      Mark, my first Nord was the Electro 4D 61 about 10 years ago ... pretty much sat in the closet. I'm pretty much a solo or duo acoustic player. I started playing keys again in my duo (now trio and quartet at times); upgraded to the Electro 6HP - couldn't be happier with the sound and feel and your tutorials on how to use!

      @@Schembre So happy to hear this. My first Nord was the Electro 3. Then the 5. Had to get the Stage 3 and then I started to make videos. I recently realized that the channel is really about music appreciation for keyboardists and I mostly use Nord as the foundation toolset to build with. It has been quite the journey so far surrounded by a great community of like-minded individuals who also love music. 🎼

    Dear Master, Thank you for all the information! I need to know if in the sample editor 2 /3 /4 I can make a sound with different velocity range like the famous take 6 sound in the Roland XP-30 of Spectrasonics Jazz Scat do bo bap paw. I have the keyboard, the five samples, but, I cant find this function in the sample editor or in the nord stage 3. A big hug for you. God Bless You.

      @mikeluisipiano Hey Mike! So, unfortunately the Nord Sample Editor doesn't support multiple velocities in this way. The only way I can think to do something like this would be to incorporate a MIDI Filter box and have it sense incoming velocity to target one layer or the other. The setup would be a lot of monkey business and and in the end, you may not get the desired result and it may require the use of all 3 layers as well (at least two layers).

    Dear Marc, Can I make a sound with a 4 samples in a one note , for example, C4, from 4 different wavs files? For example a piano, an organ, trumpet and string, all with the same key velocity? I try to do that but when i consolidate the sound only the active layer, 1, 2 ,3 or 4 exports to the NS3. Can I export one file with the 4 samples in the same note? Thank You Master. God bless you.

      @mikeluisipiano Hi Mike! Yes, in order to "layer" sounds so that they play under a single key or single set of keys, you'll need to mix the sounds first during the recording process. You cannot do this directly in the Nord Sample Editor software alone. In fact, I demonstrate exactly how to do this in my free course at www.MyKeysToMusic.com called "Master the Nord Sample Editor"

      @@mikeluisipiano I'm not sure I understand your question here. The Nord Sample Editor allows you to import multiple samples that can be assigned to a keyboard range. The buttons allow you to pick which sample to choose from. You can only have one sample assigned to the same key at one time. THat's why if you want to have multiple sounds layered on a single key, you have to do that ahead of time in your Wav file at the recording stage long before you import into the Nord Sample Editor.

    How do you record directly from The Nord to The Nord Sample Editor. Do you need to go into your sound card first?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  10 місяців тому

      @artnelsoncreative Hey Art! So, recording directly from the keyboard to the sample editor has been very tricky for me (I'm using a Mac). I think it has to do with the sound routing and I really haven't been able to easily click a button and go right from the Nord to the Nord Sample editor. I also haven't taken the time to deeply explore this and solve that issue. So, what I end up doing is using a DAW to record the initial sound(s) and then I save it as a WAV file or AIFF file. Then, I bring that into the Nord Sample Editor. This also gives you the advantage of preparing the sample a bit ahead of time where you can make last-minute adjustments to volume and cut out any wrong notes you might have played, etc.
      I do make a free course available on my website called "Master the Nord Sample Editor" if you haven't already checked that out. There, I demonstrate a few different sampling techniques depending on the situation. www.MyKeysToMusic.com Later this year I hope to add a few more lessons there specific to the Nord Stage 4 as well. I'm still finishing up the NS4 Pro course which now has over 25 hours of content and 125+ lessons!

    How do you play a wav file by just pressing a key on the Stage 4. It seems like I have to hold the key to play the entire wav file.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  10 місяців тому +1

      @artnelsoncreative Hello, Art! Ideally, after you sample something and have it prepared for the Nord Stage 4, you would use the "KB Hold" button found in the synth section and turn it on for that synth layer. Then, when you play the sample, it "sticks," and you don't have to hold down the key with your finger. If you also split the keyboard and have the sample assigned to only play on one side or the other, you can then use the other part of the keyboard with another synth sound or piano/organ as well. That way, your sample continues to hold while you use the other part of the keyboard to either play along and/or do something else. The setup will depend on what song you plan to do and what is needed for a particular performance.
      Pro tip: If you turn the "KB Hold" on and want to apply it only to a single layer, you need to go to the other synth layers and exclude the hold. You'll find the "Exclude" option available when you hold the shift button and push the KB hold button. It takes some getting used to that at first, but once you get the concept, it's very powerful (and essential) for many synth sounds and/or samples you use.

    Hi Mark, here's a tip I find useful. For sampling chromatic instruments I have a midi file that plays the notes I want to sample on my Modx, with a nice gap between each one, all set at 127 velocity. I can then record this sequence of notes using any selected sound on the Modx, bounce it to wave and drag into the sample editor. I can then select all samples, set up the loop on the first one, which then does it to all. This is a really quick way of getting a fully looped sample to the Nord. I also have a similar set up on an Akai key 61. Once you can play the sample on the Nord you can spot anything that needs tweaking and go back to the editor.

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Рік тому

      @lofty1963 This is a brilliant way to sample and I think it would work for most sounds. Last week I was sampling the Nord White Grand and found that when I used 127 velocity, it would sound each key at the “max strength” and it ended up being too much expression on every note. I settled on about two thirds instead. The Nord pianos are very dynamic as you know. Now, if there was only a way where we could sample notes and include multiple levels of velocity per note like Nord does with the pianos… Thanks for your input here, love this idea.

