Welcome to the Hold On Club how Hold On are ya?
Very hold on.
Not very hold on
Im holding on well enough
Holding on decently
extremely hold on.
Whoever did the visual effects for this game nailed that deep sea footage.
Its slightly off but that can not be helped.. Overall I really do agree with you tho.
@@UndyingZombie I think the glossy effect and void-esque background played a role in that, but who am I to judge a talented designer? Still incredible visuals
Props to the cameraman
@@monotonedevelopment Cameramen survive everything
@@Founder6087 It's the law
Well, I have to say I am impressed by the graphics. It feels quite real, it's spot on.
I saw a fps like this. The low video quality helps fool the user making seen like its real
Just needs some wobbly-ness with the ROV arms and particles in the water
@@NubAnSkrub it's the film grain it tricks the brain into filling the bits made by the film grain in and it appears more real
@@Bloodfangmh as someone who uses a mini dv camcorder I can still tell the difference
@@Bloodfangmh is that why film grain is turned on by default in every game ever?
My dad used to work for a company that built these things, and he says the developer nailed the design of the ROV! Pretty cool
Has your dad even seen something inexplicable down there ?
I like this kind of simulation horror.
@@974cerebrate He didn't operate them, just engineer them.
@@justinthompson6364 I see, sorry I misunderstood.
_You_ might not have been in trouble, but ROV operators get _very_ attached to these machines. In September 2021 the team of E/V _Nautilus_ lost the beloved ROV _Hercules_ in 2200m of water, and instead of writing it off they actually undertook a recovery mission with the assistance of R/V _Thompson_ and ROV _Jason_ which resulted in a successful recovery.
that's so cute!
Hi, marine biologist here. It's not that we get attached (we do, it just doesn't factor into the recovery aspect), but these things cost tens of millions of dollars. *_Each._* We literally can't afford to lose one. It's far more cost effective to attempt a recovery than to write it off and make a new one, or try to obtain enough data with fewer DSV units. If you lost $40,000,000 at the bottom of the ocean, you sure as hell are going to do whatever it takes to get it back!
Holy shit. My oceanography professor was on the Nautilus and worked with Hercules on a research voyage in the Mediterranean in the early 2010s! It was a survey of several underwater volcanoes, though I can't quite remember the details. That class was a few semesters back. Really weird to hear about them now!
@@willyeeton4390 That's super cool! I wonder if they have that one archived.
@@WobblesandBean That makes sense. I was going off the reaction of the crews mostly, but I guess you wouldn't write off a car sized robot without trying to recover it anyway. I also remember my feelings on the matter, but I get emotionally attached to just about any hardware.
The VHS filter aesthetic can feel a bit overplayed lately, but this is one of those examples where it *really* works in the game's favor and where it feels right instead of just being a stylistic choice for the sake of nostalgia.
I share your thoughts, but this time I liked it because those recording look like that, and if you se *actual* footage, they sometimes can look worse.
Yea shout-out to the developers for making a good use of this filter
why VHS aesthetic? because blurs are used in CGI to hide imperfection, but blur goes against user preference for sharp & high-resolution image, so use a comfortable aesthetic that have blurs integrated in it, like VHS. Like CGI from 90s movie.
Dude same, Makes less sense tbh with the common ps1 style things though i can understand its to make it easier, But this one is actually realistic.
It’s more of a deep sea footage aesthetic, developer was not going for vhs look, even modern deep sea footage looks like this
It was rather short though, I feel like they could've expanded it a bit more to spook you a few more times before the jumpscare. However, I guess it did kind of work in some way because they were able to jumpscare manly and it's probably because he wasn't expecting the jumpscare so quick. Also, was it just me or did it feel like the last "sample" kept moving away for a bit before the end?
Yes the last sample moves, it's more noticeable and affective when playing it as you approach you notice the thing is not static and seems to be getting further but then suddenly closer.
@@ManlyBadassHero oh thanks for the confirmation, that's a pretty cool detail for the dev to add you actually being lured a bit. Authentic to how it actually hunts. Also, kinda funny how even though we as humans think we would know better but still fall into prey habits pretty easily irl.
i'd say it did. like did you hear the scream Manly let out in the end? i heard genuine fear/surprise that i've never heard before from him
Okay so it's a purpose to take samples for research?
I don't mind shorter games. Expanding the game would have required adding more tasks to the drone operation I think. Right now, you repeat one single task but it's not so long that it overstays its welcome.
Manly getting spooked is such a rare blessing.
Honestly, I was searching for a Video in which he gets scared at least once.. I nearly gave up :D

This was a good one. Reminded me of Iron Lung like you said, but the atmosphere was more familiar and, in the end, nothing truly alien.
Yeah, it was kinda like Iron Lung wasnt it? Slightly different way of interacting, but it was a cool way to do it still!
