Salvaging a Roadkill Moose in Alaska

- We jump at the opportunity to salvage a roadkill moose when we receive an unexpected phone call one evening. Little sleep and a massive amount of hard work is a small price to pay for priceless moose meat. We are grateful to have the processing behind us and for warm full bellies this winter.
Special thank you to Von and Ryan from Wildwood Off Grid Alaska ❤️ Check them out if you haven't already!

Been watching this channel for years, I really appreciate how everything they do is always done in earnest. I love how they explain steps, processes, and reasons behind each action, and I love when they show their mistakes and learning moments. This channel helps me unwind, and I am grateful there's nothing political, trendy, preachy or insincere about it. Probs my favorite UA-cam channel of all time.
3428 You could not have said it any better.
And they are both very articulate. Not a lot of umm and uhhs.
Eric’s reaction to Ariel’s sneeze is freakin priceless.
And just after she said " It's not very spicy " 😁🤣
It was the cayenne pepper 😂
🤣
32:41- 😂
😂😂😂
As an ex chef who did a lot of butchery, I can appreciate the amount of work that took!
And in the cold, with the meat freezing, well done both of you.
So glad such a precious resource was salvaged, I hate food waste.
Looking forward to your many recipes!
Back in the 1950's my parents were poor college kids in Fairbanks. They survived on road kill moose and were always sooo greatful for it. Glad you got to salvage another moose. Good stuff.
Poor college kids => Oxymoron
Glad you folks were able to salvage that poor moose.
I love how much respect and appreciation you showed that moose.
I’ve never seen anything quite like tonight’s content. I cannot imagine doing what the 2 of you have done. Such incredible team work, excellent problem solving and just plain very hard work! I’m thrilled for you to reap the blessing of all this salvaged meat. Susan
In the kindest way possible, Arielle, you are a BEAST woman. I think you should win the "Alaskan Woman of The Year Award". You and Eric toughed that one out, but I know you practically crawled inside that moose to save that meat. Well done both of you!!!!!
50 lbs sausage, 40 hamburger and 30 of roast/steaks. Ariel is a champion! You both worked so much to get this done quickly! Nice to see you with friends and those final biscuits looked to die for.
The most Alaskan thing ever. Thanks for sharing it with us.
i always thought roadkill must taste awful because the blood and all the liquids stays inside and spoil the meat.
In most cases for this style list in my understanding is it has to be a fresh hit, certain temps, and someone has to be able to come out almost immediately within a certain time frame. So wouldn’t be too far off someone that drags a deer out before bleeding/disemboweling it.
I had to make a quick comment. I just adore you two as a committed married couple who work together as a well oiled machine even when answering an emergency road kill call from your community. As a city girl, who is now an old bird, there’s nothing simple nor easy about your lifestyle. However, it’s wonderful to watch and I always look forward to new reels from my favorite Alaskan team. Always praying for your safety and wellbeing. ❤️🙏😇🎁😁⭐️👍
ARIEL AND ERIC THANKS FOR TAKING ME ON ANOTHER ONE OF YOUR SPECIAL ADVENTURES!!!!!.ALL I CAN SAY IS, WHAT A TEAM!!!!.❤🎉😊
I love how Ariel separates the hide from the meat. Such precision. ❤
Excellent work, you two. Such an immense task in nasty conditions, and you still have the patience to film it all for your viewers. You guys really are a fantastic team. Enjoy the upcoming feasts!
Thank you guys for another brilliant video. When Arielle said she thanked the moose, that was a beautiful time honoured way of thanking all of nature, and the spirits of the animals that have died, for giving you food to survive. That mooses mother fed her to survive, and now she will feed you, the cycle never ends. Mother Gaia knows what she is doing. Goddess blessings to you both. Peter U.K 🙏 🙏
Such hard work but I bet the food tastes so much better and is really appreciated since you know the effort and time it took to obtain it. Having to get it at a minutes notice, driving in winter an hour and a half, figuring out how to load it, butchering, processing. You all do it so well and work as a great team. Enjoy that wonderful bounty provided to you. Love a full freezer and how grateful it makes you feel.
