Augustiner is the best lager beer to come out of Germany, ever. Hands down the best, go-to brew.
Had this beer at the Augustiner beer garden in Munich and it was absolutely delicious.
Augustiner is the traditionalists brewery at Oktoberfest, their the only one that has their beer in wooden kegs still
which are metal on the inside ;)
I had a glass or two of it straight from a wooden keg while I was in Munich last year. Metal lining or not, it was definitely delicious. A very balanced and tasty lager.
It's impossible to find here in Sweden, but fortunately we can get Hofbräu, which is almost as good.

Augustiner keller Is by far the best beer garden in all of Munich. It is vast and I mean vast. Their beer, out of the wood barrels is like a slice of heaven. And the food is outstanding.
Drink few of these beer to start the evening in my holiday trip in Germany it's a beer you can see all over Munich and other cities people drinking great stuff!
We labelled this beer as "better water," whilst in Augsburg. Drinkable, refreshing and very cheap in Germany. It is superb, one of my top 10 beers.
Augustiner beer gardens are heaven on a hot day. Beautiful 👌

I hate to be that guy but drinking this in Munich it’s simply incredibly more-ish. You have a sip- it’s sweet, grainy, refreshing touch of hops and then that lovely malt finish on the back end which invites you to have another sip. It’s just lovely. The bottled version is nice of course but if you get the chance to try it while in Germany you must!
Couldn't agree more, this is hands-down my favourite light beer for a hot summer day. This is the gold standard for light lagers - none of that skunky industrial piss water for me. Cheers 🍻
Went to a town called faffenhoffen (I thinks that’s the right spelling) with my mate whose father is German and grew up there. That beer is stunning. They have an annual festival called humolous lupolous, deffo get out there if you can! Really nice people

I live just opposite the brewery (btw it looks like Charlie’s Beer Factory) so this has a special place in my heart but as bottled Helles go I prefer Tegernseer (also very hyped) or Hacker Pschorr. That said, Augustiner freshly draught from a wooden cask in a beer garden is heavenly.

I have been to Augustiner Am Platz and I had the pleasure of watching the wood cask of Lager being tapped and then helped to make it disappear.
I rotate between Hofbrau and Paulaner just for ease of access on the east coast of the US, but when I make my way out to much larger alcohol stores, I always buy a case of Augustiner. Such an amazing beer.
The Augustiner you buy in the US is not the same as the beer reviewed in this video. The LagerBier Hell is not exported to the US

Try the Tegernseer Helles and their Spezial. Up there with Augustiner.
My favorite Beer ever. I was introduced to it while living in Germany and it totally changed my view on Beer.
My favourite, you should try Augustiner Edelstoff as well mate. A little stronger but very nice as well.
The best German Helles. Nothing like sitting outside Augustiner Am Dom in Munich sipping one of these or an Edelstoff!! Nice review.
Ever since I lived in Germany in 1999, out of all the beers I've ever had..this is my fav and I had a lot of Helles. They used to sell this out of beer vending machines in Munich for 5 Deutsch Marks, which was about $2.50 lol..I drank that machine dry.
5 DM for a 0.5 liter bottle? That's a lot. There was a beer machine when I was a student in Freiburg back in 1991, and the bottles of Ganter Pilsner cost something like DM 1.30 in those days. The beer was considerably cheaper at the supermarket. I didn't drink much Ganter, but often picked up those 20 bottle crates of Jever Pilsner for well under DM 20.
@@MrSgtau i know gas stations were that price you mentioned, but the College vending machines were trying to make a profit ;) Regardless, a huge craft beer for 75 cents...marvelous days those were.
For all the confused non-Germans who wonder why they call their beer "hell": "Hell" and "Helles" mean something like "bright", "pale" or "fair" in German.
Btw "Lager" is German too, it means "storehouse".
I went to Munich with the Family in 2017 with the family, I’ve been ordering it into Adelaide South Australia through an importer ever since, my favourite all time beer👍

103 degrees here in The Ohio Valley today. Pilsner Urquell here. .Lagers certainly have their place.
I have never had a bad German bier. However my two favorite biers are Wiehenstephaner Hefeweizen and Warstiener Pilsner.

I just got back from munich. This beer on draft was by far my favorite. Very biscuit-y
I really love German Weissbiers. I will defo try this when find it. At the moment i'm really loving liquoricey flavoured stouts. Drinking some from lidl the last few weeks.
It's light and sweet. It goes down your throat like cold water. Perfect on a hot summer day or if you're trying to get drunk fast, that's why young people like it here.
I'm from Germany, but the Augustiner always feels a bit like throwing up, but it tastes really good!
I perver the Spaten from Munich!
The funny thing about is, that this 300 ppl company is so known. They never did any advertising, were made big by female managers at around late 1800,s last female owner Elizabeth Haberland-Wagner conducted the hole brewery to a foundation, so the brewery can never be sold to a big holding like INBEV etc.. There is a saying down at my hometown Munich....have two of it, the 2and one is for social issues!

