I think they REALLY fumbled killing off Lizzie. She would have been a great addition to the squad, she is the Carmine of Kait and JD's generation. I love Clayton to death, but I think it would've been more meaningful if he died saving her, fit's his character too, saving her to honor his brother before joining Anthony and Ben ? Sounds pretty poetic imo. You can still have the death be JD's fault so he still has that guilt and it would be a perfect motivator for Lizzie to join the squad during the open world chapters.
Mate i simp for all the carmines, but the point of the sequals is to focus on the next generation of gears, including a new carmine. She should have had a larger part in the story.@@EggEnjoyer
@@SilverHyozanryu The only screw up was not having Gary carmine have a bigger role before he died. A new trilogy means a new trio of carmines. Gears 6 is when the third carmine should live, as is tradition.
I will say one factoid since you mentioned Gears into space. When Gears of War 3 was in development Cliff and others originally wanted to end the game by blowing up Sera due to the amount of Imlusion being stirred up and the infection spreading, so Marcusa and the gang would leave Sera for the final time and would explore the galaxy for a while until they reached the Sol system and founded planet Earth. This idea was shot down soon after because Cliff and the others saw the movie 2012 who had sorta the same idea which left the Epic Team to rework their ending because quote, "That idea was dumb."
I grew up playing the original gears of war trilogy and I just loved the against all odds military campaign storyline. Seeing Kim get brutally murdered, seeing the riftworm destroy llima, or exploring New Hope, the old trilogy was full of great moments. Also the Gears of War 2 Prescott speech still gets me hyped up. The story just had a great dark atmosphere. The newer games never fulfilled that for me except the final act of Gears 5 which was probably the best part of the campaign in my opinion. The swarm just don't have the same charm as the Locust for some reason. The locust were just great enemies that you hated but also loved at the same time since they were so badass. Also they should have never dropped "of war" in the title. I'm cautiously optimistic for the new emergence day game coming out.
I think the swarm feel less interesting than the locust because their machines of war aren't as cool as the somewhat mechanical slave beasts the locust used to have. Everything about the locust monsters had this horrific overarching design of slavery and torture (The brainwashing goggles on the reavers/brumak, the giant blades stabbing into the gas barges in 3, the large metal hoops on the wretch's that showed that they probably spend a lot of time in chains, the way the bloodmounts rip their mask off and throw their riders off). Their designs were brutal and scary, it was a perfect fit for the genocidal intent of the main locust army, however the swarm all have this really clean look to them that just kind of make them look like aliens. Nothing that especially shows their culture or intent, just alien. However with Hivebusters I really think the coalition was starting to dig into some of the interesting aspects of dealing with the swarm, I really liked the idea of how they destroy the hives by infiltrating through a deceptive kidnapping and gassing them from the core. Hopefully the break from this current plotline will give them better ideas of how to really push the story forward and make the swarm as interesting as the locust.
Gears 5 really tried hard to make you hate the COG/Gears by calling you fascist and murderers, as if we didn't save the whole ass planet in GoW3. It was so cliché and infuriating.
@@UncleBalthasarGeltI mean they were an authoritarian regime even before 4. It’s just that the older games were much better at showing it. The stranded were victims of the COG as well as the locust. The newer games just kinda made it seem lame somehow
@@glarfy8286 yeah that's my point, they made it lame and crude. GoW 1-3 and even Judgement showed this aspect of the COG better, while still making your root for the individuals. @shawnhale2631 yes we, the players, know. The average Stranded doesn't know about what caused E-Day.
They shafted JD in this installment and that's the number one thing that annoyed me about this game. JD was set up to be the next Marcus Fenix and yet he just gets sidelined after the first act? Like wtf? We could've easily explored Kait's story while still playing as JD. Hell, there were cues in the previous game about them being the next Marcus and Dom pairing, even in a romantic sense? Why did they go and retcon that shit?
I still think Kait should be the leading protagonist, but I agree about the romance part. They hinted at it last game and it seems like it was just dropped and forgotten about in this game somehow
cause ESG/DEI can't have the girl play second fiddle, can't have a strong male lead or story on brotherhood, now its about maternal, girl power, terrible wheedon humor (MCU) and bright and vibrant out of shame of older series remember no the same workers as before
@@EggEnjoyer In a scene in Gears Of War 4, they use a watermill to go up and while JD and Marcus sort of hesitate at first, Kait takes the initiative to which Marcus says to his son “interesting girlfriend you’ve got there” which went nowhere in the following game lol.
My opinion on Gears 5 fault is that the cast doesn’t mesh well at all. Compared to the first game where some characters didn’t mesh well, take marcus and baird but they were so well written that its makes sense why. To Kait and Del where they’re essentially echo chambers of each other. That hates JD because he made a bad call once. Literally everyone makes mistakes and if Del wasn’t such an echo chamber he’d point out the hypocrisy of Kait making a bad call with linking to the Matriarch, and also keeping the secret of her nightmares away from the others.
Precisely. Del shouldve said something about Kait doing the same thing JD did, wouldve made their dynamic more interesting and give him more of a backbone, instead he was just another follower with little to his character. Disappointing.
I may be wrong but i believe cole was supposed to be another rookie similar to anthony but was changed when the voice actor Lester Speight auditioned they made a character all around him, his personality and energy.
