I love 2 things about this Video:
1 - taking a Hawk for a hoon at low level.
2 - the practiced voice of the British Pilot.
How refreshing, a proper, real UA-cam video with no crappy and inappropriate music or shouty egotistical knucklehead spoiling it with idiotic and self-indulgent nonsense, just information and description in the real world.

This is what I was supposed to do. If any young Air Cadets read this, I did 500 flights in gliders, 31 solos and lots of flying in Bulldogs. I got tempted into a career in finance and I'm now 36 & head trader on a stockbroking desk. Money comes and goes, give flying jets a shot or you'll regret it for the rest of your life! Dont sit behind a desk! Good luck! 😎👍
I made a similar mistake. Went into engineering instead of flying. Regretted it ever since I realised I was too old to go back and give it a try.

Lots of Gliders yes, Bulldog no, Chipmunk yes. Those were the days. I find it amazing that between the ages of 13-19 I took it all for granted. Unfortunately for me (or should it be fortunate) I was diagnosed with high frequency deafness which put a stop to any delusions of grandeur. But I always think back to my days at 1341 sqn ATC. Happy days indeed.
But wait until you see a video of me completing project management spreadsheets and talking on meaningless conference calls...boy will you be one jealous pilot.

Flying low level through those lakes and valleys was spectacular and the scenery was amazing, one of the best aviation videos I've seen and the commentary was excellent!
General speaking we try to fly OVER lakes and THROUGH valleys.......
Flying like this might seem like fun and boy it is occasionally. However, it’s actually quite rare that you can sit back and enjoy it because you are constantly thinking about what you should be thinking about. These guys are under a lot of pressure to perform to a very high standard safely.
I go to the lake district on a regular basis and love it when I'm sitting down for a tea and then straight down windermere vomw the fast jets....so cool.
I live near 7:07, no lakes here, it is Scotland, so we only have Lochs!

Love it...."these aircraft are quite expensive, don't want to drop one in a field", as calm as you could get. What about you and your mate? You seem much more worried about the aircraft than you are of your lives! I'm totally fascinated yet terrified of planes. You brave men, well done.
My wife and I were driving through the Valley towards Moffat on way back from our holiday and saw 3 Tornados 'giving it large'... Amazing sight and sound. Brilliant video.

Tim, Sir, Excellent video. Good clean Narration, easy to uinderstand and exactly clear.After my 24 year stint, I did a little Heavy Goods work between Warrington and Cumbernauld. Sometimes I would see one of 4FTS Hawk Trainers and it would give me a lift. Pump the air and yell (quietly) 'Go lads'. Other low level aircraft was always a good sign we were accomplishing something in the RAF, and to this day, I am lifted when a Mil fast jet goes overhead, sadly, not so frequent these days. Good job Tim, my respects to you.
In a book on the service of the North America P-51 Mustang in the Royal Swedish Airforce, swedish designation J-26, there is story told by one of the pilots about the difficulty of judging altitude over smooth surfaces.
He describes a low flying exercise mission during a sunny winters day, on which the return leg was flewn low over a large frozen lake, with a smooth sheet of new dry snow on it.
As it happened, an acquaintance to the base commander(?) was at the shore of the lake, and saw this Mustang fly by, "real fast and real low".
When the pilot had landed and was in debrief, the base commander came in, asking if everything was okey; with the pilot and the plane.
The pilot of course asked regarding this "particular interest", and was told that the acquaintance had called, worried that something might have happend.
This as the pilot had flown so low, that the propeller blast and wake, had drawn up a plume of snow after the aircraft, that was told to have been a fair bit higher than the top of the fin.
The pilot had a little after-the-fact chock, but now knew how difficult it is to judge one's altitude over a snow covered frozen lake.

That was 15 minutes of my life that was well spent. Cool calm and collected voiceover narrating the progress of the flight, what the pilot doing, what he was looking out for and all the time checking fuel levels while making sure they dont fly into some guy on a paraglider. Absolutely great with fabulous scenery.

