Bought a house in vegas last year. People looked at me like im insane when i told them I want to have a food forest in the middle of vegas. No HOA. 1 year later I have 40 fruit trees. Veggies/healthy soil a she shed converted into a living room. Close to 150 different species of flowering bush/herbs and spices. And chickens. Love this video
Yes, since you asked, a plant based diet is the way to go. Thank you for all the wonderful videos. I live in an apartment in Utah. So you've inspired me to grow microgreens on a much larger scale. L.E.D. lights arrived yesterday. Soil and more seeds tomorrow. Shelves, azomite, worms by next week. Yay!
Great video, Kevin! I laughed at the part where you roast the carrots at the nursery 😂 I literally have the exact same thoughts when I visit my local nursery and see carrot seedlings for sale like that.
Yipee…chickens !!! So many fun breeds now too. When I had chicks, the choices were pretty much limited to Rhode Island Reds and Barred Rocks. Will be fun to hear all the cute “ chicken noises” while you garden. DE is great for them to take their dust baths in to prevent mites btw
For beginer gardeners, like me, it is good to see your nethod of planting leeks. It was simple to understand and follow. I look forward to planting my first leeks next year in zone 7. Although a vegan, I am looking forward to seeing the chicken coop and your vision come to life. Thank you for sharing. I enjoyed "shopping" along with you two. I can't wait for next year's potatoes.
Make sure you check your local ordinances about chickens. There is probably a rule about minimum distance from the property line. Make sure you don't put the coop to close to the fence. Excited to see the coop!
Great video bud, growing tons of good stuff but still struggling with diet control definitely resonates with me, and I'm sure a lot of us. Appreciate you touching on that!
It would be quite an epic move for me to go to a place where I could even consider planting outdoors in November. I can't wait to see the finished chicken habitat. Do you know what kind of chickens you want to get?
For mizuna, I bought the seedlings once and let them go to seed, and now I have mizuna seeds for a lifetime! Also growing in different parts of the garden - voluntary plants.
I had that with arugula, when I lived in Arizona. I went on a trip at the end of their lives, and they went to seed. They even spread to the bed of my truck and sprouted from rain!
Once you get the coop up, you should put some dandelions or other deep rooted plants in there along with clover and a variety of grasses. That way there's a solid crop of plant material full of protein, minerals, phyto-nutrients, etc that make chickens happy. Some grasses that would be good would be alfalfa, oat, fescue, flax. There are also premade blends you can purchase that has all this stuff for generalized locations. I'd personally throw in some beet seeds as well. Healthy snack they have to work for It's essentially what I do for feed plots for deer and turkeys, high protein forage that contains lots of omega fatty acids and minerals for the healthiest food for the animals. Should make the eggs from your layers super healthy and decrease the risk of common nutrition-based health issues in the chickens.
I've been putting some mizuna in small quantities in a simple mixed salad of various greens, to add variety of color, shapes, and flavor. The salad is mostly lettuce as the base. Ruby red leaf and red salad bowl lettuce has done well for me this fall. Then a little bit of each: red streaks mizuna, Tokyo bekana, arugula. And a fair bit of tatsoi, I like how sweet tatsoi is. Then I throw in a small cut up tomato and give it a basic Italian dressing. Sometimes I add a few dashes of home made orange habanero sauce to the dressing, and that's works surprisingly well. I stopped adding frisee endive to my salad as it's just too bitter for me. Though the endive was nice as a braised green. Started with onions sauteed in olive oil and butter, added water, vinegar, sugar, hot sauce and the frisee endive. Cooked it down until the endive was tender. But that's my go to for basically all greens. Beet greens, turnip greens, radish greens, swiss chard, etc.
I'm glad you mentioned that mizuna is great in salads. It's SO good raw and is literally the only way I eat it. One of the faves for fall/winter. Epic leek haul. I'm in Cardiff but def making my way to Walter Andersen bc I'm LATE on starting seeds this year and need to pick up some of those. 😬 LMK if you need a solid rec for getting super healthy pullets. So excited for you...chickie-doodles are literally the best thing ever. So fun.
While he plants his starts while wearing flip flops, I'm pulling out my frost-killed snow peas while wearing gloves to dust off the dusting of snow we received last night. California dreamin for sure
Great video as always. You never fail to give 100% in your episodes and we appreciate that. I am going to give potatoes a try soon so will be watching your potato videos several times. Can't wait to see your feather babies!
Can't wait to see the new chicken coop, looks good so far, I currently need some winter mulch and cold loving flowers for the pollinators still hanging in there, it's getting down to freezing temperatures where I'm living, I'm overwintering some of my flowers and bushes from last summer
Hi Kevin! I grow a crap ton of Mizuna, usually direct sowing them all over the place. It's a great thing to grow in my area because birds and other animals eat just about everything else. But, not the mizuna! the mizuna has free reign to grow in my backyard. I'm currently sitting on about 20 lbs of mizuna or more. Usually, I make a monster salad in my biggest party bowl that I fill with mizuna, tomatoes, and dried fruits. other times i just juice it.
Oh no baby boy, protect your knees! You guys are lucky you can still find potatoes , I'm here in Texas and we have to preorder ours and we don't received them till next year in February . Happy gardening to you and Jaques
Thanks for all the tips when purchasing starts, great way to maximize your harvest. Looking forward to the finished chicken coop, you will be like a new “daddy” and Jaqués will be the “uncle” to the Epic Chickens 🐓 🐣🐥🐓 Just imagine all the fresh eggs you will have, awesome 🥚🥚👏🏼 Will be be having some plants around the coop?
It blows my mind that you're planting in the ground in mid-November! I've just finished prepping my garden for next season, we won't see any garden products like seedlings or seed potatoes until at least April 2022. I would love to have bulk seed potatoes like that, we just get pre-bagged seed potatoes, and only a couple of varieties are available each year. So jealous :) For reference, I live in zone 3.
I too am looking for healthy meals. I was having my food delivered because I just dont seem to care about cooking. I'm going to try Epic Homesteading for inspiration. Thanks for the videos! Love your website.
I actually went to Walter Anderson (because of you!) when I visited last month. Made me wish I was a little farther along in my gardening habit when I lived in SD
You separating the leaks reminded me of my orange seed. I got a naval orange seed to pop. And when it did it put out 3 main shoots. Once it was a bit larger I was able to sperate all 3 from each other and now I have 3 trees from one seed. I let you know in a couple years if the fruit is good or not.
Nice episode. I saw you at Walter Andersons and said hi. I had to do a double take when I saw you guys. Great nursery. I like the black garden beds you got going.
Living vicarious seeing you both garden while dealing snow. Jealous you all can garden. There's a video for us northern people, items for inside gardening.
Our local garden center takes the plastic 6 cell or larger planting pots back to reuse them. You might see if your local nursery will let you return the empties.
Mizuna is a great salad green for us because it is super easy to grow with direct seed and transplant. We eat it mostly int he salad, but I will try to make Boreks with them. The Chard ; make dolmas with them, strongly suggest it.

