Chinatown Bangkok blew me away! Not what I was expecting and not just a food vlog...

- In today's video we are blows away by Chinatown Bangkok! This place exceeded any expectation I had! When my best friend came to visit me from The Netherlands we got an amazing opportunity (thank you Mon!) to spend some time traveling just the two of us like we did when we were 20 years.
Saskia suggested to visit Chinatown, which did not sound too appealing to me but I agreed. I had an idea that Chinatown was just all about food and local old Thai-Chinese life. Turns out there is so much more to Chinatown! Food of course, but so much more that that; street art, architecture, amazing accommodation, galleries and the kindest people. And of course, food too!
If you plan to visit Chinatown, here are some of the places we visited:

Absolutely loved this video, Mayan! I was sad when it ended, I wanted more! Bangkok’s Chinatown is truly unique! Love the colors, the art work on the walls, the old world vibe! If I saw a long line at an eatery I would definitely get in line, but you did it right by going when there was no line! Smart!! Looking forward to more of your videos!❤️ Have a great time with your bff!
Ahhh so sweet! Now I feel bad I cut many things out... I didn't want it to be too long. But honestly the place is so inspiring and way over my expectations. I want to go back right now!
Yes, then you can do more video!😃❤️
@@michelleotani8901 next video, we are back to the Wooda House, I think you're gonna like it!
Me, too!!!!!!
@@SweetLifeLantaPerhaps a part 2???? Very fun video!!!!
😍😍😍
OMG, I absolutely adored watching your video about China-Town in Bangkok! The stunning visuals, incredible street art, and wonderful atmosphere were just fantastic. Your friend Saskia really nailed it. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the two of you exploring, indulging in delicious food and drinks. Thanks for introducing us to that amazing Airbnb. This truly motivates me to visit the place. Keep up the fantastic work❤
Lovely! I'm so happy this video got you excited. Big hugs!
I love the shophouse accommodations . It's so authentic and puts you in another world . A generic hotel room is boring.
Totally agree! This one specifically really blew me away, so unique
Singha beer in brown bottle was introduced/produced into Thailand about 100 years ago using German recipe by King Rama VI court official Pirompakdi family ancestor. It was highly appreciated by both Thai and expat drinkers. Even though other local brand was introduced one after another but could not shake Singha's dominance and died away until Thai Beverages, the largest and most dominant liquor producer (mostly rum and white spirit) in Thailand, decided to partner with Carlsberg to produce the Carlsberg brand locally to compete with Singha. It also resulted in a failure to challenge Singha. Both sides gradually drifted apart and Carlsberg was eventually no longer produced locally. Before the final breakup, Thai Beverages introduced Chang (Elephant) beer in green bottle, which was much cheaper to gain market share from Singha. It was successful in a few years after heavy promotion and discounted price, and became No.1 seller. This was the reason that Carlsberg decided to quit the Thai market as it seemed its Thai partner did not care to promote Carlsberg anymore after Chang beer was successfully introduced. Singha did not give in and introduced Leo in brown bottle at the same price of Chang and it instantly became a success as well. Now, Chang and Leo are neck and neck, dominating local Thai beer market. Owners of Chang/rum/white spirit and Singha/Leo are Thai billionaires.
Note: Alcohol sale is banned on religious holidays and the evening prior to general election day and the election day itself. On a regular day, alcohol sale is available from 11.00-14.00 and 17.00-24.00 at 7-11 and mini/super stores, Lotus or Big C. However, this is Thailand and you can always buy your favorite beer/liquor at your small convenient store in your village at all hours (if the store opens). Some shops stay open until 2 am on Friday and Saturday in some villages. Don't know why the police ignore those small shops selling alcohol at all hours. BTW, Chang/Leo in 325 ml can costs 36-39 baht at neighboring village stores but 39 baht at 7-11.
In Thailand, eateries serve cold beer with ice, either directly in the glass or you can choose to pick ice cubes from the bucket yourself. The reason is obvious. It's damn hot most of the year in Thailand.
Great summary Kamol! Leo beer is definitely the best. The tall bottles are still only 57 baht at 7. Like many other farang who live here, i use a neoprene (wetsuit rubber) cooler so i don't need to pollute my beer with ice/water 555
For two girls from the Netherlands I'm surprised that you didn't make a special mention of the street art at 8:52 based on Van Gogh's Starry Night.
Oh yeah! So true! Great eye!
Wow!!! Far out! Thanks for noticing. There's just so much creativity jammed in a small place. I thought perhaps the girls had noticed it; ergo the pose in front of it, but it was just serendipitous, which makes it the more special.
Thank you for pointing this out! I missed it and went back to play the video again. The art looks amazing. Did enjoy the starry night Bangkok version. Greetings from Amsterdam 🇳🇱🌷🧀🚲⛸️❤️🤍💙
I know juggling time between running a business and looking after the family is not easy but will certainly love to see more of your traveling and indulging in the local customs, food & culture. Keep the videos coming.
I would love to! But indeed, it's really difficult sometimes to find the time to film, plan the video or even just get straight what I want to say 😂😂😂 but as the kids get older, it's getting easier and easier for sure! UA-cam is a marathon, and I've just started running!