Thanks. I grew up mid Wales with jets from Valley and various other bases screaming over on a daily basis. I absolutely loved it and still have a crick in my neck from straining to see it all! a back seat ride is top of my bucket list!
I had the honour to fly Hawks as a student on exchange from Canada. I was taught by the best low level fast jet pilots in the world! I remember unconsciously putting my hands in front of the stick when my instructor (a former Buccaneer pilot) was introducing me to low level over the Irish Sea, as he descended to about 30 feet above the water!

As a fighter pilot, one never, or I never, gave a second thought about how risky it was. My comment wasn't meant to dissuade anyone from becoming a fighter pilot, although it may have come across as such. We all take risks just from wandering around this planet :)

This brought back some happy memories! I flew in the back seat as part of my FAC course many years ago. After several medium-level sorties, we dropped to 250 for our first low-level run. We had a bird strike on the very first run and went through all of the procedures you spoke of in the video. Although exciting in itself, I felt robbed that I didn't get to fly a few more :-). The main thing I took away from it was just how much information the pilot has to digest, as well as flying the plane safely. I sat nonchalantly in the back with a paper map not needing to do anything except look for the target on the ground that was being described by the other students - it's bloody hard! Now I am one of the paragliders you talk of - though in South Wales mainly. Great video.
Did low-level nav when I was in training as a U.S. Naval aviator, in TA-4J Skyhawks, circa 1981, over south Texas. Not NEARLY as picturesque. Really enjoyed this video.

@Zach Michaelis South Texas was chosen, I believe, because you can crash an airplane down there without danger of damaging anything valuable. There are landmarks to use as waypoints. One of your challenges is to learn how to recognize them from the air.

Good camera angles. Narration flow is good (thanks for no music).
The flat water height awareness is quite scary and can be seen in the footage.
Workload is surprisingly high, it is a bonus to have an aviator sat in the rear seat.

Love this. The flying is cool and all, but the narration of wtf is actually going on is what makes this video awesome, gives you an insight as to what's really happening and good explanations of why you guys are doing what you're doing, that's the meat and potatoes. Flying is so much more than point the nose and go forward.

Worked with many pilots from RN and RAF and they always seem so calm when explaining lots of information. Great video, like others have said so glad no music, makes it so interesting listening to the conversation.

The Hawk T2 is the sexiest jet ever made, and she handled like it too - the transition from Taccano to Hawk was so much better than Bulldog to Provost - and the Chipmunk was incredible too. The Sedbergh Tx glider with no canopy though... winched to 1000ft and no chute at age 14 as a cadet; extreme sports? We knew how to play in the 80’s - then came health and safety.....
Those annoying bloody drones are far more worrisome than any paraglider - great video!
The hawk is nice, without doubt. I flew back seat in its predecessor, the Folland Gnat as used by the Famous Red Arrows in the sixties and seventies. Bit jelly of your gliding experiance.

Brilliant video. The low key humor is great. Beginning pilot here (haven't lost my tail feathers yet), so the mental processes needed and where your mind is at any time is a great help. The reverse checklist on reaching altitude is new to me, but really drives home the use of a checklist. Thanks!

This was an absolute nostalgia fest! I did similar trips in Folland Gnats when training at Valley in 1976, but in those days we weren't allowed through the Lake District so went up through the Dales before crossing into southern Scotland. All done with paper map and stopwatch and eye-balling height as we had no rad alt. It was the hardest work I ever did, and the most fun. Sigh!