“Sun’s getting low” it transported me to that Hulk scene lol. Can we see some onions? Or a video on just the chicken coup build please? Awesome video as usual!
Kevin, I also planted red mizuna this morning. It’s my first time growing it. I want to visit a nursery to buy onions as well. Thanks for the tips on how you cook it.
My man Kev getting on those savoy cabbage! 👍👌 If you want a beautiful flower try out "echium pininana" - aka Giant Viper's Bugloss, it can grow to 18ft and on the 2nd year it will shoot out a massive trunk covered in flowers. The bees will go mad for it.
I appreciate your work! You and Jacque are fun to watch! The bread making was motivational. More ideas for use of the harvest and storage (canning? 🤯). BTW have you grown luffa?
Can't wait to see the chicken shopping! I wish your climate was good for hoop houses. I just built one over one of my beds to grow some lettuce and onion, but would love more advice in using it.
I may have missed it in one of the past Epic Homesteading videos, but I would love to know how much land you're working with here. Ever since your old place you've been an inspiration for growing in any size space, but I can't help but finf myself comparing property I'm looking at to your own, and wondering what the comparison actually is
I like what you did with the leeks, I'm in zone 4 so I'm a little envious of how much gardening you get to do. I would also like to watch Jacques' channel...what's it called?
Which nursery did you go to? I've seen one like that in Poway but they didn't have seed potatoes like this one and not as many greens available. Thanks!!

The worst hit to the pocketbook is not only going to the nursery, but going with someone who is an enabler!! HAHAHAHA #Liveyourbestgardenlife

Cauliflower+leeks= Amazing soup when pureed.
Kevin and Jaques you guys have no idea how enjoyable this one was as a plant nerd

Still thinking about it!
Lol I can barely plant in November either
It’s nearly summer here, strawberries with half a day of sun need watering every two days
82 degrees...enjoy that warm weather.
For mizuna, I bought the seedlings once and let them go to seed, and now I have mizuna seeds for a lifetime! Also growing in different parts of the garden - voluntary plants.

With aged chicken poop mixed in, your going to get some seriously epic compost! Enjoy your SoCal winter, it's better than our summer 😆

Someone using healthfully and not healthy appropriately in a sentence 😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️
It was a gamble LOL
Would it be possible to do a video where you show us how to collect seeds from flowers and from plants like chives and other herbs
While he plants his starts while wearing flip flops, I'm pulling out my frost-killed snow peas while wearing gloves to dust off the dusting of snow we received last night. California dreamin for sure
Kevin, did you know you can grow peppercorn plants as vining house plants. AND they fruit year-round? I’d love to see a video on it. :)
Ah, so jealous! And I can't wait for the chickens!
Perhaps you could invite friends and cooks over to cook a potluck dinner using your veg. When others cook, you taste a diversity of new things.
“I am not going to crazy?” You went crazy before you said that. You two are “ my people.”
:)
Always enjoy a planting video, I also see you've got a lot of future projects coming. Great! Take your time, gonna love watching them!
Great video as always. You never fail to give 100% in your episodes and we appreciate that. I am going to give potatoes a try soon so will be watching your potato videos several times. Can't wait to see your feather babies!
Good luck on your taties!
I need a nursery like that in my life
Oh my. That nursery looks awesome. I wish there was one like that with all of those potato varieties around here. I’d be that kid in the candy shop.