It felt like the whole thing with J.D. and the deal with Settlement 2 just seemed to be there to create drama. It felt like the entire thing was brought to the forefront for that brief bit of the game was to give a little conflict for the characters and went far too hard into forcing Kait as a sort of moral center for the group there. Which just seemed like a different writing team handled it totally disconnected from the rest of the narrative. The writing really let the characters down in a lot of places, especially Kait and JD here. Kait didn't need to try so hard with the whole "screw your order" thing, it just felt like a moment made for a trailer or some shit. But yeah, this game really cooled me off on the Gears franchise, but you've made some really great videos on the series that have been fun as hell to watch so most appreciated!
yup its terrible cause modern gears hates its core audience the push of Kait is evident why, the brother hood themes are lost to the new ones, so sanitized and coddled in comparison, also male bad messaging so of course they have to devalue JD and have Marcus praise her more than his own son
@@willmelvin2351 It could be a great example of how to finish off writing a narrative when you're long past giving a shit but still need to hit the right marks in terms of messaging. Because you might get shit otherwise and who wants to deal with that? Then, IF time permits AND you care to do so, try to make it all compelling for the gamer. Which usually there is no more of either left because the industry at various studios has just sucked the creative drive from your very soul but hey, job's a job!
Ever since the Escape Mode reveal trailer, I fell in love with Scorpio Squad. I’m a sucker for suicide squads, especially for a group that intentionally gets snatched, plants a bomb in the heart of their hive, escapes and does it again?? I really enjoyed playing escape during the launch period, getting the low times for those exclusive skins. Besides that, the launch was pretty bad. Was surprised we got a dlc and it ended up being pretty great. Much love to Scorpio. I did enjoy the new redesigns for the swarm. Yeah they were basically just born again in gears 4 but their designs were pretty forgettable. The designs in 5 really makes them pop out more, my favorite being the grenadier. I really disliked TC removing ranks in ranked and removing KOTH from the pool :( lot of blunders from TC and the radio silence really put salt on the wound. Prescott of all people would’ve handled Gears of War 5 better than TC. I really hope they don’t drop the hammer on E Day but idk man.
I don't have anything factoid related but to talk about the Locust Origins since we finally came here: there was a fan theory long ago who basically explained why there's suddenly a Locust home after only 100 years which is I think the canon answer as to how long the Locust have been around, which fans have theorize that the locust have almost always been around by explaining regular humans went underground in let's say the Sera idea of the Bronze Age and years and generations after became the Kantus and form the Trinity of Worms and how they got their weird revival powers and why they have a special connection to the Hallows which come YEARS after the Locust Queen happened at New Hope and came to Mount Kadar. Gears 5 doesn't do this and just goes: "Nah, they've only been a recent event." which really muddies up the timeline because I highly doubt the Locust build all that in only 100 years, even Marcus in Gears 2 saids, "We still don't know how long they've been down here."
@@UncleBalthasarGelt I mean what happen at New Hope isn't the problem. This is a series where the major theme is: you can't trust the government even those like Marcus don't like the COG. Hoffman HATES Prescott, the at the time last human leader of the COG. Even the point of Marcus figuring out what happened to Adam is to state: even in death the COG can't be trusted. It's just they make it feel like ONLY New Hope happened. They don't bother to explain why the Locust have a strong connection to The Hollow.
Yeah was really hoping we’d have some explanation for Kantus and their powers and connections. Tactics takes it even further in just ignoring the time inconsistencies
These videos have been getting me through the sleepness nights with a newborn, this video came at the perfect time. Excellent content you deserve far more views!
Marcus Fenix : Disobey orders to save his dad “fails” to do so and goes to jail. Kate: Does random stuff idk I have not played gears 5 that much and does not have any punishment.
@@funkyreapercat5280but in the context of him searching for Maria, him and Marcus still got the mission done… their mission was to find Nexus and plant a beacon so humanity could invade if they died then yes him searching for his wife was stupid but the ultimate mission was completed. Meanwhile Kait’s journey really didn’t amount to anything other than making the situation worse… giving the Swarm Leadership thus making them that much more dangerous, but I’m glad her headaches and nightmares are gone.
The new Locust origin also doesn't make a lot of sense (its a retcon).... I mean, the Locust were a full fledged society, with fully developed institutions, religions, architecture, language, morals, complex hierarchy, they built all of that, in just 30 to 50 years??? When the Locust where always there in the hollow, it made way more sense... Like Myrrah says in her quotes, that Sera is rightfully theirs, since they are pretty much born from the planet itself.