Well bless her sweet Merce. She really got hit hard. Bless her heart. I’m glad y’all were able to get the meat from her. It is wonderful that the highway patrol has the list for people to get the roadkill. What a great system.
It's so sad seeing such a gorgeous animal deceased like that, but I know you two will treat her with respect and utilize everything from her body. RIP Moose
Food honey.
No Whole Foods.
Blessings
i have to say as a vegan this video was a bit harder to watch but i really respect how you guys get your food - Super sustainable and inspiring!
I personally appreciate your comment a bunch...I am just tired of the internet wars between militant carnivores and vegans. This couple are one of the nicest people on UA-cam and they just harvested the animal to survive the winter treating the animal integrity and respect. Thank you again for your empathy and common sense.
Honestly, taking an animal from the side of the road that was killed already and making use of every part possible is the most vegan thing ever. This animal lived it's best free life until it met a quick end, and then the parts were utilized for human sustenance INSTEAD of factory farm animals.
As a former vegan, I respect your ability and willingness to be understanding and accepting of other's beliefs and way of life, different as they may be. 😉
Once again we are treated to the integrity & generosity of these 2 amazing Alaskan dwellers. Who else could make the pick up and butchering of a huge moose roadkill so utterly entertaining and educational all at the same time. To have Von join you Eric and Arielle really and truly warmed my heart. I can't imagine 3 people I'd rather have together sharing this incredible experience with. Such a blessing to get that much meat into your freezer for winter, esp when so much was not usable. Thankyou again for sharing ALASKA the Frozen North thru the eyes of Eric & Arielle plus a cameo appearance of VON. 🇦🇺🤗🙏💞👍👌✌️👏❤️🇺🇸
Beautiful! Excellent job you two! So glad you’ll have meat for the winter. You never forget about sharing the wealth with your furry and feathered friends either!
So happy the moose meat was saved. We’ve put two deer in the freezer so far this year.
I think that's really one of the best things for us as well to think about how folks can make good use of the meat even though it was a sad situation.
So many white tail deer are hit around our area in IL, so many accidents.
@ahhmeeb9354 that's because your Governor bans all the guns to legally harvest them...
The best thing is the moose doesn't go to waste and you all benefit from its departure. That much damage looks like it was hit by a plow truck.
@@SimpleLivingAlaska puppies gonna love it!
Arielle, it is obvious that you truly enjoy diving right into recovering what can be saved from a road kill moose. I mean you are a knife wheeling , de-Boning, dissecting machine. No visible intimidation or hesitation. Just about getting it done! Eric you always come up with a plan like loading a full grown moose on to a sled with a snowmobile and dragging it all up on a three foot high trailer. I’m sure when you headed home you realized the work had just begun. Great recovery you two!
Awesome video guys thanks for sharing so many folks are separated from their food this is a great connection for them to see!!!!
Thank you ❤
I absolutely love these process videos. You guy’s always make the most of everything you get.❤
Eric, why don't you add an electric winch from Harbor Freight to the tongue of the trailer? You have all the tools to do that, and the skills. Then you will have a perfect trailer set-up.
It's awesome that you guys got so much meat from that poor moose. When I saw what the inside looked like I was wondering how much you guys were going to get. It was also amazing to see someone else helping you guys out! Also of course for me thank you for showing us Pepper and that the dogs are still going strong. I love your guys clear birdfeeder!
thank you for filming this for us and sharing in your lives with us. AWESOME AWESOME.
What an awesome team you 2 are , a testament to how kind & caring a marriage should be, bless you guys , thank you for sharing your lives with us , love from Belinda / South Africa
You two are awe inspiring! So happy you got this exciting news. You both work so hard but happily for everything you have.