Yup I'll create a little ecosystem next to the coop!
Since I live here in SD I like to see where you head to buy stuff. I go to that store (WA) all the time and always have my eyes peeled for you 😅.
I could watch videos of folks plant shopping all day long!
;)

Hey good to see you in the comments!!
I'd love to see simple mizuna or any harvest recipes. I like to garden but don't really know how to cook
Great shot of the moon above your head while planting the mizuna!😀👍 Happy planting🌻
Moon over mizuna!
@@claudiahansen4938 That would make a great song title!❤️
@@kathleenwhite9741 that is so true!

Because I was told carrots won't transplant I bought some in a 6 pack. I transplanted them and they did fine.
Excited for the scoop on the coop!
it's november here, and it's 32F. Consider yourself lucky!
Looking forward to the Epic Chicken journey! 🐣🐔

You need a dibble tool in your garden much easier for leaks.
Kevin, I also planted red mizuna this morning. It’s my first time growing it. I want to visit a nursery to buy onions as well. Thanks for the tips on how you cook it.
Walter Anderson’s is my favorite nursery!
And I want to hit up this nursery on the weekend.

When I was a kid $10 worth of pocket money meant comics!! Now that I'm an adult a spare $100 is straight to the garden shop!! LOL!!
I appreciate your work! You and Jacque are fun to watch! The bread making was motivational. More ideas for use of the harvest and storage (canning? 🤯). BTW have you grown luffa?

Planting fall beds. Meanwhile it's snowing for me
sweet video! Epic Homesteading and Jacque is great!
The lighting on your camera though 😎 … love the content.
I envy your energy! Way to garden!!!
It snowed yesterday....🇨🇦❄
Can't wait to see what chickens you get!
Growing veggies in November, jealous. No snow up here yet which is nice but weather has gotten cold.
Can't wait to see the chicken shopping! I wish your climate was good for hoop houses. I just built one over one of my beds to grow some lettuce and onion, but would love more advice in using it.
Honestly I might build some
I need to build some soon and would love to see a tutorial on it too.

About 1/3 acre
5:10 Jacques the Enabler! Not that you needed any enablement. 😅
Sooo jealous of your nursery! We have nothing like this near me in FL. I need to hunt one down! Wow!
Central FL resident here. Lukas Nursery and South Seminole Farms are both fantastic! Highly recommend.
I interrupted my lil debbie and Tay money videos for this? HAHAHA.. nice work dude.. keep killing it
When I go to the nursery their selection never looks this good. Lol.
Should have been “Huge Fall Nursery Haul” for full rhyme potential
You guys rock!
I like what you did with the leeks, I'm in zone 4 so I'm a little envious of how much gardening you get to do. I would also like to watch Jacques' channel...what's it called?

Hi Kevin! Follow Acre Homestead on UA-cam. She lives in southern Washington, grows, cooks and cans most of her food.
What amazing nursery did you go to??
12:20 Sun's getting real low, big guy! :D
Looking great!!
Omgosh..envious of the seedlings. Not really choices here...i would kill for one raised bed!!!
I love Jaques' choice of pansies. Esp the emo colored ones. 😂 love me some emo colored garden!
I'm part of a Facebook page called Goth Gardening. All the moody colors and decor are shared!
Chickens 🐓!!! Yay!!!
What nursery are you guys shopping at?
Have you grown tomatoes this time of year at all? I decided to try it and have a Cherokee Purple and Cherry Tomato. So far growing and even flowering.
You can push cherries, but the beefsteaks are tougher
That will be the Taj Mahal of chicken coops
Let's get some cooking videos!
Which nursery did you go to? I've seen one like that in Poway but they didn't have seed potatoes like this one and not as many greens available. Thanks!!
Now that you mentioned ear wigs, I don't remember having a single one this year.
Lucky
At 1:10 you mentioned that they sowed the carrot wrong, but you didn't say why -- what was wrong? Why wouldn't it grow? Would love to know why.
You are killing me. I miss California. It was 29 degrees this morning

Y'all always acting like you can't grow anything in November in Cali. Ummm here in Wisconsin there's snow on the ground but my germination test of snow peas still worked last week. It was like 22F overnight!
Nah, we can grow a bunch! Just less :)
on the chicken coop, be sure to see what laws are for distance to your neighbors homes.
