The Royal School of Needlework BA (Hons) Hand Embroidery Degree students are honoured to have worked with designer Todd Lynn on PJ Harvey's dress which she is wearing to all poetry readings of her new book Orlam. Inspired by Harvey’s own drawings of insects and birds, our Degree Students have captured the essence of the book’s narrative and beautifully translated it through the art of hand embroidery. The specialist needlework was designed to connect with the embroidery heritage of the West Country and features a combination of traditional stiches, including Dorset Feather, Buttonhole, Chain and Fly Stitch. These are stitches which are known worldwide, but also have a distinctive connection to the locality. We are so proud of this project!
I just can't get over the class, kindness, and sincerity of this simple interview- from both of them. Hats off to the British for this example of how basic human interactions are supposed to work. Not to mention the fact that PJ Harvey is one of the coolest, edgiest, sexiest performers ever to grace the stage when she's in another mode. As an American, I concede....you definitely have it more together on your side of the pond:)
I can not help but wonder what life would be like to be so entirely talented, creative, intelligent & painfully sexy & successful on top of it all. Whether man or woman, it must be transcendent. For the record, I'm a straight man of approximately Polly's age & find her irresistible. I've been following her career since I think it must have been 1988 when I got my hands on her first album. Wow! Following; not in a creepy way, (I feel I have to clarify this for the young, tender, soft generation who might be reading this comment) just good old honest admiration & appreciation for her raw talent & intelligence. Yeah, & a healthy dose of physical attraction towards her inescapable beauty & sexiness. My god, those lips when she sings & snarls with that powerful, amazing voice & those legs when she struts & shimmies about with her guitar on stage! This mild, soft spoken woman sitting on that couch having a pleasant conversation about a book & a dress can rock & I mean rock hard! Carry on Polly Jean Harvey.
This has to be the smartest woman ive ever seen in my life. Im 24, not that my age matters but im a huge fan of her music, i saw her live in Detroit performing songs which were from orlam, i had to pick up a copy. Its definitely a hard read but an interesting one. Not only did polly jean win 2 Mercury price awards, but she set out to be a poet and a successful one. She draws sophisticated art work that is brilliant. I wrote her a letter that successfully got to london. Hoping to hear back i just had to thank her for how genuine she is, for giving us what she has in her career. I love her and her work. My generation can definitely learn a lot from this dorset lady. She seems kind, and humble. Unlike what was initially thought of her as a vixen rock queen from heII. I never thought that when i first started listening to her. Just when you think you figured her out she unravels another secret to her talent. Because she is ambitious and challenges herself. Pj harvey is quite possibly the most important musician figure still going. I hope she lives a long healthy life. Can’t imagine a world without polly jean. Love from America
What a fantastic short interview. Frank Skinner is reapectful, engaged and interested in what she has to say. Polly Jean Harvey is, as always in interviews, her beautiful, unpretentious self. She always comes across as a simply lovely human being.
I grew up in an era where being from Dorset, and having a rural Dorset accent was a bit of a joke to british people, but I have a deep connection to the place, and I can see this connection in her. She's one of those amazing people who have the courage to let her inner self right out, in the form of her art. Honest, and sometimes fully exposed, most of us would never be able to do that.
Well I LoVe how you've said that..."the courage to let her inner self right out in the form of her art" Beauutifully said , yes, most of us wouldn't be able to do that.
Polly is simply an extraordinary one-off. She is the only person who can speak with a rural 'yokel' accent yet be the coolest of cool on stage and hence cut it with the most sophisticated urbanite. I mean Pam Ayers managed to attract a bit of fame, but her accent made her 'a bit of a joke' as you say.
I lived in Wiltshire and Cornwall and loved the dialect. Dorset idioms are no doubt unique but I feel that it's very much just that west country dialect. My family on mom's side is black country and that's full of unique idioms. I live that about Britain it's so linguistically diverse especially the ancient indigenous.
Man, she is likeable. Such a lady, a very large wealth of art has come from this wonderful lady and I'm quite sure that she still has so much yet to do. I was never really prepared for how cool her music is when I first heard 50 Ft Queenie. News to me that she's British! No wonder I like her. She has that bold art form like Kate Bush has.
Absolute pure genius,so influential to any discerning decent artists that are anyway talented out there, and probably the most grounded and modest music icon that I've ever seen..A proper peerless, special, and unique musician..
Fantastic! Incredible how PJ Harvey "transformed" from a rock star to a really mature artist. But of course PJ please do not forget your music fans too :)
PJ has an incredible talent of "morphing" into different personas for the sake of her art. If you listen to Ride of Me, Stories from the city, stories from the sea and White Chalk, you wouldn't guess it's the same artist, both sonically and aesthetically.
@@phildemmon9025 easiest is just to write her name in the search bar and jump from one song to another, because… it depends what you like. Superb. I could listen to her Bridport tones forever. She’s never ever been dull or been guilty of repeating herself. So glad she branched off into poetry. Now all we need is a new PJ Harvey album.

@Tony Montana - Thank you so much for posting this; I can't believe it took me almost a month to find it! When it was mentioned on IG, I thought I'd never see it, so thanks a bunch.
I was privileged enough to see her interview and reading at the Heartland Festival in Denmark a couple of months ago. It ran about 1 hour 15 minutes. Her choice of eyewear was a pince-nez - I can see that the discomfort of experience made her drop the idea again.