WOW ! You two are incredible for your energy, integrity and sharing content with us.
You guys are the best problem solvers ever. The way you figured out how to load that moose on the trailer was great! What a blessing to get that meat!
It’s such a blessing. You guys really worked hard. Well deserved reward
You rock Arielle with all that cutting up needed. Eric too! Then Von showed up, she's awesome too! Thanks for sharing
After watching the video I am reminded of movie Fargo. Main concern is spillage from colon. Stomach and small intestines usually don’t have bacteria that cause great concern. Keep up the good work.
Lots of work but so worth it!! We got a deer this year that had been hit. Still standing when the officer dispatched him.He was bleeding out from his liver. Only damage. About 70lbs and so grateful to our neighbors who helped us with it!!
Being a place that's crazy cold I don't get how meat goes bad out there! I came here cause I've heard that people are sent out to get roadkill. Thank you for not letting her go to waste.
You two are amazing. Super glad you have this precious meat for your long winter. Please stay safe and stay as wonderful as you both are! Thank you Vonn for coming and helping. Your friendship I am sure is growing strong.
It’s truly unfortunate for the moose. But I’m thrilled that you two get to have her. She looks huges! That will bring you lots of meat for this winter. It’s good to see your neighbor / friend helping you out.
Awesome job guys!!!! Sad that the moose died, but fantastic that you were able to save so much from it! What a blessing!!! Love you guys ❤❤❤❤
As a hunter, I appreciate the effort you both put into salvaging this renewable resource. Kudos to you both
I ❤️ ALL of your vids, you guys put in such hard work (compared to most) & you NEVER whine or complain. This vid was very interesting, TY 🙏 for sharing it with us! Your attitudes and energy are over the top (good). Im going to watch it again!
I was so excited when i saw the title, and I'm happy it all worked out! I can't wait to see all the food you are going to be making. You guys rock, and Ariel was on a mission👏🙌💪
Great job, you two! So much hard work, but it's so worth it for stocking the larder! It's funny to see how much the birds enjoy the meat - it was one of your early chicken videos that introduced that idea to me.. :)
What a blessing. WOW that moose was really badly off. I’m glad you were able to make the best of a sad situation. You guys work so hard, but you work well together. ❤😊
It was so nice to see friends/neighbours included.
After watching this my mouth is watering for some good Moose meat. Great job Ariel and Eric. What a surprising amount of free meat that will make your winter better.
I remember once my uncle came back to the cabin up north saying a deer had run into the truck. My dad looked in the bed and said, oh it wasn’t dead? My uncle told him that yes, it was dead. My dad’s like, where is it then?! And he jumped in the truck and raced back to get it😆
I also remember being taught how to make sage pork sausage by a friend of the family, an elderly country gentleman in South Carolina who used a giant old hand grinder that he modified and electrified.
It’s what I love most about your channel, the memories it triggers. Thanks for posting.
Wow... you guys are so blessed! The food you guys cooked from this kill looks beyond amazing! So awesome that you guys can live off the land like you do.
What a major blessing that meat is!! So happy for you guys! Merry Christmas!!
Double grind makes the best consistency! Not only blends the spices, but it also gives the perfect mouth feel.
People working hard for their keep is sadly becoming a lost skill. I so admire your way of life. Nothing going to waste, and an animal that would have rotted in a roadside ditch will give sustenance to good people willing to put in the work necessary to salvage what's left. You are living a pure life, and I envy you. Thanks for sharing, and I hope you gain enough followers to make you want for nothing. You two truly deserve it!
I am so happy for you guys for being able to harvest a moose this year!
💚 Love this content! Glad some of the poor, mangled moose cow could be saved for you and your friends. What a mess she was 😢. Surprised YT allows this whole processing footage, but very glad to be able to observe. You're set for the winter with moose meat! Love seeing the birds, chickens and dogs enjoy also. 💚
Well done,I was so excited when I read the caption. A pity a great portion of the wonderful moose was not salvageable but you certainly harvested what you could. A blessing for you for the winter which you will put to good use.Great teamwork, you are both willing to learn new skills.A person would be forgiven for assuming you were born and lived all your lives in Alaska.Lovely to have Von as a friend, another great channel to watch.