Yeah Its always been confusing and even more so with 4 and 5 because gears 2 seemed to hint at it being the chance of the locust always being there, almost sharing the planet with them but with that Niles chapter and now in 4, 5 and Tactics seem to say that the locust have only been alive for roughly 50-100ish years. And they do move very quickly but with how much we see in gears 2, it doesn’t connect very well
Bro, I discovered this channel last year and probably every other night since, the critique vids have been on while I fall asleep, they’ve gotten me through tough nights and mornings and I can honestly say I’ve been waiting for this, myself and the woman are about to put it on, both fans of gears and fans of yours, thank you bro, happy Christmas from Waterford, Ireland 🤌🏻❤️
2:00:35 its exactly the problem though, its why they wrote her that way, in their minds it made her "Strong female character" cause she isn't just a character that's a girl, hence the random flip to her as the lead, coddled by Marcus and JD now so sidelined they're fine killing him off, something obvious changed in the studio since 4 and 5 lets not shield with typical "misogynist hate women" lines
I hate that the Kait critiques are covered with people who consider Gears 5 woke because women and/or blatant misogyny when alot of people think otherwise and just want to not have a spoiled brat with the depth of a kiddy pool as a character. They had a chance to make a good character with Kait, but didnt know what else to do with her besides her connection to Myrrah to make her interesting. And I understand the backlash because imagine if Lara Croft was replaced by a man everyone would be on that topic thinking it was bull. Or even bayonetta being replaced by a girl introduced in one game when she's the titular character (oh wait that happened)
Loved the video, I agree with pretty nearly all your points. I had a great time with this one personally and have had some good rounds playing the campaign with my roommate. I'm pretty durprised at how many bugs you experienced, I didn't know there were so many issues, I feel like my playthroughs have been pretty near bug free so it's a shame that your experience was affected so much.
Ah thanks for all your hard work, I love your analysis and critique and will definitely enjoy this. I'll save it for work tomorrow so i can kill half my shift.
I hate how fast Lizzie got killed off in this game as well and the way she died, I know it’s a theme for Carmines to die but damn I feel like she would’ve been a good character to keep around especially with Clayton still being alive
I hate it how they killed off Gary and Lizzy as well they didn't even give us much time to get to know them unlike Anthony and Benjamin. I would have assumed they would have did something different with the Carmine's like use two games to build up both of their characters and kill one of them off in Gears 5 thus upping the stakes a bit.
Have no idea how a gears review popped up in my recommended videos but here I am and now I just noticed you’ve made one for each game so I’ll be back when I finish those
1:49:00 while id agree, the comics and novels changed alot of it for me. I know it's not fair to compare 3-4 games to comics and novels that get to focus more on story and characters, but it's still canon material and explains alot of why the characters are who they are and the amount of shit they've been in. Even more world building as well. It's a shame they don't get more recognition because it made me really grow more attached to them especially Anya Cole and Dizzy. And the novel shows how deep Marcus and Doms brotherhood went especially with Carlos (Doms brother and Marcus friend) and the santiago family. They grew close in school and basically became Marcus family while Adam was away and Marcus mother was dead. Though I do think that characters with minor changes like Cole and Baird in the games still work as they're charming characters and there's been alot of video games where the characters don't go through a big change and still leave an impact.
Gears E day may be a return to roots but, i do hope gears 6 follows a strong tone akin to the act 1 and act 4 of gears 5. Even the hive busters dlc was better than 4. Gears 6 doesnt need to hit the same peaks as gears 2 or 3, but it better be a worth while war.
My guy you have done it, you have finally done a Gears 5 video that is an actual critique and not regurgitating what everyone thinks will get em views, I’m so happy to see someone finally give real context behind the, It’s about me, scene that eveyone plays for a joke you also deconstructed the characters In a far smarter and intriguing way than what every other video on UA-cam has, and also those last 5 mins of the video, perfectly said wish other people would think that way, u absolutely earned a sub here, this and the gears 4 video got me through my 9 hour work shift so once again thank you and very eager to see what you do next
44:55 admires Niel druckmann, yeah this series is dead if that's the thought they have subversion sums up the entire story, you can tell how the idea of new games changed from 4 to 5 the terrible Wheedonism humor, girl power focus, softer characters, bro hood gone for maternal focus Gears another series dead honestly especially with that last choice
The worst thing that can happen to any franchise : no definitive end. At that point, maybe just blow up the planet for real. I was excited for Gears OF WAR 6 (not skipping) but after 5 got me bored as hell, horde mode (my favorite mode) got me mad as hell and everything surrounding actual Microsoft and the dev team, I'm not even trying looking at the next game. Not E-day, not 6 nothing. I almost prefer that no game get out. And for the love of god, don't make that military shooter a god damn RPG in the campain !
Wont lie, this games multiplayer has some dope skins and characters. Ketor Vrol, Rager, Hunter, Warden, Crimson Skorge, Ravager Grenadier, Lambent, COG Commandos, Hollow Storm Clayton & Sam and several more. And Karn. We were robbed of not being able to play him in judgement.
Now thinking about it they could have done a romance between Kait and jd. Just like how they teased with Marcus and Anya they could have shown this relationship and how it bloomed. Kait could have been more than just royalty she could have been caring for those around her by showing that towards jd,del, people outside of the walls, etc. she could of been the opposite of her grandma instead of being evil she was good and could of possibly be the key for peace between the locust and humans. In the end they are the same.
