    I'm surprised you haven't tried the dutch way of celebrating a festive dinner yet! It's called Gourmetten and most dutch people eat like this on Christmas. You have a little electric grill or little pans in the middle of the table and small pieces of meat, fish and vegetables, sauces, bread and salads and you just sit around the table all night cooking your own little meal all night long, so nobody is cooking dinner in the kitchen all day long. I really think you and the fam will love it! Lots of love from the Netherlands ❤️

    I think you would love it even more if you used olive oil instead of butter in the Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá. Here in Portugal, we mostly use olive oil to cook, it's a national treasure (although many mediterranean countries use it too ahahah)

    Loved these different meals! As a Brit who moved to Aus 12 years ago it’s very strange to wrap your head around not having a proper roast but let me tell you, it suuuucks cooking a roast in temps in the high 30’s. Did it once and never will again. Over here it tends to be more of a brunch/lunch situation with lots of fresh seafood and salads plus a Christmas ham, then I personally do a mini roast for a late evening meal when it’s a bit more enjoyable to eat. It’s mango and stone fruit season so there’s always a mango salad and usually a big bowl of cherries. Plus pavlova for dessert passion fruit on top.

      I live in the southeast USA so it's technically winter at Christmas but it can be hot here, like 80f (27c) sometimes and we definitely do more outdoor and fresh foods than some parts of the USA. When I was a kid my dad smoked porked loins or fried turkey every year. We have broccoli salad usually, cold dessert/cream salads as well, but we still do a lot of heavy traditional northern hemisphere stuff!

      As an Aussie that moved to Europe for work, to me it was the complete opposite! It was so strange having to adjust to celebrating Christmas in winter, on Christmas eve and at night! But, after more than 6 years in Europe, I couldn't see celebrating Christmas any other way! Plus over here we have all the Christmas markets and mulled wine

    The thing about Australia is that there are so many nationalities so everyone's Christmas looks a little bit different and is inspired by different cuisines. If you wanted to do a 'traditional' Australian Christmas it would probably just look exactly like an English one. Also lol Christmas in Australia is one of the hottest times of the year hence barbeques and salads

    Cabbage wraps are amazing.
    1) over season the meat as it boils out!
    2)put the oil in and fry them until the cabbage browns before putting water
    3) season the water with more than salt and pepper, I normally do it in veg stock.
    Please retry! It's amazing when it has move flavour

      Do they call lanttu swede in English? I was so confused why it was the Finnish christmas dinner and she kept talking about swedes 😅 I had a comment thread recently where I was trying to explain lanttulaatikko but appearently it’s an extremely rare vegetable that few know about outside of scandinavia, and the only translation I could find was rutabaga.
      (And we also have peas on christmas btw)

    • @suski2634
      @suski2634 2 роки тому

      @@Eucis93 haha I was sooo confused too when she kept talking about swedes while making Finnish food, but eventually I realised she was talking about lanttu, not Swedish people 😂 so I wasn’t familiar with the translation either, I’ve also heard that some people call lanttu ”turnip” (but that translates to nauris?)

    • @razzuie
      @razzuie 2 роки тому

      The English language seems to wildly use the word turnip for both kålrot/lanttu (big yellow)and majrova/nauris (small white and purple)depending on which English speaking country you’re in. But rutabaga/swede is lanttu and turnip is nauris.

      Haha, similar to the Hungarian version too, I think it's a sort of Eastern European thing.
      Also the carp and potato salad is the same in Hungary too, also very common to only have fish on Christmas eve and no meat. Although only one half of the country have the fish dinner, on the other half of the country stuffed cabbage leaves are the preferred dish. The cabbage rolls are almost the same as we use to eat here in Germany. We just fry them sharply before cooking it in the oven and the filling is minced meat, but mostly spiced like regular meat balls (pepper, salt, paprika, mustard, one egg). And the gravy is made out of the remaining in the pot and some tomato paste 🤗

    I loved this! Once went to Australia around Christmas time when I was a kid, it was mid-summer in the southern hemisphere and to say my little kid brain was confused is an understatement! To me, as a British person, Christmas means hot, hearty and rich foods and cold dark weather

      As an Australian I can honestly say I wish it was cold here at Christmas. Actually I wish it snowed😂😂 It doesn’t so we have what we have because it’s hot 🥵 😂

    Genuinely kind of amazed at how good your research is - I'm so used to people getting all sorts of info wrong about Portugal (understandable as we are a v small country all in all) but you were spot on!

    I love auvgolemono!! I'm Dutch but during uni I lived together with my Cypriot friend, and she always used to make auvgolemono for me whenever I wasn't feeling well. It's the BEST medicine!

    I love that you included Greece because I feel like in these videos, people rarely do so! The chicken lemon soup is one of my favs in general because of how creamy it is. I've honestly havent heard of people making pork for Christmas but the cabbage dish seems different to what my family makes. A good tip is to actually boil the head of cabbage until its more tender so that it prevents it from breaking! It just seemed underseasoned to me, it can be in the same flavours as the chicken soup. And yes greek food has A LOT of lemon, I use lemon in everything!

    Hi. I'm so happy you tried the polish dishes. At my house, we do the 'ryba po grecku' day before. So that the fish would get all the flavours from vegetables with spices. You did a great job :D I love your videos about Christmas dinners. Greetings from Poland ❤

    I loved these. And I loved looking at Portugal. Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá is a great dish, although my favourite is creamy Bacalhau com Natas. During Christmas, my family normally has cooked octopus with roasted new england and sweet potatoes as a main. There is also a cog fish version (Polvo or Bacalhau à Lagareiro).

    It's incredible how much work you put in videos! Polish wigilia for me exist only with tons of pierogies but also we eats lot of sweets afterwards.

    So happy you enjoyed the portuguese dish ☺️
    The only thing is, I’ve never seen anyone use melted butter, in my family we always use olive oil. Oh and we mix the egg with everything else or do a layer of it on top