I really enjoy Pauliner wich is available in Canada, however out of a can it never measured up to the pint I had at the train station. I know it's probably the equivalent of Molson Canadian to a German but it's very enjoyable.
Best Helles Lager by far... no competition for it i think :)

On a hot day, its a tough choice between a Hell Bier and a refreshing shower. I'll generally choose the beer, my wife will tell me to
choose the shower.
I long for the day when this is available in UK supermarkets.
tried this for the first time in my personal paradise mode of watching a Liverpool match in a pub on a huge screen, cozy little bikers type bar in Birkenhead, paid about 5 quid for the bottle, proper quality drink though, there was about 3 inches of beer in the bottle and I went for a piss, got back and the barmaid had collected my bottle from my table , thinking it was discarded, 5 quid a bottle, 3 inches left to savour and she wastes it while I'm in the loo, couldn't believe it, but really lovely drink though, especially while watching the mighty reds on top form, yeah !
Augustiner IS the best I have ever had.
It's almost a photo-finish between this beer and Tegernseer Hell. The Tegernseer just pips it for me though
If it's better than Warsteiner and Weihenstephaner I can't wait to get my hands on it! Hope I can find it.
Classic Munich lager , very acceptable . Looking forward to going to Munich in March and visiting the Augustiner Keller - looking forward to an edelstoff which there serve , also visiting augustiner brausten which serves the lager bier 🍺
Try "Spaten Münchner Hell"! and then tell me what do you think. I am confused. Ajnd to confuse you more there is another good Lager "Augustiner Edelstoff". ! You've got to try them both!
I think which German beer is best is subjective, they're all good. For me Lowenbrau is best, but that's because it was the first German beer I tasted after the stuff UK breweries offer, it was a revelation. Likewise, I didn't really enjoy Warsteiner with its distinctive flavour, and neutral about Krombacher, (but doubtless both very good beers). I've tried all of the cheaper supermarket German beers I've come across, all of which are decent. I like Pauliner. I know about Augustiner's reputation but have never seen it - I'd like to try it, and Spaten.
Bang on 9/10 great summer lager. You put weight on as you get older. We all do. It's natural.

Simon, you reviewed a lot of the Oktoberfest beers in the passed and given them poor ratings. With your new found love of German beers you should go back and try them, in particular Paulaner’s Oktoberfest beer.
Also, in terms of supermarkets over here, Paulaner’s Munchen Helles is the best we can get.

Living in Munich this was my daily brew. Living now in the US I am dissapointed. Augustiner imports some beers but not this helles. So disappointing on top of that a 6 pack of some regular Augustiner is $15+. Wish I could go back and send some cases

Its good but you should try the Augustiner Edelstoff (Gold label).....much better id say....fuller and richer.and stronger..try it!

Totally agree with you Simon.... Love the Warsteiner and 3 x 660 cl bottles for a fiver is a bargain but this Helles lager is a bit better!!

I promise you: Original Hell from Meckatzer Löwenbräu is a bit better than Augustiner. Try it.

Holy crap. You liked Warsteiner? It's toilet water compared to Augustiner (and just about every other German lager, for that matter).
Well in those conditions (relaxing in warm weather..) anything tastes good! ;) But yeah, it's a good lager.

There are many superb beer producers in Munich area. Beer from Tegernsee is very good. I tried it a few years ago. The beer from Aying is for me as good. My favorite beer in Munich is Edelstoff from Augustiner. But it is a matter of taste, no right or wrongs here. I'm not a big fan of the Octoberfest. Too much people, too much noise and too expensive. Too many tourists.
You need to go to the Oide Wies'n. Since you have to pay an entrance fee it's far less touristy.

It is shocking good beer for not some hypster craft brewery with hops that cost as cocain.
sounds good, where did you buy it? its not one i have noticed in the local supermarkets. best German larger, without a doubt the jetstream pilsner from the airbrau brewery at Munich airport worth the flight just to try it

Tried it yesterday and I'm a bit underwhelmed. Very pale, sweet aroma with almost no hops. I understand this is a Helles and not a Pilsner, but to say that it is the best German lager is an extreme statement which cannot possibly carry a lot of meaning. There are *many* Geman lagers. Unfortunately it is very difficult to find good lagers in the UK because most people like to buy the rubbish macro lagers. Specialist shops will have some German ones, but Brits have not yet realised that by far the best lagers are Czech. It's sad that we can only find Budvar and Urquell here. Can't even get other Czech beers online.
Well if you're one of those people with horrible taste who like a lot of hops or IPAs this won't be your favourite
@@lance-biggums I agree, but I'm not one of those people. While I had a period 10-8 years ago when I explored IPAs, I never stopped appreciating cask ale and have now moved away from IPAs. I have always appreciated the subtleties of good British bitters as well as traditional Belgian, German and Czech beers that do not necessarily have much hops.
@@Etalex77 Traditional German and Czech Pilsners have changed dramatically over the course of the last 30 years as back then they used to be way way more hoppy and dry. Warsteiner has still retained certain notes of that flavour but in Veltins or Krombcher it's just not there anymore. They've toned down Jever and now the "extra dry" variance tastes basically like normal Jever in the 90s. I'm not sure what König tastes like nowadays as I haven't had one in ages butI guess it's changed as well.
