    Quick tip for next time you're planting carrots. Try mixing radish seeds with the carrot seeds when direct sowing. The radishes grow pretty quick, take up space instead of weeds, and ripen before the carrots. When you harvest the radish, you have pre-thinned the carrots.

      It also confuses carrot flys, a common pest for carrots

    • @connecticutwormsgardens
      @connecticutwormsgardens 2 роки тому +3

      @@ddubsr5886 radishes are ready to harvest 21 days from the day of planting. Carrots take on average 80 days. Some are longer a few are shorter. The carrot flies don't show up until the carrot tops are fairly sizable which is long after the radishes are harvested. So there are no radishes left when the carrot flies would begin to be problematic

    • @connecticutwormsgardens

      I love to interplant various things, including root vegetables. I have done beets in with carrot seeds and harvest the beets when they are tiny babies. I've used radishes as well. Both work great. Unfortunately it still doesn't remove the need for thinning out carrots. Even if you plant other crops, you're still going to end up with too many carrot seeds. It just seems to be the law in the garden lmao.
      The one thing that has made carrot planting more or less flawless is sowing the seeds in boiled and cooled cornstarch gel. It completely eliminates scattering too many carrot seeds and ensures that they are evenly distributed in rows at the volume desired and properly spaced. When I learned of the method, I was kicking myself for all the years I didn't know about it.

      @twobluestripes 2 роки тому

      That’s a great idea. I expect you could cut it larger than the bottom of the bed and then insert it so that the hardware cloth folds up the sides several inches in the inside? Once the bottom layer of soil is packed full to the edge and has the weight of all the other soil on top, i bet a critter wouldn’t wedge their way between the hardware cloth and the bed wall.