Exactly! Even just that there, having Kait be a caring person (cause they show she cares somewhat for those outsiders in 4 before they all ☠️ lol) but then in 5 she kinda does act like she’s just on a mission. Sad how they just missed such an easy opportunity here
First and foremost thank you for all the videos regarding this series. I watched all of them and they were very entertaining. I had no idea rod ferguson looked up to Neil druckmann as inspiration when it came to the development of gears 5. That really explains a lot regarding the direction gears 5 went. At the end of the day I really enjoyed playing through gears 5 and there were some emotional tearjerker moments. Lizzie dying still gives me chills when I watch it and the choice to save del or JD made my son cry. I actually left that choice up to him because I wanted to see who he would choose. I’m proud to say he choose JD and I asked him why and he simply said because that Marcus’s son. Proud father moment to say the least. However we both agreed we didn’t dislike del in any way but, it just didn’t feel right choosing him over JD. The overall story though didn’t feel right and it was weird to me how they wanted so badly to make JD out to be loose cannon who couldn’t lead the squad. It was strange how they made Marcus always seem to care more about kait and pretty much agreed with whatever she said. She was definitely the most unlikable character throughout the game and they purposely made her cold for no apparent reason because I don’t remember her being like that in gears of war 4. Fahz reminds me so much of many of the same people I served in the military with. He was very unlikable but, it was nice to see he cared at least a little bit there in the end. I look forward to watching future content and will be there for gears of war E-day.
its terrible and evident why, the care of the series is so dead and him praising Neil says everything about where the series is going, Gears is dead and pushing Kait is one of the worse decisions they could of made
Random note from a long-time gears fan, as someone who played 1-4 with my whole family and who only recently played 5 for the first time with my girlfriend (due to my nervousness the series would pull a halo 5 on me and be an absolute dumpster fire) I can say firmly that this game while not my favorite, not my by a long shot, does give me hope for the Coalition in the future. Another note, being a couch coop enthusiast, Act 2 in particular is an amazing experience playing split screen. The Kait vision sequences played out through the eyes of Del gave me serious Dead Space 3 vibes where one player is having a completely different experience from the other and even brought back a short-lived pseudo Beast mode at the end of the mission where one player (Del) is having to fight the Swarm controlled by Player 1 (Kait)
opposite for me, it shows how dead the series is if it even considers the choice to kill the last leads son its so spiteful to its history effectively replacing the son with "daughter" cause modern media and its agenda on male bad messaging,
Also, I'm not a person of color, but I want to mention Jace Stratton because Del is pretty much the Jace problem. Jace in the books and comics has alot of character to him even compared to Del but somebody on the Epic Team didn't exactly give him alot of screen time in Gears 3, since Cliff has said they wanted Jace to be someone who was okay being a side character like Dom is because both characters are suppose to be people who don't care for glory or exposure, but the problem is they didn't do anything with him in Gears 3 since they shove in alot of women on the forefront of the third game, which I love to see more of, but this left Jace with nothing to do besides being the character the second player uses after, spoiler alert, Dom dies and that's about it, so I'm certain they wanted another Jace who wasn't another bombastic personality like Cole usually is in the games nor another tasked determined Marcus or another emotional, soft man like Dom. The problem though is Del is not Dom. Lol. The issue is Del has nothing connecting him to anyone in the cast. He doesn't have a family we know of besides him and JD knowing each other since Boarding School but they never gave him a family or someone close to him to keep him anchored to this setting unlike Dom who had a wife to give him stakes to the story from a personal angle and JD is connected to Marcus, Baird, and Cole, so he has a story relevance unlike Del who tags along with Kait the whole story. They try to give him personality but at the same time do so in the same game where he can die, which really weakens his stance in the story, because at least with Dom he's more than the best friend/side kick and considered by many fans as one of their favorite characters on both sides when it comes to Gears 5. This all falls back not just on people of color characters within Gears but that Gears of war characters are very shallow when you begin to pick them apart the more you learn about them. Halo at least finally came around to giving the Master Chief personality by Halo 4 and basically copied alot of his traits from his book counterpart which is a good thing but shows what Gears of War lacks when compared because even when you do read the books and comics the characters really don't have anything to them for reasons we probably won't be told about.
I’m not 100% sure about this. but I’m pretty sure it’s myrrahs consciousness in Reyna’s body. I remember seeing something saying that in a lore video, someone will probably fact check me just thought it would be cool if it was true! Edit: also really good video!
Gears 5 could've been split onto two games the first part leading up to the disconnection of Kait from the hive and battle with the matriarch, and the next starting in the desert working on the possibility of getting the hammer back up leading up to the battle we got. 5 felt like chunks of two stories mashed together that loses all of its cohesion. Gears, less than Halo, with their 4th installments started to lose identity leading up to open world in games that have no business being open world. Admittedly Gears does it better, but it's completely unnecessary in these worlds.
As the head of a small studio, I can say that you give some of the best game critique I’ve seen on UA-cam. I’d love for you to one day talk about a game that my company made. I think you’d give it a really fair shake.
Will you do a gears tactics critique next? Also JD could have had so much character development after Lizzy’s death and I wish we got to play as him during that development also I just couldn’t kill jd with all Marcus has lost taking his only son is just to much but honestly 4 and 5 can be fixed with better writing that’s it hiveBuster also proves this
As someone who has never really had interest in these games, your videos convinced me to buy the first three and judgement. I want to really give them another try.
One of my favorite small details is the ability to use Marcus's custom Lancer or the OG one. Idk I just think its really cool you could do that even if it doesnt mean anything gameplay wise. Story gripe I had was them really trying to make JD look bad
I mean, that hammer of dawn failure scene doesn't make any sense, you could say that the targetting could be off, but... Whats does that have to do the "trigger"? Shit went bad with the hammer only for narrative reasons, a huge convenience.