Any jump scare that doesn't use *_LOUD NOISES_* as a crutch is a good jump scare. This one was timed perfectly, just enough time to realize something is off but not enough to figure out what exactly.
4:40 Nice catch! There are actual scientists that can't pull roboacrobatics like that!
those scientists should recruit some gamers for ROV control jobs, lots of folks would do it in a heartbeat
No
maybe because real life is a little bit harder than video games, buddy. That's why we play it in the first place
It looks really nice and realistic, but I can't help but think more should have been done to make it feel like it takes place in the ocean. No water is that perfectly clear, it feels more like you are in some sort of void.
I thought the same, the only real visual indication you're in water is the shaders and lighting on the models.
I guess I have seen videos where it looks like that at a great depth, but there are more weird little particles floating around. something like that would probably sell it a bit more :)
@@FeenieVonKarma the ocean is actually disgusting and imposisble to be clear at that depth, just think of all the stuff that sinks liek animals that have passed
@@TemmiePlays Actually dead animals float because if the gas that builds up in corpses🤓☝️
True, the addition of some deep sea falling "snow" would have made it a lot more immersive.
That subtle shake when movement of the camera or arm starts and stops is great, just enough to immerse without being too noticeable!
I'm all for grounded horror games, with realistic scenarios in horrifying or spooky situations.
This was some of the best I've seen! Looked like an actual deep sea submersible with the cameras and the controls.
You know you did a jumpscare well when manly sounds genuinely frightened
@@dylanmonstrum1538 There was a good buildup to then monster throughout the game, the subversion of expectation with a scare when we were used to the mechanic of extracting samples. You could even see it watching throughout like it was patiently waiting for the right time to pounce. So yes I personally do believe it is a good utilization of horror
@@NyanNegotiable Ive seen that guy on multiple comment sections and it is always being negative about something.

6:04 the big bloop was actually the sound of an iceberg breaking off glacier in Antarctica. Known as "icequakes"
That's why the noise was so big
I love the motion on this, it feels extremely realistic
This has got to be the most thoughtfully considered and successful aesthetic approach to any game even hinting at analog horror, be it remotely monitored arrays of security cameras, POV handheld camcorders, or direct CCTV feeds, that I've ever seen.
Not just the static/noise and image resolution, which are table stakes by now, but the camera-mounted light convincingly blowing out the highlights of foreground elements, the thoughtful interface overlay and its horizontal blurring/doubling, making it that much more convincing-hell, even the naturally jerky movement of the camera motors feels incredibly authentic.
I mean, the UA-cam thumbnail for this video literally just looked like a deep sea expedition caught on tape. Seriously mental. For that reason alone, well done, Grubwall.
I sincerely appreciate the seismic anomaly being considered as the bloop sound. Though the anglerfish isn’t the source of the noise it definitely creates a jump scare.
The "BLOOP" was actually an iceberg scrapping the bottom of the seafloor, but in this case.... an angler fish.
Isn't that unconfirmed? And manly sounded sarcastic.
@@Dice-Z they have found similar sounds elsewhere and determined the bloop was just a large event of the same type. Icebergs are the loudest thing in the ocean by orders of magnitude greater than anything else.
The bloop happened in the pacific ocean off the coast of South America. There are no icebergs there, you're thinking of a different underwater sound.
@@Mechagodzilla128 yes your 100% right. I realized this a day ago as well while watching something else that covered it. 🙏
@@jasoncolvin5725 it was in fact an ice berg. Because of the currents being funneled through such a small area in the cape it's not at all uncommon for large bits of ice shelf from Antarctica to break off making incredibly loud noises and since water unlike air is an uncompressable medium, sound travels further. Also they find large icebergs all over the south pacific from Antarctica bouncing around until they melt. I guess what I'm saying is people think pacific and think Hawaii or Philippines...there's Siberia pacific and Antarctic Pacific as well...which are cold. What the bloop is not is a animal. Icebergs are the loudest events in the ocean with no comparison to anything else. The bloop was many orders of magnitude greater in terms of decibels than any large whale. The frequency of the event closely mirrors the same events heard on hydrophones all over the earth that have been confirmed as ice calving events. As much as I wish Cthulu or Nob Gizzoth were down there burping I doubt it's the case. I digress...the o'chin is a scary..
This is a surprising upload time for Manly but I'm not complaining! This game was very atmospheric and subtleness was a nice touch, not the biggest fan of jumpscares but this one was super well done! I agree with the contrast to horror, it really gives that feeling of unease to surprise
Wow... gaming really HAS evolved a lot over the years. It just was never going to be the big studios doing the change but the ability of smaller indi devs to really explore all these new genres. I can feel the influence youtube and other media also have on this
Fresh Manly vid is the best way to start a Sunday.