Amazing gift of meat! Well done on processing. Thank you again for a wonderful, educating video on your Alaska adventures.
that was an amazing experience to watch. such an incredible share! much respect to you guys for the way you honoured the moose. and that was sooo... much hard work! thank you! thank you! continued blessings!🕊
yall are such a great and hard working team and dude, what a girl you have. Shes awesome!
So cool to see Von! Her and Ryan are a little older version of you guys! Thanks for sharing. Team work makes the dream work!
Von says excuse me?!😂
Yes, it's awesome to see that you are friends. I just started watching their channel 😊
I follow Von too, so to see her there really surprised me. I'm glad you are neighbors!!!! Good people in Alaska. Great job salvaging that moose - the meat looks tasty.
Sir, You may want to consider mounting a winch to the front of the trailer deck. Not only would it have made getting the moose on easier. But sure helps with all sorts of equipment loading.
Keep the great stuff coming. Keep Safe and Well.
So thankful you got all that moose meat in the freezer, what a blessing! I was reminded of hog killing time when I was younger. You stayed up and worked till it was all processed. I remember my mama rendering out the fat. Daddy would always bring in the tenderloin first for mama to fry for dinner. We had breakfast, dinner, and supper-so our dinner was was most people’s lunch. She would slice some of the tenderloin and fry it, make gravy, bake biscuits and we always had jams, jellies, and hot applesauce made from the horse apple tree in our yard. Oh my it was so good. Your supper looked so good kids, I hope your parents are so proud of you both. You are so amazing.
It is a blessing you folks and Von & Ryan were able to benefit from this situation. Love both of your channels. ❤
So happy you got the moose!! You guys make a great team!!!
Great to see that nothing goes to waste, even road kill. Excellent system. Well done, that was a massive effort for the two of you.
I love watching y'alls channel. I am in Texas but hail from Roseburg Oregon. I am also am a fan of Ryan and Von's. I try to catch up on videos on Fridays for the week.
Lord bless have a GREAT WEEKEND.
What a blessing nature provided for the winter larder. It is good to see animals harvested with respectful intentions. I sure would love my freezer stocked! Also loved to see the little offerings to Bo , Bandit and the birds. ❤
Very happy for you guys.
So glad you two got the call. Its a daunting task, but the reward is always worth it. The realization of what it takes to quarter, pack out, transport and process an animal that size is always the last thought I get before pulling the trigger during hunting season. Takes myself a day to quarter it and get it out, usually another two to get it processed once I'm home. Hats off to you when the meats in the freezer and the family is fed. ;) Love the vids, keep them coming. You two are living the dream.
As usual, Great team work. It’s my 2nd time seeing you harvesting a Moose.
Good evening from Syracuse NY everyone thank you for sharing your adventures in life
love seeing you guys getting this moose and were able to get the meat from it , you guys did great job in bagging it up . merry Christmas to you all { even the animals } thank you for the take along you guys are the best , love it all . take care and stay safe from Seattle Washington
Awesome job guys and Props to the Troopers that contacted you.Turn something good out of something bad.Cheers!
Hi Guys, I love your no B S attitude to absolutely everything. No matter what you go for you, both throw your hats into the ring. However, the thing that totally jumps out is your " respect " yes respect for every single thing you do. You are both real people in every sense of the word. Reg
Great content! You guys are amazing to watch. Glad Von was able to help with the processing.