I think this game as a game is overall solid, 8/10 (especially after updates). But as a Gears game it lacks alot of what makes Gears great regarding style & personality (defining things for a franchise)
its a 4/10 using 'memberberries nostalgia bait to make people ignore its flaws the style of Gears is so watered down even gameplay is made easier even on hardest modes in comparison to old Gears the focus on Kait, lost of the brotherhood themes and softness on of the new
Something that has always bugged me to no end is saying that using the hammer in settlement 2 was a bad idea. Yes it was very risky but what was the alternative, just die? Can someone explain, i genuinely cant think of any other option.
You should do the halo series, similar to gears the first couple are amazing then there's been a real drop-off since bungie stopped making them. Keep up the good work!
I've been reading the books, they are phenomenal! I'm on Ephyra Rising and while I think the change of pace will put some people off, it's a nice payoff. I'm already noticing some changes and or tone shifts that feel odd though and most people say the last three books are worst then the first 5 and I think I have to agree but still good. At first, I didn't give the choice much thought but now everytime I think of it, it makes me laugh so hard. I don't know how Xbox has managed to ruin it's 2 main franchises but it's pretty funny! Here's hoping E-day is good and encourages a few more prequel games, I think some of the books lend themselves to a game or dlc at least. I also hope they'll make a horror/survival horror game where you play as stranded.
People are always so angry because Kait was eventually the lead and I don’t get why. Leaving gears 3 there was still a mystery behind the locust and how they got their queen Baird even has a line in the elevator shaft something like “she doesn’t look human, did she join the locust for shits and giggles or something.” And to get that explanation gears 5 really did it well so I don’t think the characters are the problem. The problem is the vibe of the game and the horror aspects being gone. We used to roam the empty creepy city’s years after and during emergence day but in gears 5 we roam barren wastelands and it ruins the feel of gears.
They didn't innovate in the right ways, too fast of movement, too broken at launch for multiplayer and the store was a slap in the face. The story wasn't good and was lackluster with character development. I just hope Gears of War E-Day is a masterpiece
Gears 4 after playing gears 5 multiplayer was just more faster pace than gear 5 in my opinion active reloading did something and the Lancer wasn’t pointless in gears 4.
Yeah! Before starting up campaign you can go to the settings and toggle on using multiplayer skins. Those were skins I got from mp. I was replaying some parts for Del's ending and wanted to use different skins to see them in cutscenes
aside from Kait being a girlboss through out this game, I liked it. The one main thing I hated was the killing of Lizzie Carmine. I think removing Fahz from the roster of the campaign, and putting Lizzie there would have been better in my opinion.
Honestly, even if cait was written right it still wouldn’t be good as the first 3. They could have had cait be someone they needed to save but that would be a trope. During 4, felt like after her mother being killed some new threat should have taken cait away because they know already she is of Queen blood but anyways…… The swarm under her transforms the swarm back into the locust with new threats. The new threat could have been a raam or scourge like being a boss that kills Del. Ends up being Star Wars 6-9. Just bringing back the locust with them transformed into the swarm just feels like you are trying to squeeze a finished idea for gain, just like halo. 4 and 5 should just be eday not some bad continuation. I just wanted it to be better but man 4-5 just kills it.
I was grinding this game online until they got rid of the ranked system i was so close to being onyx ranked and was having fun tbh then i log on one day and it’s all gone all my effort turned into a “free skin” for playing ranked that i was never able to use. Never played again
Halo 4 was decent as far as I remember it but I don’t remember too much. Halo 5 bored me quickly and Infinite’s MP was fun for a time. Feel like I’ve seen more negativity for each halo 343 has done but halo 5 seems to have been the worst of the bunch
This game really wanted you hate JD and love Kait. They even had to puppet Marcus into saying he prefers Cait over JD. To be bad, they failed at both. OT Marcus would've shut Cait down.
It’s INSANE that the best character in this game is freaking JD, who for half the game we’re told over and over again we should hate. Like my god JD and Fahz would have the best character development if we got to play as them for like, an “intermission” act or something. JD would have such an interesting perspective, way more than whatever we got with kait, where he comes to terms with his mistakes, especially with settlement 2 and with Lizzie, and comes to terms with being his own person, apart from being just “the son of Fenix” But noooooooo we have to stick with kait🙄🙄🙄
Very wierd. I played gears 5 day one and did not experience any bugs or glitches. But I feel like I have very good luck with buggy games at luanch. Example cyberpunk the only glitch I had was the constant crashing. Which was way less frustrating cuase I played it on ps5. Ac unity, never seen one bug even though it was all over the internet being a buggy mess
2:02:47 cause "strong women" trope, she must be indifferent to anything authority/men say and abrasive to show how strong she is, media in the last decade sadly ironic how they made the soft baby face black guy the "ally" character to be strung around by her
I'm in the minority in being disappointed that E Day is the next Gears. We already know what happened on E Day mostly. I want to know what happens next after 5. Plus, I want more Hivebusters.