    Electro 6 I would like to add drum samples to the existing Nord samples. Is there a way to do this without resampling the Nord sample?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  2 роки тому +1

      Hi @phil Wheeler Machynlleth wheeler great question and the answer is not really. Once you have a completed sample from the Nord factory, you cannot open it up and tweak it to add your own samples to it. You'd have to re-record their sample first so that you have the raw WAV files. Then you could merge this sample with your own drums.
      *Here are instructions on creating your drum samples from scratch and then merging that with a given Nord sample:*
      1) First, record your drum samples if you don't already have them. Record or prepare drum samples and save them as Wav files. (you can also record each drum tone and export it as a single Wav file too).
      2) Load your favorite Nord sample. Record that into your DAW and save several notes as a single Wav file.
      3) Connect your Nord keyboard and position it in a brand new (blank) program. This will be where you'll assign your custom sample.
      4) Prepare and configure your recorded sounds in the Nord Sample Editor (assign each sound to a given key on the keyboard - tweak as needed - you'll have both your drum wav and your Nord factory sample loaded at the same time in the Nord Sample Editor).
      4) When you save your sample, it should auto-upload to your keyboard. This will not remove existing samples but, rather, add your custom sample to your keyboard.
      5) Make sure your new sample is assigned to a program on your Nord keyboard. Save that untitled program you have (which now has your sample assigned) and give it a name of your choosing like "Phil Drum Mix".
      If you haven't already, I highly recommend you enroll in my free "Master the Nord Sample Editor course". This will be a couple of hours (and more) but well worth spending because there is a lot to all this the first time out. What you are asking to do is a bit on the high end of complexity for sampling with your Nord keyboard. This is why I recommend you take the course so you can walk before you run - especially if this is all new to you. There are many aspects to sampling and lots of options for you too. You can find the free course at www.MyKeysToMusic.com and it's called "Master the Nord Sample Editor"
      Good luck! - Marc

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  3 роки тому

      @Alexandra Senna - Great idea and that has been mentioned by others as well. As more and more people move to mobile devices as their primary computer, this request becomes more of a reality I would think. It does become a bigger investment however for the manufacturers so I think that's largely why you don't see these things happen right away if at all. Clavia/Nord don't have the deep pockets of a Yamaha, Korg, or Roland for example. But in any case, you're right. We want slick tech to accompany our keyboard if possible. 👍🏼

    How does this work for a kronos rhodes with auto panning, if I record the sample in stereo will it maintain the panning?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  Рік тому +1

      Great question! @Deja Gruv Band I just tested this and it works! The stereo sound is maintained. However, as you move up the notes, the pan speed increases and when you move down the notes, the pan speed descreases (because the sample is trying to align the pitch). You'd have to sample every note if you wanted the pan speed to be the same on every note.
      However, when it comes to sampling the Kronos Rhodes, why not first remove the auto panning from the Kronos, then record your sample of just the tones (with no effects and no pan). Then you can add the pan effect directly on the Nord and you'll get a much more pro result that way. Same with reverb - at it after the fact for your samples.
      In any case, I was excited to hear however that the stereo aspects of a given sound/sample are maintained via the Nord playback.
      Hope that helps!

To do this we may need special software which re-routes the sound. I've included a link here for this. At this point, it may be just as easy/efficient exporting from the DAW to a WAV or AIFF file. Here is the software called Loopback which was designed for things like this: rogueamoeba.com/loopback/ Note this is a paid program but they do offer a free trial.

      @MyKeysToMusic  3 роки тому

      @@vitsamutsu Ah, yes, there is likely room for improvement in their offering. From what I hear, the #1 request from people is that they wish the sample editor allowed them to sample multiple velocities per note. I tend to agree with this.
      Also, I want to invite you to my free course which you may find helpful for this available at www.MyKeysToMusic.com "Master the Nord Sample Editor". In the course, I break down each type of sample you may want to do in its own lesson and take things step by step. It covers many of the concepts of sampling and puts a practical spin on things that may have more meaning and context to what your end goal might be as a keyboard player. Worth a look if you have a couple hours to invest. Most walk away having the skills to sample their old keyboard or create layered sounds on a single program etc. Lots of stuff in there.

      @@MyKeysToMusic The "sample multiple velocities per note" is the kicker. Do you think this may happen at some stage? Is there a technical reason why it's not available?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  2 роки тому

      @@sharondavismusic7594 My guess is that they won't incororate this anytime soon. They "recently" released version 4 of the Sample Editor and it did not have this feature. I suspect that incorprating this advanced option would make the software more difficult to use (and program). Here too, perhaps only a smaller subsection of people wanting to make samples would have the need (or the discipline) to create multiple velocities per sample. It means a lot more work for the creator which could perhaps backfire on them leaving people ultimately frustrated. But, I really don't know the reason they leave this option out.
      If you look at their MIDI implemnation on the boards themselves, they include basic features but not advanced features. This again is another example where perhaps they limit the options to keep the programming easier and the usage and understanding that much easier for the end user too. It could also be a resources issue as their company is notably smaller than the likes of a Roland, Yamaha or Korg for example. So, asyou can clearly tell, I'm making some wild guesses here as to "why" they don't include velocities but I really don't know for sure. ❓