Sweet Life, for sure!!!! Seeing you and your BFF embracing life and adventuring together (again!) is the tonic I needed today. Your channel’s one of my favorites. I recently gleaned and culled a bunch of channels I had accumulated during lockdown, as life has changed. Yours was one I gladly kept and watch every video from, sometimes even rewatch them. Sending you and yours love and light from NE Florida.
Wow Betsy! Your words are like music to my ears. It means a lot to stay one of your favorite channels! I hope I can keep making content that you love. Big hugs!
This place looks amazing… I would love to visit here and that home you stayed in is beautiful.
Hi Gabriela! I see it's your first comment! So nice! Feel free to tell us something about yourself!
Another class act! Loved the colorful and creative side of Bangkok that you and Saskia showed us. So many interesting things to see, that I had to see this video a few times. I especially love that interesting shot of the photogenic cat popping up here and there. Your joi de vivre is contageous, Mayaan! Thanks for the trip.
Haha! You're the best! Did you know, Saskia had a while that she was taking photos of cats in the window. In The Netherlands a lot of the houses are built with a big window out to the street and a lot of people have cats who then pop up in the window for some sunny rays. I think you would have loved this serie!
Enjoy your trip in Bangkok/ I love you guys/ Thank for sharing your video.🌺🎈👭
Thank you! Have you ever been to Chinatown? How did you like it?
Chinese don’t mind about queening up for something good and special 😂
I’d say go for it
You’re not gonna be disappointed
Haha yeah! We had to try it!
Im a thai and if I see long que like this BYE BYE hahahaa Im sure there are many good food stalls around there where it werent on social media.Shouldnt be hard to find.
Hahaha totally agree 💯
The movie "Big trouble in little China" always comes to mind in these places. Yeah, I think lot's of random video capture and less overthinking is the way forward here. The Chinese tradition, culture, and cuisine has been extraordinary all over the world. Thanks for sharing this story.
Nice!
Mayaan what a lovely video thank you, I didnt want it to end! 😊 i love how they city have art on the walls instead of graffiti. That was a nice air bnb you stayed in so refreshing and calming.
Felt the same ... so I watched it again and again.
Thank you guys for so much love!
Excellent video Maayan. It was nice to get away with your friend and experience some amazing areas of Bangkok, such a vibrant city. That air B & B much preferable to staying in a hotel and a comfortable price too. Cheers 🤩
So real and authentic ... like Mayaan herself, and her friend, too. Must be a Dutch thing.
Yeah it was so unexpectedly amazing! I really didn't want to visit Bangkok at first. I was like, Thailand is so beautiful and there are so many amazing places, why does she want to go to Bangkok of all places?! But it was her call and I'm so happy I followed!
I like your Thai accent. And also like your video editing style
Thank you so much! ❤
12:56 I wonder what she thinks of the beer there since she is from the Netherlands :)
I don't think she's a real beer snob so probably she likes it. Thai beer is pretty good but I'm not an expert either 😉 but I will definitely ask her.
Thank you Ma'ayan for this lovely video.
I enjoy all of your videos.!
You bring Thailand to my smartphone!
Hope to visit you in reality one day soon.
Meanwhile, SHALOM from Nahalal, Israel.
Love your video China town is another Bangkok's standpoint...🌈🎶🌈
Absolutely 💯
Great job Mayan, I'm convinced!
I like your channel very much, authentic and informative. Saskia is beautiful and nice. It’s valuable to have a such good friend. Many greetings from Germany 🇩🇪❤
Thanks lovely!
What wonderful inspirations- chinatown is really worth a visit.I've been there too and was just impressed as you, i've always stopped there and also at the big market in Bangkok and then had it shipped to Germany by ship- that was the cheapest way. But that was 20 years ago😂 - it was always my dream to open a shop here with great things from Thailand 😉.Back then there were no smartphones and only slow internet and you always had to go to internet cafes to write an email😂....all informations about shops and food came from the lonely planet books😉... but after all the impressions i was always happy if i could continue flying to an island to relax. A wonderful trip for you friend- i love your friendship❤- many thanks for sharing and i hope Manu and Milli love the waving cat- greetings from Germany 😘
I do remember that time with internet café! I remember trying to arrange a meeting with our friend who was also traveling. The whole process took several days of us and him getting to internet cafés every few days to read what the other one said. Life has changed so much since then!