I think youre in the minority only because a lot of were real disappointed in 4 and 5. While I was also disappointed, I still agree with you I'd almost rather see whats next rather than another prequel. But theyve gotta get the trust back of the fanbase I imagine. Still excited nonetheless
I wanted a prequel but I didn't want more locust. I wanted a pendulum wars game, after reading one of the gears books I found the whole conflict so interesting and I want to see more of it
Overall I think I did enjoy the campaign. I enjoyed playing it and I found the gameplay to be really fun, but the story did disappoint in a lot of ways. The links back to old games like the easter eggs and going back to things like new hope are great, but I think that says a lot about the game itself. The characters are not well written, the only point where I felt any kind of emotion is to do with Marcus, and the story does not feel like Gears. I don't know, I enjoy the campaign but the story just lets it down.
I heard alot about 4&5 being "woke" before I played and Im not sure where it came from. From the problems I had with 5 and especilly 4 "woke" wasnt there. Mostly It was the boring charactors in 4 and the ending of 5. Aside from that they are objectevly good games. Also I play the games only less then year ago so any problems that were at the start I didnt see.
Yeah still dont get the "woke" allegations. Glad you didnt have any problems playing the game, Im sure me playing on Xbox one on release contributed to most of the issues lol
The only Gears game I refuse to play. But hey, without it, we wouldn't have The Coalition doing some soul searching and beginning work on my other* most hyped Series X game, Gears of War: E-Day, so... *My first is Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, ICYW. Yes, it's timed, no, I don't care. Can't wait to buy that.
Indiana Jones does look pretty interesting. Was thrown off a bit with it being in first person but it looks good from what ive seen so far. Not sure when ill get around to playing it however. Hope you like it when you get your hands on it!
Honestly the biggest conflict in the squad with settlement 2 could have been easily prevented if the DeeBees and soldiers had non lethal rounds or stun guns when dealing with protestors? Like that shit genuinely confused me. You guys have all this technology and weaponry that you couldn't afford anything to prevent a riot? You'd think Anya would have established something like that given the fact that she's definitely not the kind of character to allow lethal weapons in settlements where civilians are around. Really makes the new COG look worse and more incompetent compared to the old.
Exactly! In 4 they mention that Jinn has “started” using lethal force with Deebees, but in the settlement 2 situation, they already had lethal weapons? It doesn’t add up
2:00:06 I honestly can't sympathize for the protesters considering what has happened the past four to five games. Yeah the cog government was corrupt but at this point in the timeline I'd rather trust the government that saved Humanity and has the means to do it again then whatever the hell the people want to do living outside of the cities 🤷🏾♂️
Initially in Gears 4’s multiplayer the gnasher infamously would consistently do 83% damage when it certainly seemed like it should’ve been a one shot kill. It happened so frequently to people that it became a meme in the community pretty much
“To show its more than just a dude bro shooter” that’s the problem though, buddy. Gears of war trilogy is as incredible as it is because it’s a dude bro shooter. Those are its roots. Nerfing it into a story about women and motherhood does not fit. Gears is at its best when it has the testosterone that the original trilogy has.
My point was that it could be a dude bro shooter AND tell a matriarchal story at the same time. My problem with the game is somehow failing to do either. Trust me, I love the bravado the older games have and do feel like it’s not there as much anymore in 4 and 5. But that doesn’t mean it can’t exist alongside a good story about Kait and her lineage. TC couldn’t manage to do either one, that’s my problem.
"Its about me!"
Yes Kait, that's the problem.
Damn, I would've loved that. We dont need the Carmines to keep dying man
First female carmine and yall immediately simp.
She a carmine bro, she had to die smh
Mate i simp for all the carmines, but the point of the sequals is to focus on the next generation of gears, including a new carmine. She should have had a larger part in the story.@@EggEnjoyer
I don’t think carmines should die anymore that curse ended with clay
Lol. Delta squad Guardians of the Galaxy
Gears 5 is the second time that a Microsoft exclusive with 5 in the title had a multiplayer I absolutely loved and a campaign I never touched.
Gears without the war...or the testosterone...or the soul.
The no “of war” is so painful.
@@UncleBalthasarGelt I mean they also caused the issues, so saving it post global die-off is a little moot. Do you know the lore?
@@glarfy8286 yeah that's my point, they made it lame and crude. GoW 1-3 and even Judgement showed this aspect of the COG better, while still making your root for the individuals.
@shawnhale2631 yes we, the players, know. The average Stranded doesn't know about what caused E-Day.
Gears 5: Kait has a headache
I wish the entire game was like Act 1 and with Jd, it had such a good direction/tone and interesting, way more than 4 and the next acts of 5
They shafted JD in this installment and that's the number one thing that annoyed me about this game.
Romantic sense 🤨?
I still think Kait should be the leading protagonist, but I agree about the romance part. They hinted at it last game and it seems like it was just dropped and forgotten about in this game somehow
cause ESG/DEI
can't have the girl play second fiddle, can't have a strong male lead or story on brotherhood, now its about maternal, girl power, terrible wheedon humor (MCU) and bright and vibrant out of shame of older series
remember no the same workers as before
@@EggEnjoyer
In a scene in Gears Of War 4, they use a watermill to go up and while JD and Marcus sort of hesitate at first, Kait takes the initiative to which Marcus says to his son “interesting girlfriend you’ve got there” which went nowhere in the following game lol.