I just witnessed my best friend almost die today and now I’m afraid to go to sleep. But your videos are helping so much, you don’t know how much your videos and your existence means to me manly. I hope you know the powerful impact you have on creating videos. Sending much love

@@jonathanrobles1734 hm... yeah, you're right, but I don't really rememeber the scream to be "as" horrified?
A shorter experience but not at all diminished by that. This was great, very atmospheric. The ending did get me, I had all but fully dropped my guard at that point.
I loveee the captions “hey everyone this is manly badass cereal” 😂 I laughed harder than I should have
5:50 Manly made a spinny reference!
He sure enjoy those spins.
I don't need an ROV horror game to show me eldritch abominations under the sea.

That was cool! Really love the how it was designed. The deep dark deep down is always so spook since yeah it does look like a black void of darkness. I really wish there were more games that showed this black abyss since just being in there is like already terrifying. Like that one section of soma. They can have anything just be barely visible in the camera passing by and it would still seem scary. I do like how much thought was put into how the rov functions. I was half expecting an angler fish and half expecting some monstrous horrifying thing. With how focused you are in something that requires so much precision and focus i think the jumpscare was really well executed
I felt chills as you were articulating that arm. People who can tolerate saturation dives are remarkable. Darkness, an environment which is looking for any means into your suit inorder to kill you. And God knows what else is out there and not yet cataloged in some marine life journals.
The visual style of this game is absolutely stunning
Man that even caught manly off guard! Which is quite rare :0. Made me spill my tea
Good game! Reminds me of those submarine videos
_Good thing it was remote!_
I always love ocean-based games.
I was wondering if somehow the mama or papa of all those sample pieces would somehow emerge, but that was cool. Also, pretty nice detail on the operation of the vehicle and claw. Bet you're good at claw machine games too, MBH!
this is genius. this has always been a phobia of mine, what a perfect setting to a horror game.
just you, alone. in complete darkness. surrounded by shit you wont even recognize. that is creepy as all hell not to mention how powerless you are in the ocean.
I would absolutely love a full game like this. Games like this and the ones Mike Klubnika makes are some of my favourites.
Wow I just love the graphics in this. It really captures that blurry look older cameras used to have.
This would spooked me even more if i had thalassophobia, the surreal vibe of the game nailed it!
I watched the whole thing thinking it was real footage until I saw the organic thing and turned the audio on. Great job whoever did this.
This game’s visuals remind me of watching EVNautilus streams; they really nailed the darkness. I also had a good chuckle at the 66(1+5) DPT.

IS THE NUMBER OF THE...fish.
I mean the horror game aspect is fun, but honestly make a sea exploration game based around these rovers as this looks awesome!
nahh why is nobody talking about that scream Manly let out in the end? I heard the GENUINE fear from that scream
If only we get a dollar for every thing we discover something we shouldn't in horror games. We might be able to buy something to fill Manly's empty soul xD
Fill it with Fumos!
I like these horror games that are part simulators. Anything where you need to manage a vehicle, a platoon, a set of drones etc. Duskers was the game where drone management was a huge part of the game, and you only see the world through their limited sensors.
It's a little similar to other "job horror" games where you are given a set of routine tasks and the horror sneaks up just outside the scope of those tasks. It is a much better distraction for the players instead of puzzles and arbitrary walls.
i'm impressed by how it really looks like deep sea exploration footage. it's just missing the marine snow, which is mostly organic dead stuff continuously raining down to the ocean floor. it's pretty important for the ocean since that's how life from the bottom of the ocean gets its energy from near the surface
its always the games with lighting like this, or with bright light or strong light contrasts that look the most realistic, i love it
In the oil industry side of ROVs, if you lose a sub as a supervisor, you typically get promoted to superintendent
As an industry SSR Superintendent, I can confirm... 🤣
This was a great one. The graininess of the video feed really lent to the realism since that's how these deep sea rovers usually look from a camera.
From the thumbnail I actually thought this was just new footage from an ROV expedition
Jumpscared Manly is so rare to see, but it brings me joy every time. Although my favorite jumpscared Manly videos are still from Spirit Hunter NG and A dark place 2.
I cannot emphasize how good the visuals are for this concept
I really like SEE-ing your content.
Heeeeey, good one!
are you shore about that?
@@JunkyardGod the joke is that the word sounds the same.
Get out
TL;DR Robot go pinchy pinchy, Angler Fish go bitey bitey
There is actually another game kinda like this, called Scavenger SV-4. It’s part simulator part horror game. I’m surprised it’s not gotten more attention considering how popular games like Iron Lung have been recently.
As someone who studies mechanics like these, I am glad to say this is SUPER realistic
The only thing this is missing is the water.
This water is amazingly clean for it being the ocean, and there's no air bubbles or any displacement when you move. It's quite jarring once you've seen what underwater ROV videos look like.
