? Because she doesn't really mind. She happens to like that basement, and the servants in the mansion take care of her, so it's a pretty cozy life all things considered. The _only_ reason she isn't a recurring, unstoppable force in the series is because she doesn't wanna be.
That's what makes these two very different versions so interesting and equally fitting. The original version, where she's only known as a ludicrously strong opponent, conveys a sadistic, almost thoughtless nature that fits how people tend to _see_ Flandre. The newest version, from the game where for the first time ever Flandre becomes a character you can _play_ as, embodies her true nature: carefree, confident, and _well aware_ of how dangerous she is.

    • @xXTheKingEmothXx
      @xXTheKingEmothXx 2 місяці тому

@@blivveries Not only is she well aware how dangerous she is, she's careful and knows despite the strength of her power, she's not invincible and unstoppable, so she knows restraint. She's just childish. That doesn't stop her from loving her family, her friends, the people that take care of her. Hell, Meiling actively enjoys hanging out and playing with her. Her fight in TH6 only happens because she comes out of the basement wondering where everyone is. Patchy catches wind of this, and summons rain around the manor to make sure she doesnt go wandering outside, otherwise, Marisa/Reimu are free to engage with her.

In fact, I'd love to see you listen to both the original theme and certain fan-arranged theme (though I think you've only ever react to official themes, is that right?). UN Owen was Hers, Night of Nights (Flowering Nights/Lunar Clock), Bad Apple, are among the most popular songs.
Also something unique to Touhou is that Touhou "Remixes" are very frequently different renditions of the songs and arrangements, rather than a standard remix. Well, TH6 has the most famous songs of all the series. Pretty much every song, be it stage theme or boss theme, is *very* popular.
7 and 8 come in close, and I would take a guess and say that 10 is popular too.
But 6 has, by far, the most known songs, except maybe for Bad Apple.
As for the "dark energy"... Makes sense. Flandre is a vampire, whose power is simply "erase you from existence".
She's so powerful that her sister locked her up in the attic, and she's been ther for centuries. She ended up insane, to say the least.
Picture the way a cat likes to play with its prey... But the cat is a lion, and the prey is an earthworm.

Also, songs tend to return when a character does. Particularly in the official spin-offs (the point 5s) but also 9 and 19 have a few rearrangements and remixes. The funniest case to me of that is Deaf to All But the Song from 8, which is remixed in the very next game as Deaf to All But the Song (flower mix).

To answer the sphere thing, yes, I would say that U.N. Owen, along with Bad Apple and Night of Nights are kind of the forefront, the surface of Touhou's sphere of influence, ie it's the thing people who are outsiders to the Touhou sphere outsiders to the gaming sphere, heck the most normie, or even hillbilly under-rock dwelling individuals would likely know about or maybe even equate to Touhou like, when some people think Touhou they think this melody.

Typically touhou songs are stuck to a character, so if the character appears then the song will appear
Since not every game features every character, some songs only come back after a long time
This song, UN Owen, is fascinating in that it is associated with the character Flandre Scarlet
If you've been on the internet, you've probably seen the character somewhere, she is one of the most popular touhou characters
The reason I say this is interesting is because Flandre appears in touhou 6 in 2002, and then did not appear in another game until 17.5 released in 2023
Obviously fans are ecstatic to see her return, but
I just think it's amazing that the character left such an impression that people were still loving her song, remixing it, drawing art of her and writing fanfiction for twenty years
I heard someone once say that either this song or Flowering Night (another touhou song) held a record for most remixed song of all time
But it was just some random person, not a trustworthy source, so take it with a truckload of salt
    Point is
This song is insanely popular in niche internet subcultures

This song is so popular that it's one of the few who made it to become a meme on the level of Megalovenia in the 2000s, beyond what Touhou is. I'm actually surprised you haven't heard of this song before for how much if a meme this is, outside the context of Touhou...

Each entries (with exceptions between here and there) will have some new characters to introduce into the touhou casts. Even though some of those x.5 games are made by other studios with collaboration with ZUN, He is the person that make the music for those new characters while already existing characters either get the remix from other music artists or ZUN just rearrange/make a new one himself.
For the music relation, it's not really that this specific theme is popular so the theme comes up in newer entries but moreso the character is related to the story of that entry (as they appear to either be one of the main protagonists or one of the bosses OR both) as the music is basically the representation of that character and ZUN did bring them back into the new entries from time to time.

Its the most popular song, it either wins(or at worst loses to stage 6 boss theme from the same game) every single year and it has absurd amount of remixes and memes around it. You can listen to U.N Owen was her? in pretty much every genre and variation you can imagine.
Zun still does some music for 17.5(and also does the writing for it) just not all of it. Usually its just for the newly appearing characters like the final boss from this game) while guests do remixes from returning characters. Imo the ".5" games have some of the best tracks of the entire series, for example the main menu theme from 17.5 is godlike.