@@marcusclark1339 I realize that's the case. I just wish it wasn't.
No way you uploaded the day after I binge your videos on an overnight shift
Watching this on an overnight shift rn
@ best of luck on your shift brother 🫡 just finished my week long shift and it was god awful
@@ImSoConfucius You got holiday overtime too 😂😭?
Yeah I remember reading that sonewhere! Glad they found him, cant imagine the series without him honestly
But yeah, this game really cooled me off on the Gears franchise, but you've made some really great videos on the series that have been fun as hell to watch so most appreciated!
yup its terrible cause modern gears hates its core audience
the push of Kait is evident why, the brother hood themes are lost to the new ones, so sanitized and coddled in comparison, also male bad messaging so of course they have to devalue JD and have Marcus praise her more than his own son
I agree. The writing felt very disjointed throughout the game or just nonexistent towards the end
Yeah Gears 5 ruined the lore just to take a jab at the COG. Such a waste.
Glad to be of help! Appreciate the support
Marcus Fenix :
Disobey orders to save his dad “fails” to do so and goes to jail.
Kate:
Does random stuff idk I have not played gears 5 that much and does not have any punishment.
She actually ends up LEADING everyone, in the end.
Dom also disobey orders in Gears 2 when he goes search Maria and he doesn't have consequences for that. Double standards, i see.
@@funkyreapercat5280 your right I forgot about that.
@@Thomas20Smith He still disobeyed orders.
Ah man the love from Ireland! Appreciate you all, Merry Christmas to you too!
God i fucking love an hour+ long video analysis/critique that actually analyzes the game instead of just recapping everything like a game manual
Im upset this is 10hrs old with under 1,000 views.
It deserves at least 3 more decimal places
Yeah somehow I always seem to catch bugs and glitches, my luck isnt the greatest lmao
Ah thanks for all your hard work, I love your analysis and critique and will definitely enjoy this. I'll save it for work tomorrow so i can kill half my shift.
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!
I hate how fast Lizzie got killed off in this game as well and the way she died, I know it’s a theme for Carmines to die but damn I feel like she would’ve been a good character to keep around especially with Clayton still being alive
Yea I really wish she had stayed around a bit longer
Played the matriarch boss fight with a friend and I can confirm the del isn’t effected by the visions
Glad you enjoyed it! Definitely more coming
Just rewatched the past reviews a couple days ago, perfect timing lol
44:55 admires Niel druckmann, yeah this series is dead if that's the thought they have
subversion sums up the entire story, you can tell how the idea of new games changed from 4 to 5
the terrible Wheedonism humor, girl power focus, softer characters, bro hood gone for maternal focus
Gears another series dead honestly especially with that last choice
Rod Ferguson is gone from the gears franchise
The worst thing that can happen to any franchise : no definitive end. At that point, maybe just blow up the planet for real.
I was excited for Gears OF WAR 6 (not skipping) but after 5 got me bored as hell, horde mode (my favorite mode) got me mad as hell and everything surrounding actual Microsoft and the dev team, I'm not even trying looking at the next game. Not E-day, not 6 nothing. I almost prefer that no game get out.
And for the love of god, don't make that military shooter a god damn RPG in the campain !
Gears4 1000% got multiplayer right. Them esports games were so fuckin fire to watch
Gears Tactics critique next?
Most likely
Sad how they just missed such an easy opportunity here
Oh wow i totally forgot about wingman. That was really fun if love to play an updated version one day
I liked Gears 5 a lot more than 4 but neither come anywhere close to the OG trilogy for me. Very excited for E-Day tho
The memorial at act 4 if you get all the collectables of the old character like Ben helmet and Minh cog tags you can interact with a Easter egg there
Ah really? Im gonna have to check that out
I appreciate the time and effort you put into this keep it up
I appreciate it!
I look forward to watching future content and will be there for gears of war E-day.
its terrible and evident why, the care of the series is so dead and him praising Neil says everything about where the series is going, Gears is dead and pushing Kait is one of the worse decisions they could of made
Grinding helldivers looking for a vid and this pops up lol perfect
This is your best vid yet. The pacing, the analysis, the commentary is all top notch. The character analysis was brilliant. Much love 💚
Thanks so much!
When the world needed him the most he came back
Random note from a long-time gears fan, as someone who played 1-4 with my whole family and who only recently played 5 for the first time with my girlfriend (due to my nervousness the series would pull a halo 5 on me and be an absolute dumpster fire) I can say firmly that this game while not my favorite, not my by a long shot, does give me hope for the Coalition in the future.
Ah i forgot about the Act 2 portion! I bet that was cool playing split screen for it
opposite for me, it shows how dead the series is if it even considers the choice to kill the last leads son
its so spiteful to its history effectively replacing the son with "daughter" cause modern media and its agenda on male bad messaging,
Also, I'm not a person of color, but I want to mention Jace Stratton because Del is pretty much the Jace problem.
I was waiting for you to make this keep up the great work!
As the head of a small studio, I can say that you give some of the best game critique I’ve seen on UA-cam. I’d love for you to one day talk about a game that my company made. I think you’d give it a really fair shake.
