The masterstroke of this song is in her saying “You said something” over and over, something she’s never forgotten and was really important; but never saying *what it was.* Very literary, and it keeps us listening to the end
And that "something" could be either "I love you", "I want to call it quits", "I'm sick", "Sorry but I'm gay"... Great, simple but effective songwriting.
Anyone living in NYC in their 20’s experienced this. That magical moment of a night you’ll never forget. And that someone saying or making you feel something you’ll never forget. No matter how short the passion lasted.
@@Oh_I_Will It has a melancholic feel. Plus - when the album was released (2000) I played it on repeat endlessly, so it was the soundtrack to my life for a while, half my lifetime ago. It reminds me of living with friends at university, going to parties, meeting new people, and falling in love for the first time(s). This song in particular really resonated with me, at a time in life (early 20s) when music is a particularly powerful force. So I suppose it doesn't make me sad, so much as it inspires bittersweet memories of a time now lost to me. I hope that makes sense, beyond being just wishy-washy sentimentality!
I don't usually like market musicians but pj harvey, tori amos, especially bjork remind me of the best moments of my childhood. pj harvey is my favorite among this trio. I really like their style and music.
I saw her at Glastonbury Festival this year, I was right down the front of the crowd. I tell you what - she's barely aged a day since this video. I'm not even exaggerating- it's like witchcraft ir something. She still looks incredible, and her music was excellent. I was v sad she didn't play this track tho.😢
I did have both the extreme pleasure and lucky fortune to see her perform live in Seattle, at the Paramount Theatre in late May 1995, where the opening act was Tricky and Martina Topley-Bird performing "Maxinquaye" in its entirety. I still feel beyond grateful for being there at that moment in time, even while trapped in permanent poverty and temporary residence, and still feel deeply sad that nearly 33 years have gone and been done. :'(
On a rooftop in Brooklyn At one in the morning Watching the lights flash In Manhattan I see five bridges The Empire State Building And you said something That I've never forgotten We lean against railings Describing the colors And the smells of our homelands Acting like lovers How did we get here? To this point of living? I held my breath And you said something And I'm doing nothing wrong Riding in your car The radio playing We sing up to the eighth floor A rooftop, Manhattan At one in the morning And you said something That I've never forgotten You said something You said something You said something That was really important
Robert Thompson But they don’t talk about the experience of feeling love for someone else in New York. This song shows the city in a beautiful light. Not urban sprawls trying to make sense of the detriment of society. Polly’s song is about that feeling of finding the beauty with someone you care about
@@MickeyFlipper actually listened to that list of songs. Pj harvey's song is a "movie" that is set in new york, not about new york, but it puts the city in such a good light.

Letterman had great musical guests, but when the song was finished, he always needed to remind the guest that it was HIS show ~ such a condescending person.
What’s wrong with U2...they made (3) good albums...October, War and UF....I can’t critique their later releases...they lost me when they did that Joshua album, thing

@@jrvr9559 for me it was two.
"don't you fucking leave my life again"
and
"you are too young to be this old"
Just listened to this song and thought the exact same thing
It’s obviously open to interpretation & I’m not mad. It’s universal & the genius is simplicity. (… or it’s simplicity is genius)
I think she actually forgot what it was lol
this song, this performance, should have 10,000,000 views!
This is the type of music that should be all over the airwaves....making people realize themselves,...realize each other
Heck no...don’t compare PJ’s music with the rest of the world’s radio...

Letterman showcased many artists that deserved more media recognition ❤
her voice is perfection
She's always so cool
This song... It makes me sad and hopeful and has done since release so many years ago. Stunning.
Why does it make you sad?

I've had a crush on p.j. Harvey for over 20 years. She looks drop dead gorgeous here.

Nice post, best of (better) luck to you in the future
You'll always have that night though. Three great artists right there.
Amazing experience ❤ & so sorry for your situation- sending Love&Light

Only discovered this song today and I'm 42.. amazing track
Matthew Miller BUY THE ALBUM 😀
Never late Matt, never late; ;)
Only discovered this a week ago, and I’m 49…! Way late, but so thankful. Am about to share with my daughter and brother.
The whole album is on this level. Killer songs from start to finish.
the type of song that gives you chills. That handshake, omg...
This song/performance gives me a really euphoric feeling
This song makes me want to be in a rooftop in Brooklyn so bad
One of my favorites from this record.
And you said something that I’ve never forgotten...
On a rooftop in Brooklyn
At one in the morning
Watching the lights flash
In Manhattan
I see five bridges
The Empire State Building
And you said something
That I've never forgotten
We lean against railings
Describing the colors
And the smells of our homelands
Acting like lovers
How did we get here?
To this point of living?
I held my breath
And you said something
And I'm doing nothing wrong
Riding in your car
The radio playing
We sing up to the eighth floor
A rooftop, Manhattan
At one in the morning
And you said something
That I've never forgotten
You said something
You said something
You said something
That was really important
My favourite singer, one of my favourite songs...
I fell in love to this song.
OMG, I'm in love
she's unique
Speechless on how good she looks.
lol i love how he just keeps holding on to her hand and drags her with him when he moves...
and the song is beautiful.
Terrific! One of my favorites from her and I never knew of this performance. Thank you!
Great stuff.
I would love to have said something that PJ never forgotten. Just to touch glasses and say cheers . Gentle kiss on the cheek. Who knows from there.
Que bella cancion...quedara en mi memoria hasta el dia de mi muerte.
pj harvey is my dream girl, talented and smoking hot
Wonderful artist.
Hot Summer night, youth, woozy with the heat and love and passion and nighttime and the possibility of future, and the future of possibility.
una de mis canciona favoritas del disco "Stories from de city, Stories from the sea", aguante pj harvey!!!
Reminds me of Morrissey's You are the quarry UK tour ❤
Wonderful song, and a great talent....
❄ My favourite PJ song 🌙
Thanks p.j.
My favorite song ever 💜
Why don't Americans write songs like this good about NY?

Amazing and talented Polly ❤
Can anyone prompt how is called musical instrument she’s playing here, please?
It's a yamaha qy20.
Thank you
my most favourite song in the world... somewhat ruined by the incredibly awkward exchange at the end.....
I wouldn't let go either
Probably my favourite song too.
Letterman had great musical guests, but when the song was finished, he always needed to remind the guest that it was HIS show ~ such a condescending person.
Who cares about U2? PJ Harvey is art, not a product.
What’s wrong with U2...they made (3) good albums...October, War and UF....I can’t critique their later releases...they lost me when they did that Joshua album, thing
@@Oh_I_Will they made more great albums than those you mention, imo...but they became a product, a joke.
i really want to be in a rooftop in brooklyn , play this song then😢
You can let go of her hand now Dave
#Speakout
What is that thing she wears on her arm? I have seen it on her in a few different clips.
It's a wireless microphone transmitter. You can see the antenna if you pause and look closely.
U2 should have been supporting PJ on her tour.
They did...putting her on the bill was all the support she really needed
Dying to know what he said to her!!
something about pizza
@@Trainy2 Pizza time
he asked her to write a song about that night
I could read his lips on some of what he said....he definitely used the word “Ménage” for some reason...
I think it was "I love you" :)
Перевод: мы сидели на автовокзале Семенова, последний автобус сломался, и мы никуда не поехала, ты сказал что то, что я не забыла!
ok i’m dying my hair black now
She wanted her hand back...
Let go of her hand DAVE
What did he say???
Dave was getting a little handsy there...

She's still fine.