This was the first Touhou game for Windows in 2002 so it sounds pretty unique in its sound imo due to this transition period between platforms. Prior to this, all games were on the PC-98 with FM synth sound.
As for your .5 comment, it depends, some of the games are by ZUN, some aren't. ZUN often makes side/extended stories hence the .3, .5, .8, type of stuff and usually have different styles of gameplay, though ZUN's works are always bullet hells but with a unique twist on them. For example, Touhou 9.5 Shoot The Bullet, stars Aya Shameimaru and it's dodging bullets and taking photos and made by solely ZUN. This one, 17.5 is a collaboration between ZUN and Twilight Frontier and an action game, and ZUN does in fact have at least 2 original compositions on this soundtrack for the character Yuuma Toutetsu. Typically in these collaborated games, ZUN takes on a more guest appearance role and let others remix his music. Touhou even has official fighting games by Twilight Frontier as well, all done in collaboration with ZUN.

10:00 many do, but others don't.
Sakuya's theme, "Lunar Clock Luna Dial" didn't carry over and instead she got another theme, "Flowering Night".
Another example I can think of is the many themes the character Marisa has, meaning most of the time she appears in a game she gets a different theme rather than a rearrangement, although she does get a ton of arrangements. (Completely not ZUN's favorite)
Also, you are kinda right, ".5" games get others to arrange ZUN's work, but not every single one, iirc every final boss's theme is made by ZUN.

With a quick scroll, I haven't seen it explained; Flandre Scarlet is a "young girl" (but also an ageless vampire, so in mind only) who has no perception of her own power. She "innocently" and casually kills and destroys things unintentionally and without even perceiving, so her older sister has locked her away on her lonesome to spare the world her destructive tendencies. I feel like the tragedy of a girl who just wants to be whimsical and have fun playing being locked in "solitary" because her playing brings forth death and destruction comes through in the song with the mix of melodic patterns you'd expect to hear coming out of a circus tent but twisted by minor chords.

So Touhou 6's music and characters remain iconic to this day, despite the game itself being quite dated. Anything before Touhou 6 had a much more limited soundfont due to being on the PC-98.

It also claims the #1 spot on the Touhou community's music popularity poll every year. It's the most popular song from the most popular game sin the series.
Also, Touhou 6 was the first game on Windows OS. The previous games had MIDI sound files, but TH6 usedd WAV files. ZUN didn't take full advantage of the new format, though, so it still sounds like a MIDI tile. TH7 is where you can really tell that the ZUN is using better equipment.

Specifically, what THEY, the fandom during the time of the arrangement’s creation, thought of her as the most popular theory, basically in retrospect a flanderized and bastardized version of an at the time basically non-existent character with a very not fleshed out personality, kinda like koishi somewhat though for her you can sorta blame kkhta for. Most people nowadays know that Flan wouldn’t murder everyone just because she can and don’t really like the older psycho version now that we know that we were way off the mark; still a great arrangement from Liz Triangle, but the lyrics and general theming of both animation and song kinda make me cringe now that we have hindsight.
I know you already know all this but the wording of your comment gives off big misinformation vibes and definitely could’ve been worded better, and I’m only referring to the sentence before the parenthesis that talks about “how Flan really is”, everything else is fine.

@@cchieffkiefbeff I mean, none of Flan's later appearances (Sunken Fossil World and Foul Detective Satori) have exactly dispelled the notion that she's insane in the membrane or have painted a picture of sanity in their portrayals of her. Sure, she's not necessarily at the "kill just because" level of madness depicted in many fanworks, but she's still definitely the go-to pick for "most likely to jump at the opportunity to choke a bish." (Poor Meiling.)

    • @cchieffkiefbeff

@@GrahamChapman It’s like, your average 2hu doesn’t really have morals because Gensokyo doesn’t and a majority of them are youkai, but at the same time most 2hus at least have social standards and boundaries, they’re unhinged but in a controlled sense and won’t randomly do things like choke eachother. But Flan, being in a basement for 495 years, doesn’t really have any social standards or really a grip on what “sociably moral by Gensokyo’s standards”, as such things like wanting to play but going way overboard happen, she just doesn’t and frankly probably doesn’t want to, have a good grip on what she should do, so she ends up choking meiling because “how else are you going to get any info out of her otherwise.” She’s childish in a way that unlike Remi, who knows when to restrain her childishness and how to act mature, she just lets everything out and also is spoiled so when she wants something, she’ll get it, no bars held.
As far as we can tell, she’s perfectly sane, or about as sane as a 2hu can be, and just like how ZUN says that Marisa being a very honest character who doesn’t hide anything makes her odd compared to everyone else, Flan too is very uncharacteristically blunt and willing to do whatever she needs to accomplish her goals without morals or societal rules of decency getting in the way, frankly because she probably doesn’t care.
tl;dr: flandre scarlet is unrestrained, not insane, by the world and it’s willingness to hold back