Thoroughly enjoyed the video. I worked on Hawk flight dynamics at Hawker Siddeley back in the early 1970's - good to see its still flying. Re paragliders, concur with the previous commentator. In the UK most XC happens in thermal activity, so is probably well above you when low flying, except when ridge lines are used in the mountains. You're also not likely to see us above cloudbase. But most XC, particularly down south, is in the few thousand feet below and between thermal clouds, so watch out when flying VFR in that zone. Back in the late 1970's, my colleague, Doug Thorby who was the senior Loads Aerodynamicist at the time, showed me a flight path recording of a Hawk avoiding a glider - it pulled up from 1g to 8g in about 0.4 seconds - he was teasing me and said "I bet you can't do that with an active control system". Well actually you can, but not with the kind fitted to the current generation of fighters. Anyway, it gives me some comfort that if you see us, from the Hawk, you can miss us. We can hear you before we see you, but can't remotely pull clear of your flight path that fast.

Thanks for sharing Tim, it's really interesting to get this view and persepective. We have a lot of BHPA Paragliding RAF pilots in our club and its lovely share the different expieriences. We hope to a organise a more formal talk in 2016 between the two to share ideas on flight safety etc. Paragliders who are simply ridge soaring will likely issue a CANP to notify the military. However in the south of the UK when its a thermic day, there are usually many hundreds of paragliders flying VFR in class G at varying altitudes up to whatever cloud base is of the day but crucially can be flying routes of hundreds of kms. Also with modern paragliders they have better into wind glide so can now vary their routes and flying out and returns. Unless there is a flying competition being held where a Notam is issued like the sailplane pilots use the Cross Country Paragliding pilot is just adopting "see and be seen" although most PGing pilots are flying with live trackers.

Fantastic video with great information. I grew up watching fast jets knocking the chimney pots off our house in North Wales & wanted to fly so much. These days my wife's family are from Valley and we lived there for a while too, so the base there was part of the community. It's great to see footage like this and we get to see how hard you guys have to work at it to make the grade.

This makes me miss low-level flying even more in the UK after watching this. We were going a bit slower but a bit lower though. 2 miles a minute and down to 50 feet. If you don’t like the weather in the UK, wait 15 minutes, it will change.

Absolutely fantastic sir. Don’t do twitting so can only thank you on here. Ex-RAF plummer. Couldn’t be a pilot in my day due to my poor eyesight. Dream was to fly the Tonka (Tornado). Nearest I get to it these days is DCS or FSX.

Aah, fuel. Now that's important. For relaxation, I fired up FS2020 and took out an Airbus 320neo yesterday from Newcastle planning to fly it to Tenerife with Bolero playing as I did so. (really nice when the fluffy clouds are floating by below you at a cruise alt. of 30,000 ft) Well silly bugger that I am, I forgot to fully fuel her up on the setup page and I ended up binning it in the drink off the coast of Portugal. Did a hell of a job gliding it down tho. if I do say so myself. (I think my cruise efficiency needs work too lol) I paid 80 quid for this thing. Where's my sea ditching ability and my EH-101 rescue helicopter? Bunch of amateurs these Microsoft lot. All I got was this lame message box saying I'd hit an object and crashed. Yeah I hit an object alright, the bloody North Atlantic! Needless to say I'm not applying for my commercial pilot's licence yet haha. Awesome video Tim, it's awesome footage of FJP's in action but it's also a tutorial on how to calmly manage life events as they arise jumping up in front of you at seemingly breakneck speed sometimes.

IanHimself I’ve gone for an aviation medical test at Heathrow airport in the U.K. so that I could get my class 2 for a PPL, but my colour vision is so poor I even have restrictions on that such as being unable to fly at night. I have considerably bad colour vision, but at least I can still get my PPL.
Deficient or blind?
IanHimself no light gun test, but I did do a CAD test, where I was told that I was severely deutan deficient.
Harry Ward interesting, I’m color deficient but I’m still in commercial flight school with a second class medical. I was originally restricted but did further testing to get unrestricted

I remember when we were hang gliding at around 1200 ft out of Newtown in the Welsh borders the entire Red Arrows in loose transit formation passed beneath us. It was an attention grabbing experience.