I’m glad you think that, I’d love to check out the games your company’s made!
@ Great. I can email you some information if you want. Do you have an email attached to your UA-cam account?
Happy you’re back gonna watch the hell out of this
What a great way to end the year with a great video
Will you do a gears tactics critique next? Also JD could have had so much character development after Lizzy’s death and I wish we got to play as him during that development also I just couldn’t kill jd with all Marcus has lost taking his only son is just to much but honestly 4 and 5 can be fixed with better writing that’s it hiveBuster also proves this
Tactics will be next.
And yeah JD had so much going for him. Hivebusters had different writers and directors for its story and it shows.
@ I actually did not know hivebusters had different writers and directors that explains so much now
Will you do a video about the gears Books and Comics??
BABE WAKE UP WILL MELVIN GEARS VIDEO JUST DROPPED
As someone who has never really had interest in these games, your videos convinced me to buy the first three and judgement. I want to really give them another try.
They’re amazing games so you definitely should!
One of my favorite small details is the ability to use Marcus's custom Lancer or the OG one. Idk I just think its really cool you could do that even if it doesnt mean anything gameplay wise. Story gripe I had was them really trying to make JD look bad
1:22:28 funny about this, if JD gets kick when an enemy vaults he can drop It like a heavy weapon, you can even carry It and run with it
The king is back!!
1:26:18 Best part of the entire game. 10 out of 10.
But as a Gears game it lacks alot of what makes Gears great regarding style & personality (defining things for a franchise)
its a 4/10 using 'memberberries nostalgia bait to make people ignore its flaws
the style of Gears is so watered down even gameplay is made easier even on hardest modes in comparison to old Gears
the focus on Kait, lost of the brotherhood themes and softness on of the new
He uploaded it
Yay !
Something that has always bugged me to no end is saying that using the hammer in settlement 2 was a bad idea. Yes it was very risky but what was the alternative, just die? Can someone explain, i genuinely cant think of any other option.
Beats me man
bro you did a fantastic job!
Playing as stranded would be really interesting.
Which might I add makes the last chapter the best because we face the locust/swarm head on trying to save people
They didn't innovate in the right ways, too fast of movement, too broken at launch for multiplayer and the store was a slap in the face. The story wasn't good and was lackluster with character development. I just hope Gears of War E-Day is a masterpiece
Another good video....say you again in 6 months 👋🏾
Gears 4 after playing gears 5 multiplayer was just more faster pace than gear 5 in my opinion active reloading did something and the Lancer wasn’t pointless in gears 4.
Marcus was more skeptical because he’s sees Anya death as a way for Jin to be first minister or whatever the title
Interesting, hadn’t considered that
@ It was something I heard in a book I haven’t read them just listened to them on audible
Oh yea I been waitin on this😭🙏
Damn honestly you make this game look fun as fuck lol. Like..... Do you see the state of all these classic series? This honestly seems dope.
Don’t let all my criticism over shadow what’s great about this game. It can still be fun, probably better with people to play with
Whoa, can you customize the characters gears 5 in campaign mission. What was that cutscene with del wearing a hat and kait with blue hair?
Yeah! Before starting up campaign you can go to the settings and toggle on using multiplayer skins. Those were skins I got from mp. I was replaying some parts for Del's ending and wanted to use different skins to see them in cutscenes
I actually really loved gears 5
It was still good, just for me it really undersold and disappointed me heavily for what I was wanting out of it.
Love these vids
Glad you like em!
aside from Kait being a girlboss through out this game, I liked it.
NEW WILL MELVIN VID
I was grinding this game online until they got rid of the ranked system i was so close to being onyx ranked and was having fun tbh then i log on one day and it’s all gone all my effort turned into a “free skin” for playing ranked that i was never able to use. Never played again
Wow, can’t blame you there
That kait skin is awful bro omg
Lmao it was the only one I had and wanted to see something different in the cutscenes
1:32 but halo 4 is an actually great game.
The real problem is halo 5 and infinite
JD would have such an interesting perspective, way more than whatever we got with kait, where he comes to terms with his mistakes, especially with settlement 2 and with Lizzie, and comes to terms with being his own person, apart from being just “the son of Fenix”
But noooooooo we have to stick with kait🙄🙄🙄
Yeah, I hate that we missed out on JD and Fahz and while also having an uninteresting Kait 😒
I think I just have some bad luck lol. I also played this initially on Xbox one so there’s that
2:02:47 cause "strong women" trope, she must be indifferent to anything authority/men say and abrasive to show how strong she is, media in the last decade sadly
ironic how they made the soft baby face black guy the "ally" character to be strung around by her
I'm in the minority in being disappointed that E Day is the next Gears.
Very nice vid
Lets go
I heard alot about 4&5 being "woke" before I played and Im not sure where it came from.
@willmelvin2351 I played it on Xbox one and didnt have any problems. So Im not sure why your game was so buggy.
Oh no, this one 💀
It doesn’t add up
2:00:06
I honestly can't sympathize for the protesters considering what has happened the past four to five games.
Yeah the cog government was corrupt but at this point in the timeline I'd rather trust the government that saved Humanity and has the means to do it again then whatever the hell the people want to do living outside of the cities 🤷🏾♂️
what is the 83% joke?
Finally