Awesome VDO!,🎉 Thanks for shared the new aspect of Chinatown. Yellow noodle looks very yummy.
When you see a long queue in front of the restaurant, join the queue because the locals knows best unless you cannot wait or have better options. Place must be delicious n cheap.
Hahaha that's right! But it's not locals in the line, but thousands of tourists from around the world who come to visit Chinatown and read about these top-notch streetfood places. Did you know Chinatown is full of eateries that are mentioned in the Michelin streetfood guide? So many of them. And there is even an organised tour you can take to visit them all in one day! It's probably a really cool and delicious thing to do when you visit Bangkok.
@@SweetLifeLanta Thanks for the tip.
1st to write ❤ 😂
Hi uncle! Thanks for being the first today! How did you like the video?
@@SweetLifeLantaYour videos as usual is nothing short of 1st class n that’s why I am always back for more. So addictive 😂 😆 😝 Two western women walking in Thailand Chinatown. If I am in your shoes, I would talk to the local using English or a word or two in Thai, pretending you can’t speak Thai. By the time they know your splendid mastery of their language, they will be blown away. Highly impressed lady.
@@UncleDougDeli hahaha! Yeah, I saw that's a whole trend on youtube! Maybe I should do that for more views 😉 but I kinda feel I'm too old to capitalise on that 🤣🤣🤣. Thanks for always coming back for more, I appreciate it! ❤️
@@SweetLifeLanta Too kind to be so sneaky.
In addition to a great video, your Thai accent is exceptional.🥰🥰
Wow thank you!
I really enjoy your video so much. This is too short please do more longer in the next video. Khob Khun Kha ❤
Oh... thank you!
Thank you for spotlighting BK Chinatown. Didn’t know anything about it until you shared with us.
I love to stay🎉
Thanks for recommending.
I would like to be one of the Thai people who are thankful that both of you like Thailand. I feel like I'm Thai because I've been here for a long time. (heard in a shop that makes amulet frames) We don't skimp on the language like Laos and Cambodia, where even people in the country like to think that if you speak Thai, you'll forget your country. We are happy that every country learns our culture, our language and is friendly with us. We will return double happiness to those who have been kind to us. Love Thailand. Thailand and Thai people will love you.
I never knew that a little point of China Town till I watched your video.Thank you 😊😊😊
Thank you for a super tour of the Chinatown of Bangkok! I really loved it!! ❤
Yes, love you share china town. I been to Bangkok but never go to china town. 👍❤️
I know that restaurant with a long queue. It has been like that since before the internet discovered it, Long running, very good food.
Great! I love visiting Chinatowns when I travel. I spent a Chinese New Year in Bangkok's Chinatown. It was a fun experience. I love all the murals and colour. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜
Wow amazing! I should try visit during Chinese New year. Sounds like a special experience!
Good question; what do you do when you see a long line of clients waiting to get in a restaurant. My solution is always the same ; if it’s a long line of locals, I join the line. if it’s a long line of tourists like me, I don’t.
I love this video I am Thai but niw I got married with retired man in UK live here 2years ago but we plan to go every year to travel there thanks for share.
it's a good one and the queue flows fairly quickly.
The hostel is so awesome, I really like it.

I so get it. I will feel the same if i leave one day. Which I will for sure. But Thailand will always be my home.
Michlin star that is. The queue is long for that.
Merci depuis la Nouvelle-Calédonie. 🌺🌿🇫🇷
Awesome video. Inspires me to learn the Thai language & explore the cultures & yummy food while trying to retire here in Thailand. When I first landed in Bangkok I stayed (airbnb website) in a place called the Cottage (near the airport) for a couple of days. Very good accommodations at a budget price with an awesome breakfast buffet, large mall around the corner, & a unique coffee shop down the street that has exotic pets inside (very cool).
Amazing! Thanks so much for sharing and watching!
If it has a queue, I wait for my tour, is the same every where in the world .
Fabulous video ! 🙏💕🌷🇳🇱

Yeah please do! For me it was also a big surprise and I had been to Bangkok many times before!

Should you ever go back to that restaurant with the long queue, their signature dish is Chinese rolled noodles (menu in English), however the best thing there I would say is the duck soup or stew with pickled limes.
Oh thanks! Will try next time!
Each unit of an old shophouse on a major street in Chinatown costs about $1.2M. And they are typically in a old and dingy condition.
Wow!