Other than that, nicely done
The headline is legit the best in centuries
Oh no why does that look so real really uncanny
I like how it kinda has that shiny-plastic 90's 3D rendering look to it.
I even figured it could be a lure and expected it to happen, but it got me part alert and part smiling anyway. One day I'll get the hang of watching these as just recordings rather than part of me thinking I can do anything to help get someone out of the way.
I know it will be a good day when Manly uploads while it's daytime in my time zone
Manly: gets caught off guard at the end.
Me: Yup, exactly what I thought was going to happen.😂
If you want, I can design you a very simple laser, guided feedback to where you just point a pen laser right on the subject that you want to collect with the robot arm and the camera will sense that laser beam and redirect the robot arm to its coordinates. There are quite a few ways to do this, depending on your set up. If you have everything attached to a PC I would suggest installing Robo realm for the most features.
Anyone else get some serious pareidolia off of that first growth? It looked like there was a face embedded in the growth and I can’t tell if it was intentional or if I need more sleep.
As a robot technician I wish my high school robotics class had a game like this to play during down time, learning the joint controls for a robot like this is a great way for a young kid to have fun and develop skills that would serve them well if they went into my industry.
The Filter in this game is SO GOOD. Seriously, the biggest budget games dont make filters look this real! It actually looks loke an underwater recording from those videos about Delta P. If you dont know what Delta P is, i suggest looking it up. Its horrifying.
Ocean horrors get more so much more than haunted houses. that feeling of powerlessness. you are in an open void and don't know what's lurking in the darkness beneath you. you can't see it, but it can see you, and at any moment, it'll lunge forward at you.
11:38 - This is the most spooked I've ever heard from Manly!

This could be a really scary game. Can't wait to see what it does.
You fell for one of the classic blunders, trusting the bright light in the dark depths.
That was a genuine raw shocked reaction Manly let out
Got a kidney stone. Relaxing at home getting acquainted with an old pal named ManlyBadassHero's videos.
You can see how much effort is put into this short game.
it looks like you control a real life ROV
Love the games in the genre of Do Tedious Work In Closed Spaces And Then Get Jumpscared At The End.
What a neat concept! Love the atmosphere and especially loved that the weird flesh stuff is a red herring. It's probably just a weird bacteria megacolony. Great bite-sized game!
Not too often you hear Manly get genuinely jump scared 🤣
I knew the light was the anglernfish.
Just a light to draw ya in.
Closed captions: Hey everyone this is manly badass cereal
Captions say this is manly badass cereal, and boy am I hungry! :D
It's official; I will literally watch Manly play any type of horror game out there - even one that involves him literally being an RV drone operator collecting random deep sea samples....😂
This has to be the worst experience that you will ever have when you are working underwater. I would probably just let myself drown rather than dping this
I have a feeling screenshots of this game gonna be used in some conspiracy forums, the effects, material and animation composition are fantastic
I thought I wasn't wearing my glasses halfway in, truly an astigmatism simulator.
Even though I new this was the moment the jumpscare was going to happen it caught me off guard as well. It didn't need to use loud sound or flashing lights, nor quick teleporty movement. Just a low growl as the fish lunges towards you. Very good. I feel this game may feel a little scarier if you were in some kind of sub with a character in it, atleast for me. Its more easy to get attached to a character/person and ominous noises and other things would feel more scary. Very good game though
This is actually better than I was expecting! I was expecting some ps1 era trash looking arm that basically only moved up and down 😂
Actually it really use underwater stuff in real life
You can hear Manly get pretty spooked, not normal spooked, spook spooked.
They nailed the hurk-jerk motions of the ROV arm.
I had to repeat the last part since I was so focused my own scream didn't allowed me at first to appreciate Manly getting spooked too
I don't understand how people enjoy the repetitive games of doing simple task for 30 minuets to an hour just to get jump scared at the end and end credits.
I love how from all the kind of lovecraftian creatures you could put the dev just used an AnglerFish and it was enough to make me jump jajaja
This right here just tells me, somebody can and should make a crappy game where you operate a CNC lathe.
Because nobody knows how to train anybody how to use one, and a game would help tremendously.
I fuggin' called it when you went to get the last sample, and it still got me.
I swear I have been on this analog ocean horror kick and both concepts terrify me.
This is so cool! I’m currently in school getting into the commercial diving field. After looking through lots of videos of our teacher showing us his ROV flying videos this thumbnail looked really familiar!😂
Feels a bit like Iron lung with the combo of the anglerfish hunting you and the silence.
Ok, now THIS is a cool concept I wish more people did for horror! ROVs exist in pitch black, at such crushing depths you cannot survive outside of your claustrophobic rover. Things exist down there, strange beings few people have ever seen, let alone documented.
You'd think it'd be more widely utilized in horror games, but no.
Omg the wobble physics is the icing on the cake
I love the aesthetic: the bloom really sells the idea it ia underwater.