Her energy is great! Very helpful to our tired souls 🙂
You are an amaxing hard working couple. I've been watching your videos for a long while, but i think this is the first time I'm making a comment. It's good that you are able to salvage a good amount of meat and share it with your neighbor. Take care, dear hearts, stay safe. Until your next video! 😊
😄 Eric's face when Ariel sneezed. 😄
I’ve witnessed something new to me. From road kill to final product. What a thrill. You guys are amazing.❤
You two are such a great team!!
Woah! That was pretty intense watching you wrangle that moose. It's actually a great program that the Fish and Game offer. Awesome job as usual you two! Thanks for introducing me to a new channel. I went over and subscribed. So happy you have UA-cam pals!
Honest to goodness, I'd rather watch your content than any other on YT or mainstream tv! Always such an adventure. Thank you for all you do to entertain us. Always look forward to your next video and adventures together. Would love to see you do a Q & A sometime. Again, Thanks! You guys are a real treat. And congrats on a full freezer and zero waste.
That was exciting. That was a big moose and I love how you share with other people too, now that is community spirit. I am glad that the moose did not go to waste. Makes me wonder what they do in the UK when we see road kill on the side of the road. We see deer, badges the most. Thank you for sharing, I think Arielle is amazing, can put her mind to anything, skinning, rabbits, moose, etc etc.
Ya'll never fail to impress us. We are happy for you. Best wishes 💐💙🙏🇺🇲
So glad for the good meat haul.
You two need to get help once in a while, you work so hard!
What an amazing thing to get that moose without having to hunt for it. So much very hard work but it'll keep you in enough to meat to last quite awhile... so great for you two to have over the winter.
Straight up Alaska style! Looked like a fun night.
Wow that was a great video. Nice teamwork and excellent dedication to saving all the non contaminated meat. Seeing that you are sharing this moose is an idea I have not heard about. Whatever works and I’m happy for you all. Yummy with biscuits too. 😊❤🇨🇦
That was a lot of work. You guys are an inspiration.
I've made hundreds of pounds of ground and sausage using that grinder, adding some water to your meat when you go to grind through the small dye really helps. Grinding it cold helps so much.
You guys really put in the work on this, I need to get a moose now....
This is certainly the most gripping video you guys have ever put out. Exciting stuff
Omg yes the look on Eric's face when Arielle sneezed was priceless
So I paid careful attention when I got to the 32 minute mark. His look was priceless lol!
This might be our favorite videos from you guys! ☺️
This is a lot of work but I'm glad you guys were able to harvest bunch of meat. So happy for you. Great video, guys!!
Been there, done that, even down to the exploded guts! Haven't been on the salvage list for a long while . I think for a time there was a restriction to low income or non profit group. Surprised you had to drive so far, and there was no one closer to get it! Don't you feel wealthy to have all that lovely meat ? Nice to have an electric grinder. Back in our younger days we did it with a hand grinder! Great video, there are so many people that have never seen such a thing!
What a windfall! I was thrilled for you both through the whole processing. I like to pkg our deer meet with the cling wrap and freezer paper too. Tried a seal a meal but just wasn’t as happy with the expense. 😊❤
This really shows meat processing from start to finish. It makes me appreciate food and all the hard work it takes to get to our plate. Plus, ending with breakfast for dinner is a fitting (and delicious) end for all your hard work.
You two have a bunch of life skills. An eye opener for some!
Your dogs are so precious. So is your life. I hope you can enjoy it for the next 50 years!
It's good to see both of you guys doing work with, interactive with another person in this video coz we have always seen you guys like Lone Wolfs...❤
The last time you 2 broke down a moose it went much easier. This is amazing to watch. If Eric can't get something done I don't know who can, the way he got that moose off the side of the road and onto the truck in no time at all was very impressive. My ex wife is from Finland and I have had reindeer but not moose. I would love to know how it taste. My wife's brother said they used to all go hunting for them when they were young. I have seen a live moose blocking the road in Finland, they're huge animals. Enjoy!!!!
Holy moly she’s HUGE!!! Awesome score guys!
So very glad the lady didn’t go to waste….👍🏼
